Just wondering... what impression has the past week given you about the Devs?...

After quite a long silence both on the boards and in terms of action in publishes, patches, and other types of action, a lot of the playerbase seemed quite down on the Devs. Even I was quite antsy at the need to at least know that something was happening, and of course the Doom and Gloom crowd was there to throw in their "UO is on life support" into the mix.

So the question is:

What is your impression of the actions of the devs over the past week, and has it changed from the previous weeks of inaction?

They talk and some try something again at least.

Is not much they have going on, but then they may have a story somewhere maybe.....

At least they do something again.

I completely missed out on the one time only 5 minute event, so I am still feeling the game is lacking some live content, getting very stale, still wondering about the event arc beyond all comprehension(yea right).

I am looking forward to the cross shard Atlantic factions crazyness(if it ever happens) but that is player made , so the Devs = meh

My confidence is returning. I guess the truth is that we have a small game with a small group of devs that are being asked to perform miracles. Yes there are a lost of issues that need attending to, but I don't think UO has the finances or backing to bring in more devs, so the ones we have are probably asked to do more than would normally be asked of a dev. If this is true I guess I should also back off my negative comments for fear that the devs we have, who are probably working their butts off, may not be able to handle the pressure and quit, leaving us with another set of new devs and another time setback with regards to upkeep and development. I love this game and I just want what is best for it.

7. I'm extremely disappointed in Mythic thus far. Nothing really has changed except the name. It's still the same stuff going on as there has been the past few years. No information given, no real content coming, lots of empty words. We don't even know exactly how many people are working solely on UO anymore. Plus, with WHO coming out soon, where are their priorities going to lie? With a 10 year old broken down and busted game with little to no future, or a new game with new content and new player base? The only thing keeping UO alive anymore are people who are holding on to memories and nostalgia, people who are dead set on making what little rl money there is to make from those people from all the stock they have collected over 10 years, and the people who treat UO like a medieval Sims Online game.

So Mythic does what EA has done the past few years. They make small little updates which are made out to be earth shattering news, give everyone new pixels which are actually just renamed, re-hued old graphics to make them fluffy to all the pixel crack heads go nuts over them, blow up a house on each shard of someone who has been a long time known cheater as a scare tactic when nothing will be done again for another 2 years just like the last time...

If Mythic was truly interested in moving forward with this game, it would show. Major announcements would me made, patches would be coming out at least weekly for old problems which would be easy fixes, it would be like UO was a brand new game just released to public. And regardless of how many people think that a lot of the fixes take time to change in the code, there are a million small things that could be done at the same time. There would also be more involvement by the team other than the posting a few times a day on a forum.

We've seen very little interest by Mythic in any of these areas, and who can really blame them? Mythic has been working on WHO for how long now? Only to have EA thrust the responsibility on them to take care of a 10 year old busted and broken game that they probably don't want to deal with in the first place. The bottom line is that if UO is to survive, they need to give the game over to people who actually want to deal with it.

I would feel better if I knew expansion wise what was in store for the game. They apparently haven't gotten that far in their discussions to know what they are going to do yet. I'll reserve judgement until I hear that news.

I want to see something. UO cannot survive without expansions. I realize that many of the warrior here would like nothing more than to see nothing but bug fixes but I want updated content and I expect bug fixes. In short, I'd like to see some meaningful content and not some box an x-sharder is gonna drop a bag into and get a prize.

Well, to be honest, I have a pretty mixed opinion right now. [IMG]

Theres been good things recently:
All the Valentine's Day content.
The runic fixes (still needs more to make crafting really useful again [IMG])
Burning of scripter houses (like the runic fixes, needs to be taken MUCH farther)
And the new dragons are probably #1 on my list of good new things at the moment.

Now for the bad:
What happened to the "live event content" we were promised for Valentine's Day?
Crafting still needs fixing (would love to be able to pick what mods are on a weapon or piece of armor, however unlikely that is).
SCRIPTING. When is there going to be more than just a few mass bannings/item deletions every couple of years?
When are the hacks in pvp going to be stopped? Ghost cams at champ spawns? Speedhacks?

