When someone sends you something, it contains the senders name. As far as I know I cannot get the name off, lol. My anniversary bags now have sender's name, uggh. Wish I had known, but it's a cool idea. It will be nice to know who it is from. Just that I handed that item to see if it would work.

Correct. Whenever someone drops something in your box, the item will track who the sender is. It will continue to do so for a short while after the item has been removed from your box, after which the sender's info will be removed.

It not only allows you to know who gave what but also to deal with people who would abuse this system. So if you are receiving inappropriate items, leave the mail in your box and page a GM. There will be no ifs or buts about who put that there. :)

For all the folks criticizing the new items just think about the thought and work that went into making something as simple as a mailbox. Kudos to the design team for coming up with an alternative to the bulletin board that allows anyone to drop items at a house. Thanks.

Does it track the account then and not just the name? I ask as if it's just the name then it could be abused with making a char with someone elses name to get that char in trouble.

I'm very impressed with this item ... it has so much potential for building community.

    Inappropriate items?

All I can think of is a book with writing in it. Which could be changed by the reciever to implicate someone... Writing something with a deco tool?

Other than writing, what would be inapropriate? If I put two apples and a banana in someones mailbox, will I get in trouble??

I would think that inappropriate would be someone who constantly drops trash in your mailbox as a harassment technique... this will keep people from filling up your lockdowns on a regular basis or harass you with rude books, or whatever else.

Would it be just as simple (and less demanding on the GM's) to be able to add that person to a ban list on your mailbox?

Rather depends what they are doing...

We've had a case on Europa of someone leaving racist, sexually explicit and other offensive material on bulletin boards, books left on the ground... pretty much anywhere it could be written. They repeatedly defaced certain people's boards, and certain guild's books, as well as leaving their mark on a range of other boards as well. They would certainly have carried that nasty little campaign on through mailboxes too, and there really are some instances where people deserve a lot more than 'ignoring' by their victims, and anyone else who runs across their vile little 'messages'. Plus, of course, there's an interesting argument to be had where EA responsibility for allowing 'distribution' of such stuff ends... so tracking these types thoroughly is warranted at times.

Well yes definitely page in situations like that..and ban them! You do have the option to ban players like that on bulletin boards. But that would be true in any scenario racial slurs and sexual comments.

I'm talking about more common issues like a disgruntled player who decided to quit and spend his last evening filling up as many boxes as he could. Not much a GM can do about that. If paging were the only option then that would just be that much more anti-GM sentiment on the boards when they didn't respond quickly enough to the 200 "so and so filled my mailbox w/junk" pages. Or a noob who didnt understand what they were and just droped stuff in them. 1st day in the game getting a possible 3 day ban... or a mark on their account and not knowing why.

It just doesn't seem like a GM worthy event for the most part. I don't mean to pitch the idea as the only option. But it is all that would be required in most scenarios.

so it seems to be in the same row as bulletin boards on private houses outer walls set with access to anyone or secured chests with set access to anyone.

As soon as the house is private, they cannot be touched by non friended chars, which contradicts that security setting and is not good imho.

Maybe this flaw can be fixed in the future?

Besides that - a very cool item (I think I proposed such stuff also long ago, and this came in now with another proposal, the teleporters)! Makes me very happy!

Just wondering if we can engrave these mailboxes? Coz I used to have a keg recycling secure which was engraved to let everyone know what to dump in there in my shop and these mailboxes do sound perfect for the job, if we could engrave it or dye it would be sweet :D

Great, now that the mailboxes are working and secure to use for players:
How about making workers able to craft different mailbox styles like stone, wood, metal, etc mailboxes... ?

That would be handy. Being able to secure your own stuff (a la bulletin board) would take some burden off the GMs.

    Yay a mailbox thread!

I do not understand how one set to friends let's anyone place in it.

On LS it is that way. I do not think player's realize the name is there temporarily. Female character gave me some delicate scales. I think, what to give her, aha, twilight lantern! Yea! Go to place in her mailbox, locked! So I am writing message on the boards and she bans me. ok... lol

Guess the scales were an insult? I do not get it.

So is this intended? Friend's and anyone setting are the same?

Good news is Lord Pawain gave me neat stuff and no banning! woot!

As far as I know anyone can drop items into any mailbox as long as the house is public and the person isn't banned from the house. The security settings on the mailbox are for who can open it up like a normal container to add/remove items.

If someone leaves offensive material in your mailbox, the person CAN be tracked...the questions is WILL they be tracked? We all know how scarce GM's are of late. But if someone just fills mine up with trash, well sometimes I actually like other folks' trash :)

To limit your mailbox capacity to 25 guest items, store 100 of your own items in it.

Trivia on stackables: I had a visiting lumberjack leave me some bundles of boards ... although they wouldn't stack at first when I first claimed them, after the delivery tag timed out, they stacked normally with each other and other boards.

If they are on the stairs of a private house the should still work as intended IMO. If someone has a house in fel. I wouldn't think that it would be set to public, but they would probably like to have people drop stuff off to them. My house is private and I clear my access list every day because I don't want people in there unless I'm there and the mailbox would be a good option for fel houses. (I don't have doors, I have stairs that lead up to the next floor so I can't secure the doors and make the house public FYI).

What's really nice is chars on your other accounts can leave items if you
have not had time to friend them yet. I have this problem as I am transferring houses
around a bit whenever I find a more awesome plot or larger one.

I might be wrong, but I believe it doesn't include a name if the person already has sufficient rights to open the container.

This seems to be the confusion. I think people are setting the mailboxes to "anyone" or "friends" because they think the setting determines who can place items in the mailbox.

From reading your helpful posts the mailboxes work like this:

    1. Anyone can place an item in the mailbox if they can access the box location.

    2. The setting determines who can remove items from the mailbox.

If you want a friend only mailbox, put it in an area that only friends can access.

    Response to Cyrah:

The person gave to scales because your hands are so dry! It was a hint for you to use lotion.

I am glad you thought the rotworm stew I gave you was neat. :)

I secured mine, I believe. I imagine you can lock it down as well, but then I figure you'd have to unlock to remove items from it.

You have to secure it, not lock it down, and set access permissions to "Owner Only". If you lock it down, you would have to unlock the whole mailbox in order to take out items.

Unfotunately, a patch early this year brought an unpleasant change: You cannot unlock items in a locked down container anymore. Instead, you have to unlock the whole container.

Maybe I am dense (no maybe about it). I read through this thread. is it impossible to place items in a mailbox on a private house if you are not accessed?

*edit* This particular box is locked down rather than secured.

QUESTION: A friend wrote the following icq this morning to me. I don't have a mailbox so am posting this in hopes someone can shed light on what may have happened to cause the disappearance of all the anniversary gifts in her mailbox.

She was redeeming the tickets and using her new mail box to temporarily store the items - and wrote the following:
