Malasian Invasion

Discussion in 'UHall' started by RavenWinterHawk, Dec 9, 2008.

  1. I know officially have 3 accounts from 7
    I left origin and sonoma.

I am only on 1 shard now.

    Why. Bordem.

Could we please get random events all over Malas. Set the minotaurs free. Add in all the NPC spawns including mage towers. Add in random items of ale and other pretty things. Anything. Explorability.

Factions and PvP arent going to save this game. (sure it will help)

    Exploration and adventure will.

Ive been playing 10 years. Never before has there been so little to do.

Yes I have soulstone frags filled.
    I can be anything.

Yes I am a GM merchant.
    I can buy anything

Yes I am able to kill players but die more often.
Without looting PvP is useless to me.
I see no point in PoWNIng people.

Im tired of instance events of the same old same old.

Come on come on bring on a better sandbox world.

The high seas, the lowest dungeon, the unused Malas.

    Raven

Hopefully the return of EM's will help a bit with that.
The lack of content is quite stifling for a vet I agree. =[

I have some good advice, it is what I do.

Shut down your last accounts and spend the money clubbing, buy a book and read it drinking coffee out every day.. Buy clothes, a new mobile phone, pay for a month at a gym and work out. Go watch 3 movies in a row with a ****-load of pop corn and candy!

Don't let your other half or your pet or your friends convince you to stay until SA is released at least. Been there done that, too many expansion launches and testing. And taking a break doesn't cut it after so long.

Wait for another game, one that will get you hooked. I'm waiting for that Cthulhu mythology MMO which is supposedly gonna be radically different and much like real life RPG Sessions.

Let's face it; UO 2 is not coming out and everything already available is repetitive rubbish piling up real fast, that includes Ultima Online now. And paying for that won't ever bring you UO 2. Darkfail is not UO 2 either obviously..

So if you're visiting Athens(bring a Riot Shield and a Gas Mask) the first couple of rounds are on me. UO is better as something to talk about over beer, remembering older days, rather than something you wanna be playing. Sure some of us are in it for the Community, and to them I say better to pop up for a cup of coffee and chat IRL or chat on MSN, same thing if that's all there is to it.

Frankly anyone that states on these forums they no longer play the game should be banned from the forums.

To Cliche #1 : It's basically because of two reasons. First off, I have spent a lot of time on this game and on these Forums and am inclined to discuss why I feel it has failed after already having voted with my Card. Also my final decision to close it all down came recently but even if it had come 1 year ago, old habbits die hard and it is my right to be here if I want to. Don't be an elitist, it's just Forums.

Hate the game? Because I say it's repetitive and turned into rubbish lately? Because I advise Raven not to listen to people telling him to stay for another Expansion Launch when he's been through it all too many times? Maybe I hate it. But this wasn't a hating post.. Just opinions. You could always not read them.

To Cliche #2 : Frankly, anyone saying what you just did should be banned too. If not for anything else, then for the fact that some of the people still check back to see if it's worth returning and this behaviour might drive them away. Go be an Ettin somewhere else.

    I have hobbies.
    This is one.
Probably will be replaced with another which rhymes with Clarkclall.

    However...
Dont equate critical review with disdain.

    I speak from 10 years.

The game lacks because focus left.

You dont need factions. You had order vs. chaos. Same dam thing. Failure to execute has left us harmed.

You had PvP now you have gentle PvP.

The above have nothing to do with explorability. Risk vs Reward.
Risk is not losing insurance money. Risk is not dieing to be rezzed and back in in 30 seconds.

Risk is a function of excitement. Exlporability is a function of adventure. You can have all kinds of risk levels with endless explorability. UO has lost it.

This loss of explorability will (dare I say it) be the end of UO if they dont fix it. The game is no longer a game that is a sandox. There are no footprints in the lands because we dont go anywhere. We recall.

Its what the hell is in publish 57. Damn I want it free. This is to hard. These gifts suck. I have to work to get it?

And as the above is a bit jaded... It really comes down to this... The game has set a tone of minimal effort for maximum or equal reward.

That is how UO lost the direction of UO.

    Asian Home-Invasion..

    =)

I havent played much more than an hour or so on weekends.. higher education and no more nightshift induced insomnia are the culprits. (i did my psych research paper on online gaming addiction)

Class is over for a month starting in one week. Whadya say you play Pacific? Ill give ya some stuff to do =). Or we can go on a crime-spree or somthing..

