    Particularly on Atlantic?

Let me start with a little story. As I’ve mentioned on this board, I started some characters on Atlantic a month or so ago (my main army is still on Legends). After a week or so on Atlantic, I had looted enough gold to place a tiny house near the Trammel Yew gate. I found out later that I was lucky even to find that small space.

Recently I decided it would be nice to find a place for a bigger house.

What a rude awakening I was in for.

I started playing the ant, running around looking at the signs on foundations, and marked an 18 x 18 west of Umbra that was starting to decay. Last night it fell (more like disappeared for a bare foundation).

I found out you have to wait an hour or two after a foundation falls before you can place a new one. So another guy and I sat there waiting and clicking (actually, after a while I quit clicking and told him he could have it, since he said he was trying to place a house for his 16-year-old daughter).

After some time, a new foundation suddenly appears and a guy pops out of hiding and says he has been there all the time, waiting for the placement. Turns out he’s an in-game professional realtor who stakes out lots that are decaying, places a new foundation and then sells them for some 150 million. He’s a pro at it, knows what he’s doing, and almost always wins.

I can’t complain about his mafia role-playing choice, but obviously, this totally rules out housing for new players. This comes at a time when more and more players are moving to Atlantic. And if we have a surge of new players, many of them will end up on Atlantic.

So where does this leave us? I noticed plenty of empty land that could be opened up for new housing. Would that help? Or would the professional realtors just grab those up too and try to sell them for 150 million each too? What do you think?

when i decided to branch out to ATL i placed a small mini tower with no problem.
was all i needed at the time.
then after a while i needed some more space, walked around and then placed a large tower.
2 friends wanted to expand to ATL so i went out and found one a large tower space and the other a 16x16 or 18x18 - big spot.

i dont see the problem with finding space on ATL.
you just need to do some leg work.

and where would you see this extra land opening up?

This was recently you found those open spaces?
Legwork - new players are supposed to spend the majority of their time as ants? Not much time left for earning those power scrolls then, is there?
As far as where to open space, most natural choice would be on the edges of where housing already exists. First suggestion would be extending the housing areas SW of luna - lots of valid spaces off limits for houses.
Second option would be the vast forested areas west of Minoc or around Britain, unless somebody has a major objection to a little urban sprawl. Does anybody really need all that room to hunt mongbats and headless?

My reply is...there is plenty of housing space. I personally know of at least 5 18x18 spots on Pacific. Instead of trying to crowd onto one server, spread out and maybe all servers would be able to have more active communities.

I had found a spot for a mini tower, a sandstone, and the small shop. If you're wanting to walk into a tower spot on Atl, I don't see that happening. And yes, in the past when I was trying to get a larger house there, I would be hidden and listen to the "professionals" as you call em plot and scheme about where to block, adn which ones were gonna toss down small houses just to take up the larger plot until later when they could drop em safely. If you're interested in one of the above, hollah.

@Origional Farimir - Thanks for your vote; I'm sure you had some good reasons for it.
@Uriah Heep - What I see the biggest demand for is spots for 18 x 18s that can be customized.
@Tomarke - Your point is valid. If you want space to place a house can customize, try a shard other than Atlantic. That may well be what happens when Atlantic gets simply too crowded.
Anyway, the consensus seems to be to leave things as they are for the time being. I get it.

There's plenty of land that is bare but non buildable. They could open that up if needed.

I play on Atlantic..and there is plenty of available land RIGHT NOW. There is no need for more land. Sure most of the land is for smaller houses, but everyone doesn't need an 18x18. Opening new land isn't going to stop the realtors from opening 20+ accounts and placing houses and selling them...

