KR Art for EC?

    I'm pretty sure the answer to this is no, but for anyone in the know, is there anyway to port KRs art/interface into the EC? the death of KR is the main reason I don't come back to the game.

    Dakkon I'm with you. I quit for 6 months because of them pulling the plug on UOKR.

    I'm glad I came back and am still playing but it's not the same. EC is more stable and has a better UI but I would take UOKR any day of the week over the EC.

    EC really looks bad in comparison and it's hard to grasp how a game can actually move backwards visually but for whatever reason it happened.

    There are still some forum members lobbying for UOKR graphics but I wouldn't hold my breath.:(

    make sure you apply the zoom fix as explained in a sticky in this forum, can improve image quality alot :)

    but reason for dumping kr textures was mainly due to an oproar that it didnt look familiar enough to the classic client.

    I never crashed in Kingdom Reborn I know some others had issues but you really should have played KR at 60 fps it was awesome. I doubt it will come back, I have zero luck with this game.

    It took me forever to get over the trammel/candy land design approach, so when I did decide to give the game another go it was only because of the new client Kingdom Reborn.

    I saw the screenies of SA client and I just couldn't believe they were downgrading the client, and all because a few people refuse to ever upgrade their pcs, I mean you don't even need a top of the line pc to play KR even at max settings, just something more recent than the 90's.

    I will never come back as long as KR is out of action, the SA client is terrible looking, then again the KR fans seem to be a small minority so we won't matter in the eyes of EA, and it looks like the new booster is going to be gobbled up by the masses as usual.

    KR always crashed for me across three computers. Crashed for buddies too.
    SA is stable. But thank goodness for the skin mods because that default gold color makes me want to rip out my cornea.

    Now if they started to work on the graphics and continue to enhance the EC, then we'd be in better shape.

    They won't work on the graphics, I think that was the point of the EC, lower the graphics from KR because a few dinosaurs refuse to keep up with the times. The people who are hung up on the CC are going to hold the rest of us that want to move on back.

    Which is completely hilarious for me, I was told a long time ago that I had to move on when the game design changed completely and eliminated my playstyle, it took me a long time to come around to it but then I do for the new client and all during KR the CC users just whined about how they hated it but the dev team didn't tell them to just move on.

    They should have just announced the CC was ending and taken the short term hit in subs. I mean how is the game ever going to move forward when it is stuck in the past?

    To me the EC is a huge downgrade from KR, but the worst part is you don't have a choice, they just say one day, hey sorry guys we ended your favorite client and hand you a dog turd that is a mix between CC and KR.

    I've been calling for an option for KR graphics ever since closed beta for the EC.

    It really has been a slap in the face to see just how far they DOWNGRADED the graphics from KR to the EC.

    Yes, KR had issues, but right now, I think the EC might have more fatal issues than KR most of which are made MANY times worse due to the current level of neglect the client has received.

    I have quite a few KR pictures and KR/EC comparisons posted and instead of posting them picswise (some are VERY large), I'll simply post the links for people's perusal below.

    One final thing... I stated near the end of KR that regardless of what people were saying at the time, there would be a time (within a year or two) that people would be looking back fondly and asking "what happened to these graphics". The same has happened with the Alpha builds as well as even the 3d graphics in some cases. Now it's happening with KR graphics just as I said.

    Maybe I'm strange (ok, so I'm strange)... but I LOVED when you could use the widescreen aspect (in native resolution, no UI stretching or using odd resolutions for the same effect).

    I just miss how smooth it played at max FPS, I just cannot abide the EC as it is, sadly I doubt the devs will care as it seems like us KR users were extreme minority.

    I just wish they would pick one client one way or another and say this is uo for better or worse.

    KR art was nice, but I fear we'll never see it again *sigh*

    But I for one would be a very happy camper already if they simply turned on the higher resolution models - at the very least for my own chars. They look horrible now :sad2:
     
  13. This is killing me. I was forgetting how good KR graphics were in comparison to what we're stuck with now, but clicking through your links quickly reminded me. This also put the scary thought in my head that they could pull the plug on the Enhanced Client just as easily and foolishly.

    Some items was good, but many of them are really bad...

    The fruit bowl on the black table was really crap...

    Dye tubs are horrible, the mining cart is an undefined object, the ingots are huge and many other items (not visible on these pictures) like trophy, many kind of armors and weapons were really made with feets....

    The things I really miss from old KR are:
    - Map automap stile customizable with icons
    - Spell particles effect (there are only few now and are in the most part invisible)

    The thing I will really like to see is a revamp of the game audio effects, like the footstep on different terrain with a sound that is not always the same and the chance to have a "playsound" commands for modding :p

    Dakkon I so agree with everything your saying. It's so sad the that game can be better than what it is today. We totally should have been given the option.

    @Pinco - I really don't understand what your talking about. It looks bad? 2D looks bad. UOKR graphics look great. You have to be a blind man not to notice the improvement. There are some items maybe a dozen that are drawn better in CC but overall UOKR graphics win....by a landslide.

    UOKR looks great! And for sure a hell of alot better than anything 2D or EC provides.

    I mean it's Night and Day. Your entitled to your opinion by all means and if your happy with the way things are stick to your Jurassic 2D Client.

    Myself and many others are not content with graphics dating back circa 1997.

    On top of that given the technology the current graphics aren't likely to attract new players in fact just the opposite. I have a friend who plays on the CC and just today he said to me "My friends would laugh at me if they saw me playing this game" and that "It took awhile to get past the graphics".

    This is not good for the game. Clearly something isn't right and progress needs to be made.

    @ Dermott - Thanks for the pics. Like a walk down memory lane. Great stuff. I can only hope and pray that one day we have an option turn on the toggle for Hi-Res Client or option to do something...anything other than the limited options we currently have now.

  20. KR criticism seems to come down to minor things like fruit bowls a lot. Who plays this game for fruit bowls? Do people get their guilds together on Saturday night and go on fruit bowl crawls? ;)

    They could have kept KR (the biggest and I would argue most necessary upgrade in the history of the game) and improved minor art issues like fruit bowls over time. The Classic Client has minor graphic issues (in comparison to the rest of the client) that need to be addressed, but CC supporters by and large look the other way when it comes to those, but harp on similar KR issues...

    ... like in the example you posted, the squirrel statue in CC barely looks like a squirrel, the bonzai plant in CC looks nothing like a bonzai plant, the painting on the wall in CC looks nothing like a painting, etc. but CC supporters don't use that as a reason to abandon the Classic Client.

    And I wouldn't even call it bad artwork. How much better could the artists do in the CC at such low resolution? At least with KR, while there was room for improvement, the canvas the artists worked with actually made it possible to make those improvements. And didn't what KR did well (like most monster models, spell effects, etc.) outweigh these minor issues anyway?

    porchcompare is a look at my cabin upper patio mianly done to show the difference between the plants and the fountain on my patio in KR and EC (at the time). The thing that REALLY bums me about the change is that now all the plants look tiny and wilted in the EC as in they are dying instead of lush, full and green the way they did in KR.

    The fountain and dye tubs really come down to a single question of "What is the (technical) proper perspective for these items vs what is the perspective most people are used to?".

    Yes KR artwork had issues. It was really about 75% of the way done. Mainly what it needed was further "clarification" work on some objects.

    By contrast, the EC needs the "clarification" work done on EVERYTHING because of how small everything is due to lack of resolution/scaling.

    HKC is right though in that Legacy Client supporters (ok, let's narrow this down some... the people who have hated EVERY client other than Legacy for no other reason than "it's not Legacy so I hate it") will bend like pretzels in order to work out their arguments. They will nitpick and post something that looks atrocious in a newer client (and ignore how bad it also looks in 2d (horse ear cutouts while riding other animals, neon, etc)), they'll use out of date images (i.e. KR beta images instead of later, clearer images), or try to lump UO and UOA as "The Classic Client" vs KR/EC on its own and demand features that aren't a part of UO, but a part of UOA.

    I'm not a supporter of the 2d client, seriously if you remove UOA, it became unplayable... and I was a supporter of Third Dawn client (many mobiles arts and spell effects was 1000000000 times better than 2d and EC).
    Still I didn't like KR arts and I didn't like 2d arts. Just 2D arts give more the idea of what is an item, KR arts won't...
    The KR arts to me looks likes made in plastiline and unrealistic... 2d arts are more "imperfect" and that give more the sense of reality (if made in high resolution would be better).

    So would it be worth it to campaign for this as an option? is there any chance the devs would go for it what do those in favor think?

    Is it just a matter of being more complicated then we think or would it be easy to add a toggle? I mean aren't we basically just talking about an increase in the resolution or is there more to it?

    Ya know I'm not sure... depends on if the artwork is still in the gamefiles or if it were stripped out. I think it's still in the UOP files as the War Axe sometimes comes up with the KR artwork instead of the Legacy (golf club) artwork.

    I'm pretty certain though that a toggle between the two art styles would probably be easier than choosing segments of KR artwork to use and then upgrading the Legacy artwork chosen to be retained to create a new "high-res" version.

    It's just one of the several aspects of the change from KR to the EC that STILL has me shaking my head.

    The Atlas system (custom waypoint icons and particle effects), crafting menu, and hiding Animal Lore behind the Generic Gump system being others.

    Yet for all of the stripping the KR UI in favor of the Legacy one, they left books (normal written ones, not spellbooks or runebooks) the way they were which makes them pretty incompatible with Legacy.
