I Agree! Let's GO BACK to Them Good Ol Days!!!!

Discussion in 'UO Spiels N Rants' started by Prince Caspian, Nov 16, 2010.

  1. Ok, yeah, the game is getting too docile and safe. Let's GO BACK to the Dread Lord Days, ladies and germs!!! I just have sooo many happy, happy memories that I just can't WAIT to live all over again, yes sir!

Back when the only "item insurance" was not to log on at all?? Yeeehaw!!

Getting PKed by six red names rampaging across the screen and getting looted of your entire night's work, back when 1k gold was actually a lot? Oh yes.

Desperately scrambling around my house because my neighbors once again were waiting for me to recall in to ambush me, knowing if they get my key (which was REQUIRED to enter your house and was stealable and lootable), I lose 8 months of items to these asswipes? Ha! Good times!

Back when there were NO secure ANYTHINGS, and if someone got within clickable distance to your containers, they could help themselves? Whoot!!

Hoping to make it to the bank before being mobbed by throngs of throwaway characters who could steal your items easily, who had absolutely positively NO penalty whatsoever for being guardwhacked? Makes me smile.

Logging on to find out some scumbag used an exploit to get into my house, and since houses were 100% NOT secured in ANY way, has cleaned out over a YEAR of hard work? Delightful.

Seeing gold duping rampant, quickly shifting the financial power wholly to the dickweeds who were cheating, while massively devaluing honest player's savings? Blissful!

To a combat system that virtually guarantees that a generalized character doesn't stand a chance at ALL against a templated PvP character... oops, my bad, that's still here.

Getting your mules smashed by a PK and losing the fruits of your labor for the last hour to some little twerp to smite you and then smack talk to your ghost like such a one-sided pointless gank was some kind of proof he's a superior player? A BARREL of mongbats.

    Where do I sign up!?!?

I have no interest in a Classic Shard.

That said there is a nostalgic / sadomasochistic number who would be ... delighted with such a scenario. Several former players have informed me that they would be tempted back by; 1) Pre-AoS, 2) Pre-Publish 16, 3) Pre-Renaissance, 4) All of the Above.

If I am not mistaken those of us that choose to remain on production shards won't be impacted.

There is a demand for a product. Catering to that demand will provide a revenue boost; and we won't know if that is major or minor until it goes live. Revenue would benefit the entire base. The sum needs of this shard would be, 1) Server Space, 2) an EM Program.

  4. I suppose if folks are there by choice, and enjoy it, that's their choice and no harm at all.

But it won't be the same, because the wolves have lost their sheep to prey on. The PKs thrived on easy prey (mules, newbies, PvM characters who couldnt or wouldn't master PvP) who DIDN'T want to play in an environment that rewards preying on other players.

So, now that there's gonna be a forest full of wolves, and no sheep, I think they're gonna find it's not much fun after all.

But hey, again, people will be there by choice so why not. But if they think they are gonna relive the Dread Lord Days of havoc, I really doubt that's gonna happen.

So you make a long post about why hardcore classic UO sucks, without realizing that if it were created, YOU DON'T HAVE TO PLAY?!?

Seems to work for some people: 'If you don't like it, don't play.'

OMG, the reds figured out that you can actually work with other people in this mmorpg. BAN THEM!

These incidents only happened during what, the first year of UO's life? I'm pretty sure the majority wanting a classic shard can live without this era.

Yeah I know right! Cause dupers and cheaters have since been eradicated and we've been enjoying a dupe/cheat free game since 1998! I'll be damned if we go back to rampant cheating. I mean, it's not like they're around these days..

For reals! It's not like that templated PvP character had to start from scratch and work his way up too...

Again, this would only happen if you chose to play on a classic shard again.

Seriously though, what is the point of your thread?

Funny this thread, talking about how horrible a classic shard will be. The whole part about no secures in a house, yeah that wouldn't be part of the classic shard. Perhaps you should take a real good look about what era of UO people want for the "classic" shard before ranting like an idiot.

After all, if you don't like it, don't play it. No one is going to force you to play a classic shard if you don't want it. Stay on your own shard. I don't think I need to say anything more though, Boba essentially covered it all.

One thing that seems to bemuse me is that some people assume that only Murderers and Thieves wish to play a classic shard. This is entirely wrong, the majority of people I know playing free classic shards (and who are interested in a potential EA classic shard) have standard templates and play standard blue characters. It is the harsh backdrop, which they find themselves adventuring in that provides the enhanced meaning and purpose to their 'standard' activities.

Furthermore, there are many guilds which thrive on the whole concept of good versus evil and in a classic shard they get to take on the very worst elements of society. A chance to bring victory to those who follow a virtuous path.

<shakes head> PC, PC, PC ... who pee'd in yer Cheerios? Good rant, tho ... brought back a lot of memories.

I wouldn't mind a pre-AOS shard at all. A pre-Tram one would also be fine. Just not back to 1997-1998 era of the housing! <grin> But using keys to actually lock the doors is not a bad idea.