The new Dev team has done a few good things, but still a long way to go...

Also, they need to fix the directions in the Valentine's Day Scavenger Hunt. My book said to place the 5 items and the signed book in the bag, while it really needed the 5 items, signed book, and the checklist. I still won the rose on my shard, but it would have been nice to know how to do it in the first place instead of just getting lucky since there were 2 double submissions on my shard.

Edit: I completely forgot about Factions! There's so much they can do to fix Factions, not gonna get into a list here.

12. Well for saying they have a zero tolerance policy on cheating there sure seems to be alot of it going on. The house burning was little more than a ploy to make it seem as if they are doing something to maintain this game. The fact is they will do nothing to speedhackers. The sad part about that is they dont even need to code anything to at least reduce greatly the number of people speedhacking. But then again they would probably need more than an automated gm service for that.

And to answer my own question:

Personally, for me, it's good to see movement again, although it looks like the focus has changed (again).

The impression during the move wasn't good, and was cause for worry. No updates, little communication, and a LOT of speculation. None of which is good for the game.

Now I consider myself a fan of UO because I enjoy the game. That enjoyment has outlasted 10 years' worth of dev teams, some of which were markedly better than others. However, I also try and be a bit more balanced. While I give the devs the benefit of the doubt, I will voice my displeasure at a given change or a given situation.

By way of an example... I LIKE the KR client, however, as many who know my posts (and I'm sure the devs by now) know, I've sent in a TON of bugs and issues to be worked on with the client.

Anyway, as I was saying... what I see is a change in focus. To me it looks like they have started by setting sights on the economic model of UO and aggressively attacking the front end (the faucet). Initially it was the ore/lumber changes. Many people didn't like them, but they never really bothered me, I can adjust accordingly. But nothing clicked yet.

Then the Bag Of Sending. Now that one chapped me. Of course I have adapted to the change, but that doesn't mean I liked it.

Next has been the dragon buffing which affects leather as well as the smithing BOD change and the vendor commodity pricing changes.

When you put all of those together you see a common thread of trying to slow down the inflow of gold and resources into the game.

So far on the back end, they have removed one or more known scriptors, and loosened the smithing BOD system (this affects the back end because better color BOD pulls means more colored ingots get used up which removes them from the resource pool... with the randomization, that means less will be in the game as a whole).

This is an interesting start. Now the question becomes... what system will be considered next. Crafting... PvP... Factions... Item Properties...

There are a number of directions that can be taken.

The Valentines/Easter goodies are out, and it's good to see more content than just a goodie bag (that are now hoarded because earlier ones WEREN'T).

It's also nice to see a good update to the KR client.

So all in all, I'm happier than I was before this past week when even a tidbit of info was hungered for, and I'm ready to see what's next.

Does that mean that UO is perfect or that UO doesn't have any problems? Not in the least. But if this week is to become more of the norm, then things are trending in the right direction.

I'm easy to impress, but the little "daily status reports" have really given a warm and fuzzy feeling about the work going on behind the curtain. And as I see the attention being given all over the map, it also reminds me just how big the game is, how many systems there are that could use a touch of polish and how diverse the demands are on their time.

Yes things are happening - They must keep happening though !

I still dont understand why it is LEGAL for items to be sold/bought for RL money.
If it were forbidden:
Would it totally stop scripters ? No
Would it really hurt scripters ? Yes !

CCP (Eve-Online) have a really clever system:
It is ILLEGAL to sell/buy any item or ingame currency for RL cash BUT:

You can buy GTC and sell them for ingame currency (works over a 100% safe-scammfree system) - That way the RL cash goes to CCP whatever happens.
People who must buy ingame-currency can do it legally and safley.
People who play the game for "free" can do so by buying the GTC off the people buying the GTC in the firsthand.

