HORROR STORY!!

Well being out of the game for about a month my brother decided to come back into the game in anticipation of SA.

However he suffered a terrible loss which shouldn't have happened when he came back.

Here's the story and we leave it up to you guys out there to judge who went wrong here.

He got a transfer token to start anew on a different shard. He got all his things together and packed even before he went on vacation.

It is common knowledge that we cannot effect a recall whenever we are overloaded right, what more for a transfer to another shard huh? Now this is his case.

Upon using the token he was prompted that he was overloaded and thus couldn't effect the transfer.

So what he did was cast a bless skill on himself in order to accomodate the weight problem.

However to his surprise someone from no where suddenly without justification effected the transfer and the word we read was "SQUELCHED!"

Well he made it across to the other shard but unfortunately as if by sheer purpose his most valuable collection of mini-houses (complete set and more) was gone all that was left were the empty bag.

How can this be randomly done we ask? There were other heavier less expensive items to remove from the lot granting there was a foulup why the most treasured ones were picked.

It was a long hard collection on those houses and now it was all gone like the wind. If anyone did benefit from this loss he sure made a killing today. God bless you!

But it goes beyond this for now we see that crooks in UO are everywhere for these kinds of things should not happen. Who's in charge of the traffic? Don't tell us that a machine is behind all this hehe, because we find that hard to believe.

We rest our case and hope the management of this game would find it in their hearts to compensate us for this tragic uncalled for loss. Let this be a lesson for all. We wonder who's going to be :next:?

Indeed a sad day for us in UO.

Firstly, very sorry for your loss, and good luck with compensation :(

what on earth do you mean here? how can "someone" effect the transfer?

Well we were looking forward to go through the drill when doing the transfer after he casted Bless on himself since the initial try was denied.

We were just taken a backed when the transfer was suddenly done with the prompt
"SQUELCHED!" We feel that if casting the spell was in anyway a discrepancy then the transfer shouldn't have been initiated like the first time around, if it pushed through then there shouldn't have been a problem of losing any goods at all because the transfer was done and any other reason fails logic.

i've gotten the SQUELCHED system message before regarding transfers. nothing was ever missing though. sucks for his loss, but casting a spell on yourself to up your weight before a transfer is not using the best logic. did you know you can bring with you up to 5 pack horses full of items? 125 in your backpack, 150 in your bank box, 125 in each pack horse = 900 items you can xfer. put the heaviest/most valuable items in your bank, and the rest in your pack and in your packies. sorry this happened, but it sounds to me like a system issue regarding his bless spell and not the tampering of another player.

"squelched" just means the game has silenced the character from saying anything (it is used in some events to silence the crowd). I don't know how it interacts with transfers, but I strongly doubt it's something someone else did to him.

  8. Such injustice! I too am taken a backed! Where is the logic?? There is none, that is where! Crooks and liars everywhere!

Exactly as you said nothing should have happened more so if the transfer was initiated anyways. Even with the SQUELCHED prompt thing is if it was sent to the other shard it passed through Immigration and custom check on the origin shard otherwise something really is fishy.

Well getting a packie for a mere 5 stones difference wasn't considered, besides casting the spell meant compliance to the weight requirements the character could carry.

The big if's here are the other questions like why the treasure items were lost huh? They were all in lightweight in scroll forms in one particular bag. They certainly were not the heaviest on his back pack for sure another bag had about 280 stones on him.

I don't suppose the GM's could have been of any help at the destination shard as the problem occurred from the point of exit.

Where do these items go anyways come to think of it? A UO recycle bin of sorts? This transaction can be traced for the token was bought from UO Gold the most reliable source and not from any dupe vendor for sure.

Things like these cannot be made up to create a troll story from our end all we need is an explanation if they could provide it. In the common interest it doesn't happen again.

I can't tell from this story but it sounds like the deeds got dumped because he was overweight. Not to put too fine a point on it, but he could easily have put the heavier items in his bank and retained the lighter items on his person. Or used packies. Casting bless on himself to circumvent a measure intended to prevent overweight players from xferring seems...not wise.

