Is it worth coming back??

I stopped playing UO right after AoS came out, looking to get back into it, but I'm wondering if it's worth it? I understand the player base has pretty much tanked on most shards...are there any that still have decent populations? I really love the classless skill system; that, and the player crafting system ( at least the old one). If UO is pretty much dead, does anyone know of any other games out there that can compare?

    - So, all I have to work with is this, your first 'return' post...

    Question 1:
Well you came back here, so Yes it probably is worth coming back to UO as well.

    Question 2:
Yes there are plenty of shards that have decent populations; although they may not be in the places you are used to seeing populated.

    Question 3:
Sure, every single other game out there can compare to UO... but I have yet to see many that can add up to what UO can offer.
Sure there are other MMO's that are more populated; and many more that are less populated.

Honestly, you have to be much more distinct with your questions if you want to see if UO can compare, when stacked up, to what you personally seek in a game.

  3. All your questions were answered above, but I will say, in my opinion, that nothing compares to UO. I been playing UO since 99, this game, [UO-R] was a birthday gift to me and today marks my 10th anniv, hard to believe that.

I am also looking into coming back.

Now, do you know what would get me back in a blink of an eye without any doubt ?

If I was sure that in the game there was no more scripting or duping possible, NONE, and a brand new server was created so that players could start from scratch ON AN EQUAL BASIS.

My dream has been for YEARS to be able to play Ultima Online measuring myself on an equal basis versus other players, NOT having to face players scripting, duping, using exploits a go-go and then claiming they were more succesfull in the game.

No thanks, if I cannot play a game where all players can play on a evened field, personally, I prefer not playing that game.

Come back to UO ? I am still debating that with myself, still undecided.

I am thinking of leaving. I left tram years ago and came to Siege to avoid lag.

Right now EA has made 8 of our towns unuseable by removing the GZ. This removes 6 of our 10 stables, heartwood, and the community collections.

They made it so instead of everyone having one blessed item - those who don't use weapons can have two by using an uber blessed spellbook (those who weren't here for the event need not apply).

They have told us by their faction changes that if you don't want to play in faction you might want to play elsewhere by giving faction players uber items.

I came to UO maybe 6 months before AoS, I haven't quit yet. Granted I can'y play as much as used to, due to real life reasons, but UO never ends with it's challenges.

Populations will always flucuate. People are human, and will get bored. Some will quit out of boredom, agravation, or financial reasons.....I've survived.

Other games can't compare....yes, you may get a graphics thrill off a newer game, but hitting a stone wall's easy to do.

Come back, UO's one of a kind, and far from dead. Remember, the posters here represent but a fraction that play UO.

Depends on your playstyle really. I mean whats the worse that happens. Get and pay 12.99 and you dont like it. Give it a try. If you are by chance starting back up on Sonoma I can hook ya up with some gear and some gold to help get ya going.

I think this is the exact nub ofthe problem.

Success in the game is something that we can only measure for ourselves.

The game is a sandpit in which people play many different games, for example trading, rares collecting, hunting, PvP, RP, taming, house design, growing plants, crafting, helping young...
Each person sets the standard by which they can claim to the only person that matters, that is themselves, that they have won UO.

The real winning is having fun. If you set yourself other goals, they are yours, and NOBODY else can claim to be more successful. You can't measure yourself against anybody else because we all start from somewhere different, and we are all heading in different directions.

That is true, I agree with all that but nonetheless, I cannot help feeling bothered to the highest extreme by thinking that some fellow players playing my same game may be taking short cuts as scripting, duping, exploiting bugs or similar. And I hate it.

I would love to play a game fair and square where all players start on an equal basis and keep playing that game on an equal basis but I am still looking for it.

That's my personal approach to playing a game for what it may be worth, sure, but I can't help it. I don't have fun or at least not all the fun I could have if I have feelings that someone among the other players I am playing with, might be scripting or duping or similar.

The simple thought really bothers me a whole lot.

I can say from xp that my return has been enjoyable in many ways and in some ways its not been. I left out about same time as you and just returned in Dec.08 I am taking my time on "jumping" right in all excited and bushy-tailed.

    You left for what purpose?
You need to review that question for yourself and see if it's worth it.

I can be honest and say I have seen a lot of changes that I don't like and I do like. I went back to my "starter" shard of Pacific..even though I left playing on Atlantic shard. Just depends on what your after..if your after old school play make a new char on Siege shard.

