Is this considered cheating?

If a person is training a skill such as music. Holds down the repeat button with a match stick but does not leave the computer unattended, is that considered cheating?

A few of my good friends say it is. I say it is not because the person has not left the game unattended. All that was accomplished was a saved Carpole finger.

If a GM or Dev. would comment on this it would be appreciated.

Gms or Devs won't comment because this is impossible to prove. You could be mashing the key with your finger for all anyone knows.

It depends on whether it is attended or not, that is all.

It was attended as the post said.

I don't believe it is, personally.
You could draw a distinction between wedging the key, and holding it down yourself. But if you're attended, the result is the same.
Although, you could argue that a matchstick isn't UOpro...

Ultimately, though, if I'm watching a DVD on the other monitor, and holding down/wedging a key, the reslt is the same, and I'm attending to the game window (especially since the window has to be on the foreground).

Rule of thumb: if it bothers your conscience enough to ask, it's likely dangerously close to the line.

If they really want to, they can look at the timing of inputs and get a pretty good clue as to which people are impossibly fast and consistent at hitting repeat. Most likely they will check if you can respond to a question to check if you are there.

I do note that from time to time people have come on to vent about being banned because they forgot to unstick a key when going to the bathroom. I think it's an inevitability that if you use a stuck-key method of training, eventually you will get sloppy and leave yourself unattended.

As long as you are attending, all is well. All you have to be able to do is prove to a GM that you are actually at the control.

Otherwise, how would you expect ANYONE to stay sane while fishing?

It's never happened to me, but I'd pretend to speak Japanese to get them off my back. And I doubt anyone has only been unattended for the 1-5 mins in the bathroom to find themselves paged upon and banned in such a short time. That was their excuse.

Before I got multiple monitors and back when Sea serps were quite a bit more powerful than they are now, I more than once tabbed back to grey-scale due to fishing up a serpent and not knowing it.

This is simple if u can respond to a gm if he shows up its not illegal. Which is why all the uber scripts type in hi or some stupid shti and the gm leaves.

IDK I use a roll of nickels but never unattended, then one time I got a gm called on me he wanted more than hi! Of course when you do respond you have to remove the *insert stuck item* to chat. But still he asked what i was doing and a few other questions that required a bit more thought. But that was just my experience. I know many others have gotten away with just a hi.

Not sure if everyone else agrees with me or not but... I do not feel that it is cheating as long as the person is still there...

When training a stationary skill it makes more sense to wedge the key down and watch a movie rather then sit there and stare at your character doing the same thing over and over and over and over and over and over.............

  13. dielock

    dielock Guest

I was not watching a movie or anything else. I stayed at the board the whole time. Just did not manually hold the key down. I could answer anyone at anytime any question.
I did however get up to get a sandwich. But since the puter is in the same room, my eyes were never off the monitor. But that took less than a minute.

Like it's said as long as you can answer a gm whith any of there questions like what color is youre robe which i get alot of the times etc.. Then you are attended. No one can expect you to continue to look at the screen doing the same thing and I will continue what a previous person said over and over and over and over and over again. I see it as grounds for a lawsuit= UO gave me arthritis, carpal tunnel, Cause me to lose my sight, seizure, headaches ,etc insert type of disorder caused by constant repetitive task involving keys and a monitor because it requires me to not move from my arms, body or head from position. And you know what the people who bring that lawsuit might actually win. Plenty of less worthy lawsuits have being won. Robber suing the person they robbed etc..

I think most of the folks here are right. As long as you are there and attentive, there are no rules I know of that pertain to how you manage the keyboard.

I would like to point out that RoT is pretty friendly. If you are working the right thing, you know exactly when the gain will come. Some folks dislike RoT or do not understand it fully. *shrugs* I do not mean to take this off topic. The very system of skill gain on many skills can be down right harmful to some, if taken to the extreme. That is my beef.

But I cab see most of you agree with me.

As long as I attend it does not matter what I do with my keyboard.

If the person was in front of the computer when he was using the "matchstick" then its no harm,no foul. What it does is save the person from having a painful thumb and forefinger.

There is nothing remotely illegal about this. Remotely. This and illegal aren't even in the same room.

What is illegal: Doing it unattended. Doing it with an unapproved, 3rd party scripting program, attended or not.

What is legal: Macroing, attended, with legitimate key/mouse strokes, using the UO client or an approved 3rd part program such as UO Assist.

Probably to discourage those from "getting sloppy" and leaving the pc unattended. I agree with your previous post:

"Rule of thumb: if it bothers your conscience enough to ask, it's likely dangerously close to the line."

    Feels wrong.... is wrong.

Also Gaming keyboards or sidewinders etc.. are made for games. Kind of bad if EA put something up saying they ban the use of all hardware that is not made before 1997 from playing there games :)

    Where can I download UO:Matchstick? :D

I think if you're there, may as well just hold the key down yourself. Temporarily bind a 'last object' macro to your keypad Ins or Del key and mash away. Easier in 2D as in KR it seems that macros fire on key release.

    what you skilling?
why you have tu hold down a button permanently?
with KR you can setup nice long lasting 10times repeating macros
(atm on one of my computer i train tracking, works fine with KR)

I don't think a GM would be able to tell if you weighted a key down or you were holding it down with a finger, but I'm still not a fan of key weighting. I think the best way is to set a macro to do something say 10 times, then just hit the trigger key from time to time. Then you're not going to have a problem because you forgot you had the macro running and had to go answer the door etc. Also, it saves a bit of wear and tear on the keyboard, and having to retrieve lost match bits from the keyboard later.

Thing is this, if you feel you are going to get carpal tunnel syndrome from playing UO, stop playing for long periods of time! You'll only make it worse:lick:
Secondly, I guess if you are sitting there and a GM was trying to contact you, you really should have your journal up and be staring at the screen to answer them.

I guess this is where you'll say you need glasses cause your going to go blind!:gee:
Lastly what is the difference then when there are actual scriptors out there attended. Does that justify anything?

Poster I hope you have a great insurance plan for all your ailments :stretcher:

    Good Luck !

Why use a match stick? When I trained music I set it for the space bar and set the stapler on it or if you have a flat keyboar like on a laptop use a roll of dimes or something.

No, it's not cheating. You're perfectly in the clear. So long as you don't leave the computer and are able to respond to a GM when spoken to, there is nothing wrong with it. You say that you were there and able to respond, so you're fine :)

Yes you are totally legal. As long as you are there and you can respond, you are legal. And even if it wasnt, as long as you are there can answer the GMs how would they be able to prove that you were holding it down with the match stick and not your finger? They couldnt, just as they cant with scripters, as long as they are there and can answer a few questions the gms cant do anything. So you would be safe anyway. But yes, thats totally ok as long as you are there, like many other people mentioned.

Sad to agree with such a cynical view, but sure seems that way.

I personally don't even see what the big deal with macroing a skill is. Attended or otherwise it is still automating an action where manual operation was intended. I don't even care any more. The rate gains are fast with skills that should be hard, and slow with less useful skills. I macro all skills when I need them (with soulstones, VERY rarely) and attended or not I have never been bothered. 10 years ago I would have never considered macroing a skill, now.... Its all old hat and the destination is more important than making the same journey for the hundredth time.

I have to admit I'm a little surprised how comfortable people are with un-play.

(then again, maybe I shouldn't be - I've quickly adapted to KR's "make max" on the crafting menu)

If your not cheating your trying to hard, If you get caught your not trying hard enough.