His fault, and knowing how the game works I feel 99% confident in saying he will never get those items back if they are truly lost. I would double check the bank and the transfer crate, but if they're gone they're gone, and they won't be replaced.

It was probably coincidence. I'm guessing the bag of deeds was either the first or last item he put on himself as he was filling up for the transfer.

If weight was the problem the first time around the transfer was stopped. Then casting the spell to up his capacity still wouldn't matter, as whoever is God up there on the transfer scene would simply deny the transaction again but it pushed on you see. They allowed an overweight passenger GO ahead?

Simply denying the transfer like the first time was the best thing to do if there was a problem on the weight or whatever, then other options would have been taken. Like a prompt saying you are unable to move because you are carrying too much weight or S__T like that huh? They do that don't they?

Now there's the issue, the points on packie, bank etc etc are well taken but you see he didn't have that many items to carry along just his treasured collection. Altogether less than 125 items but a bit over 400 stones on the backpack.

    Coincidence? LMAO (JOHO)

  12. Obviously the GMs stole the mini-house deed collection and have already divided the spoils among themselves. Truly a sinister plot worthy of the title "HORROR STORY!!"

Thanks for the heads up, and good advice from Sarsmi, esp about putting the heavy stuff in the bank. I distrust packhorses too, unless I have no choice, then I dump the least valuable stuff on them while the valuable stuff I leave in my bank.

The squelch is because you are not supposed to say (includes power words from spell casting I think) or do anything when the transfer starts.

The transfer will probably debuff every effect you have on you, including the bless...

Unfortunately, I don't think the mini house deeds will be replaced...have you checked the ground where your bro started the transfer? On the off-chance that they dropped to the ground?

    Harlequin,

Yeah everything checked out before the incident he was alone in the Inn. The squelched thingy is what really bothers us considering GM's use it to mute a player. In this case it was used to freeze my bro from any counter action like logging out to stop the transfer.

For immediately after blessing himself to comply with the weight requirement he was "squelched". Come to think of it even if he blessed himself to carry more weight he still had extra baggage did he? He would have been denied just the same on his next try. But someone decided to do the "Squelch" on him who they are only UO knows for sure if they employ folks to do the transfers.

Oh he has resigned himself to the loss and is OK and will still be around for SA.
Thanks all for all the reminders to avoid these strange incidents totally hard to believe can happen but does.

you can always check the character transfer log file that is in your EA Games folder (on my computer it's located here: C:\Program Files\EA Games\Ultima Online 9th Anniversary Collection\translog.txt)
    - it keeps track of all xfers your account has made (or it's supposed to anyway) and it lists the shard you xferred to, the date, and everything that you brought with you. he should check that file and maybe it will help.

The translog on the 9th Anniversary only showed previous tranfers prior to this one. I would like to paste them but thought otherwise to first preserve my bro privacy. Your right every bit of items appears to the last detail on transfers.

So it never happened how the heck is he in another shard? This gets weirder,
no tranlog doc file on KR folder too.

thanks though for this bit of info you gave to check on.

that sucks. ya, that's why i added in the "it's supposed to anyway" because i've had that happen too - where i've successfully transferred but there's no record of it in that file. oh well, it was worth a look. it is really too bad that sometimes transfers go amok - i have read other similar stories where everything xfers over except a few things and there's no way to get them back.

Squelched is just a system message, no one stole his stuff (neither player nor GM), and with xfers being so pricey I'd not be inclined to try to reproduce the event, but I'd send in a bug report with exact details of what occurred and maybe they will recheck the overweight thing. However I think that was put in place in order to thwart dupers (not sure) so they may not want to mess with it. Better to report it anyways, if you feel like it's a bug.

Hrm now that I think about it I'm trying to remember if you can cast spells after you've started the transfer process. I haven't xsharded in a while, but I seem to remember that you can't really do anything after it gets started.

