I see people talk about how good hit lightning is on a weapon, what does it actually do? Damage? If so how much, and are hit harm and hit fireball etc just as good?

lightning does the most. so its prefered.

I'm guessing lightning does 10 to 18 damage.

fireball is ok, i dont see many use harm. i dont have a pvp dexer yet so, try posting in a dex forum too

Any hit spell effect on a weapon will fire its spell at the current target as if casted by a mage with 80 evaluating intelligence (ignoring the EI skill level of the wielder).

You can boost it a bit by wearing SDI items, but the boost is minimal since 80 eval doesn't offer a spectacular boost to the base damage of the spell.

Lightning does the most damage, while fireball is also sought after because the delay gives another chance to interupt the target's casting.

Harm is also a solid choice on a melee weapon, but not a bow (harm damage is distance based).

Harm, lightning, fireball and magic arrow are all good.

MA and Fireball delays the damage which is nice for disrupts, lightning and harm hits at the exact same time as the weaponhit.
  5. For what it's worth, in testing hitspell bows, I found that velocity at the farthest reach of a bow's range was doing more damage than lightning. A velocity composite with the right mods should make for a great chase-down bow.

On test shard, the damage amounts from fireball hitspell on a bow seemed to match that of a mage with gm eval casting fireball. I could have missed something, though this is what I thought I saw.