I dont recommend clubbing either.. unless you like yelling at the person standing 6 inches away from you so they can hear you.. some dude humping your leg trying to sell you X.. and oh so horrible music playing on repeat.. SAVE the money.. lol.

  11. Thanks
Im settled in atlantic. Xsharding picked my interest once. But thats gone too. Another demise of the game. Another lets make it easy to rule the game.

Clubbing... I agree. Over priced. Im to old a wise to think there is value in the "leg rubber".

I dont hate U0. But at some point we have to say "ah how many times are we going to bang our head against the same wall".

There are way to many good ideas here. Nothing is used.

    Let see...
Barbed kit script fiasco killed all amours.
Runic kit dupe fiascon made uber everthing.
    Xsharding dupe destroyed the economy.
Lack of gold sinks of significance continues to kill economy.
Lack of random spawns keeps the game freshly boring.
Lack of exploribility means we drool for the next patch for an event.
Insurance well... Killed Risk of any sort.

Lets see vendor changes... overly complicated. Take 3% of sale and 3% of price to put on vendor. %3 going on vendor and 3% coming out. Now you pay to put high price items on and dont have to pay to keep them there for buyers.

Factions and Chaos/Order. Dang simplify it to Factions: Order or Chaos.

    Fishing add in some stuff.
Treasure maps add in some stuff.
Stealing. Add in random stealables that can always be stolen. Weapons, armour, arties, or what have you. Whats this mentality you can only have 1 or the other.

We have 5 lands. Heres one. Turn T2A to a non insure ruled set. Why is it so hard to image, 5 REALMS with 5 rules. Beef up t2a with new items, explorabity, high risk, fun reward... Blah blah.

    Anway.
we will get some rocking xmas gifts.
we will get a turn in event that last for freaking every.
we will get events that are static and exploited. Did I mention the plethora of 25k tickets that were farmed endlessly.

What is wrong with saying the game will be hard and you all wont get everything.

    Were is the vision.

    Blah.

Oh I forgot. Brain move on repair deeds vs a secure repair window. Brilliant. Lazy.

    Nothing wears out. Silly.

Now on a positive note SA. Lets see what will happen. 25 quests. Satured in 2 weeks. New weapons and crafting. Saturated in a week.
Embuing. Love it. Not sure why I need it. We all run in mage leather or samuri plate. You dont need much to kill monsters. PvP is sterile.

I remember a time way back when. I was mining near minoc, all alone, when an orc popped out. Then another, and another, then some gazers. Before I knew it, there were 50 or more of them. I ran to my house and relogged to my swordsmen. Within 15 minutes there were 20 people there all fighting off the orcs and gazers. It was a blast, and from that day on, I always looked for some kind sneak attack. Never did see another one.

It would be great to have that kind of thing happen more often. Just some ramdon spawn, I dont need any kind of reward, just a good time. Something to look for, anything at all.

I also heard of an evil mage town appearing, one that spawned a blood tile, I never seen it myself. But many people have spoken of it. I would like to see something like that also. Very random spawns that pop up out of no where.

    Tom

  13. Exactly,

A random event. How long have I lived in the swamp only to see the same damn lizardmen pressed against my window attacking me while I decorate. BORING.

You'd think theyd set a trap for me by now.

The mage tower I saw once on Origin when it was new. I was attacked out of now where by mages. I knew that this was odd. I finished them off and searched and found the tower. I did get the blood tiles. 2. 1 I have. And one that decayed in my bank box. An old glitch.

This was very well said. As someone who is back for a "free trial nostalgia romp" in the game (I played from about a month after original launch till about a year after T2A/Tram & Fel --- I guess that works out to something like 4ish years of play or something, and then 5-6 years out of the game) I did find myself very nostalgic for UO many times while trying to play other games during the last several years, mostly MMORPG's would make me really miss this or that about UO. I'm not an MMORPG junkie -- in fact, I was happily without an MMORPG for the first three years after I quit UO (in a considerable amount of disgust at how they were rapidly adding all kinds of new stuff that killed the old balance of the game and turned it more into what WOW was like from the beginning, a never ending subcription-payment recipe of grinding or redoing your character to keep up with the latest patch changes).