AND

The illegal sale of ingame currency is curbed that way !!!

If I were EA I would give this system a thought....

I have no problem with people selling ingame items and gold for real money, but as I have stated more thoroughly elsewhere think that it should be done in a VERY controlled environment.

As we should well know, simply banning such sales NEVER stops them, therefore the BEST (IMO) method is a controlled environment in which buyers can safely buy and sellers are monitored accordingly.

17. My impression remained the same. I knew they had stuff under control.

The other issue I have thought about is that scripters are really costing EA money aswell:

Take for example people who like to mine/lumber/gather ressources to sell for a living - Sure there are many people who rather do that than kill monsters.
The game in its current state is impossible for people like that. Whats the point in gathering ressources and being forced to sell them for a price so low that you can compete with a script...
I only mine or lumber to get wood/metal I need - I wouldnt dream of doing it to sell to other people - Not with these prices...
It definatley also hurts the economy if you are able to buy ressources (scripted) in big masses...

One of the biggest reasons why I don't sell gold for real money is in your post right there. Scriptors have flooded the market so badly that the amount you would get from such sales would be a very small fraction of minimum wage (and MUCH worse for a normal player), so that it's simply not worth the effort... you'd almost do better picking up aluminum cans or copper wiring out of dumpsters than you would trying to farm gold or resources right now.

I think a HEALTHY (by healthy I mean prices higher than what they are now, but no, I don't know at which level) out of game market would show a healthy game in UO term terms of game economics, but there are still a lot of changes that have to be made before that can become a reality.

Belmarduk Guest

Also
The only real problem in Eve with scripting was macromining - All other things are too random to do safley.
I have no idea why and it still baffles me but it seems that there has been a big decrease in macrominers in Eve because certain ressource prices have skyrocketed over the last few months.
In Eve you can really make a living from mining - Not so much in UO [IMG]
What I am trying to say in the end it is allways bad if the trade doesnt ONLY stay IN the game - Asoon as it runs over out of game channels it is not good for the economy !

Yes the market must stabilise - The best system is a playerdriven market with certain "backup-saftey-nets" through npcs - The newest npc-vendor changes were a good move. Then we need more sinks - Many more...!
And less scripters hehe..Back to problem Nr 1...

Well, I was one of those saying "stop scripting" over and over. And then I was one of those that said "wow, you did good finally (with the burning houses), but then I realized it was really nothing more than the (20 billion gold removed Storyline) we all witnessed with Wilki. It was short lived. Hell, the scripter who's house was burned, just to show you how long it too, was one of the ones reported to Wilki back then. Anyway, runic changes...meh, gave it a shot, used a Barbed Kit with 120 Tailor/GM Arms Lore, and got a 2 prop item with crappy intensities, gave up. I still find myself logging in and just staring at the screen for a few minutes, and then logging out. One little scavenger hunt ( sorry but that's what it is regardless of what ever effort was put out) was just too much like any old EM event. I know I'm alone when I say I need some new content. I don't need new lands, we have plenty of land. I don't need new items, we have plenty of items. I need some new content. Good grief, turn on random overland spawn. Change the Escort prisoners into an actual mini event, instead of "help me help me, I"m held captive by these brigands, I"m not concerned for my life, just click on me and take me to (insert random town here). Just a little thing like that, tweaked a bit, and guess what you have? NEW CONTENT!!...out.

24. Well what there doing is a start in the right direction, But how long will it last.

It would be nice to see more love for the crafters. I think if we craft the better items in game it should help everyone out... But i have been wrong before..

This will be a deal breaker for me PVP.. Iam sooo tired of waiting for the PVP of this game to get some much needed love. I just want to fight all night sometimes..

Fix factions that would help. Give us back Chaos/ Order Guild Wars... Fix the bugs in PVP.. An give it a great story line please..

