if you read the majority of my posts...
But I have to say, the posts since last nights *event beginning* slay me. A few points, if I may:

    1. Lots are complaining about cancelling rl events and dates and going out and stuff, to be there...*shakes head* If you cancelled rl for UO, you need to tell your therapist, and not UHall [IMG]

    2. We were told up front, not much happening last night, just a kickoff. So where's the beef?

    3. Those who did show, undoubtedly were logged, as well as who was carrying blackrock on them. We have been told, and told, that those who did show with blackrock last night will be rewarded during the event...I figure loot maybe, being tagged as "faithful" will be like having 3000 luck or something, who knows??

    4. Those who didnt show, get on in there tonight, you're participation is expected and needed, and you will still get the goodies [IMG].

So let's give this one a chance gang, and not belittle what team we have left too harshly before we *know* what's going on.

    /end fanboyism

  3. I regret my complaint now....Made me seem part of the "gloom and doom," complain about everything crowd.

But the substance of my complaint was thus....EA things have never started on-time before. Not only did it start exactly on time, but it ran about 2 minutes.

I came on about 2 minutes after it ended.

And for that I am gonna miss out on something tonight.

I'll still show up, but I have a weird feeling I'm really gonna miss those 4 minutes.

I will take a stab at this one. If you do not mind?

    2. We were told up front, not much happening last night, just a kickoff. So where's the beef?

I think the beef comes with how it was posted. Not the event (or lack thereof depending on your prospective). Yes it was posted on the herald, and yes it was posted on the unofficial forums here. But why was it not posted on the patch screen? Why was in not shouted by the ingame towncriers? This is perfect for them. And if they not longer work, lets remove them and not confuse people. Or why was it not placed in the global message system, like when they notify you the shard is going down?

I read these pages and the herald, as I think you do. But many new(er) players do not. Why? because so many things are outdated or not updated that many players no longer bother or are confused by the contradictions in the herald.

EAmythic says they wish to communicate better with their players, but yet they do not use 3 ingame systems, made for just this reason? It is not like EAMythic just threw this event together, it was suppose to be run last year, but there were problems and it was postponed.

Some people were told, not all. The post was very vague about this and I'd rather play UO or go out on my dates than sort through the UHall posts to get every little details.

Sorry to pick up on the one part of your post about what was about the pain but let's follow this logic for a moment ...

You feel surprised an event started on time, you would have liked warning that it would start on time and that important stuff would happen quickly. Perhaps the best solution would be to have a little demonstration of the fact that punctuality will be important for the event?

But wait ... that's exactly what happened ... tonight is the event, last night was the warning not to be late.

(of course tonight I'm worrying about the technicalities of fulfilling a pledge to participate in Earth Hour tonight ... I guess I will start a little early so that I can cheat a little at the end so to not be late)

I agree with sablestorm, UO events are rare, so attending one kinda makes playing the game for years, worthwhile. Therapists.....dude, at least some of us don't sit for hours on end parked behind a computer, that's where therapy comes in.

Posting the event.....some in-game advertising would help....the technology exists, they can do it.

2 day event, no, a one day event. I'm pretty sure they mapped it out this way, and knew what they were doing. However, due to the complainers, they had to make it seem extended......oh well. Whatta ya gonna do.

    later.

    [email protected] man...
I have a job, work 7 days a week right now
Mostly 9-10 hour days...so if the "parked behind a computer" was directed at me, +.1 to parry!! [IMG]

And to Sable, yeah, it is sad that things have gotten to the point, where we will grab at any bone tossed to us like a starving Dire Wolf...(and I'm glad ya can get a date anytime ya want LOL)

but the point remains, we were notified, we were told...
And even the new players know where stratics is, and if they dont read here, or on the Herald, shame on em, not the devs fault.
I will agree on the criers and system messages, but then, you will stil have peeps griping because "I wasn't logged in where I could see the messages!"
So here (read anything with [News] in the title) and the Herald are still the best options for notification, IMO.

Patch screen messages, same problem with system messages, they only work when ya logging in...

    ...

I look forward to tonight's event. Last night was fun on LS mostly BEFORE the event happened as we milled and joked about, shot fireworks, debated blackrock and so on.

Only real downside was a lack of specific crowd control which I hope will be remedied for tonight (i.e. Blackrock sends pet dragons to an different alternate dimension which when they return will turn them into mongbats [IMG]).

how can you say it was vague and some were told and not all?
the post on the herald *clearly says*.........
    * Event occurs over two days (meaning probably 2 different days)

    * Day One: Do not be concerned if you show up and it all goes up in smoke. Just being there sets the stage for your interactions in Day Two....(meaning probably nothing going to happen day 1, just really try to be there)

    Also

    *dates and shards listed*
    example:
    Friday, 3/28/08, 9PM EDT (GMT -4)
    Saturday, 3/29/08, 9PM EDT (GMT -4)
followed by a list of shards....led me to believe that 2 different dates seen there ...could mean the 2 different days they are speaking of with the * event occurs over 2 days comment*
and the list of shards directly under those 2 dates led me to believe that those were the dates and times for those shards......
we all have RL things going on, but if you know that there is an event coming that has been spoken about for weeks now...and you want to be there for whatever your reasons, be it pixel crack collecting or just to be there..you would take it upon yourself to check the herald and uo hall for any information about the event would you not?

It is possible that the Event actually starting on time, and it's short duration
were by design. It is possible that those that were there and with Blackrock
have been marked in some way that will set them apart from the others tonight,
and that might be where the "choosing loyalties" part comes in.