I tried WOW but the totally superficial nature of well... everything in that game made me nostalgic for UO. In WOW the PvM is much more "directed", but there's also no "point" to PvM unless you're questing or farming. The PvP is also more "directed" but really just a reward program for people who've played the game the most or are unemployed IRL and have the time to farm the best gear. The community while much larger than UO's has never, ever had a reason to be as close, and certainly no one ever even bothered to "get into the spirit of things" like we old UO'ers did (I would not say we were all hardcore RP'ers, but we did get into the spirit of things... not hang around the bank talking about rap and how we're gonna max such and such skill so we can go pwnz0r some n00bs.) I think because in WOW, 99% of the game can be done basically by yourself as a single player online game. It's just that 1% of hardcore elite raiding or PvP'ing at the end that requires you to suddenly work with groups of people, and even then, it's more like a collection of sociopaths than it is a sense of community --- you hear horror stories all the time about people being cut or kicked out of guilds because they couldn't make a scheduled raid or because the guildmaster's girlfriend wanted your slot in the raid roster.

In UO on the other hand the game well.... let's be honest, it's been unfinished in a lot of ways since the beginning. You were not "directed" to go to dungeons nor even really told where they were, or given a reason to go. And there was little/no quest system to speak of. Maybe that was by design. Whether by design or not though it forced us to "make our own adventure" so to speak, and you needed community for that. The people you ran into at the provisioner, bank or healer in the town that was your "hometown" tended to become those people you started talking with and organizing hunts, grinds, or exploration with. You probably bought your first house or joined your first guild with those people you randomly met at the bank or the tailor shop. You probably slew your first dragon with them, or saw Delucia for the first time with them, or ran through the Ophidian jungles with them.

I think, OP, that UO has never "led you around the nose giving you one thing to do after another", even if the devs have started to throw that recipe at old bored players in a desperate effort to keep the small subscriber base now. But giving you one thing to do after another was never part of UO's original feel or design, bluntly. You m ust have found things to do before that entertained you without an in-game "quest" or "reward" program incentivizing you to do it or have fun. I think what's really missing from UO now is community, because if you have community, there's always something to do. Even if it's something as silly as four of you up and deciding to go cut wood together and throw a picnic table party in the middle of town. Or finding and skinning every deer within five screens of town, or heading off into a dungeon. There were never "huge rewards" for doing these things in the distant past of UO--- in fact, the rewards were tiny in many cases. I've noticed since coming back that the gold drop off of every manner of beast is hugely inflated-- you were lucky to find 4 rat men in the swamp and get 13 or 17 gold off each of 'em back in "my day." You made most of your money selling the junk you found on bodies other than the money-- their clothing, weapon, whatever. And crafting, even at lower skill levels, was much more profitable (this helped new/young/casual players IMHO, I have NO idea why they made the profs so relatively unprofitable now at around the 50.0 skill level).

I would agree with the post I quoted, that it's community that made UO, not a never ending stream of new directed content from the devs. If you want that, honestly, you are way way better off in a game that was custom built to give that, such as WOW. UO was never meant or designed for it as far as I can tell and it wasn't until YEARS after launch that they even started to toss more truly new or directed content at the players, and even then , it really comes off like it's for lack of any better ideas as to how to occupy people when the game is really past its prime and dying and has bled out so many of its players.

    spend the money clubbing???

I nearly spit out my pepsi when I read that. Don't forget to dust off your Members Only jacket first....clubbing....LOL.

  16. Community in U0 is gone because it has become a recall to spot game.

Community in UO is gone because gold is overly abundant. (once you learn)

Community in UO is gone because we have been given events not random exporable world.

Community in UO is gone because there is no need to band up. If you dont PvP what do you need people for. Oh right boss monsters. Recall, kill, go home. BORING.

Community in UO is gone because of soulstones, 7 characture slots. The ability to be all.

Community in UO is gone because the game moved away from its roots.

Community is gone because you cant lose a lick in uo. I remember buddies looting my body for me.

The fact that you can run around for 8 hours on a weekend and not see another player doesn't help. Even if you "fixed" all those things.

Though I agree most of those are valid points. It started going downhill even before I left six years ago, when everyone started having GM Smiths and other mules and no longer needed to go into towna nd barter with other players for services. Having something stolen once in awhile when negotiating for a repair was well... part of the experience. :) Though it was very rare and most people were honest.

  18. I agree.
It is a game. Theft is part. Death is part. Loss is part.
10 years and the fact that no one is at places besides events and new boss monsters... is a big reason too.

The fact that we are all GMs

The fact that you dont need GM now is also a problem.

    You dont need buds.

The fact you can have a bizzillion vendors on a house too.
Hmm. Perhaps 3 vendors too a house.

I agree but they should restrict it maybe to a number of vendors per account or something. Because if you just restrict it PER HOUSE, we will be right back to how things were four years ago, with each person owning like 8 houses.