An there is just one more little thing hehe Stat Loss Give us blues a fighting chance to control our destiny in felucca... An i know Nobody wants it but we got to do something about it. I can only hope that someone comes up with something to fix the mess we are in with the mindless ganking of any an everyone that is not in there click (Group ) Guild or what ever...

An i know that is a heated subject. I will go get my flame suit on now...

All i ever ask for in any thing is fighting chance

I am bored very bored other than that? Well it's just UO we have all seen "dry" spots during the life of the game and I know eventually it will pick back up.

We are long long over due on a new expansion and I am not talking about SA.

I want a real expansion. 2 out of the 3 last expansions were not bad at all in my opinion. Sure so many people think AOS "killed UO" but the fact of the matter is it revolutionized it and set it on a modern path for the better.

ML did the very same but not as extreme.

Yes there are things I dislike about both of those expansions but all the things that I like far out weigh the few things I didn't care for.

I think what we need at this point is a full featured expansion that both KR and 2d can take FULL advantage of.

Scrap SA with the exception of the abyss dungeon. That to me would be the best idea for brining new life back into a boring game.

I WAS hopeful until I tried to open a trial account using that KR code they tell you to copy when you click on the KR link on UO.com.

Now I am wondering why I clicked OK when my computer warned me I was being directed to an unsecure site AFTER I entered my credit card info and I am wondering if someone in some 3rd world country has access to my card info because after I clicked OK and got sent to the unsecure site I got the message in red that the page was Invalid.

Ok I have done this before and got the invalid page message a the very last minute (don't recall if I was warned it was an unsecure site or not).

Point is, WHY OFFER A FREE KR CODE AND FREE TRIAL OF UO ON UO.COM IF IT DOESN'T WORK AND/OR IT MAKES PEOPLE THINK YOU ARE TRYING TO STEAL THEIR CREDIT CARD INFO?

MYTHIC ARE YOU ALLOWING OUR BANK ACCOUNTS TO BE HACKED WITH THIS FREE UO KR TRIAL ACCOUNT UNSECURE SITE CRAP?

YOU MAKE YOURSELVES LOOK LIKE A BUNCH OF BOOBS. CAN'T EVEN BE SURE A LINK YOU OFFER ON UO.COM IS SECURE OR IN WORKING ORDER.

HOW ABOUT TAKE THAT [censored] DOWN OR FIX IT SO IT ACTUALLY WORKS?

IS THIS HOW MYTHIC INTENDS TO SET UP FREE WARHAMMER TRIALS?

Good grief.

Ok I can live without the free trial but I can't handle outsiders thinking that UO is run by a bunch of incompetent nincompoops. (Even if it's the truth).

I get the feeling the focus is back on the game again.. there seems to be a drive to do things... not always in the order I would like... nor at the pace I would like... but it's early for a "new" crew... as they have recently gotten a bunch of new folk I'm sure. I do hope that we continue in the good direction.

A few things that urk me..... the regifting of last years xmas stuff. that was ugly.... Would like more input from the Devs on ideas.... There are some serious issues out there that are not getting much attention..... Scripting, bot's.... the "sweat shop" style bots that gather resources and flood the markets with them..... taking away from the community.... Dupers..... rampant sale of duped goods.... a consumer can hardly tell who to buy from anymore.... what is real and what is a dupe..... I'd like to not buy from dupers but..... how can we tell? I miss many things from the old times.... the return of difficult dragons has really lifted my spirits... I'm tired of UO becoming a Solo game..... I want a focus brought back to RP and the communities..... and interactions.... No one knows the lay of the land anymore.... people have forgotten much about the lands. I miss going to the smithy to get my armour repaired..... it's sad. I'd like to see more work towards making the game more learning friendly.... with the lack of GM support, the lack of councilors..... and Haven being pretty solo learning ..... and it lacks several skill trainers... There is so much to be fixed. Anyway those are some of my ramblings.

Personally, I think it's just a quick bump in activity to keep the natives from becoming too restless. That's my bet anyway, and having asked several questions here and in feedback forms on the Herald already and having got nothing like a complete answer...I see no real reason to think otherwise.

