Basically im all a bit new to this UO stuff and need some help with my character, im trying to play a pure mage and was basically wondering where to go from where im at,

at the mo i have the following stats:

    95str
    10dex
120int (plus some more from items)

and the following skills (or will have after just a little more training :D)

    100 magery
    110 eval int
    110 wrestling
    100 inscription
    100 resist
    100 meditation
    80 focus

my equipment all sucks its just a cheap LRC suit, but i have no money for arties and just get owned in doom :fight:>>>>>:stretcher: any advice on decent ways to make a little cash would be nice!!!

also does anybody use the spell protection i realise that it lowers the resist that i spent so long trying to gain but i always seem to get interrupted when fighting spell casters exactly when the resist would come in handy!!!!

so just wondering if anybody had any advice i have read alot of stuff on here but im still not really sure of what direction to go in, any help would be most apreciated!!!

first off, are you going to be mostly pvming or pvping? reason I ask is because of wrestling. if you want wrestling for purely defensive reasons, you may want to consider substituting anatomy for it:
    (Anatomy + Evaluate Intelligence + 20) / 2 = defensive wrestling
(100 + 110 + 20)/2 = 115 defensive wrestling. that would free up 5 skill points, and give you higher defensive wrestling. you'll not have any offensive wrestling though. [EDIT] 5 points isn't much now, but if you reach legendary eval (which you want), that's (100+120+20)/2=120 defensive wrestling w/o increasing anatomy. so that's like a savings of 20 points, since you won't need 120 wresting to get it.

As for protection, I always have it on pvming. spellcasting is a pure mage's only weapon, and if you're fighting something that can spam-spell (dragons, changelings, etc.) then you're going to want it! a ring/bracelet with +Magic resist can help offset the resist hit you get from casting this.

if you're going to be gming inscription, I suggest creating a slayer library. I eventually ended up with all super-slayers, and carry these books with me. prior to that, i had a library of regular slayers at the bank and swapped out my books depending on what I was fighting. boring to make that many books, but double damage=less mana used/kill, gives the monster a smaller timeframe to damage you before it dies, plus overwhelms healing for things that can heal themselves.

w/o slayers and with low resists, i'd tackle the earth eles in shame. a low ~200gp, but they're slow and can't cast spells. despise is also good since everything there is slow and can't cast (stay away from the poison ele and titans). everytime you go to the bank to drop off gold/loot, do an escort quest. you've got gate and that's an easy 500gp. mummies in lev1 deceit drop ~300 gold, but spawn really slowly. which might be good if you don't regen mana fast yet or if you fail a lot with spells right now.

later, a repond or ogre slayer will allow you to fight the arctic ogre lord with relative ease (~800gp) as well as the cyclopian warriors in despise. a reptile or dragon slayer will allow you to kill a white wyrm with some work (~1200gp). only take a ww on if you have high resists. destard used to be a mage's playground, but along came greater dragons, and that nerfed that. ele slayer will let you tear up almost any ele

    My good friend always plays a mage template and the one he came up with, what he calls the ultimate mage, is as follows;

    Magery 120
    Meditation 120
    Evaluate Intelligence 120
    Resist spells 120
    Wrestling 120
    Inscription 100
Extra 20 points for... (I can't remember but focus would give you a bit more mana regen)

Your well on your way to this template, What you need to concentrate on IMHO is a way to make some gold. With just this template you can make spell books. You can turn in the ones that are junk for Library reward points to get some ice items to sell or keep. If you get slayer books you can keep the best ones and sell the rest.

If you don't have a tailor you can then buy better armor with the gold you've made selling spell books.

If you have protection on, don't be embarrassed I use it too, cast reactive armor. RA will take 5 points from your elemental resists and put it back on your physical. It makes keeping all your resists high easier.

If you want to start making gold adventuring beg borrow or buy a demon slayer spell book. You can kill Ice Fiends in the Ice dungeon with 1 explosion flame strike combo. They drop about 600 gp.

Doom is not a friendly place for mages. A better template here would be a Spellweaver. You can soul stone Inscription and add 120 Spellweaving for Doom. The extra spells are very effective in doom and should help keep you alive to collect some rewards!

I have a quite a bit of experience playing a mage PVM so feel free to drop me a PM.

to those more eduacted above :scholar: thanks for the advice,

i play pvm really haven't ventured into pvp just yet (i dont wanna die!),

i did try to do the quest to allow me to donate spell books to the library but the desert i had to search for some poison sacs in (on speckled scorpions) was a but too difficult for me, might have to go back with some buddies, are the library rewards actually worth the effort? ive found myself in despise the ettins die quick and i can take down orgre lords it just takes a while, energy vortex, invis and repeat :D

defo think that i will go for the anatomy over wrestling, i have got to around 80 wrestling and gains are getting slow... am i right in thinking that training anatomy would be quicker?

is it worth keeping the resist if i am going to use protection or is it better to just dump it in favour of spellweaving? is it possible to train resist to its cap cast protection then re-train back to its cap? would protection stay on if i died?

i dont actually have mondains legacy as yet is it worth updating to it? obviously i will need to in order to use spellweaving, but other than that are there any other good points to it?

it just like to say thanks again to those that answered and anyone else that answers, i really appreciate it

oh one last question, what the hell is this? lol

Stick with Wrestling. You'll be glad you did in the end.
That 20 points you'll save won't let you have special moves, and you don't need 120 eval to benefit from it. 120 Wrestle scrolls also come fairly cheap when you decide you need one.

What kind of jewlery do you use? I suggest trying to reach 2/6 casting WITHOUT protection.
    Why?
Once you have lived as a mage with 2/6 casting, you'll wonder why you ever used protection in the first place. Fast heals, cures, invis's on allies....there's nothing like a fast invis/heal on a warrior friend to save the day. =D

If spellcasting monsters are giving you trouble, try some different tactics.
Never stand in plain view of a caster. Get a summon on him, invis, and work with it from there.

Give 2/6 a try, even with abyssmal resists. Then build your suit with resists and mods when the money comes in. Along with a set of Super slayer books. You'll fall in love with them. =D

Being an inscribe mage IMHO makes the library quest one of your best bets to get a few turn ins cheaply, after you make spell books anyway!

I have wrestling on all my mages if at all possible. If you want to try something else, you can drop wrestling and use a mage weapon -0 (Staff of the Magi is one). This will use your magery as your defensive skill and leave you 120 points to use else where.

Keep resist if you want to fight anything that casts spells against you. You can't retrain it with protection on. Protection does stay on after you die.

I would try Mondains Legacy before I'd try Kingdom Reborn. It's got some nice stuff.

To play as a mage u don't need protection most time. As said above get 2/6 casting set. If u get yourself in a middle of casting spawn, then Protection will help you, it is casted very quickly anyway.
