In other expansion-based games that you can 'win,' like EQ, when the final boss falls, most people stop playing. Guilds struggle to maintain a decent turnout.

So never 'winning' is actually a plus imo.

All old MMO's struggle, it's just a fact when the new shine has worn off people drift away.

  5. Why is a castle endgame?

What has WoW got to do with UO?

WOW does not compare to UO. WOW is a simple game anyone can play. UO takes patience, thought, understanding and some real intelligence to play.

End game will be when they turn off the lights.

Ultima Online has no endgame. UO is a virtual world, rather than a game, so you can no more “win” or “beat” UO than you could “win” or “beat” real life.

I’m not sure what you mean by “downfall”. How much do you continue to play your console games after you have “won”? Probably not as much as before I‘d wager and at some point you probably stop altogether and move on to some new game. So, logically, “winning” would seem to make you less likely to keep playing. With that in mind, the notion that people “cannot keep playing because they can never win” puzzles me as winning would seem to make you more likely to quit playing.

However, if one were able to “win”UO then UO would be much worse off because the “winners” would then probably stop playing making UO worse off from the standpoint of population and the revenue that it would generate for EA.

That is what makes UO - it is ongoing. Otherwise folks wouldn't play for 10 years. Even old timers don't know everything about the game.

It's always funny to see people who think they always have to "win" to enjoy a game. I "win" by enjoying myself, not finishing.
Something the game industry doesn't understand usually -- it's better to have a batch of games people want to play forever than a batch they play once to win and then never look at again.

If you mean seeing the credits at the end of UO, then yes, you can definitely win it I know people who have.

If you want a 'completion' feel, good vibes etc. Go down to one of the hard dungeons and kick the hell outta one of the big bosses.

I always feel good when I get a peerless or other champ done over and I'm still walking

Think its sheer amazement that I didnt die too much

UO cannot be "won," and shouldn't be....I have no idea how other games that have "endgames" survive.

UO is.....UO is, to use a cliche, what you want it to be.

You can be the "hero," but you don't have to. You can be just a guy. Furthermore, if you do want to be the "hero," you need to keep on being the hero. Time and time and time again.

There is no endgame, but there are great triumphs if you play well and play intensely.

And if you don't want to play intensely you don't have to. Hell, you don't even have to play well. You could play just to survive.

I know of one guy who literally only plays Saturday and Sunday mornings. He gathers reagents and gold from mid-level monsters like gargoyles. He's the archetype of the "normal guy making a paycheck to paycheck living" And UO supports that in a way it wouldn't if there was an end.

I believe what THP was trying to do was invoke some thought filled response.

It's true....many people don't like or understand games that have no "end game".

My brother-in-law for one does not understand our appeal to UO. His thoughts are to beat the game and you win. He's tried UO and just could understand that UO is more, as it was already put, a virtual world that is continuous.

UO gives something that most other games don't....the ability to set you own goals and achieve them within you own amount of time and game play, with the bonus of content added for a change in pace. Old timers like this self pace, where as many newer players or players that have come and gone did not care for they failed to see the challenges that a virtual world can offer or perhaps they did see and it was simply not their play style.

Is UO dying because of those facts? I personally don't think so. For the 8 years my husband and I have played this game, there have been doom sayers, the end of UO was supposed to happen upon the release of many other games, yet still, here we all are. Subscriptions have tumbled yes and then risen never quite as much as it did before. But it has always been my observation that many UO players that leave to try the newest and latest, often come back. Because they crave the openness UO offers.

There is no endgame for UO, aside from shutting down the servers. You can be whoever or whatever you want. Even a jerk. Thats the beauty and simplicity of UO. Play as much as you want or as little as you want. What matters most is that you enjoy your time playing.

    Just my 2 cents.

Long live UO and we will be here until they turn off the servers.

UO will never be won because you cant, started as a social test, it grew into what many of us love today. No one and i mean NO one can possibily say they have done every last thing in UO. Try exploring without recalls for a week. Ditch the mounts. Take the road less travelled people! Ever been to the caves under Bucs Den? their is so much more than slash, slash, heal, kill, loot in this game. Try RP for something different

This reminds me of the many times i have been playing this game and people have asked "You didn't finish that game yet?" Then i explain to them that there is no real end to this game and blah blah blah.

Point is, there is no real end to any MMO. You play and level so you can play and level. Your quests and playing style changes as you level and if you get bored or reach the highest level you can always try a different class or toon.

I had a castle after a year, before I started PvPing, before I made my first 100mil.

Getting a castle is nowhere near an endgame. Hell I ended up giving like 10 away from idoc placement.

    WoW is a terrible game.

If you want to see the end credits try playing a single player game...

If you want to win a game, play a regular computer game.

