open beta for SA, only 24 days left till release,

should we not see 19999 people rummage around here on stratics instead of
    137 (58 members/79 visitors)

if the 79 visitors is all we get back in game, then i am a little scared :sad3:

You're a little naive if you thought that Stygian Abyss was going to bring in a mass of never-played-uo people.

It's not even going to be on store shelves.

Maybe the other 19,862 are playing UO instead of reading the boards.
Usually when I play UO I don't have the forums open.

I feel the same way as Lynk, they really need to put hard copies in stores. If I had spent over a year working on a product I would do my best to get it everywhere possible and get sales up.

SA was to correct the failure that was KR...

I would hope to see that EA would have some marketing campaign up their sleeves to get new subscribers....they have to do something

I DID say that I was hoping that Stygian Abyss would have put again an Ultima Online box on stores' shelves....

Digital downloads are very usefull, but for those who already know what they want.

Store's shelves are good to get brand new subscribers or perhaps people who played Ultima years back and forgot about it.

To see a box in the "New Arrival" section of a store shelf might get more people interested in playing the game.

Digital download I am not so sure.

digital download is the way most games will be distributed they are still charging the same but don't pay for packaging! there for it takes less people buying the game to show a profit .... UO will never again be sold on store shelves!

Only if there are no screenshot on the back, I'm afraid. Only few players put content over graphic.
  11. Maybe stratics aint what it used to be.
    No offense.
Maybe they are tired of me.
  12. Only a small percentage of UO players actually read and/or post on Stratics. How many people are here is no indication of how many people are playing. Plus it's the middle of the day on a work day, so there's not going to be too many people here anyway.

Even if I really love UO, when was your last visit to a gaming store ?

Hebus does have a point. I was in my local gamespot a few weeks ago. In a store that's probably 20x60 with far too many floor displays to make the store safe to walk though, they had one small 4 foot by 3 foot rack of PC games. Maybe, maybe 75 games total. It's a console based world now days. Hell, my Xbox has better graphics than the last new PC game I bought.

Despite that sad fact, I'd still like to see a new UO box in stores. Or at the very least a poster or stragety guide.

For one, a good majority don't waste their time on Stratics, (no offense Stratics) I know alot of vets that don't come here and Do know about it.

Secondly, Marketing (as mentioned) distribution, have serious costs. When a product doesn't sell.....then there's the returning of it.

As in the music industry, digital downloading will be the way to go. True, there's still crap going to the shelves, and I mean crap.

Lastly, UO is practically the best game out there in it's genre. What you can do is unlimited.

Remember, again, like music, the test of time ensures legacy. Bands come and go, but others stick around, and successfully make a buck touring....even into the AARP stages of life.....then a canes needed.....ask Steven Tyler.(sorry.....had to toss that in...though early Aerosmith was the best.)

You get my drift.....let's see where WoW is at in 10 years.

    boys and gals,

no need for a box on stores' shelves at this time.
because UO had in the past decade over 1000 000 of customers
mythic would be satisfied if 15-25% would return permanent
we should be glad if SA catch this point

addition: if you cant bring back lost customers it makes no sense to lure new customers

It's not only the problem of the graphics...

In my eyes, UO does have the best content of all the MMOs currently on the market. Having tried many other MMOs, I've been very quickly bored with them (really a matter of weeks). UO : I'm still there after about 8 years and still not bored.

But how can you explain this on a retail box ? It's simple : sadly, you can't.

On a retail box, you can put shiny concept art, epic blabla and pictures of the game (!)

In stores, on the extremely reduced PC games sections remaining, you still could try to sell UO :

But then, here comes the second problem of UO : try putting a box with pics of 2D or SA followed by the mention "Monthly fees 12.99$"... you'll sell nothing. When there's games like Guild Wars on the same shelf, with way not the same content of UO but still nice to play, with good graphics, populated and most important : free to play.

And putting a box on shelves doesn't automatically equal sales. You'll also need reviews of gaming magazines : people being informed that "there's a great 12 years old game making a brilliant come back and being for sale at your favorite store since september the 8th". Else, the majority will only ask himself "Why isn't this game in the 2$ bargain bin ?"

I think we really need to accept the fact that UO will never hit the stores again.

It still is a really good game, but it forgot to follow the evolution of the gaming industry these last years (of course keeping the same content and liberty that makes it one of the best games around). And it is just to late to magically reach the actual status of the market with the SA client or expansion.

We can really be happy that the game is still here, with a very low population (but still enough people to play with), and only count on word of mouth to bring new players in.

And of course trying to keep the existing ones : consolidating the player base !

If that is how you think I am so glad you don't work for EA.
