Mage Weapon as a Thief

Discussion in 'UO Crime' started by Blacksheep001, Sep 4, 2009.

  1. I am still very new to the Thief, and I was wondering If someone could explain to me how having a Mage Weapon is supposed to be good for a Thief. I have heard people mention how having a Mage Weapon can be deadly as a Thief and i'm really curious about what you have to say.

Theif templates are so cramped with skills that are not damage related that it is almost impossible to kill a full pvp template, either dexxer or Mage. With just magery and eval(and a Mage weapon). You get healing, hiding when aggro within any range, and a defensive weapon skill. You won't have much meditation or very little. The other option would be weapon skill and tactics and possibly alchemy to add up to about the same level of both healing and defensive possibilities. While I seriously doubt you will be exactly deadly with magery you can get a decent mana dump that does a pretty large amount of damage. While your target is healing hopefully you can get away. Good luck

Magery comes in handy for gating, healing, curing, and some offensive actions. Pvp will probably not be an option for you, but it can assist in getting away. If you have a mage weapon in hand, then you have the hit chance of the equivlant weapon skill, which might disrupt some spell casting, and also the defense chance of the equivalent weapon skill. With no weapon skill and no weapon, you otherwise are going to get whacked on.

I have magery on my thief, but don't use a Mage Weapon. I've been running close to minimum skill + Items to get the template I want. By using a +15 steal ring and Bracelt set for +30, Burglar's Bandana for +10 (+40 total) and Shadow Dancer Leggings for +20 (+60 total) I've shaved enough skill points to take 100 in fencing, after keeping stealth down to 75 and snooping at 90. By doing this I carry a Dagger with High HCI, this works will with my poisoning, and I also get the advantage of Shadow Strike. I'm not out to Kill PvPer's But I do like the idea of being able to get away. For Bots I carry a Dread's Revenge and have my toon scrolled to 120, so I get that +20 Fencing Boost.

  5. Will tactics work with magery to increase weapon damage if i use a mage weapon?

    I think so, yeah.

My thief has both magery (only 93 will fit), 120 fencing, and 80 poison. Might be interesting to try a mage weapon and investing the fencing skill points in other skills. Hmm...

If you want to use it with poison, remember that you still need enough weapon skill to use the special move (70 or 90, depending on the special move). Besides, I don't think that any of the -0 mage weapon arties can be used with infectious strike, so you will need additional magery skill points on items to offset it.

The special move infectious strike has nothing to do weapon skill. It is based off you poisoning skill.

I have reread your statement 3 times and can't figure out what your trying to say. Could you please clarify

This is an interesting thread. I am training a ninja and don't enjoy it yet. Like previous poster said, I've invested in so many non-attack skills, that he's just no match to kill.
So mage weap -20 assasin spike should allow the infectious strike and how about shadow strike?
You do want +20 mage skill in order to counter the -20 on the weap (if you want to or need to).

Yes, it will work for infectious strike. The level of poison inflicted based on your poisoning skill. No tactics required. The same applies for shadow strike. No tactics needed, based off your stealth skill with a minimum of 80 required.

My guy using a mage weapon (also a ninja / thief). Is 120 magery and uses a a mage weapon -0. Some guys wear the crystalline ring (magery +20) and use a mage weapon -20.

Also, don't forget to equip your ninja with shurikens and darts. They really won't kill anyone but it will make your attacker concentrate on the poison for a second and that can be enough to get away.

Yes. But you cannot use any special move if you don't have 70 or 90 weapon skill (real, not jewelry) in the chosen weapon. At least that is what it used to be. By reading your following message however i gather that you are currently using infectious strike with a mage weapon WITHOUT having even 70 fencing. Can you confirm this? This would have a ton of impact on my template.

What I mean is that if you use a mage weapon -20 with 120 magery, you will be hitting with an effective weapon skill of only 100, which is pitiful for today standards. So you will need to wear jewelry to regain those 20 skill points in magery if you want to be fully effective.

My mistake. You need the real weapon skill for special moves. Just tried this on test center with a mage weapon -21, magery at 120 w/ crystalling ring and GM poisoning. It would not let me use infectious strike until I increased my fencing from 0 to 90 (was using a kryss).

I didn't try this with shadow strike but I would think it would follow the same pattern as above -> real weapon skill need.

In my haste to reply, I was discussing tactics not weapon skill. Guess I should check specifics before replying. (tactics is not needed for infectious strike, shadow strike and wrestling special moves) Real weapon skill is required.