Also I'd expect that the token would have reappeared in his backpack once the transfer didn't go through. Yeah I'd definitely bug report it, it should cancel if you are overweight (if that's intended) instead of remaining open.

Of course if your brother had the token restored and then tried to bless himself and re-use the token, that's a different thing altogether. Bless doesn't last very long, expecially with low or no eval, so if his character tried to show up on the new shard overweight it might have decided to dump or poof the last thing added to his bag...

Shard transfers have been not the best invention in UO history. They opened doors for exploits, and they emphasize the item focus of this game. However, this statement will not help you with your problem.

Too item centered gameplay is what hurts this game most, and it was a mistake to put too powerful and rare items into that game. UO should be about community, not about items. However, this statement will not help you with your problem.

I guess, things like these can always happen in any game. You could contact the helpdesk, but their strict policy is that no item will ever be replaced. Which is contradictionary to turning UO into an item-centered game. But it is policy. Which will not help you either. All you can do is to tell them about the issue, and hope that they will fix it so not too many other people will suffer from this.

The Squelch state is applied to player characters during the transfer along with many other "immobolize/non-interact" states. These are usually done so quickly before the disconnect that players don't see them. This was not interference from outside the automated system.

I'm sorry to hear about your loss, and urge you to use the in-game GM contact form to request assistance within the game.

I feel Hawkeye Pykes advise is the best thing to do now and move on.

Imagine that 50 rare minihouse deeds all gone the first to be packed and secured on the backpack because of it's probably priceless value to the collector all kaputz.

It would have been a consolation if one deed was even left out not to be err bumped off but it was all gone mysteriously as if an unseen hand picked it up from the get go.

It was logical to note if the bump off was random other less valued items together with the deeds in the same bag should have been taken too. Instead they were left out and moved to the other bag which contained the other not so valuable keepsakes for instance other deeded deco.

The nagging question will echo forever why were the mini house deeds singled out?

We feel that a computer on automatic mode not unless programmed to do so can do that don't you think? This incident is really one for the books thanks all for sharing in the loss in this way UO is a community after all! You all are number 1!!

Remember the timeline of events the first try was denied because of too much weight my bro couldn't carry other than the fact it exceeded the allowed weight for the backpack to handle. Instinctively he blessed himself hoping to do the drill again thinking the token was in his backpack.

Then came the paralyzing prompt "SQUELCHED" within a few minutes he was on the other shard only to find his collection gone. Truly it is pitiful and more doubtful he can go through the ordeal of collecting the items he even often went to pains in getting outside the shards he played in.

Let them know all about this?

Perhaps maybe but no need people have spoken here on this thread already.
To paraphrase everybody "Better Luck Next Time."

  22. Just a thought, but has he asked a GM to come and check his "ghost pack"? It's possible it could have been placed there. It's worth a shot anyway.

That's worth a try hehe it's over we feel checking won't bring the deeds back right.

You know how when you cross a server boundary, your strength increase jewelry flickers where you see your strength drop and then immediately increase? Perhaps this was the case with the bless spell as well. Perhaps it flickered during the transfer and valued items were dropped along the way.

Sorry to hear about your loss. Even if you aren't an item-only player, losing anything that you worked for and cherished is a bummer. :(

I would definately call a GM and have them double check, and also fill out a bug report. This could be a bug with the deeds themselves that only happens with a Shard Transfer. I seem to remember reading about this with other items, but I am not positive on that.

Hope that you enjoy your experiences on the new shard! :)

Actually, I believe you answered the question yourself:
As Sarsmi mentioned earlier, because he ended up overweight (at some point in the last of the transfer), the system bumped out the first thing put in his pack - in this case, the whole bag of deeds moved as one into his backpack all counted as the first item and so the whole bag got dumped.

Sorry for his loss, but at least you may help others to know they should never trust the effects of a temporary boost to help them through the transfer. I do hope your brother sticks around and enjoys SA, and eventually he'll gather up new items to enjoy *smiles*.
