I am interested in how often you guys really use the new ships and cannons to hold or participate in PVP Sea Battles. If you like, explain in this thread!

  2. i typically don't look for sea battles, but i will stay and fight if one runs into me. it usually happens when looting another players boat, they seek revenge and come after me with another ship.

Does getting scuttled on my unarmed fishing vessel by a Siege bucanneer count? :D

I've found it to be a good source of the fancy woods my logger very rarely gets and a good source of barbed leather.

I typically go after the merchant ships with light cannon to make the hard to get saltpeter go farther. Even with a 1260 luck suit boosted to 1810 luck with the 10th Year Anniversary Statue for the first hour, over three hours of ocean cliff mining north of Minoc only gets me enough for 25 to 35 heavy cannon shots.

I'll soon be into my last two 60k commodity deeds of saltpeter from the 19 alchemist days. About 196 scuttling with heavy cannon fire. About 30% (?) more just using light cannons. After it's gone, I'll be limited to 4 or 5 a week by the lack of saltpeter and will probably just start selling it to the vendor at Sea Market and pack away the ships.

Aye, but the question referred to PvP sea battles, not to fighting NPC ships.

Stick around on Siege. My poor boat's been scuttled 4 times. Nightstalker got all my cannons, I haven't replaced them. Dr Steel was quite generous, he returned all my armor and was pleased with his 'booty' of a white net.

This is what i used to love about pvp, you had some nice people who returned the items that you needed and was worthless to them and you also had the scoundrals who took everything.

But they still stuck around, ressed you and had a chat.

Nowadays PVP just seems to be full of kids mouthing off and being down right pricks....

When i have time [as have loads of work on atm with uni] i wana jump on siege and try it out.

I dont mind getting killed and looted and killing and looting, when its maturly delt with and a good old "fair play" "next time ill get you ;)"

Actually I think that people avoid sea battle due to the high price of the shots... 1k per cannon shot is too expensive... surely the yew gate pvp is cheap than sea battles :D

I fight at sea maybe once a month with the RP guild Moonglow Navy.

With my own boat alone though.. I have yet to attempt a pirate.

Even if i got the booster for free, my answer would still be Never - I don't pvp, and this would be close to doing that, to me

  13. Sea Battles are out of the question for someone who prefers to play alone. The pirate kings are tougher than Dark Fathers to bring down, which is ludicrous, and for paltry little profit.

I understand this was a feature in mind to do as a community, but again, if you are a lone wolf, the only real advantages to the galleon is the extra storage space.

Plus, and this is nothing that you havent heard before, but the cannon interface is soooo clunky. Realism is great, but in a game setting, when it starts to be a nusiance, we probably can tone it back.

Occasionally on siege...not due to lack of finding ships but due to the fact that It takes me one day out of the week doing nothing but mining and crafting to make enough ammo to take down 4 or 5 ships. I go by about the same rules as when I kill someone at land, only take what I actually want, no point dry looting someones armor/fishing poles/etc...does nothing for me and keeps them from playing. Rare fish steaks, mibs, cannons, ammo, artifacts, or anything else of value though :)

Prince Caspian: The question was on PVP sea battles, not PVM. Though for PVM it's far more worth the time to take down the merchant ships, good rum and generally near 1000 of either valorite or barbed leather (sometimes less and some horned or verite, etc..). With the random resources now I think I've gotten more bloodwood off merch ships than off of trees.

    I don't PvP so never.

Even in PvM I have yet to do a sea battle, the cannon crafting and stuff is just too much.

I answered this poll without reading the body of the thread itself, and I suspect a lot of other people did based on the replies. I'ma give it a while and do a similar poll for PVE ship battles.

I have a great time fighting on the boats whenever I can. I love rolling up on fishing ships and demanding to be given permission to board and make sure they just have lobster traps and fish stuff. If they don't let us aboard, cannons start firing. And this is all aside from RP fights

I don't think I'd enjoy it very much. The mechanics are too clunky in my opinion.

Though, even if the mechanics of it all were better, the time and gold sink for just preparing to fight is gigantic.

    Seriously, ship PvP battles?

Scuttling a ship that nobody is even on isn't a 'battle,' its just being an ass.

I seriously doubt many PvPers rush out to spend hundreds of thousands on materials to fight battle where they will receive....nothing...as their reward.

Aside from RPers RPvPing, the likelihood of this is somewhere below the chance of a zombie apocalypse.

After about two weeks spent to get 5 orc ships, and a VERY brief stint to get a white cloth dye tub, I haven't seriously participated in ship battle in months.

*imagines hardcore PvPers using the unwieldly HS systems to do battle*

I'm going to go giggle now.

Seriously, I think that sea battles are a great variation of usual PvP and player interaction, in theory. I'd be interested why so few people do it (opposed to regular PvP, which however isn't too popular in UO anymore either).

For me personally it is the hassle of creating charges and fuses, which is too time consuming and expensive. And the extensive material you have to waste on repairs. That's why I only participate in a sea battle maybe once a month.

In theory, the High Seas booster should have been awesome.

    In theory.

In practice, it is a resource/time hog with little reason to continuously play, PvP or PvM. Nobody likes tedium, yet at its core this booster seems designed around it.

