Just part of a long history of bad perspective circular objects. I really don't understand why they cant see that the perspective does not match the world.

They'll be the same in the EC since the graphic set between 2d and EC are the same.

As for perspective, the planters are more "correct", but perspective in UO has always been a screwy thing. The camera angle to the world itself is about 45 degrees, but to character and creature models is closer to 20-30 degrees. Older Legacy artwork, the perspective is all over the place from an almost side-view on the dye tubs to not even adhering to perspective within itself (see: the fountain which the top bowl uses a different perspective than the bottom portion).

The planters follow what they were doing with the KR artwork in that they were trying to put the items in the more technically correct perspective.

Whether this is "right" or "wrong" is obviously in the eye of the beholder, but the planters are more "correct" in terms of perspective to the world itself.

I have to agree with Dermott...

Okay take a look at the display case...that looks *right* in terms of perspective correct?

Now...warning..I'm about to show off my amazing MS Paint skills :loser:

If you took the display case and made it round, like the planters...you'll notice (Or not cus I really suck at this) that the perspective on both is the same.

I think that because the planters are round, it gives the illusion of being a bit off perspective-wise.

GRIMM HELP ME OUT HER MAN! lol

But do you see it?? Maybe?

The perspective of a circle should be ovoid rather than a perfect circle.

    For example:

The perspective is a lot less noticeable in non round stuff, but clearly the concept of the original artist was a slightly off center perspective, which is very much evident in any round object that the game shipped with.

Perspective on edged things is harder to tell because of the diagonal orientation of the presentation, but if you look at walls and stuff it has the look of being just slightly shortened.

Either way, even if there is no off kilter perspective (and its all in my mind heh) as an artist for this game one would imagine that you would take what you make, then "photoshop" it into an in game setting to make sure that it looks correct. Clearly this is just not being done, or who ever it is that's making these items look this way simply thinks it looks better full on.

Personally I think the original art is the measuring stick. Its simple, beautifully done all around, and FEELS right in the world. That is the art style and perspective that should be emulated.

What really confuses me is the incident with the arcane circle art. The first arcane circle looked much like the ones we just recently got switched back to (on accident I think) which sports the terrible flat 100% perspective. Shortly after that art came out originally it was replaced with an infinitely better looking piece with an ovoid perspective that matches the original look of round objects, and could be put next to say, a pentagram, and look perfectly in place.

So SOMEONE must know that this perspective is off, and had it fixed. Yet ever since Samuri Empire we have been getting this off perspective on many (but not all!) objects.

    Its a puzzle.

The new "desk lamp" from the clean up is also off. It looks out of place. And it's not that the art is bad (although it is clearly not being created at the same resolution sadly) its just off in presentation.

Hmm. I'm not sure if you are asking if the display cases are in or out of perspective. I believe both are correct, but I don't have any tools to draw anything out at the moment. They both look correct to me though.

So before I go any further, I would like to say that in discussing UO perspective, I am not debating "right" and "wrong" perspectives, I am simply commenting on the perspective as it appears to be established. I will use the floor tiles as my "universal guide" since they are the things that truly define the perspective. If you look at the tiles, they are equilateral squares turned 45 degrees. This means that you can draw a perfect circle and it touch all 4 sides, or all 4 corners. So any object with a circular top will show as a perfect circle. This is technically accurate to the perspective as established in UO. You can also look at those housing tile blocks that take up an entire tile, the tops are the exact same shape and size as the bottom. This also shows that regardless of height, the circular perspective should hold true.

I will also add that just because a perspective is accurate, it might not always be the most visually appealing. The fountain is a perfect example. The original artists skewed the perspective of the fountain twice - once on the bottom basin, and a second time on the top basin. I think this was because the artist felt that this looked better aesthetically than if the fountain was more perspective "accurate". From my point of view, that was the right call.

I've had some really terrific art conversations over the last week, and this topic was amongst them. I look forward to hearing more alternate opinions on artwork and perspective!

    Cheers to all,
    -Grimm

Oh God, I did isometric-perspective technical drawing at university last semester, it was awful, and now THE MEMORIES ARE FLOODING BACK

    AAAAAHHHHHH

Edit: On a happier note, we're doing 3D-modelling this semester; the current module is rooms and environments, and I'm powering ahead of the class purely by flipping the model into isometric view and pretending that I'm building a UO house. So next time someone tells you that picking on UO art has no real-world benefit and is a waste of time, tell them that it's helping a uni student in Australia get through computing.

Do the planters do anything special or are they just a bigger plant growing pot?

GRIMM! MY HERO! Thank you SO much for coming in here!

What I was saying is that the angle for the display case and the angle (X,Y Axis) for the planter Appear to be the same...but since one is circular and one is rectangular they don't look the same and the circular objects are always a bit *skewed* as you so nicely put it.

My father taught first year perspective and a prestigious private art school in Chicago for 28 years, the fact that the planter is *round* yes bothers me BUT in correlation with the rest of the objects in the world which are already a bit *off*, for lack of a better term....they do fit quite nicely.

And, like I stated previously, they look MUCH better with plants in them, that's what they are for anyway, right? :)

Thanks for the replies. I'm glad I didn't go with any planters. I love the clock. The white dye tub is cool I suppose even though everybody has one now. I already had a display case, didn't know you can raise the sides until a few days ago... The mannequin is creepy, the tapestries are awesome. I have one deed left. I was gonna sell it, but I really think I'm going to get another tapestry. I saw 2 or 3 that looked really cool. Two of them together on the same wall will look nice.

    *meekly raises her hand*

    Dear GrimmOmen:

I got all the clocks last year. I love my clocks.

But alas, my spouse seems to have some issue
with these wonderous UO grandfather clocks.

Ye see sometimes I am playin UO before me rl spouse wakes up.

And the wonderous chimes of the grandfather clocks, ummmm
never were implemented with some way to either turn em ON/OFF
or at least turn the volume of their chime, down a bit.

So some times, I be playin at 0500 hours and my grandfather clocks
CHIME LOUDLY... whenever it is there in game time, to CHIME,
and I will hear a spouse shout ...

WOMAN, you are waking me up too early !! Turn down ye UO clocks !
I mean they just CHIME when they hit whatever game hour,
which they chimming about and um rl sleeping ones get a tad ticked off ! lol

I would not wish for our grandfather clocks to be silenced perma like, at all,
but um my husband would appreciate it
if there was some way for us players to turn their volume down a bit, at times,
while not neccessarily turning down the volume of UO itself
to where I can not hear UO sheep baa or cows moo ! :)

My UO homes are more or less the art of Noise anyhow
what with vet statues turned ON, and flocks of squakin parrots anyhow, but um no volume control on our chime, when its their times to chime
as rl sounding grandfather clocks. :)
Those clocks can wake up spouses, ya know !!

My sire sleepy one, sometimes also complains to me too, about cat statues and UO cow noises when he is sleeping still, but he can/has learned to live with it,
but when he hears, the clocks chime, it wakes him up, MORE.

One would not wish 40+ yrs of marriage:blushing:
to end over UO grandfather clocks chimming now, would one ? hehe ;)

IF ever there is a way to implement a 'volume switch' on our UO grandfather clocks, please whomever may be in charge of possibly creating that perk,
please let em know, some players' spouses would greatly appreciate it, since they sound so rl lifelike they DO wake up our spouses. :)

Now one may suggest we do NOT play UO then till our spouses do wake up.
On the other hand ya not gonna make 40 yrs. of marriage IGNORING your spouse
to play UO all the time, when they ARE awake either. :)
And playin UO till they DO wake up, is a bit quieter still
    & probably beats
running the vacumn cleaner, dishwasher, getting ones shelties to sing aloud,
or cranking up the volume on the tv or stereo, before they DO wake up !

    :)

Can the planters be used for actually growing plants from seeds or does one just set deco plants atop them?

The planters are strictly deco, but look very nice with plants in them.

That is an interesting idea though, make them like flower pots you can actually grow seeds in...that would be cool.

I have all 8 Virtue Tapestries on Chesapeake.
Claimed 4 on Siege and the 5th was given to me by a generous lady.
Ie only one chr. [per acct.] on Siege so I could only claim 4 there,
or I would have all 8 on Siege, too.

I was not sure what all they would look like either
so at first I only claimed one.

I liked it. Sooo I got more till I claimed as many as I could x 2 houses.

Nice thing about those too, if ya can't quite see what the Virtue tapestry is, when selecting it, no matter, if ya picked Valor and wanted Justice, once ya axe em to take em down, ya get to pick *again* whatever Virtue ya wanted till ya do get all 8. :)

And since they look so nice, almost autumny colors, they go great with the huge codex of Virtue on ye floor, bronze stone furny, the pretty SA snowflake type table deed in yew wood, few yew wood barstools around that yew snowflake table, and ya get a knight of round table look, then toss in a few blaze plants and ya got an entire floor done up in autumn hued Virtue tapestries :)
I now have two of my homes done up that way, on one floor per house. Toss in ye cornicopia on same floor it's also now ready for a Virtue Tapestry Thanksgiving.

I love the warm colors in the tapestries.

I put em up in post above after I posted it the first go round.

Just be very careful claiming those virtue tapestries this time of year..or ye may find your entire house goes yew wood hued, bronze stone or gold even coppery, blaze arcane circles, torches, yew wood colored SA lg. lanterns
and the lil tok flowery thingie w/ brown base with white flowers, and just about any golden, blazey, and dk. orange brownish flower combos ya can think of till suddenly, ya end up with more floors of *autumn hued* wonderment,
that will go beyond *halloween* and gawdy oranges
to a more subtle Thanksgiving Autumn hued everywhere in ye house.
    rolleyes:

Then come Christmas, ya have to take it all down, to put up every Virtue snow globe atop it's matching big green VIRTUE tile, makin everything green and white for Dec. :)