Just don't expect too much. You can though find some house plots very easy. Resources are very easy to get to. Just take your time in the new elven city and do some questing...yes I said questing in UO...:coco: Those will help out alot with obtaining passage of new areas of play and getting some top end gear and weapons. I can say after coming back to UO I was already burnt out on questing in other games, but here its not that bad..pull out the ole rune books, or find a library and fire up UOMAP.. I can tell you now don't waste yer time treasure hunting...the new "treasure" hunter is a player that sits and waits on houses to fall to the ground and collect those items...*shakes head*
Vendors are isolated to about three to four towns now. Oh..almost forgot if you was a "bank sitter" at Brit...there is no one there now to sit with but the crickets. Luna seems to be the place to be..like I said, this is xp from my recient return..so others may lay in on this.

Lets not forget mining...thats a real pain now..you can no longer just run around hitting those mining books you had then..the spawn rate and areas are tweaked down..I haven't attempted this yet and still need to learn more myself.

But don't let me scare you away...there are lots of people still playing new and old that are very helpful and like to see folks come back...the second day I came back some fella walked up to me and offered me 10 million in checks and said "Welcome Back old friend" so there is unitity amoung small numbers now. I say come give it a try SGT.

Hmmm, does that mean that I should reach the conclusion that it is simply not possible to have multiplayer games free of cheating ?

That is, my dream of playing a multiplayer game where all players can play on an equal basis and only have their skills make the difference, not cheats, is and will stay only a dream ?

If so, I think this thought depresses me...........

[no but expecting to compete day one with someone that has played 11, 12 years in a month is a pipe dream u loose in method and knowledge, even if older player, restarted a new account same day! Playing enjoying is best bet having what i have or others have at start would make game, boring to new player lack of challenge!!! Earning gold for suit, or castle or placing self puts happy feeling into game make a challenge.

If u do a quest get a pvp suit and a castle after that what is there to strive for!!!!!!!!!

    This is 100% true.

Also: If you spend all of your time in game constantly comparing yourself to and worrying about everyone else, you have basically found the only way to lose UO.

Well, I still have a hard time trying to impose to myself the thought that I have to accept the idea of playing games together with other players who may be cheating to advance faster and farther then myself........

While this may be inevitable, I would still appreciate if those who own and run the game (not just this game but all multiplayer games in general) did their best effort and put it as a #1 priority addressing the cheating in multiplayer games. even before adding new content.

Perhaps it cannot be eradicated, but at least, it can be made a damn serious issue and fought harshly and persistantly trying to at least, reduce the problem.

At least, that's what I would like........

Popps, in all seriousness, perhaps you should check out Warhammer Online. The WHO Player Code of Conduct is here: http://help.warhammeronline.com/cgi-bin/eawarhammer.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=20867. It contains quite a few items that might cause a bit of a stir if Mythic ever decided to implement similar rules in UO....

Also, read Mark Jacobs blog entry about bannings in WHO: http://onlinegamesareanichemarket.w...e-ho-off-the-servers-yo-a-banning-we-will-go/.

    Found the interview very interesting.

Personally, I have always been against mixing computer games with real money. That is, I disagree with buying and selling pixels for money. Not sure about accounts.

One of the reasons why I am against it, is that at least in theory money "could" work as an incentive for some to justify power gaming and, perhaps, some cheating to maximize real money profits.

Since I think that this can be detrimental to other players playing the game, that is why I am against it.

As in regards to Ultima Online, I would love a zero tolerance policy for UO.
I have always been against selling or buying UO pixels for real money from years back when I was playing.

That's my personal opinion, that is.

No one can truly tell you if it's worth it or not since people will like different things, whether it be PvP, PvM, or whatever else people do in this game. Since it seems to be on your mind then I think you should re-activate it to take a look around and see for yourself.

But since you are here asking, I think you will probably be checking it out again anyways :p

There's too much cheating in UO.

Until EA starts getting rid of all the dupers, scripters and PvP cheats, it's not worth giving them any money.

Why reward them for running a subpar product?

I would say its definitely worth coming back. Loads of fun to be had and lots of active shards even now.

At least come back and try it for a month to see how it feels but from what you've said, I think you will be hooked again before long.

This game is what YOU make of it. You decide which direction and what actions you will take when you log on. You want to avoid cheating, don't play with the cheaters. If you want to join a guild, sit and watch the interactions at the bank. You can gleam a lot about people by what is said at the bank. do reseach, look at the UO community web page for the shard you are on. check out character search too. Smaller guilds are more fun because you get to know you guildmates better. However small guilds can be clickie.

I would not say UO is dead. It is fairly active actually. I will say that if you plan to PVP you better plan to speed hack and get some other hacks out there if you plan to compete. You also need to run with at least 5 to 10 people or you will be continually ganked. PVP is pretty frustrating between the hacks and pets that fireball you two screens away. I love this game, but I am getting tempted to pull out.

    ...

I need to disagree, and quite some.

I would like to play a game free of cheating but for things that I have no control of I cannot.