If the duration was longer, and more people "marked?", it might have thrown
things totally off balance. (not that that hasn't stopped the Devs in the past) [IMG]

    ok seriously you're right.
I missed last night because something in RL came up that couldn't be ignored. I never dreamed I would come home and see on the forums all this horrible complaining.
I am so sad I missed it and all these people who actually got to be there are complaining? Even though they get something special today just for showing up yesterday.
I am hoping to get a piece of this "enchanted blackrock" from someone just in case it's the blackrock and not the character that gets the special goodies.
How sad that there is so much complaining. If I were Draconi I wouldn't be surprised if he said "Stick it in your ear" and deleted everything and just forgot the whole dealio.
Not one damn person seemed to care that he was working after hours on this... and today on a Saturday to continue it. Not one "Thanks for caring enough to spend your free time with an in game event Draconi".
Sometimes it just makes me sick.

Draconi gets paid to do this for a living. We collectively pay his salary. Most of the complaints I'm seeing are that there was not much advance notice. And that once everyone got there not much happened. I'm sure Draconi has spent a lot of time working on this... would have been nice if someone else at EA had been on the ball and had something up a little more than the day before the event.

It's not Draconi's fault that the event was not properly publicized. That's not his job.

When he did show up it was mostly to tell everyone to stand back... Build something of great curiosity to everyone, then tell them to move away so they can't see what is going on. Interesting.

Incorrect. Draconi does not get paid to do *this* for a living. He isn't required in any way to spend his off time doing any sort of event. There's nothing in anyone's contract that says "To be a dev you are required to provide in game events for the playerbase"
He does these sort of things because of his love for the game. Nothing more.

lol yup, back in 97 you didnt have a herald to tell you that this would be happening on this day and at this time...or a uo hall, ..most of the time if you wernt logged in when something started to happen, you would just hear about it later on the owo page, the events were made aware to you by writing on the bottom left hand corner of your screen while they were happening, if ya missed that! it sucked to be you

If he sat at home called people on the telephone and asked them what time the event would be convenient for them and then called everyone back to let them know what the most popular time was for their shard people would still be complaining (omg i wasnt home for the call!!! or OMG Just because it was voted on by everyone else why shouldn't my vote for 2am be just as important!!!) so really it doesn't matter what he does.

the worst part of it all really are the ones who just dont grasp it! and refuse to go to the event tonight because they missed last night...now whats going to happen tomorrow is,, they will hear how all these people who were not at fridays event and who did not have blackrock, all ended up with items from looting during tonights event, they will have a story to tell about something that happend and have something to show for it maybe.......and then you will hear how they MUST replay the event now because they didnt go because they were not told they would be getting anything even though they were not there friday...its an outrage!!...WTFU people...go to the event...youve been told it doesnt really matter about last night, dont be crying tomorrow.

Are you kidding me? Do you have a copy of Draconi's contract handy? Not everyone has a 9-5 clock punching job. Many folks work "salaried" jobs which translates into... you come in whenever you have to and stay as long as needed to get the job done.

He does this out of his love of the game? I'm sure he loves UO, he did move to stay with the company... but get serious... he DOES get paid to do this.

BTW, if you read my post carefully you will see that I am in fact saying that Draconi is poorly supported by EA when these events occur. I'll quote myself if you dont mind: It's not Draconi's fault that the event was not properly publicized. That's not his job.

I'm salaried as well, I get paid to do a job, and given a minimum number of hours I am required to work.

I completely agree, Draconi didn't have to do this, but he did. They changed the schedules to try to fit in with time zones around the world

It's so much easier to flip one switch on then having to wait and flip 5 of them. They did this so that it would better fit in with people's schedules. Of course not everyone is going to be happy, but we don't hear anyone saying great another event in the middle of the night for half the world, or another event during the day while I'm still at work. I'm sure his contract doesn't say you will be required to work some nights and weekends, but even if it does, we should still appreciate what they are doing.

He loves the game, and he shows that in so many ways. What he does, he does for us, not because it's his job. If you went to work and did something for someone and they bashed you for it, how many times would you continue to do something nice for that person before you quit trying? If it were me, once, maybe twice. When I got bashed and bad mouthed for doing something nice because maybe it wasn't the right color, or the right time. I'd swear never to do anything nice for that person again. ( well this is not true, cause I'm a nice person) but you get the idea of what I'm saying. How many times does he have to be bashed for doing something nice before he gives up and just does his job and doens't do anything extra?

Lately u.hall has become a place of whiners and sometimes I just want to scream :grow up! it's a game, enjoy it or quit playing:

I'm not going to continue to speculate on Draconi's work contract.

I used to work a job where I was effectively "on-duty" a month at a time. If I told my boss I didnt want to work evenings or weekends I would have been asked to leave. I'm afraid I'm just not that sympathetic to the 9-5 mindset.

What would you say if the techs who do the daily server maintenance decided to do it during "normal business hours?" There are job functions which must be done outside regular business hours and guess what... player events fall into that category because they need to do things for us on weekends and evenings when most of us can play.

Now, for the record... I actually never criticized Draconi... perhaps it's best if folks read my posts before "reacting" to them.

    Hail All,

I'm sure I'm going to get flamed for this in some way, shape or form, but whatever.

I'd just like to remind you all that Draconi is one member of a team. Even if he's the project lead, its still a team that he works with. I'm very happy with the event at hand - I've been anticipating tonight all day! I just think we need to be giving thanks to more than just one person, even if we don't know who they are.

So thank you to Draconi AND HIS TEAM for working on the weekend and giving us, what I'm sure will be, a stellar event!

    Sincerely,