When I started UO in 2000, it was a much more populated game than it is today. Back then, you could not even find a single spot for a 7x7 on Atlantic. My first house on Atlantic was a 7x7 small marble workshop I purchased off another player for 3 million gold. Housing for new players is the friendliest it's ever been. A new player doesn't need a big house. Let them start small and move up eventually. It's how UO has always worked.
There is no need for new land right now.

you can usually find a max storage for affordable. im sure you can at least upgrade. 18by18 are overated, my house is 16 by 16 and its just fine. i lived out of 9by14s for years cause could find the plots. believe it or not ive only actually paid for one house on atlantic, the 16by16 i have. my first house was a stolen looted deed off some poor guy. even got lucky and placed my 18by18 i have now. Its competitive. jsut like anything in the game. but you do sometimes just get lucky.

all that aside, i dont think we "need" new land. but it would be nice. id be alot more likely to shell out 20bucks just for a new housing area with colorful majical trees or something alot sooner than a deco package.

Theres plenty of room even on atlantic for small towers/sandstone and villa sizes

the majority of average populated shards u can place 1818s or large towers without any fuss

on the quieter shards keeps and even castles are a doddle

Jesus when i started there was no 7x7 house spots on any shard....

Update: I found out I was able to resize my 8x12 to a 10 x 15 on the same spot near the Tram Yew gate. I'm happy now. OK, I admit I may be spoiled, coming from an 18 x 18 on Legends that amounts to one giant workshop.

Housing is UO's biggest moneymaker isn't it?

Then of course it should always be time for more moneymaking in UO.

The UO Housing Mafia on Atlantic will pay new and more sub fees to snatch up the best plots on any land masses newly opened to housing.

And if they don't then OMG, someone else will.

    Win win seems to me.

There is enough housing place but to many houses are paid for but not used. I believe we need a kind of refreshing back, so if you do not entre your house with a house owner or co-owner account for 4 weeks, your house will end up as a placing deed. You can now find a spot large enough for your old house. If you replace your old house design, all will be back to normal. else you will have to place a smaller house. A special moving crates will then be in the new house.. The special moving crates will give you 4 weeks to empty it before it drop the contest outside below the sign if no room for it in normal house moving crates.

I have seen to many unused houses block the land. People take several months, sometimes years break, but pay their account. This ghost houses hurt the player towns. I had seen castles on Siege not be used for years, that is very sad. There could live active players on the spots.

The placing deed will stay in your bank as long your account is paid. 8 weeks after you stop paying your account, your items will spawn as treasure chests with random spawn near the old place for the house. The chests it self will first spawn when someone start killing the spawn, could be a brigand spawn or orcs.

I'm sorry the OP is having a hard time. But I gotta think back in the day when houses didn't go for game gold. The smallest 5x5 went for like 80 bucks plus on ebay is some horrid location. I remember selling a mage tower for somewhere between 3 and 4 hundred. My first "house" was in Trinsic on Great Lakes, I placed a small boat on one of the little rivers in town lol. It got completely looted a couple times and I think it decayed one night. But at least I had a quiet place for a minute without getting snooped lol. All I can say is hang in there, it will happen.

For the love of the UO gods, I want invalid terrain DESTROYED, DECAPITATED, & BURIED. I would like to place a house on top of my large tower, on top of my keep roof, on top of my castle roof, wall to wall to wall making an enclosed courtyard again, over water, on top of trees, on top of hills.... it is not game breaking, so who really cares if we could do these things. Why did the powers that be have to ruin such marvelous wonders which have ever since & all but last decayed since the bygone days.

PS. I want improperly placed housing again, pretty please with blood on top *coughs* & multi shard housing (grandfathered) with some deceitful icing on top *winks at Messana*

I honestly think that as long as players are flocking to Atlantic to be on a busy shard, the housing space is always going to be harder to find there. And if you add more space there, even more players will come in from other shards to be on a busy shard if they can get a house. Any new space will soon be filled and then we have the same problem again. But the consequence is that other shards which struggle to attract and retain players are going to lose a few more. They'll grab a house on Atlantic and move to be nearer the action. So I don't think increasing Atlantic housing spaces is going to help anyone. I'm sick of seeing my shard looking emptier and emptier over time. What needs to happen is a more even distribution of the remaining players instead of everyone trying to fight for the same single shard. And limited housing on Atlantic is probably the one thing keeping some players on other shards. I know some are like me and their shard is "home" but others will move where the action is, *if* they can place a house.