MMORPGs are not about winning. Even WoW isn't (or shouldn't be). MMORPGs are about community, adventure and consistency. UO didn't fail for 10 years, because you still can do new things in this game. Other MMORPGs failed (EQ, AO) because one day you reached a level where the game became boring.

YOU DONT SEEM TO GRASP MY QUESTION AT ALL??

My son once said ''Havent u finished that game yet, u have played it for absolute ages, '' to which i replied ''u can never finish this game- its endless!! ''.....looking at me bemused he retorted ''so whats the point?''

Iam more than happy with UO to me its better than any game i have finished on consoles..and i have finished many of them ...Hell man i have finished games in money munching Arcades!!

The Point of the Post !!....
IMO Casual gamers are often put off UO when the start it, when they realize it cannot be beaten EVER!! so return to something a little easier to play...I also think the training curve puts a lot of new casual players off too..its very hard to jump in the first few weeks and hold your own even with a ogre, never mind a full laden top end artifact and reward pvper!!

And u are right!!! owning a castle is not end game...because i too have known people leave there home shard to start a very quite shard, just so they can place or buy a very cheap castle...

There can be no end game UO, it cannot be beaten..LOL

AGAIN that was not the question of the post...

IMO new casual gamers that try UO can be put off by the fact it cannot be finished and by the steep training curve to be able to compete with the better monsters and pvpers..

UO isn't a game, it's a world. You don't win it, you live in it. An alternative universe, an escape from reality. A place where you can go when the pressures and problems of RL become more than you can cope with. I truely believe UO saved my husband from slipping into clinical depression when our RL fell apart.

I think THP should honor us with the name of one solo game that you can win that people have been playing for 10 years, everyday or near.

Then the question is : Just a thought... Are solo games won then left because there's nothing to do afterwards?

    ;)

    That's wrong.
There are different goals in UO and in all MMORPGs. It's just not a big monster to beat to see the end credits.

WOW is similar to UO on that point, it can't be beaten. Yet millions of players jumped in. For most of them, it was the first MMORPG, the first time there was no end to the game. Funny how such a game with no end sells millions of copies.
Oh and do The Sims 1 & 2 have an end?

Now for the training curve, it's partially true that it drives some players away. But that's a totally different debate.

No, it's perfectly acceptable by any new player who has a remote form of intelligence. You know what's the second most played MMORPG? Lineage 2. In PvP you're useless before reaching lvl 70, and an easy target before reaching lvl 76. Count one or two years to reach those levels if you're not a mad powergamer with a lot of time everyday. There's 85 levels. The XP you need from 1 to 76, you need the same from 76 to 80.
And you're talking about not beating an ogre the first weeks in UO? Which isn't even true.

You're questionning the nature of MMORPG and looking for an explanation for the problem of UO in particular? You're going nowhere.

people put off by a game with no endgame then UO isnt the right game for them, tell them to get a ps3 or something

mmpgs are meant to be continuous. Even in wow the "endgame" once beat, wait till next patch and they add in something tougher.

Its not meant to be beat. Its a virtual world.

    Elder Scrolls: Morrowind?
    in another 7-8 years...Oblivion?

I know many people who still play it the Elder Scrolls games long after beating them.

a few others that come to mind.

Shining Soul II...the drop rate on the monsters is so ******** that if you want that special set...it will take you years.

    Maybe Final Fantasty Tactics...
I have played Secret of Evermore, Dragon Force, Breath of Fire II, Suikoden II and a few other SNES/PS1 RPG's for a long time.

Believe it or not....there is some console RPG's that get alot of play.

Oh, and Diablo gets played long after its been beaten.

I "win" every time I beat a Dark Father or finish a Champ spawn. I "win" every time I finish a Peerless or fill a Val Hammer LBOD.

UO is a like a TV series. Every time you log in is like an episode. When you complete whatever task or adventure you set out to complete, you've ended another episode.

Here's another analogy....After you break par in Golf, does that mean you can't play Golf any more? Are you supposed to sell your clubs and move on to another game? No. You keep playing because you enjoy the game.

I don't think any of us will ever know how many people have tried out UO expecting to be able to "finish" it and eventually left in disgust when they found out it isn't set up to support that concept. If I were to run into someone playing or wanting to play UO who has that mindset, whether or not they are a "casual gamer," I would urge them to try a different game because otherwise they just might ending up playing UO a lot longer than they ever intended. :D

The point is to have fun and let go of problems and stress in RL, if you want an ingame end for you RP it for god sake, also little children dont inspire me to come up with ideas beyond my scope.

My point, Anybody ever play a pen and paper rp game.
I used to DM at Arcticon, we rp ends all the time but if I ran some credits and ripped up dudes char sheet---OOoooOo