Like Martyna's player, I see ship-to-ship PvP as primarily, perhaps even exclusively, an RP tool.

Let's see.....A ship-based fight could occur raiding someone on their way to the Terra Sanctum champion spawn. But it's much easier to just fight on the island itself. If they hadn't changed the CoM base to Verity Isle from Magincia Island, sea-based fights to prevent sigil runs could've been possible....Save for the fact that it's much easier to just have a fight on the island itself. And they did change the base, so this is a counter-factual at any rate. I guess you could use it to try and disrupt someone's Scalis run, but even if someone does do a Scalis run in Fel what are the odds of just running into them? And if you're trying to control Corgul runs in Fel wouldn't it be easier to raid people at the spawn itself, rather than on the way?

At the end of the day, like Martyna's player, I see ship-to-ship PvP as primarily, perhaps even exclusively, an RP tool.

That is, when you think about it, not really a bad thing by any stretch.

If it were less time consuming, cost efficient and you didn't have to do so many stupid things to fire a cannon more might be doing it. I'll keep my money till then.

Come join in on some sea battles for RPvP on Catskills! Make a pirate, make a cargo ship captain, or a naval officer... it's much more fun that way.

Hey Bianca, this was originally not meant to be an advertising thread for Catskills RP. ;)

While I found the handling of cannons too complicated in the beginning, today I actually think it makes sense and adds to the sea battle experience.

This being said, I agree that sea battles today are only used in rare RP situations, and practically not at all in regular PvP situations. This may have several reasons, one being that PvP is generally almost dead anyway. Another one could be that there still are not enough reasons to use a boat (mosty cause traveling spells are more common). The most important reason though might be that the player activity is steadily decreasing.

So, you think there's a degree to which there'd be more non-RP ship to ship PvP if there were more PvPers?

    I disagree.

PvPers broadly speaking fight under two conditions. One, just to practice fight and show off (I conflate "for the sake of competition itself" under "show off"). Two, to get stuff. (Scrolls; Champ Spawn Artifacts; someone else's silver; Sigils; etc.)

Condition One can be met far easier without ships, even if they do improve ship combat mechanics. If Condition Two can somehow be met you'll see more ship to ship non-RP PvP combat to some degree, no matter how few players there are.

Frankly I'm 100% ok with ship to ship PvP being used primarily as an RP tool; I don't get why someone wouldn't be. How many pure RP tools ARE there really in this game? And this isn't even one per se it's just most widely used this way.

The whole idea of sea battles and piracy would imply looting and plundering. With the trammelization of the rules of UO even in fel, thats hardly what we have.

When I look at these poll results, I cannot help but wonder:

Why does someone design such an elaborate system like ship-to-ship battles with cannons (and I really think it is a fantastic system) when the constraints are so messed up that nobody really wants to utilize this system? Wouldn't it be wise to adjust the constraints?

You would think, I love the concept, implementation total failure, from the code to the 5 day beta period. This could have been great but it ended up just pissing people off, IMHO.

My 138 month account says, "Bah...humbug." No interest, As far as I'm concerned, this and the last one, with the imbuing and the "dungeon" that came with it, has done nothing for me. Just more of the same, meaning wasted space and effort.

I play alone and for fairly short periods, like many others, and they keep thinking in terms of groups and guilds, which, as far as I can tell, are a minority.
We need more of this and more that for the independent, solitary hunters. WTFU.

I would be interested in knowing how many of the non-participants and seldom-participants are people who do not play in guilds or other groups. I have a feeling that for them, like me, the mechanics of group play (timing in game, and advanced planning of personal at home activities to coincide) do not make multiple sea battles possible on an ongoing basis.

I love this kind of stuff, but just am not able to participate because my schedule unwinds at the last minute. I hate to have people depend on me, then I don't show up, and vice versa.

It is time for the developers to investigate this. The results of this pole are shocking, considering the amount of programming time involved. The money is where the players are. You cannot shoehorn them into something they cannot do, regardless of their desire.

still dont even own the high seas booster. nothing in the content for me. im not interested in double clicking for fishing gains. im not interested in boss monsters that commonly drop nothing (osiredon). im not interested in all the complaints ive been seeing.

i think it is a good value for the space upgrade, seeing as the other one is around the same price and you don't get any extra content. i just don't need the space.

  40. Its to dam complicated. No risk, now reward. And all the loot is dirt cheap to buy on the 2ndary market.

That being said. I like fishing at times. I would use the cannons to blast monsters.

The whole PvP ship thing is just Too much!

So 16 people out of all the shards ship PvP at least once a month ?

1 Guy that ship Pvps many times a day.
( Wonder how he does that all by himself ? )

Face it this whole thing was not implemented very well.

Too time consuming for preparations .
Too time consuming trying to find someone to fight.
Too expensive both for preparation and repairs.
Too complicated to equip for and firing of cannons.
Too little reward for all this cost and time.

Too bad it might have been fun if the developers had put a little more thought into it. :twak:

I think it has been Too long since any of them actually played the game!

    This.

The lack of players may be one of the major reasons. You already said: "too time consuming trying someone to fight". But I wanted to point this issue out once more.