This is what I think is wrong with so many dev decisions. They go away from what might be better for the game long-term, and opt for what's easy and waht players want/what will make the devs heroes for the month.

They do this pretty much regardless of how it will affect the game long term. Let me give an example. I was a big fan of Arena, Daggerfall and Morrowind. I'm a huge critic of Oblivion. I felt that it emphasized all the wrong things trying to please the wrong crowd that never even bought the previous games or made fun of them anyway. It appealed to a shallower casual actiongamer segment of the market that doesn't "really" like RPG's or deep immersive games and as a result got shallower and cheaper.

Problem is, people who only buy a game cause it has action and good graphics, move onto something else in two months. You're not going to make longterm fans out of them.

So let's just look at MMORPG design that way. They have even MORE reason to do so because unlike Oblivion, even after you buy the game you keep paying to play it. So MMORPGS want people to want to keep playing.

Problem is, if you constantly give the common denominator what they "want" (i.e. make teh game easier, make skills easier, make the ruleset safer and more restrictive on PvP and stealing, nerf skills, add Trammel, let everyone get 7 GM trade characters and mules, let everyone have houses with 35 vendors, etc.) you are compromising the long term viability of the game. You make people really happy for a month but bored in three. Instead of still a little complainy right now but still paying six months later.

So, I really don't understand a lot of the dev decisions made regarding UO. Even if we just look at it from the "profit" perspective, and nothing else, I still feel they've made really stupid decisions that cost them subscribers.

Then why not play Siege? Many of these things do not apply there.

  21. Well I do.

Go to siege and see how active it really is.
And 2ndly why should I have to leave where I started.

How about this. Make T2A a siege rule set. Add in random events. Odd collectables. Strange adventure... and see what happens.

    Think out of the box.

I know how active it is, it is the only shard I ever play. I'm just thinking that it is highly unlikely that the T2A idea or anything like that will ever be implemented for you.

  24. You are a horrible person... why would you want to hurt those poor otters? What have they ever done? You probly do not even use their blubber to keep warm.... that is just disgusting :\ you should be ashamed :/

Anyways Keep with the game until it dies... hopefully it will not but keep with it none the less

I'm just curious why do some people seem to hope the game will "go on forever'? it's likely that it will only lose players over time, not gain them. Especially since truly revamping it you might as well start over and make UO2 because of the engine limitations and such and the fact that today's MMORPG kids won't play a dated game. I have that special place for UO but I really don't see the "future" in it in terms of ever really being a robust active game again.

Nothing wrong with hoping; believing it is something else. However, as there is no other MMORPG out there that holds any interest for someone like me, I try and maintain some optimism, however misplaced.

  27. Well thats where we disagree. I dont believe it will be implemented for me. I believe changes will be implemented for the game. Highly unlikely... once. Now. UO needs to drastically rethink its future.

5 lands or is it 6 plus SA coming... Its time to focus on the lands and attach rulesets to them.

    Simple.
Trammel has the Kingsmen. Law. No stealing. No PvP. PvM all the way.

Fel. has chaos but some schmoo who makes money on insurance. No stealing. Fel is now you item based realm of bag it, tag it and wear it.

Tokuno. The land of contraband. 1000's of stealable items that can be stolen and looted off players. These items have the unique tag of "stolen goods". They can be stolen on any facet.

    Malas. Who knows.

T2A. No housing. Full Siege ruleset. Land of random exploration and crazy events.

    Bingo.

Agreed that just habitually tacking on new areas is a big mistake. Even in WOW with its much bigger player base doing this results in the near abandonment of earlier zones. And UO already has this problem of mass abandonment of most of the game. Tacking on new zones is an incomprehensible use of resources if they are going to bother with that level of major additions/dev time. Fix and make the existing game more playable, work on the economy, etc.

It is honestly beyond belief to me that they've actually sunk a lot of money in adding new areas, cities, etc., while leaving so much of the original game, or so many of the broken changes introduced since T2A, unmodified/fixed.

Some subtle but far-impacting changes to the economy would occupy players for quite awhile and resolve a lot of problems... without having to spend programmer time creating new realms.

Could be, though, that they're just more interested with tossing something out you have to purchase or buy game codes to play, rather than stuff that improves the existing game.

Contentwise they should leave events turned on indefinitely. Like TOT II and just change the colours of the dyes every six months. How hard is that? Would only take 1 day max. Leave Magincia on. Then players can go can get cool rubble anytime they want. EMs managed to create interesting content easily each month. I dont know why they dont release a new peerless each couple of months or a cool strongbox quest.
