Any Plans on bringing in some incentives to keep pirating ¨afloat¨ ?

Im on Atl and i rarely see other ships hunting for pirates or merchants. And Im getting bored myself , charges are still expensive / tedious to craft , and the rewards for the time spent arent really worth it... The only decent loot are the white tubs and 3 stuck bottles . Orc ships are worthless , too fragile for intensive combat. So what else is there to shoot for? Merchants? i actually like those for the ressources but they're as rare as pope sh** .

I thought Pirates went with treasure? So where are the treasures? Where are the gems? the gold? the jeweld crowns? The rare deco items? the fabled ¨large cannon¨?

It shouldnt be cheap to be a pirate , i can understand that. But the time and money spent should be rewarding. And right now its not.

Please add some more rare loot, update or add quests, have the pirates sometimes drop some arties/replicas when we kill them. Right now im at the point i just check the crates and just leave the pirate on his scuttled ship.

High seas is my favorite expansion by far ( been playing uo for 8 years ) But i feel like i bought an unfinished product.

And here's a couple other ideas that would make Pirating more interesting :

Barding deeds for ships : 20000 colored ingots to add hp

colored cannon balls : for added firepower

Different sails : By tailors or as rewards , id even be happy with white ones, im sorry but the current ones are fugly.

ability to link cannons to hired sailors : fire and reload commands on a gump

Pirates / corsairs used to resell captured ships

couple ideas for rarer pirate loot : Tricorne with eye patch , wooden leg , blunderbuss , Pirate related Reward titles!

So Devs, I really want to keep pirating and i know a bunch of other folks do too. Dont let this fun booster die due to a lack of depth.

Hadn't given it much thought, but i guess i agree here.

Once i worked my way through the Saltpeter i had saved up, i never bothered to try to get more. As you said, it is just too expensive/time consuming to be fun/worth it to craft all of that and/or buy the Saltpeter.

I'd be happy if they just reduced the costs a bit, since i dont see them adding more content to an "old" expansion. I'm sure the pressure on them is to move on to the next revenue generating project ... not fix bugs and polish the previous ones.

If they made blackpowder crafted 2 at a time (or more) for the same amount of resources it would be a lot better for me... would mean less time crafting and less resources used (so that if you scuttle a crappy-loot ship you aren't boned) and more time actually participating.

I appreciate the devs are going to be busy with the next publish and the rebuilding. But I agree this is something which needs to be looked at.

But I hope this is something they will look into. As of right now, it seems like you have to have put in a lot of time crafting and gathering resources, if you even have the multiple crafter characters needed in the first place which some people don't.

Maybe there could be a npc who sells the stuff like ammunition and powder charges, but buying player crafter ones provide a damage and quality boost, like gm made armour. This would open up the content to players who don't have established crafter's or a guild to help them out.

If it's going to be kept as it is, then imo the rewards should reflect the time and effort the player has had to put in.

I'd like to see cannon/ammo made by Legendary Blacksmiths have some kind of damage boost.

I'd like to actually get quest reward ammo I can use in the size cannon my ship is equipped with. I have HEAVY cannon!

Maps don't seem to work in the Enhanced Client, I would like to be able to just drop a map on the tillerman and go to the hunting ground and allow the ship to auto-navigate around other ships.

I'd like a better method for loading cannon... also if two people work at loading, the boxes end up overlapping and covering each other up. That needs to be addressed.

And finally... saltpeter really needs to be cheaper. Even if I buy it in Felucca it's still eats up a major porton of my profits.

I think the main reason for it being deserted is the resource issue - it takes too many saltpeter just to produce 1 shot. No one wants to waste almost 2k in just firing a cannon. If they lowered it down to 2 to 3 or gave us the old alchemist vendors on the docks, I'm pretty sure more people would be going out and doing pirate quests more often. Mining saltpeter isn't a solution to the demands in producing the supplies. The niter deposits aren't as frequent as many would like. You would probably dig up at least 5 blackrocks before finding a niter deposit. They should just switch the spawn rate, i.e. 5 niter deposits to 1 blackrock. Or they can make 1 blackrock covert into 3 to 5 black powder. Either one would be a viable solution.

After i spent days making grapeshot 1000s of them and getting my orc ship only to log in after holiday vacation with the kids all my boats including my fishing boat full of fish was gone. For some reason I didn't thing they would decay I lost 1000s of supply's 60k wood 60k cloth 60k ingots and over a 1000s loads on pac

any clue how long it and cost to make and get the ocr ship let alone the fish and traps. I have not played that expansion since and really dont care to any time soon WAY to expensive and the thought of all that back and fourth sail to the ocean dock is dreadful.

I my fault but I cant help but say to myself WTF why is there a decay rate on these ships especially the reward orc one at least make it like a 6 weer timer WTF what ever uo in its madness "WINS" HaHa

  7. All the stuff you could get saturated the market. I has no gold value.

The systems are poorly thought out and therefore anything the create as rewards become worthless.