Both Draconi & Leurocian share the same tag here on the Forums, namely Lead Designer, and since Draconi stated they have different duties, that would seem to indicate they each lead different teams, but we really have no other info to support the notion that there's now a full production & development team working exclusively on UO.
Perhaps there is only one team working on both UO & DAoC now.

I suspect the majority of 'NEW' content we have seen, including the Magincia Invasion, was/is already in the can and had been for sometime, most likely part of the initial plan building up to the release of Stygian Abyss. That would go some way to explain why these events seemed to end with no final outcome...several unfinished scenarios, unable to have the original planned endings because the punchline, Stygian Abyss, was removed from the plot.
According to info I was told in a couple of PMs by a former and very well known and respected Developer, who only recently left the UO team, there's almost enough SA stuff already prepared for an expansion pack as it is, so I guess they can serve that up to us piece by piece for quite a while as 'New' content without requiring much of an extra investment.

Mini events like Valentine's Day are meaningless fun for a day or two I guess, but not exactly anything of enduring substance.

The fact is that most people will accept that all is well and as it should be in UO, development & support wise, whenever a Dev says anything at all. Somehow if a poster here has the VIP badge and _EAMythic next to their username, a lot of us accept without question that they automatically speak the truth, the whole truth and nothing but....blah, blah, blah. Historically, that view is not supported by the evidence, but is guaranteed to get a lot of plaudits and kudos from many fawning fans on these forums so why wouldn't EAMythic keep on serving it up, as long as we keep swallowing it?

I think the last couple of weeks have shown us that someone is behind the wheel. How many years has it been since we had a live event? It might not have gone as well as we'd hoped, but it was fun. The house burnings, the event, the stuffy's, news of more upcoming "epic" events, I think they are doing their best to show us that they do care about the game, and us as players.

31. I agree with your sentiments.

The new team is trying to make the game better, but I feel is most likely to understaffed.

This game's biggest weakness in "no new real content".

Without a real expansion this game will sink faster than a Saigon hooker

Not sure if we need new lands but we need a dynamic spawn system, that makes dungeon crawls fun again.

There are some, that would still play this game no matter what happens; there is just less of them now.

I said it before; this game needs a Enema.

It is a good start and I appreciate all the work they have done so far.

However, I remain largely skeptical. So far I have seen mostly bandaid solutions to the problems that plague Sosaria. I want a larger vision on,

a) Controlling cheating in game: Runic market is [still] 99.999% cornered by scripters and their fencers.

b) Providing meaningful live content: I was really hoping for dev teams to provide powerful tools for players to create and manage events. That is the only way to have a steady stream of events.

c) New content: PvP needs new fel ruleset land created with group PvP strategies kept in mind to infuse new life in the PvP community. This needs to be done without falling for the temptation of WoW inspired battlefield zones which would go against the core of UO PvP. Hugely successful housing concept needs to be extended to a more community driven concept where you allow creation of player-run towns, etc. This could go hand-in-hand with player-run event tools.

So, ya we need things with greater scope and focus than what we have gotten in past few years. No idea if dev team has the resources to do any of the above.

What other impression could people new to UO possibly be getting after they click on the KR link on UO.com and attempt to start up a KR trial account using the copy and paste code given in the link? After adding their personal and credit card information, they are then directed to an "unsecure site", and then they are told at the last second, after they do everything that they are asked to do, that the page is "Invalid", and that NO, they can not play UO after all.

After my most recent experience with the KR free trial link fiasco it's hard for me to imagine that EA is the slightest bit interested in acquiring any new subscribers to UO.

Why obviously I think that EA is trying to kill UO, like they have been for 10 years, and it is only our l33t ma63 Pvp 5K1lLz that KeEp U0 601n6!!!

What else would I think?

PS: I think that once they settled in and developed a rough game plan, they are getting to business, more-or-less like I expected them to.

