The merchant ships are an easy source of crafting material, but having three gunners tonight we decided to try taking on a pirate.

    • Sail up and start shooting it.
    • Shoot it down to where we can board it.
    • Kill orc crew, start killing red pirate with a billion health.
    • Pirate ship keeps shooting anyway.
    • Helplessly watch our ship get wrecked as we chip away at Captain Hitpoints.
    • Pirate ship keeps shooting, even off the far side where there are no cannons.
    • Captain finally dies.
    • Loot consists of one box of crap, instead of three, like merchants have.

What a complete waste of time.

The pirate ships we've scuttled have at least 2 boxes, sometimes 3, of ore, wood, cannon balls/cannon stuff.

I agree that the pirate ship should stop shooting once it's severely damaged, but with all the ore/wood you get as loot it's easy enough to fix it.

And you get high end ore/wood too...I think it's pretty fun actually.

Oh I agree about it stopping shooting.... I mean seriously with no one to man the cannons it should stop!

And I agree the loot from a pirate sucks... suppose that's why your supposed to bind him to a pole and sail forever in a day back to the seaport and turn him in... However the loot from that also sucks.... more than anything.... a light flame cannon ball is like a kick in the teeth... NO ONE uses light cannons. The stuff required to go pirate hunting is time consuming to make and expensive as all get out... The reward should be in-line with the expense but it's not.

As for fixing your ship certainly pays to use a crafter... that's all I can say about that. Also there are ways to take less damage like to board the pirate ship from the back... Or have someone stay behind on your ship as you fight Captain Hitpoints. This way they can sail a ways off screen and keep the ship safe while you finish killing the pirate...

Personally I prefer to just attack those "Smugglers who pretend to be reputable merchants!"..... They seem to carry a whole lot more loot. Though sometimes those Gargoyle smugglers can pack quite the whollup.

That would still make them less rewarding than the merchant ships that go down without a fight. But again, one box of crap was all we got.

Yup that was us. Next time we'll just hammer merchants and load up on free valorite and whatnot.

Yeah the merchants have more loot, don't shoot, and are actually worth doing.

Having a very tough time finding them! Where would you recomment? Their sailing routes are hard to locate!

I hunt them in the sea lanes either side of Moonglow, between Artic in the north and Sea Market in the South.

Try around the Tokuno Isles, the merchants are easier to find, less sea to search.

I enjoy hunting down and killing the pirate ships. To me it's not so much for the loot, but the fun in blowing up a ship, boarding it and killing the captain or taking him prisoner. While it does damage your ship, and it should, it's not that difficult to get it repaired (emergency) and 'limping" to a nearby island to fully repair it. I love the graphical changes from your damaged ship, to back to pristine. We normally do the quests in Tokuno since it's easy to find the pirates and it's not very far to sail back.

I have to ask. The merchants are blue can they only be attacked in Fel and killing them does it make you red? Tried pirates before with a tamer and his dragon. The damage his ship took and the cost of both repair supplies and attack supplies far out weighed the rewards. He was trying to get the orc ship deeds, I was just out to have fun.

You can leave them alive or chose to kill them in Tram or Fel and no you won't go red.

Personally I think the idea of the pirate hunting and merchant ships was an awesome addition to UO, unfortunately I think a significant part of its implementation was a cluster. The entire process to collect, craft and fire a cannon took extreme grind to a whole new level. As much as I liked the idea, it is actually one of the few activities I just won't participate in.

A wise old pirate hunter/tamer showed me the ropes quite some time ago. I imagine it still works well this way:

    1. Move in directly behind the ship and start firing that front cannon (it's the only cannon you'll have to use).
    2. Stay in position and keep firing until you can board (most of the crew will usually be dead by then, leaving only the captain alive).
    3. Board. Keep the captain busy while a friend loots the stuff and moves it to your ship.

Note: The captain has tons of hit points, yes, but he doesn't do much damage. It may go faster if you happen to be a tamer with a dragon. Also, if you do it this way (attacking from behind), your ship is unlikely to take damage.