I would like to be able to compete in PvP but given the outrageous prices that gear, armor, powerscrolls and so forth cost I have to limit my game play to PvE for who knows how long a time before I can save up some 100 millions for all that is needed to truly be competitive in PvP.

I would like not to have to spend endless time to gather resources which I need for my crafter but due to the random changing of locations I cannot.

Shall I need to continue ?

The game is NOT what I want to make of it, simply, because what I would like to make of it is out of my control and I CANNOT do anything about it.

That's at least how I personally see it.

Dammit popps, you are so full of it!

You don't need 100s of millions of gold to compete in PVP!

This is how gear is priced (rough estimate):

    FOR EXAMPLE:
    1 Sleeves, LRC, 2 High resists....100k-2 mil
    1 Sleeves, LRC, 2 High resists, 8 LMC....5-10mil
    1 Sleeves, LRC, 2 High resists, 8 LMC, MR 2.....10mil +

People that have been playing this game for YEARS will pay boatloads for PERFECT PIECES OF ARMOR THEY HAVE BEEN LOOKING TO UPGRADE FOR MAYBE YEARS. They don't even make their suits that much greater, just a little bit closer to PERFECTION.

Popps, get out there and actually scan the markets, look at vendors NOT JUST ON THE STEPS ON LUNA, ask crafters what kind of stuff they have got on sale. You can find gear if you go look for it. IT'S A MMO FOR GODS SAKE.

    /facepalm

    Hmmm....

Let's see what one may need.....

As for gear, Head, Sleeves, Gloves, Legs, Tunic and, if we include the 20 millions Crimson Cinture that's 6 pieces.

Let's say an average of what, 6 millions per high end piece plus the cinture we have 50 millions there, already.

Then we have a top notch pair of jewellery, say 5 millions for the pair ?

Weapons or advanced spellbooks ? Need a few to diversify, say 2 millions each and 5 of them ? We have another 10 millions.

Then we need the skills. The character will need to be able to play around with a few skills to be versatile so, an average of 6-8 skills need to be advanced to 120 CAP meaning, powerscrolls are needed.

Not mentioning 120 magery or Evaluate Intelligence which can cost some 15 millions, let's figure an average of 4 millions each ? We have for 6-8 skills to advance some 24-32 millions needed.

And then we also need a +25 stats scroll of course. Another 4 millions ?

But then a player wanting to seriously play PvP will also need at least a couple of Soulstones to be able to swap the skills needed for the tasks.
What is the current price for a Soulstone ? Ten millions for a token ?

Summing up the various costs we end up needing over 100 millions...........

Nah you don't need any of these things to compete.
Factions, which is the new PVP arena like it or not, will allow you to get all the gear you need, and you wont have to spend a single gold coin. Imagine that.....

I'm not going to give you a long winded response because you are too stubborn and it won't matter what I say. :blushing:

Well, Factions is surely cheaper PvP, no question.

But it does have its limitations, doesn't it ?? Some players may not exactly be thrilled to move a sigil back and forth all the time for their idea of fun PvP.

So, it is not for everyone.

I was referring to open land PvP which is the most open possible PvP.

I have been gone for 2 months. True story.
Still in faction, solo. My own guild. Zero punkte points. Nada.

Three days ago, I ventured out to some champ spawns. Found a solo factioneer, killed him. Now I have 8 punkte.
Now I'm rank 10. I geared up for only about 10k silver, or less.
Died a few times to factioneers. Went through statloss. Lost a few punkte.
Killed another factioneer solo. Now I'm at 13 punkte.

And I have no idea what a sigil looks like.

That's the point, "over a few years"..........

Thing is, that since you started playing at the same time as most other players, you advanced in UO together with others so, moreless, you were ALWAYS competitive because when others got a better piece you ALSO got a better piece and, therefore, over the years that you advanced you were ALWAYS able to play a competitive PvP.

But now, for anyone who starts in UO and wants to play open land PvP they cannot be competitive unless they either hunt for free for a whole lot of time to find by luck what they need (which can take an extesive amount of time) or they need to have a very large sum of gold to be able to buy what they need to be competitive.

  41. Arch Magus

No. I started in 2004. With nothing.

People gave me stuff. Like my first little house.

I joined a guild. We hunted and they taught me a lot about the game.

I finally learned PVP when I had sufficient skills (nearing GM skills that is to say). Would you believe that when I first started PVP'ing on my mage, he had over GM Tailoring, because I thought it would be nice to repair my own suit out on the field LOL.:D

And then over time, I acquired the knowledge, the goods, and the friends.
Friends to give discounts on gear, friends for knowledge, friends for goods, etc etc etc etcetcetcetcetcetcetcetcetc.....................................................

Dammit man, Im not going to tell you my whole UO life story.!! LOL

You don't need 100 mil to compete.