As others have pointed out, you wouldn't need to drop everything and play the shard (if it came about) at all. <shrug> But I would ... in a heartbeat. Even reopen at least one of the accounts for it.

Indeed. Much like Siege. Not everyone who plays Siege is in it for PvP.

I would absolutely love to play on a pre-aos shard, forsaking all my other main shards for it. I would also love a pretam shard as well... and I'm not a pk. I have pk'd and I still do now and then when I need something to do or some twink gets diarrhea of the mouth, but I am a dedicated crafter. The insane amount of work (and luck) required to get your resources will make it very easy to carve out a comfortable fortune as well as making armours and weapons for the pk's with the materials they provide...looted off myself and other mules at some point.

That was life back then. UO was a challenge. This is not and was not 'World of instant gratification'. You had to work for everything and the risk of losing it made it exciting as hell. If UO had been a carebear playground in its infancy, NONE of the hardcore players would have stuck around. Alot of people hated the open rules life and were very excited for tram to be intigrated...but that doesn't mean they hated the game...they kept playing. No matter how many times their miner got smashed and looted... They raged and then they went right back out and mined some more ore. Not everyone...but the only ones that counted.

Don't want a classic shard, don't play on it. Don't like working for your 'ding', then go play another game. *unhappy players*complaining about how tough it is (or was) are the reason past UO developers dumbed down the game to near wow like proportions. Get a grip.. *edited*..and either play the game or log the F#$% out. Btw.. the answer is 42. *hugs and kisses*

I missed when I used to go to the Deceit "training wall" (yes, when back in the day people used it to train instead of stupid golems) in Felluca....YES FELLUCA.....

I missed it more when I was a murderer, and me and my friend would run in and time two energy fields to block everyone training there, and then unload explosion pots and fire fields until everyone was dead.

I miss the sense of risk and adventure.....I think it is moronic that you go into dungeons and the only thing to fear are the monsters....which aren't fearful at all....they don't loot you dry....oh but they can't....everything in insured.

    Whoops.

Sorry, saw this, had to rant. = )

You said 1000 gold pieces was worth alot and being worried about your house in the same post.
    :)
house prices arent that much cheaper than they were in those days so also most people couldn't afford the houses. Yet people seem to have 1000x more gold to spend and only every other character isnt a Grand Master which in those days, the first few months was rare. So delete your character and bring the post back. Some did get scammed out of houses but once the trick was found people adapted, evolve or die should be the Ultima motto.

Hey id play. One of my best memories of UO was when me and some friends jumped a guy, killed him, and found a blacksmith deed on him haha. It was a mansion to us. And breaking into peoples houses was great fun, damn those piles upon piles of junk that you just knew something valuable was under.

Heh, I remember back then the early form of "IDOC"s were going from house to house and seeing who forgot to lock their door on the way out. Scored a few jackpots that way.

There was no secures but you can lockdown chests and store your items in there then lock it (which wont really do anything because it can be picked). Oh and all containers has only 400 stone 125 item limit this mean you cannot store bulk regs in your house container and people usually leave them sitting right on top the very top of their "wall of chests". :thumbup1:

If you were lucky enough back in the days to own a large house (none 7x7) you can easily store all your items in one of the rooms you have and lock the interior door (house owner only) which cannot be lock-picked. Just make sure no stealther stealth in behind you and we ALWAYS close ours doors and lock them. Oh and people who lives in 7x7s usually has a lot of objects lined up and locked down right at the entrance and their storage chest will be all the way in the back against the back wall... you know you have to actually know "how to play UO" or as you can see, a few people hated even leaving their house. Talk about immitating mid-evil age, old school UO is by far the most realistic in that aspect learn to protect yourself and if you are unable, then never leave guardzone or your home forever ever ever more ever.

I agree tho, asking people to learn to play a game that does not have player commands like "/godmode on" or "/kill [enemy character name]" enabled... can be very challenging.

Btw I dont know how can you hit jackpots opening other peoples front door because you do NOT have to unlock your front door when you leave the house. You were only required to unlock it when you are entering. You probably extremely lucky that sometimes noobs unlock their doors to get into their house and not remembering locking it when they got inside.

Ahh it was dark and mean in the old UO thats true. Many trash mouth ****ty players werent able to survive because UO had A COMMUNITY. Where smithy players will stand around a smith shop helping people repair/craft their armors/weapon because they gain skill for free. RP beggers telling stories ect. I mean it was actually joyful to play UO like inviting friends to come over to your house and training skills by sparring each other or simply sit in the living room and chat. This "virtual reality of ZERO PVP TONS OF MOUTH RUNNERS IN GODMODE (tram)" friendly UO really means nothing but GOLD/USD$/ITEMS = UO.

    sigh

First, there was no stealth back then, that skill was introduced later. Second, you're not very smart if you can't figure out what I'm talking about. Noob :)