Freja, I can only imagine the screaming if the game went back to refreshing houses. I seriously doubt the devs would ever do that, it would cost em way to many accounts. Lots and lots of what I see are just standing, paid for accts (I assume) and no one ever there. Doing this would create a sound like:

"OMG! I pay to keep this account open to hold a house, AND NOW YOU WANT ME TO ACTUALLY LOG IN AND PLAY!!!???!?"

I started on ATL four months ago.. placed a 10x14.. in two days of running around.. now I own two max sized.

There are plenty of spots. Try finding an idoc. People don't place them unless they are max most the time.

    Try fel.

If u need a larger one.. let me know next one i find ill gate you to. Do you have a preference on facet? how large is your current?

They would not lose the house, it would just end up in the bank until they start to play again as long the account is active

There are 20 shards atleast where 18x18's are extremely plentiful..I don't think we need any new housing..considering I have friends who IDOC and do nothing else on 6 shards..they average anywhere in between 20- 40 IDOCS a week..how frightening is that

I don't think the developers intended the housing system to be gamed by paying a one month subscription for 4 months of ownership. But maybe they did *shrugs*. But yes many of the buildings we see day to day are pretty storage units. I've spent a lot of time visiting various player run towns all over different shards. I can tell you for a fact that while they look very nice, many are absolute ghost towns without a living soul visiting them.

And as others have suggested, If they dropped because of a lack of active subscription people in game would probably be shocked at the low shard populations.

There are huge swaths of land in Malas with no real landmarks, no points of interest, no meaningful spawn, no nothing. Just big fields of grass with a magic "no housing" effect over it. This land should be opened for housing. There is literally no drawback to doing so. If your shard is empty it won't make any difference either way.

I was gone for almost four years, but I still paid for my accounts. As far as the game was concerned, I was the same as anyone who played all day. Right now, paid or not-paid is the only distinction to be made.

How is the game to decide if a house is being "used"? Because of account management problems today, and the occasional server revert, I don't want to refresh a house at least once every 10 days. Remember when server crashes were more common, and some of us were paranoid, refreshing houses every day just to be certain?

I disagree Freya. Auto-refresh was the trade-off we agreed to when they limited housing to one shard in Publish 16. It was a choice of either keep one house per shard or one house per account but that house would stay as long as you pay. There are time when I go weeks without logging in because I am very busy with work and don't have time to play nearly as much as I used to. But knowing all my years of hard work are secure as long as my subscription holds keeps me subscribed.

That's not good for UO if there really are that many idocs a week. Each idoc is a cancelled account...

Well little Johnny you can't keep playing UO unless you meet these requirements:

    1. You must play on this dead shard with me so I won't be lonely!

    2. You must have a teeny tiny house on a busy shard if you do leave me lonely.

    3. You must pay the UO Housing Mafia cash money on that busy shard if you want an 18 x 18 or better than teeny tiny house there.

    4. If you don't meet all the above requirements then UO isn't the game for you kthx bye.

Does this accurately sum up the nays?

So what happens if they open all that unused land in Malas and everyone opens up multiple accounts and fills that with 18x18's in one day? Do we have more posts asking for new land to be added within several months? Everyone in UO isn't entitlted to a large house that's just how it's always been.

    If it was I..
As I have suguested to set all houses to the castle lockdowns limit so the need for that bigger house would not be needed just for space.
It was shot down not only by the dev but fellow players who's answer was to stop being a cheap scate and open more accounts to place another house if more space was needed....

I also asked for them to make bod books count as 1 lock down that got the same answer... Instead of my tailor being able to carry all her bod books on her or her bug, she still needs 20 some vendors to hold them and still strip down to skivies to use a book to its fullest ...
And this is only one shard tailor mind you... Id need 2 castles to hold all my bods across shards!

oh well ...... try to give them a way to do something easy they would rater sit on it.