Let me define worthless. Why would I buy a ship, spend gold on cannons, spend time hunting, to get what now costs nothing.

The bottles of liquor and steaks. Practically free.
The white cloth dyetub. Who cares the are locked down with free use all over the place.

The pirates are sort of static. Go to a place kill them.

Create ocean encounters that are random. Create rewards that are tied to the player... Some point system they can use to modifiy their. I dont know. But the current way UO does business with fighting and rewards is boring.

I dont know what shard you play on but 2k for a shot is super cheap. Last time i checked, saltpeter at docks on atl went for over 600 gold a piece . times 6 to make 1 black powder , times 4 to craft a heavy charge. So thats 24 saltpeter to craft a single heavy shot, not counting the % of loss when crafting black powder, and not considering the time spent to sail to the market to buy saltpeter and the time spent to craft. oh and add another black powder to craft a fuse cord.

So thats 30 saltpeter x 15% loss = 34 x 600 gold = 20400 gold only in saltpeter every time i fire a shot , times 16 shots on average to scuttle a merchant or pirate ship = 326400 gold to sink a ship. And remember thats the cost in saltpeter only. Not counting time spent and other materials.

I havent seen heavy charges sold on atl for less than 10k a piece, and at that price, you are selling half of your cost in saltpeter only.

As i said in the original post, i wouldnt mind the cost that much if they're was some decent possibilitys of valuable loot.

I know what u mean, waisted time and money on 2 bugged orc ships that i couldnt repair, sold a 3rd one after 2 sorties when i realised how weak they were compared to Gargs.

Posted and paged many times concerning the bugged ships and never got an answer either.

thats a good idea, and the higher you go with the colors, the less your max capacity is reduced and the higher your hp is.

I think the pirate ships need to have alot more saltpeter, potash and black powder as loot. This would be the incentive to hunt them.

I would also put a turnin for the stuff at the various Custom's Houses. There is one in Vesper, Britain and Jhelom, maybe Trinsic, too? Another empty building with no functionality.

You could turn in all/some of the MiB loot as well. All the globes and pillows, etc.

Get enough points for a net that brings up something to shoot your cannons at.
Ghost ships, sea monsters and things like that.

Also, Tokuno has alot of ocean. Didn't the treasure fleet full of Tokuno Arti's sink there? There should be some net you can get to summon a baddee that will drop tokuno arti's.

Create an elemental that drops Saltpeter, like Copper Ele's.

That way those with out miners could farm Saltpeter.

I thought that the commodity system for pricing was going to reset to a base value each server up. I had no idea that it was a permanent one way index.

The enjoyment of the highseas was taken away when the vendors selling it on the mainland docks were taken away. I do not wish to spend a week mining for dismal amounts of saltpeter only to use it all on one pirate boat. It was enough work to sail from the Emporium, find a pirate ship, kill the pirate, skuttle the ship, repair my ship, sail back to the Emporium, just to get a measly light cannonball. I play to have fun, not work at a game as if it is another job. I would like to either see *good* amounts of saltpeter on merchant ships as a reward, or more than 3 or 4 heavy powder charges in the holds, or bring back the vendors that sold it and lower the prices.

Would love a system where I could go to a regent vendor, saltpeter vendor, or any other commodity vendor and type in an amount that I would like to purchase instead of grinding the amounts up all day 20, wait 30 mins, 40, wait another 30 mins. I would rather type in vendor buy, chose the item, type in the amount and sign my name, then the resource is dropped into my bank account.

I read alot of good ideas , keep em coming!

Another usefull item would be carpenter made repair deeds crafted by combining 2000 boards and 2000 pieces of cloth.
Its a pain in the ass the way repairs work, having to unload some stones to be able to hold a decent amount of boards and cloth...

Take friends, each of you will get a chance at Orc Ship parts or items if that's what you are after, as long as you are in party. Make a co-opted effort to get the items you want. Went out with a friend last night doing this on the first Pirate we received 5 different ship parts out of 7 people in the party.

Personally I find the resources on the ships almost reason enough to go... more fun than mining, more fun than chopping trees, more fun than hunting down dozens of critters for hides.

Yes..that added a lot to the discussion. So once someone pays for something...you think they should just shut up and not give any feedback?

Most of the good game developers listen to their customer base on what people did and didn't like, true you can't please everyone but if you upset enough people it will harm your future sales. Who wants to buy new content when old content has not even been fixed.

The recent dev video talked about all this new stuff for attracting new players, but how are players going to feel when they find out content like this is buggy (ships not taking damage) or out of reach because 1) On populated servers it requires a lot of gold, on low servers you wont find vendors selling the supplies. So unless you happen to have established crafter's it's hard to get into.

More power to people like Nexus who enjoy it! That's great, but I think the point's in this thread are valid, and I don't think it would be hard to band aid this until they have time to look at it properly in more depth, just add npc's at the mainland again or add npc's who sell all the stuff you need but it's not as effective.

This post is the reason i didnt buy high seas. I only heard bad things about it. If the additions suggested were added, i probably would finally get it. The idea sounded very fun to me, but just heard sooo many bad reviews of it that it seemed like a waste of time. The only reason I have even considered buying it is so i could use Corguls Sash, but im not paying 15 bucks for one sash...

It really is fun for about 2-3 months but like i said, it lacks in depth. Imo it has a huge undevelloped potential that is just sitting there.

Instead , they spend time making a video that 90% of the player base dont know/care about, when they could be polishing there product. For example.

Yup, that's actually the reason why I go out pirate and merchant hunting. But the resources used to scuttle a ship outweigh the value of the loot. Doesn't really give an incentive to go hunt. Adding the white dye cloth dye tub was a start, but more unique rewards and access to resources is much needed to keep players interested.

How can I put this best....

I think that the team knew hunting pirates and being a pirate would always be a niche thing.

I would have expected, however, that it be a little less niche than it is. I would have expected it to be on a par with treasure hunting. Most people don't want to do it, but those that do can get really good at it and a character can make a respectable living off of it.

I think with some tweaking, both pirating and pirate hunting could be that way.

Comparatively simple things could help....Like introducing artifacts on par with what you get from t-hunting....Like gold being on par with it...Hell, by having moonstone jewelry spawn on pirate ships and merchant ships (though some of us take advantage of the lack of Karma loss by RPing it them as "smugglers," not merchants) at about the same rate they spawn on gypsies!

And then of course there's less simple things like making ammunition cheaper and easier to come by and if possible changing the mechanics.

But honestly? If they upped the rewards somewhat, if they consciously tried to make the rewards on par with treasure hunting and kept current rewards in as well? It would, I should think, be a great improvement.

    -Galen's player

  29. Well that was only a booster pack. Since booster packs are just a bonus I m not sure they should prioritize to fix it. There are many things to fix into the game that everybody can access.

The reason most of you feel it's a waste is simply because the rewards are worthless. There too many in the market. Who here wouldn't spend 10 mil on a very useful reward that is difficult to get or a reward you can sell or aquire from another player foor 30-40mil? As it stands now you spend more than you can aquire so it becomes boring and a waste of time. Just simple as that.
They can make saltpeter free and still tou be bored unless you get something worth the time. Thats how it is has being and will always be. Stray from that proven method and you get old trammel dungeons, monsters, evets, places, practicaly everything thats goes unused and practicaly abandon in Ultima now.

Well the least they could do for now is add some loot/deco items on pirates or in crates. That cant be that hard to implement. And it would give us Pirate enthusiasts someting to shoot for.

To add to the wish list,

Itd be nice to be able to board the ship before its scuttled. After the 1st damage state maybe? This would help save some charges and time. In the same line of though , we should be able to destroy or remove the fuse once on board. Or at least have the enemy ship stop firing once they're all dead.

  33. I agree completely with you that community is what keeps people online. And to that matter, I am afraid that the booster was counter expensive: many people went fishing and the ones who didn t have the booster had no more community to interact with. This booster maybe didnt add land but since seas were not used and are about 50% of the landscape that booster was like adding 50% of the landscape at once...

I agree that there is too much land mass and adding high seas was a brilliant way to optimise already existing land. I dont agree with the statement that high seas diluted the community though. As the title of the thread says, High seas are deserted...

Lil off topic but I am one of those who would be in favor of closing some facets and shards. This would PO a bunch of peeps obviously but i think it would be a good thing to funnel players in a tighter spot.

That being said, i want my blunderbuss !

I know you may think that would bring players together, but all it would do is drive a wedge between those forced to move and those whose shards/facets stayed open. Pissing them off is an understatement, and players would leave. If you want to play with more players, you should move to Atlantic.

What I'd like to see added is houseboat of some sort in the guise of a galleon. Doesn't have to be too complex, can be the equivalent of a small house space-wise and just have one floor, and with similar lockdowns.

Coding wise it would be hell, since you are talking about moving literally hundreds of items around at once. I can't imagine the kind of lag that would be caused if you had a half a dozen house boats lined up and racing each other around the seas. It would still be cool if you could completely live on a boat and have an actual cabin with some chests and furniture in. A long time ago, before Tram, there were a group of people that were pushing this as a solution to the housing problem. One of the devs basically said they had enough problems and strain on the servers as it was and there was no chance in hell they would even consider it.

The boat house idea sounds cool indeed but like you said, coding would most likely be hell. Id be happy with just a few lock downs on my garg ship .