I've scuttled and killed 100s of dreads. Their boxes do suck compared to merchants, which is silly because the sea port people are always reporting Black Eyed Bill sunk this ship or that ship, yet they never seem to loot those ships. And yes it's pretty ridiculous how the Dreads can still shoot their scuttled cannons. If they're positioned correctly, they'll shoot 2 of them at your ship, and of course his cannons do way more damage than yours does. It also takes about 3 minutes to kill a dread, if you do it right . :gee:

I believe, not sure, there may be a person in Zento that gives the pirate quest. No one mentioned here that when you get back to the seaport with a bound pirate there is a chance of getting a part of an orc ship deed. Eight of these pieces numbered 1-8 will get you a pirate ship. Their hit power is 150% stronger than the others.

What we do is have a crew and load all the cannons. Sail past and fire. turn around and blast away with the other side. We keep this up until their ship is dead in the water. Then we park our boat just behind their last cannon so ours wont get blown to bits. We have had to sail to land to do repairs. It takes a bit of practice but its fun. Granted they dont have the supply's the merchants have but its a challenge. Have fun.

Ellie is correct. You can pick up the quest at the Zento docks and return there for the reward. Zento is our Guild's home city so we do them there to keep our lands clear of the pesky pirates. I'll have to try Old Gypsy's method. We usually have a tamer and a few ranged dexxors when doing them since it's a fun guild hunt, but 2 players can easily take out a pirate ship.

This is true you can do the quest in Tokuno. Many of us have asked that they put one of those fellows in Jhelom at the Dock there. This would make doing it in Trammel or Fel just as appealing. But NO ONE wants to do the quest out of the Seamarket.... the thing is just TOO freaking far away. Taking the 10 min to sail all the way to the other side of Jhelom to find a Pirate and return is just too freaking far. Now if the Pirates spawned off the coast of Dagger Isle or something it might not be as horrible but they spawn way off the other side of Jhelom.... and no matter which way you sail it takes forever in a day to get there and back again.

And IMO from an RP standpoint since Jhelom's Trade and such would be the most effected by this problem it would only stand to reason that they would hire someone to do something about it.

Here is a project for all your Jhelom Governors to support... Pleading your case to your King. I personally would be in Favor of Yew entertaining the idea of adding such a thing to our new Dock.. but we aren't even part of the fishing quests.... so would make far more sense for Jhelom to do it.

I agree on the need for an NPC in the jhelom area as those are a pain. On a side note, I've also found that the npcs that spout out long and lat numbers are 9 times out of 10 either wrong, or too late. I thought it would be quicker to sail to those locations, but by the time I got there (not enough to make it viable) the dreads were long gone, or were never there in the first place. Anyone who does these enough has noticed how phantom ships will appear to spawn and then disappear. I think the server tags these as soon as they appear, but fails to delete them when they don't actually make it fully in. Yet the npcs still alert people.

Rune Beetle. Their Armor Corruption ability wreaks havoc on Dread Pirates. Especially if you have other people/pets attacking the Pirate as well.

Thanks guys and girls, I had no idea you could do the quest from Zento docks, you've opened up a whole new world for me. And I'm not a rookie either, evidently just a dumma**ed pirate hunter. Have done hundreds of pirates ships and had no idea could do from Zento. Gave up on returning the pirate to Sea Market long time ago because of the time thing and after I got all the ship parts I needed along with about 100 leftovers for guildmates etc. By the way I kill the pirate, don't ask me why, but I do it on my archer while i'm looting the ship after it's scuttled, until that time I do not even hit him, I take my bow off, waste of arrows and as stated he does minor damage unless he has a big ole heavy xbow but even then he seems to have lousy hit chance.

I have attached a photo of some of the pirate death certificates I have, yep, I'm a hoarder.

    Actually doing pirates now

    upload_2015-7-26_11-8-37.png

Yeah we got destroyed lol but as you can see there is a chest, a box and the hold...always on pirate ships there's 3.

True that merchants have more resources but they all have 3.

Heavy cannons can only shoot heavy cannon balls and light cannons can only shoot light cannon balls...same with grape shot and flame cannon balls. I guess the heavy ones hit harder, I've only ever used the heavy ones.

I was going to say that you got a light cannon which well... if you could smelt it for the ingots might be alright... but otherwise it's kinda just trash. No one uses them. Well except Poly when he's just getting rid of all the resources he's gotten from the ships. Using up 100's of light flame cannonballs etc...

The other thing is the half ton of food in there you pretty much aren't ever going to pick up or use since we haven't needed to eat for years. (Which IMO is silly.... and I wish they would bring that back)... Why have cooks and abundant food if no one ever needs to eat, and eating doesn't do anything for you, unless it's the fish pies.... which while nice idea is well... meh?

Light cannons take twice as many shots to scuttle a ship but only take one black powder to make each light powder charge instead of the four heavy powder charges take, makes scuttling merchants a lot cheaper on prodo where saltpeter on the vendors is expensive. Not a concern now since getting several King's Collections fortunately, but it was a significant cost savings in the early days of High Seas when the Devs kept the cannon supplies cost so high you'd go broke firing them and wouldn't do it much.

I've seen merchant ships with just two chests of loot on them since my return last December. A couple others have had three chests but pitiful loot in them, made orc ships look like rich targets in comparison.

    Might have been me when I still played UO, but I did do a video showing how to solo it on a non-combat character here;

Skip to 48 minutes or so for the fight if you dont need to know how to position yourself on the ship etc.

If I were the person on this video, I would sure use an orc ship for the extra damage and the conservation of ammo. 6 to 7 shots gives first stage damage, full scuttle at 15-16 shots using only one cannon.

The orc ship idea was a great introductory idea to help foster teamwork and guild events. You could still earn the pieces solo, but by doing it as a team you could trade with another and complete sets easier. After that, it's a matter of the white dye tub, I guess...and further, whether you feel it is justified to attack merchants to get "more loot." Much like those who want jewelry from Gypsies. Of course, there are those who may have wanted to do pirates until they earned all the certificates...but that, to me, is just too long a process for things that do not have much function other than decor.

Objectively, once you have an orc ship and the white dye tub, there's little reason to fight more pirates. You get the best ship and then your thought is, "what now?" And so the replay value of the content is a bit short sighted. That, and, I often would forget to refresh boats...so I ended up just docking my orc ship.

I would like to see some sort of a gold sink idea to help maintain boats...maybe the development of an NPC crew. There could be a more dedicated tillerman/captain, who could be paid gold to refresh the ship based on the cargo weight, and there could be npc sailors who could man the guns, providing unlimited ammo and fuses and such for the guns you provide (for a fee, of course). You'd still have to do the repairs, like any good landlord, but that would make things more interesting for me. Then again, there still wouldn't be a real reason to sail around. Maybe if you could gain titles for your player by killing off a set amount of pirates...that might be nice. Or a system by which to turn in certificates to earn points toward those titles. I'm not sure.

It's an interesting issue, because they don't want to clog up the ocean with boats, but then, having to play a refresh mini-game is not too fun. Eh. When it first came out, I had a lot of fun hunting with friends to get the orc ships. :)

Disagree totally, I have done hundreds of pirates and merchants and I always enjoy it, each hunt somehow turns out a bit different with different strategy needed, etc.

Wouldn't it be better, though, if we had some kind of system in place to track things objectively? A pirate-killing title points system, some kind of reputation reason not to kill merchants (maybe NPC shopkeepers should be less trustworthy of you)?

For those who remember killing Noble npcs for Power and Vanq weapons...running the risk of going gray, and being flaggable...or those who remember when karma could not be farmed back so easily, haha, and so when you opened someone's paperdoll, the reputation title meant something. If it was negative, they were likely a thief or a murderer. Post AOS, that all kind of went to hell (because of fundamental changes like the addition of necromancy, and how that affected all things). AOS used the existing karma system to explain necromancers and paladins, which was a half assed way--other than tithing--to track the significance of those choices.

I don't know. To me, using different strategies to kill a pirate could not last 100 iterations...I agree there is fun to be had, and I enjoy the content, but objectively, there is no continual system to pursue, which to me is short sighted. Something small like a title system, something bigger like reduced costs buying supplies from the docks if you kill pirates, something huge like a reputation reason not to kill merchants.

The merchants have at least as much loot, don't shoot at you, and are easy to find in huge numbers if you know the right spot. I routinely roll out and do 5 or 6 in a row in relatively short order and come back with thousands of high-end ingots/hides/etc.

By comparison the pirates are just buggy annoying low-loot wastes of time. Obstacles to steer around.