Logically worthless argument. I don't mean that as a flame, I mean the argument literally lacks logical merit. If they open up the empty land in Malas and it gets filled, then more people are happy because they have large houses, and the people who miss out are still no worse off than before. Ergo, a net gain in player happiness for essentially zero cost in developer resources.

Meanwhile, the argument in favor of leaving that land empty and useless is... what exactly?

Highly unlikely, as there has never been a 5x5 in UO. And whilst we had issues in the past, no need to revisit them based upon...."well, back when I.....".

Uhhh, ummm, heard of lag right? Forcing me to choose a laggier shard will only get a cancellation. Multiply that times X and what happens to UO then, I wonder? Nah, bad idea.

    Pretty much..good summary! +1

Good news though..if you cry and whine enough on Stratics and assemble a blue whining committee..the devs will listen.

If you cry it they will fold..

Upon asking Mesanna about housing space, she flat said no, then proceeded to say that instead, they need a way to deal with the inactive accounts. No mention of what that was, but did sound like they at least looking at something.

Well, 1...must be entitled, cause you've done got that land filled up with 18x18's by multiple account holders before its happened. I dont have the see the future skill. 2....everyone who pays the same as everyone else is most certainly entitled to whatever anyone else is entitled to. No one is entitled to a large house, but ALL of us are entitled to the opportunity to place one. Im sure thats what you meant, right?

Everyone is entitled to the ability to place a large house, and everyone has that ability when a house decays and land opens. But asking for devs to open more land when more land isn't needed is just silly. There is a bunch of open space, even on Atlantic to place a house. There is no need to further open up land.

I can see the logic of this argument. Well done.

And yet the actual argument in favor of leaving a bunch of land in Malas empty and unusable is...?

An even distribution? Yeah that's what we need to do, gut the only active shard left in the game so that a bunch of hasbeen shards can go from "really empty" all the way to "mostly empty".

I'm not forcing you to do anything.Rather than everyone try to all fit on one full shard, it makes more sense for those of us who are, for example European to use Europa rather than rush to Atlantic because it's more active than our home shard. And the same goes for the other players who abandoned their local shard in favour of Atlantic, adding to the pressure on the housing space. I'm not suggesting that players who are local to Atlantic should move to Europa etc as that would make absolutely no sense whatsoever :)

Sorry, but I don't view Atlantic as the most important shard in UO. All shards have history, community and value, whether some of you think they are "hasbeen" or not. Those players already on Atlantic are probably not going to leave if they have settled, so Atlantic will hardly empty overnight.

Atlantic is not the only choice for USA citizens, so in my eyes, if you choose the busiest US shard then its tuff that larger housing spots are not so easy to aquire,

this is a non starter, its more carebear talk....

UO was 100% times busier back when i started, we dealt with it then just fine, i got by for years in a 10x11 that i bought eventually after living in a friends house for a year give or take,

    sigh,

I see your point and raise you this:
While yes we have played in UO from day 1 using what we could get and live in what our funds and space we could find for a home to store our "junk". UO has not stayed the same as that time so long ago. Back then there was not as diverse a aray of item to collect for work in the game. Many times I have sited that just a crafter of old could manage with a 7x7... in this day and age with all the things needed by that same crafter has bloomed to a monster headache in storage.
WE didnt have bods, nor wood variaty of today not to mention all the additions of mats needed for modern crafting.
Think about it... the new items made for reforging and imbueing alone could fill a decient house with no room for any other item.
I sat back and looked at all the different things just my scribe needs to do books nd scrolls... thats alot of junk!
Then you got smith.......lets just say the new stuff is so much that you could fill a castle between smithing, tailoring, imbuing, carpentery, well you get the picture.
    Let's get real...
Many have told the Dev up the storage but they are not which makes this very moot.
I for one think Bonnie and the rest of the Dev will not budge on it.
And unless the ones with clout are willing to listen to reason your SOL.
We have givien them ways to cut down on our lockdown needs , for the most part they are trying to help... but in the ways where it might do some good ...not so much.
    Right now this is :bdh:
