Magery Spells need some love!

How many years has it been since Magery got any love?
We have so many really useless spells in our spell books that it is shamefull!

Here are some propositions:
1) Dispel Field - How about it actually does what it says? Oh wait it does, that whole one tile! Why thanks, I am so glad I casted that! Ideally a 6x6 area of effect would be sweet.
2) Wall of Stone - since we are on the field spells, why not make a wall of stone a semi permanent structure with hit points. Make the duration 3 minutes long (before it fades away), and give it 300hp's where you can break it to get through it!
3) Teleport - eek, if only it actually worked everywhere! Nope can't teleport there or there or there, ok you can teleport to that spot only.
4) Dispel - maybe have this work against Strangle? Corpse Skin?
5) Paralyze - How about if you resist it, it taps 5 points of stamina so the spell has some function? Figure all the people carrying trapped boxes are cheating anyways lol!
6) Telekinesis - this could be a wild spell if they allowed us to teleport another player against their will. Although I could see some abuse here! Create the NS and EW energy field and then Telekinesis a Mellee Warrior into the field lol!
Maybe allow mages to have a small chance to dismount with it. Maybe disarm?
How about force the opponent into walk mode? Lots of potential!

How about some new spells?
Blink - Random teleport 5 times (could be a nightmare for pvp against a warrior lol)
Stoneskin - absorbs a percentage of damage from mellee attacks
Slow - Forces enemy to walk!

Die - I push a key and all my enemies die (lol ) ok this was a joke!
But anyways there is so much potential and I feel mages need some love.

Ohh I just thought of another one: Ice - Casts a 8x8 sheet of ice so enemies running after the mage can't change direction easily without sliding !

I like your ideas about Dispel Fields and Dispell. I like stoneskin, but I think it would pretty much ruin dexers. Since they already have bloodoath. If you mixed teh two together it would be nasty.

And how about finally fixing first circle spells so when you scribe them they're synched with each other like the other 7 circles? By color and by direction /\/\/\/\. Hopefully you know what i'm talking about because it's really hard to explain in words! But if you scribe all 8 circles of spells, you know that the first circle ones are out of order/color from each other like /\//\\/\, etc.)

Nice ideas. The wall of stone won't work tho, unless you can dispel it. It's used a lot in pvp already.

I'd also like to see some changes/tweaks to the mage spells, along with fixing resist so that it reduces the damage from mage spells. For example, legendary resist = 60% chance for 50% damage reduction in direct damage spells from a caster having 120 Eval.

[/ QUOTE ] I think that's over-stating things quite a bit. OK, the mage spells might not have changed but there has been lots of other love with spellbook properties, artifacts, SC items, -0 mage weapons, talimans, elves, necro spells...

I would love to see mage "subclasses" introduced. After gaining to 110 or 115 real skill you could focus your magic to one of the 5 elements.

Fire Mage This subclass would focus on area effect magery for excelent crowd control with champ spawns and such.

Frost/Ice Mage This subclass of mage would focus on cold spells(which are woefully lacking in the basic mage book). The ability of this subclass would be to slow down the chase speed of your target.

Nox Mage This subclass would be made for stat and skill debuffs from the usual poisoning effects to blinding your target and lowering its chance to hit. This subclass could be a crowd control/area effect type mage.

Lightning/Energy Mage This subclass would be focused on damage dealt out to one target at a time. Even though there are plenty of energy type spells in the mage book already. There could be higher end spells that take alot of mana to cast and isn't effected by lower mana cost effects.

Earth/Physical Mage This would be the the "tank" subclass and stat buffing and healing would be this subclasses speciality.

Blink, stone skin, slow. Those sound like WoW magery spells. I thought you guys said WoW sucked.

Given the prices of magery powerscrolls and the number of guilds that have it as their number one skill if you look at the stats on uo.com, I'm not convinced it needs much love - it already has a greater diversity of uses than any other skill in the game.

Although some tinkering with the dispels sounds interesting, I would tend to wait on new spells until the next time a whole new school of magic enters the game.

I like these suggestions, but lets talk about some of the other truly useless spells.

Magic Untrap - has anyone every actually cast this spell? I would have also listed Magic Trap, but I play on Seige again and it has it's usefulness against thieves.

Summon Creature - good thought, and I think I actually used it to summon a horse once, but with EV, BS and much better summons, what is the point? Why not make it so you can choose from a list of animals and they stay with you until Dead or you log? You can then choose a horse, or pack of wolves, or Bears.

Mass Curse - for a short while had a use, to reveal hidden/invised people. I cannot remember the last time I saw it used, who wants to agro on a whole group all at once.

Summon Air/Fire/Water elemental - When is the last time anyone used these spells? It is predominantly Earth Ellies and EV's. Air/Fire/Water ellies take too many control slots and are dispelled far too easily. I know, I know, they cast magic, but so do pixies and Imps, and they each take one control slot. I am all for keeping these spells, but lets reduce them to 2 control slots each and make the spell viable again.

just my 2 gp

magic untrap - not often, but I have used it a few times.

Summon creature is great fun for playing "summoner's poker" (event host gives a list of 2-5 creatures and first person to successfully summon the set wins ... with 10 or so people, it's a lot more fun than it sounds)

Mass Curse - ok, I can't say I've ever found this useful in my travels.

Summon Air/Fire/Water elemental - I've used water elementals for fighting kraken (since they can chase the beast across the water), but I've yet to find a use for air or fire for anything more than a decoration.

15. I like the ideas for dispel and dispel field. Dispel field is basically worthless right now.
Teleport is easy to use, I think you just need to get used to how it works. It is absolutely awesome for navigating T2A.
Paralyze would be fixed by getting rid of trapped boxes. How exactly do you "open" a box when you are PARALYZED???

Blink doesnt seem very useful, especially if you cant do anything while you teleport. Stoneskin would make mages even harder to kill, there is already DCI to help against melee and they have good healing. Slow would be OP against a dexer.

Dam 25 years since AD&D, dam I am getting old!

But yeah that would be the place I would look for idea's on mages. Can't even come close to argue that AD&D has the most comprehensive lists of spells ever imagined!

Yeah that made me laugh!
Not sure how unbalanced that would make life for warriors if they were forced to have resist! Then again mages are forced to have a weapon skill or wrestle, so you do have a point!