    Err...

No offense, but "only a booster pack" hardly does justice to the equation. It was a "mini expansion" that cost $14.99 in order to access.

I'm sorry, but "Since booster packs are just a bonus" doesn't even stand on its own land-lubbin' legs.

But, again, we return to one of Mythic's key issues with UO at present. Releasing an expansion, a booster, or a (good god, did they really say it?) "mini-booster" in a condition that leaves most purchasers wanting for some level of overhaul and many wanting for major overhaul is not exactly among the best ways to go about encouraging people to want to pay for future endeavors.

Sure, there are a TON of things they need to fix in the game. They really should prioritize getting the stuff they're about to release done right so they don't have to fix so much on the backside.

Then again, I'm fairly certain the treasure chest spawn system hasn't been fixed yet...

Good being the operative word, EA doesn't care about you if you play this game, they care about their current in production cash cow SWTOR. If you pay for crap you get crap in return, don't buy a crap sandwich and complain about the taste of it after.

And if you lack the foresight to see that this game is a lost cause at this point, you will be wasting even more of your money, which if that's your thing more power to you.

I, for one, never bought the expansion, glad I didn't. Think, maybe, cannons were a bad idea?? Face it, we have characters running around in time eras melded into one mess of a world.

Perhaps, it would be more adventurous to fight, hand to hand?? The way I see it, a select few wanted a pirate world, and EA went with it. You want pirates, you won't get what you seek, not here, not in UO.

unless UO creates time portals, and sends you to like the late 1600's, then , maybe, i say maybe, EA can create a mega expansion, with islands, and what we westerners envision, pirating to be all about. Not that lame skinny action off somalia.

Unlike you I'm trying to offer constructive feedback, not just complaining and making personal insults. I still have fun so your point is kinda not even valid, I will go down with the ship so to say, or simply jump ship if something ever gets released which I find has better game play. I wont be paying for any more boosters until I hear feedback from people I trust.

If you feel so bitter and cynical about this game, yet you are here replying about it, doesn't that make you the one taking the sandwich and liking it?

¨The earliest documented instances of piracy are the exploits of the Sea Peoples who threatened the Aegean and Mediterranean in the 13th century BC. ¨

Piracy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

¨The oldest surviving gun, dated to 1288, has a muzzle bore diameter of 2.5 cm (1 in); the second oldest, dated to 1332, has a muzzle bore diameter of 10.5 cm (4 in).¨

And FYI, UO is a fantasy world , not a middle age sim. If it was, we wouldnt have gargs, elfs, spells or soul forges...

To add to this, though I don't know if Ultima lore holds any personal significance for you The 4th man. But Ultima 7 had cannons and If I remember correctly, there was a musket on one of the storage rooms at brit castle.

But yeah I think why certain fantasy games are so fun to play is because you can have the best bits from different cultures and periods all thrown into one. Obviously if it's not well thought out or not balanced and implemented well it can be a distaster.

A bit off topic but a reason I loved the Warhammer Universe (tabletop not the mmo) as a kid was mainly because it had all the cool themes of every era and culture.

I remember that musket. I think it was in a room on the roof, in the Southwest corner (assuming up is north in the game).
Although isn't Ultima 7 technically set a lot later on in the timeline?
I think I remember the game starting with dialogue to the effect that 70 years had passed since the Avatar had last been in Britannia

Iirc the room is at the upper right corner so if that was south west then yes? It was in the other corner from the other storeroom which required the key from the study, where the musket room required a switch I think =]

And yes I think when you first come through the moongate, a significant time has past, 70-100 years sounds about right.

I think I remember someone saying cannons have been in the series since Ultima 4. Or that's where they first appeared.

Ultima VII and Underworld 2 were my first Ultimas, but I loved them to bits (even if I was embarassingly bad at Underworld 2), so I can't say whether there were cannons before then.

I also think you might be right about where the room was, it's been many many years since I last played it, so remembered a room to the lower left, and that the musket was in a room.

I envy you! I discovered U7 quite late on when I was 15, and by then it was a game showing it's age graphics wise. I tried to play some of the older/other ones but I could just not get into them.

I wish someone would remake them using a newer engine. Kind off off topic but I saw on Richard Garriot's facebook page that so many people were asking him to return to the Ultima series. He replied that he will be working on a new mmo game, and while it wont be Ultima, he hopes to capture the feel of Britannia again!

I don't know if this will ever happen, but I can dream!

you guys are hijacking my thread!! lol

Tis ok though im not one of those forum nazis...
I discovered Ultima in 1998. Online that is. I had never heard of the ultima series before. I started playing UO because my lil brother told me it was kind of like a dugeons and dragons video game with thousands of people.

And im not asking for a musket just a good ol pirate blunderbuss! Could use the ore found in crates as ammo ! :gun:
