What tactics do you guys use against archers and other dexxers.

I find it as a caster almost impossible to beat a dexxer who can play even half decent. An Archer can hit me at 30-45 damage faster than I can cast a fireball, then remove curses and heal in 4 seconds an entire mana dump and thats if I even get a chance for an offensive attack because im being smashed with arrows. Being a 6x necro mage my spells on a 70 resist suit rarely hit for over 30, and thats a flamestrike which will 99% of the time be inturuppted. I have 65 DCI and 120 with my magery weapon and still get hit 90% of the time.

Dexers can run around like crazy while I have to stand in the same spot casting spells that do minimal damage. Is it just me or are casters extremely unbalanced for pvp? I joined uo after a big break and it sucks I cant compete on my favorite type of template.

Dexers seem OP with conc blow how it is. I went back to playing a parry mage and rarely have trouble with dexers.

Its hard..not impossible, when i play my dexxer (badly) i often get dropped by good mages. Altho saying that when i play my necro(again badly) i tend to get dropped by everyone.

It unfortunatly seems as tho mages have become a support char...fantastic in a group, healing-synching damage, but tend to be no where near as effective solo.

Nowadays having a mage that has the highest surviveablity is the way to go...parry/mage like Lynk said.

Other mage templates are effective... if you can get spells off.

hey ive got a question and this thread kinda made me wanna change my necro/.mage temp because im also having trouble with dexers. my original temp is

    120 mage
    120 eval
    120 SS
    120 necro
    120 med
    120 resist.

So im dropping necro and SS for wrestle and parry and gonna pimp a shield. now having wrestling can i still have the dci even if i just have 100.0 wrestle or is having dci+wrestle more effective if its 120? i hope that made sense lol.

It's true, as an archer, I dislike the parry mage a lot. When I was a parry mage (I went back to spellweaving), I loved fighting the dexxers. The thing is, if you are a parry mage, you have to be VERY good indeed to defeat a necro-mage in solo combat. You suddenly have 240 points (wrestle and parry) which are absolutely useless.

And for that reason, I rarely see any parry mages, and that's the reason that I dropped parry on my mage.

As for what is the best all around mage template? I have no idea. Luckily with soul stones, you can switch around relatively easily.

Instead of wrestle parry you could do 100 anat, wear the crystalline ring, and drop med to 70, and be a parry/scribe mage.

With faction arties it's pretty easy to get LMC/MR/DCI in your suit.

ive been hearing about people adding anatomy to their mage templates. does that just add on to more defense? and what farsight was saying. i was thinking. i really do use necro a whole lot when fighting. and being a stright mage will be kinda tough. i wouldnt know what spell combos to throw out lol. but i am willing to test this so tired of fizzling so much when fighting dexxers.

    100-magery
    120-eval
    70-med
    120-resist
    100-anat
    100scribe
    120parry

wait somin doesnt sound right. ohh yeah about the factions. i joined it last night. i havent played uo since 2006? so alot of things changed but i quickly adapted. i noticed with alot of factions they seem to be more of a gank fest. or like 7 stealth archers witing for you to pop from the gate at yew. im still debating if i wanna stick with it but we will see.

Two questions. 1) How do you divide your skill points with a Parry-Mage? If I remember correctly you need 80 dex to get the full effect of your parry skill. 2) I count 730 total skill points (not counting items) in Lynk's suggested template which Murderotica put into numbers . Which skill should be 10 points less? Thanks!

yeah i switched some skills around and here is what i had

    100 magery
    120 eval
    120 parry
    60 med
    100 anat
    120 resist
    100 scribe

being a stright mage is tough. but the defense was good the only trouble i had was the mana running out really fast. dont think i can do it ill just stick with the necro/mage and deal with the fizzles until i can improve the suit more but thanx for the help on the temp

well great i was just gonna get into the necro mage template even got my mage weapon with no -1 fc and dci 12 on it. everybody is saying how they get pwned by dexxer and archers. i myself play a dexxer. Is it worth it to pursue this template for pvp or should i drop resist and pick up sw and use my mage for strictly pvm and stick with my mage eating pvp dexxer?

Lynk -- sorry, I meant stat points, not skill points. With 80 dex required, how much str and int do you carry on this parry mage template?

Int right now is at 120, little bit more mana with stat inc items. Dex sits at 70, but I'll chug a greater agility when I fight dexers.

Str I don't recall, but I sit at 114 HP unblessed.

With the parry-mage template suggested, what do you carry? I assume a scrappers or invasion spellbook. What about the shield?

I was thinking about trying to run this with 69.9 magery at 4/6 FC/FCR. I could put the skill points elsewhere. I think the casting speed would rock. Mana would be managed by casting 4th circle spells primarily and LMC. The big question is whether I could heal enough. Maybe I would use those extra skill points for some Chiv.

    Turdnugget Guest

At 69.9 magery, your magery spells aren't 4/6 casting, it allows you to cast Chiv spells at that speed...Otherwise you'd see more people doing that.

It's a viable template going with 69.9 magery and using scrolls, but for spawning it's no good, you gotta carry lots of scrolls. Once you get looted, you gotta restock.

It's kind of interesting the FC/FCR caps for magery are coming up in several different threads. I am pretty sure the cap for Magery is 4/6 at 69.9 magery and below. It goes to 2/6 at 70.0 magery and up.

    Check out this thread: http://vboards.stratics.com/showthread.php?p=1176818#post1176818.

My proposed tweak to the parry-mage template completely hinges on the fact that I can cast 4/6 at 69.9 magery. If this isn't the case, I have to rework it.

    To Obsidian:

The Chiv FC cap changes at 70 magery, magery is always 2/6 capped.

I use the Faction folded steel, AOF, faction fey legs, and a 10 DCI HPR 2 shield. That puts me well over the DCI cap so HLD has no affect on me, also at 11 HPR.

    My stats I mentioned earlier.

I do not carry a book at all, a mage should always have a free hand for potions.

My SDI comes from crystalline, and MR/LMC/HPI comes from gloves/arms/gorget.

It's actually a pretty easy suit to put together.

As it stands now my parry mage is actually 120 wrestle, 60 necro, and gmish meditation. I haven't decided if I like having the EO/Painspike/CorpseSkin or the scribe sdi.

hey lynk how much damage do you get from EO/pain spike with having 60 necro?

Depends, JoAT is like 13-16. 40 SS is 16-18ish. From what I've noticed at least.

The two problems with melee vs magery is..

    1) Magery you have to stand still, melee doesn't especially archers
    2) Every spell I cast doesn't have a 40 to 50% change of doing extra damage like melee do.

That being said the top mages on my shard almost never lose to a dexxor 1 on 1 and most of them are straight 6x necro mages.

I would like to see spells circle 3 or less be able to be cast while moving or something like that.

Archers and regular dexers are VERY different. Either way you want at least 45 DCI, hopefully more to decrease the effects of HLD.

For archers, time your spells with their hits to avoid interuption. They swing way slower than single tile dexers, so its easier to time. If you have necro, try getting omen-paras to greater heal or get an explode-FS on them. Keep them cursed, if they apple just curse again, they have a 15 sec timer. The key is timing with archers, and its very possible to drop them if you do it right. Watch their bandaid timer. Try and poison right before you think the bandaid will hit, or time large combos right after they heal. The key is to time your spell dumps while they are unable to heal.

For regular dexers, run around to avoid their hits. Dont just stand still and try and cast combos, you will get waxed. Run to the side, get an explode up, etc. Movement is impotant. Just like archers, you gotta time damage and poison with their healing. Another good tactic is to drain their mana, because they won't have much. At the beginning of the fight go fully defensive, heal while their burn their mana on specials. After that, try and omen-mana vamp. This will hurt their offense and give you time to try and drop them.

PvP is about playing your opponent more than yourself. Adapt to him, don't go into a fight thinking about a certain combo you want to do. Find his patterns and exploit them.

Timing spells between archer shots only works if they're not using a magical shortbow with SSI. They'll hit you just as fast as a one tile dexer.

In a duel, a top mage will always lose to a top dexer, IMO. Open field, a mage will win if RNG is in his favor, but even then a good dexer is near impossible to beat.

My friend used a repeater with ssi/hci/hld/di/fireball on it and I could not for the life of me get a spell off. :\

    Talk about annoying!

For fast dexxers I like protection on so I can get my spells off.

If he's a hand weapon dexxer I like disarm, then mana dump. (did I mention he's a wrestle mage?) I also try to slow down his swing speed by casting a chain of mind blast (it lowers stamina and is a fast casting spell)

For defense you need 120 wrestle and 45 dci. A mage weapon will just get disarmed and leave you with 0 defense skill.

If you casted protection against any of my dexers I would kill you before you could cast exp/fs.
