maybe it's just me, but since i'm not colorblind, i always wondered why colorblind people actually care what color something is because they can't even see the color - where's the flaw in my logic?

if all helmets look the same colorwise - why not just pop down to the local npc and just buy a cheap one for 20 gold and call it a day - hehe

i would think colorblindness would be a real money saver :)

Achromatopsia (which is complete colour blindness) is actually rare. But lesser colour vision deficiencies are much more common. They don't leave you with a complete lack of colour perception though.

It would be rare to see a blaze as nutral, as yellow [ie blaze] is a mix of red and green, its verry rare to be blind to both.

Remember our corinors see red/blue/green any deficiency only affects 1 colour and rare to affect all 3 but even if it does, we grew up with black and white tv but we still des5ttinguished colors.

Just because someone is color blind, doesn't mean they cannot see colors at all. There are varying levels and degrees of colorblindness.

Me, for example, during the beta testing when soul forges were introduced (I think I can talk about this now....) I could not see the soul forge in Haven because it all blended in with the surroundings.

There are websites that will show you a photo, then show you the same photos with filters showing what people with varying degrees of colorblindness see.

I remember the first time I showed one of those sites to my wife and she said- wow, what a difference in color, is that what you really see? - my response- I don't see a difference between the images.

I have played with friends who are color blind and have made settings for them on my characters to accomodate them for reading and such... We who see color forget those who do not see the vivid colors we do. Cleon was so kind when he would tell me about what he saw whjen we hunted or crafted.. I am forever gratefull for his insight into this world of shades of grey... (ask some who have the vision difference to discribe what they see... you will be very surprised.)

FYI...most people, myself included, who are "Color Blind" are actually considered "Color Deficient".

The condition is caused by the number of color receptor rods and cones in the eye...color deficiency is caused by having fewer of these rods and cones than people with normal vision.

As was stated, someone who is monochromatic (only black and white and shades of gray) are extremely rare, and men are more color deficient than women, overall.

I didn't even know I was nearly 100% color deficient (I can really only see the sample number in the Sample Circle at the start of the test. Most of the rest are nondescript...no number at all to my eyes) until I joined the Navy at age 18.

People adjust their brains to interpret the less than accurate data from the eyes in the case of color deficiency. I see "Blue" and "Red"...just not the same as a person with the normal number of rods and cones. I cannot often discern Red and Green light, especially if they are very small and at a distance (like runway lights), so I can never pilot a plane. Low light green and browns are a major challenge.

I also use Pinco's UI, which I absolutely love, and the hue picker is one of many incredible features Pinco has added.

Pinco and his UI have definitely aided my color deficiency!!

BTW, if anyone has copies of (or are willing to make replacements) the missing pics (off-site links that have died) in the rare colors/dyes guide on Craftsman's Data Chest ( http://vboards.stratics.com/craftsm...elated-essays-updated-22-february-2012-a.html ), please submit them so we can get the guide back whole.

I'm also looking for people to create entries for the special dyes introduced since the original version of the guide was done.

A question that has always been in my mind is.

I wonder if people with colorblindness as you have, if you actually percieve the whole color range that normally-sighted people can, but it ends up spread over the wavelength in a different way. In other words, I wonder how much of color vision is wired into your brain vs. from your eyes.

But look at this. There could be a cure coming for your condition.

Luckily they are dissimilar enough for me to see the difference in the color of the fruit. The second picture looks more green and less red.

I was unable to see any of the numbers in the tests on that page...that had some very cool stuff.

The meat comparison was also interesting I thought!

    Thanks for the follow up!!

Fascinating. I say that because, to me, the second picture looks less green, but more yellow. And I would not tend to describe the second picture as having less red, because it has no red at all. Red is a very different color from every other color in the 1st pic. It stands out like crazy. Like, if you see something red on the floor that's not supposed to be there, you'd be like, what's that??? but something yellow or brown is kinda like, just there.

What you said could be consistent with what these sites say, which is, that someone with your color perception is seeing yellows instead of green and red. Maybe we won't know for sure until that gene therapy gets done to a person who had this condition since birth.

If that gene therapy thing becomes available to people within your lifetime, I'd like to recommend getting it! Because the colors red and green are remarkable. Yellow is.... bleh. In fact, when we mix yellow into any other color, it has a habit of automatically becomes unattractive.

Green + Yellow can equal what we call "puke green". An unattractive color.

Red + Yellow can equal orange. Which is sometimes pretty but if you mix a little brown in and have it be a little dark, it's.... something you'd wonder if you should avoid stepping into.

Thank you for the advice, yeah, I should try that.

Just for the record, I am not colorblind, I merely made a joke that after comparing hundreds of colored items with slightly different hue I was beginning to see them all the same color. Hope I have not offended anyone, it was never my intention.
I am fortunate, my eyes are still good, despite years of computer use.

Apart from 'full blown' colour blindness, quite a lot of people have the same problem as me - my ability to differentiate between shades and colours is pretty poor, a big problem as a board game player since far too often the blue and green, or brown and purple, coloured pieces look pretty much the same to me!

I guess in some ways has proved a blessing in UO terms. I can easily slide into wanting to collect 'the set' of stuff, but when I can't really tell the difference between so many differently hued items, or cloth colours, even I realise it's not worth trying ;)

Hm! You must be like this:

(from Frequently Asked Question About Colorblindness )

I'm reading that as many as like 12% of guys have something like this.

But yeah any confusion between brown and purple means something's awry in there, the usual color vision won't see a similarity between those 2.

    @A Thought Elemental -

What must be odd for someone that does not have a color deficiency is to understand that what I see as "Red' is absolutely "Red" to me. When I am unable to tell between two colors (like Red and Green, particularly in low light and/or a distance with small lights) it is because both colors look "Red" or "Green"...not that one is "More Red"...more like my brain has learned that THAT particular shade is "Red", and my brain then associates that color (or lack thereof) with "Red" or "Blue".

It is equally odd to wonder what it would be like to switch eyeballs with someone and see if I would be "Color Blind" again, in that my brain has already been trained to see "Red" as much as my eyeballs will allow. I would also be very interested in the observations of what it would be like to truly see the world through the eyes of a color deficient person.

Likely I would become "Color Enhanced" after the gene treatment, if it was successful and that would be pretty cool indeed. Of course, I always wonder about side effects etc. Monkeys may see less of another color, perhaps, or there could be other side effects that could be worse than that, perhaps...maybe not.

Nonetheless...a great conversation, and some interesting scientific stuff!

yeah.... this thing "Red" is just a word. A color is a perception which could have whatever name assigned to it.

I hope that gene therapy becomes available, at least so that, from a purely selfish perspective, we get to hear the impressions of people who did not have full color vision and then gain it.

I've heard btw of people who are color-blind in just one eye. But it's hard to say that this type of perception tells us about people with the 2 eye thing.

Wow.. im slightly colorblind lol. I failed all of those "shapes and numbers in the dot-circles" Tests but like, the picture ones were fine, ish. Some of them looked really similiar tho lol.

lol hmm. I alsways had some noticable issues differentiating some purples from blues, but no other colors.... that i know of....