Actually, if you are a PvP'r, the new faction system and artifacts that the Devs have implemented since your absense is a great equalizer and will get you several awesome suit pieces on the cheap. It's a quickstart system. And they are perfectly replace-able. If you loose them, just buy it back from your faction vault with silver.

In fact, they give even better stats than the doom versions. The only limitation is they can be repaired only 5 times, thereafter you have to buy new ones again. But think about it - replaceable stuff means you don't have to be afraid to loose them and do not need to farm doom for months on end.

What items do you need? Crimmy? Yup, there's a better factions version. Mace and shield? Yup, there's a better factions version. Orny? Yup, there's a better factions version. Crystalline Ring? Yup, there's a better factions version.

You don't have to play for years now to get great stuff. As for runics, they've also changed the scale on how these work. Spined kits and DC hammers have a chance to give you 100% intensity properties. That'll cover up a couple of the pieces you are missing plus a semi decent weapon. Also, GM smithing and armslore gives a boost to resists and also free 40% DI to weapons.

Doom system has also been overhauled, there's now a point system like that in TOT. So no more having to do Doom for months and getting nothing to show for it. I average around 1 arty every alternate session, each session I do the gauntlet for about 2 hours.

Soulstones? It's a first year vet reward now.

Several arties from anti-virtue dungeons are very useful too. And costs at most 50k.

And there's the 9th anni heritage tokens (they gave these out to all chars, so you can buy them cheap, also around 50k) that allows you to choose any anniversary gifts from previous years - from blessed ancient samurai helms/leggings of ember to quiver of infinity/fountain of life.

And stealing sigils isn't the only way to get kill points. It's rather inefficient I'd say...

There's also the new champion replicas that gives you those uber event items like the lt sash.

A side effect of this is that more people are hunting champ spawns in fel too. So there's more PS around, with a dwindling market (hey, people only need to eat a 120 magery scroll once, unless they deleted a char by mistake). Increased supply in a smaller market = prices of PS will come down.

If you look at it, all these changes are geared towards making life easier for newcomers! It's not the grind you remember 2 years ago, seriously.

Just give it a try for a month and see for yourself.

    Oh yeah:

    Stop being so negative :D

So he gets all the gear and scrolls he needs to PvP.

He practices every day for months to hone his PvP skills.

    Guess what......he still loses.

Forgot to download a speeder program and the tree and field hacks.

UO PvP is crap thanks to all the cheaters and more improtantly EA's inability to do anything to stop people from cheating.

If you want honest human competition, you're much better off NOT PLAYING UO.

...why? I don't care if I choose to pay EA to play. Nor do I believe it's not worth paying EA to play despite the existence of hackers, dupers, and scripters. lmao

Funny. I've never downloaded a single "speeder program" or tree and fields hacks. I don't even have UO assist.

And I have no problem killing people in game.

I guess that makes me some kind of UO PVP Godhead Guru Messiah or something. :loser:

Seriously. You use cheating to cover your own inability to compete in UO pvp. It's ok.

    *pats head*
    *hands tissue*

QFT. People who complain about cheating in PvP probably went out on the field a few times maybe months or years ago, saw a person cheating or whom they thought to be cheating (the KR client's pathfinding can look like speeding to a 2D player) and gave up on Felucca completely. I see way more people cheating in online FPS games than I ever have in UO but I don't go on forums and whine at those developers to do something about it because to me that isn't helpful behaviour. Do people really think the devs don't realise that a minority use cheats and hacks in UO? Adding more posts on the pile for the same tired old arguments to run again and again and again helps nobody. In answer to the OP, yes, come back, UO is still #1 regardless of which path you take in the game :)

Yes, it is worth coming back.

The Devs are doing a good job.
The Ems are providing some events.
    The community is special.
    The character system is great.
    The pvp is unequal.

    problems:
    - current scripting, cheating... but it has been like this for more than a decade.
    - unless you join the established system... you wont go far... (google apartheid)

    Overall...
    HECK YEAH!

If you've been gone a long time your gonna find Siege to be the closest thing out there to what you remember. It is the only shard you can say it is what you make of it. If you want to whine and complain about UO dont bother we have enough of those players. However if you want to play the game based on the style of play you choose no one here will stop you and no matter how you decide to play you are part of a community. On other shards your a random nobody, on Siege everyone knows who you are. As a crafter (we dont have enough of em) your wares will ALWAYS sell. As a PvPer you can pick a fight just about anywhere with anyone. Expect some of the best PvPers left in the game, I have seen entire guilds come to battle us from prodo shards and promptly leave tails tucked between there legs. And if you like to PvM... well you dont have to worry about anyone bothering you for months on end for the most part. If you are ever interested drop me a PM and I would be more than happy to tell you about Siege.