I don't feel the devs should have to answer to anyone. Not on here of all places....this is just some crap website. Furthermore, I don't feel they should have to keep adding content just to shutup a bunch of players.

Yes, you pay to play, so do I, but....hey, if you're bored with UO, shut the pc off and go outside....then you wouldn't be so bored with looking at a game 24/7....or close to it.

That's the problem with alot of players, they sit in front of the pc, "it's my hobby"...."it's my thing"...."I'm a gamer".....well, tfs.....EA does not owe players anything, if anything players owe the monthly fee. You wanna quit, go for it.....go raise levels or something.

I stand behind the devs, and honestly, I'm sure they'd love to post a kiss my butt post on here. But, they need to eat too, so can't.

The doom & gloomers.....read a book.

Well in the last few weeks I've re-activated an account, and I've got to say I nearly bounced clean off my seat at the Luna fires. Draconi that was just utter class!

I love that we're not only seeing fixes to bugs, cheaters are clearly on the radar, and we're getting events. I'm not too demanding on the events myself, but I think it'll make a huge difference to UO if we see this blend of dev time continue. Much as I was very sad at the loss of some of the team before the relocation, I think this team could be the best in an awful long time.

Keep this up guys (and gals!) and we'll fully support a doubling of your wages next year [IMG]

I think this should be EA's new company slogan.

If it's true we might as well know it BEFORE we give them our money.

41. I'm happy so far. I'm particularly impressed that the publish had some big changes that seemed to have benefited, and not harmed the game.

Actually reading from Mike Carey: The Devil you know
I am at page 168 but it is a bit boring until now.
For people liking that stuff I think the Dresden files from Butcher are better

44. I dunno if I'd praise people for doing jobs at a level of adequecy that should have been occurring.

Wow, you're doing your job! Hooray! I guess in comparison to what it has been like it's a step in the right direction, but again, praising people for simply doing their job like they're supposed to do is kinda unnecessary in my book. While people doing their jobs as intended is appreciated, that is what you get paid to do.

So meh, good job I guess.

My impressions is that this is what should have been going along the whole time.

I'll be impressed if it last more than a month.

Until then, I just see this as another of their 'flash in the pan' to raise up hopes.

This happens every once in a while. Scripting and speedhacking go rampant, people complain about it for months on end til the devs finally do something about it. The vendor house on the northern road in Luna in pacific has been wellknown as a scripter house since basically AoS came out in 2003, and the devs didnt shut em down til 2008. How much money you think they made in the years before the devs burnt the house down?

Devs, if you want people to regain their trust in you: you need to follow up on this and be consistent. Not one big bust once every year. Im glad you guys finally did something about it, but theres alot more to be done. Next goal should be speedhacking IMO.

My impression of this season's devs is lower than it was before simply because I think their action with the house burnings was complete overkill in the name of making a big splash. I'm beginning to think more & more that this house burning thing did more harm than good.
_Why_ not simply ban the accounts and let the people renting vendors at those places retrieve their goods.
_Why_ not simply let the houses fall after banning the owners and allow those spots to become available.
I know the devs want to stand up there and shake a cautionary finger at us and say "Beware who you rent vendors from! Find out that persons reputation!" But weren't the devs and GMs giving us the answer for years of "we can't act, we don't know, we have no proof"?
So other than all the people who lost large amounts of goods, and the gold, resources and time that went with them, how long do we look at yet another clump of pitch-hued flaming debris in this game that served no purpose?

I like the Valentine's rewards. I think the stuffy distribution was a bit off and really, most of the box contents were just last year's. But it did beat this past Christmas.

From my perspective, I'm really liking the things I'm seeing. The really good thing is, we've got great people in key positions, as a matter of fact, all the leads are devs from before the move - well except for art - but he's a really great guy too and I think UO is lucky to have him.

With everything that's been going on, I've been amazed at how much the Dev team has been able to accomplish.

On that note, here's a video dedicated to UO ...
