Squelch and kick(telestorm to a far-away Tram overland subserver). Too many times events would be crashed by these greedy lil buggers that spam "When's the drop? Can I have my drop now? Spawn the boss already so I can get my drop." ect ect. This, I feel, would go a long way to solving the spamming event-crashers that don't care if they are ruining other players fun. Thanks. :)

I have been to a lot of events and have rarely seen this. Stop crying and when this hapens in 1 out of 100 events then just mute that person. Some people are such drama queens.

I'm not crying. Because you don't see it doesn't mean it isn't happening.

It depends on the shard honestly...I've been to events on many shards and only a few have those types of people. It IS annoying but you just have to block it out. Imagine that you are an actor on a stage and the audience his heckling you...do you stop in the middle of your performance to tell those people to shut up or do you just keep going?

The EM's should be good at blocking out the stupidity and the players should do the same and not let a few rotten apples ruin things :)

But I am not the one on stage. I am a part of the audience, and the one sitting two seats down wont get off his phone.

I attend on average about 30 to 40 events a month. this happens once in a while but usually only when the EM has been idle or texting for a very long period of time, which can be boring for many players so is understandable. My best advice would be to put those players on ignore. they are a small minority. Any time you have a large group of people, especially in a video game, its to be expected that a few will not "play nice"

Yep and that's super annoying but you gotta learn to block them out...either that or say *HEY CAN YOU SPEAK UP I CAN'T HEAR YOUR WHOLE CONVERSATION!* really loud...that'll make em stop :) lol

The EMs are not regular full time employees of Broadsword and easily abused powers such as these should not be in their hands.

I am somewhat familiar with the powers that EM's have and I know for a fact that an EM can pull you to where they are. Telestorming would be that power in reverse. And being squelched? Not sure how abuse-able that can be. A five-minute squelch on a spammer isn't bad is it?

It's just my opinion, but I don't really believe that Advisors have any place nor do they serve any role at EM Events.

    They are not GMs
    They are not EMs
They are nothing more than a glorified "Help stuck" button. At best, they can pass a message on to Mesanna and you can continue to hope for the best outcome regarding the matter.
They serve the community in providing helpful information to players upon request (eg: how do I dig up a treasure chest?) and to move yourself, your pets, a monster, or a corpse into an accessible area.
Furthermore they are not mediate players in any way shape or form. It's not their job.

What in the literal hell, is "telestorming"?

If we ban people for saying "where's my drop at EM events?", then what's next? It opens up a Pandora's box of asking for other speech to be, in your own words, squelched. That's not okay. Kicking players because you can't deal with having to look past their dialogue is selfish and hurts the overall spirit of the game.

While I don't know about other shards, on ATL people complain about the drops (along with EVERYTHING ELSE), but it's not some immediate problem that requires additional EM superpowers be granted.

I am not saying squelch the person that asks about the drop once. This would be for the one that ctrl-q's the question to the point that it pushes everything else off the journal and covers up the EM's, and all other players chat in the game itself.

It is a term I first heard used in UO from "back in the day". It was a time where most every shard had the population that Atlantic has currently. When shard-wide quests came into being, everyone would be bunched up into one or two of the subservers during the event and would make it very difficult for the game to function properly. From what I remember and understand, the lag was so bad that even the mobs would lag. To help remedy this problem, random players would be teleported to safe locations, usually to towns many subservers away. This would ease the strain on the specific subserver that the event was occurring.

    @Sunseri
It's not made up, when Trammel was created, the server overload was so bad it kicked random people out of game, telestormed (Transported others) off that server to some other random location, log in servers wouldn't allow you back in, the house placement that happened was reverted at least 2x. It use to happen often, and shard reverts were common place. You'd log on to find everything you'd done or gained the prior day gone. Long ago, but it really did happen.

I promise that it did happen as I described. I really would not have any reason to make that up and post it in a forum where others, that have played longer than me, would see what I said and refute my post.

Telestorming is real. It happened to me when Trammel was opened for house placement. Starr Long, one of the original UO developers, spoke of it at the 15th anniversary event in Fairfax if you care to dig for the video.

It still happens in some form...when you teleport sometimes and you get the message..*Strange magics have re-directed you to a safe location*

You are correct. Trammel's opening to house placement was the first wide use (and automatically kicking in) when any particular subserver had too many people. I don't remember any placement reverts on Sonoma, just a lot of lag when trying to place a large house and seeing the ghost image, but unable to click OK. Some said they saw their house go down, only for it to "poof" back into the deed.

Telestorm and Squelch are "powers" that are already in the game, EMs just need access to them. (Seers had them)

Could they be abused? EH.. maybe? Just limit the amount of time they can squelch for, say 30mins to 1 hour (the usual length of an event) and limit the number of times one person can get telestormed before an automatic GM/Mesanna call is generated on the issue.

Agreed even if it was only for 5 or 10 min I think the perp would get the idea soon enough. As for Telestorming that too could have a limit and would be something that should only be used when squelching or whatever doesn't work.... or if the person is blatantly disregarding the order to back off. I wish they had a "push" that shoved folk back 5 tiles. I thought Mesanna was trying something like that.

EM's should be paying attention to what's going on with the event... not dishing out discipline because someone is asking about drops.

Always love the idea that 99% should conform and accept juvenile behavior of the 1%. It's amazing how such a small percentage of idiots can make any given situation intolerable for the decent folks having a good time. When I attend an event I'm there as much for the event as I am at a shot for a prize. The odds of actually getting a drop and then the drop actually being something I consider cool is fairly low. The event is my prize and I would like to enjoy it. Be thankful every day I don't own this game cause there would be one verbal warning followed by a 24 hour ban.

I speak the truth. If it were up to the whiny little teenage girls of Stratics, the 6 person developer staff would have to micromanage every single little aspect of this game.

Waaahhh! Someone keeps asking for drops at an event. Let's make new powers to kick them or shut them up!
Waaahhh! I can't figure out the IDOC timer anymore. If you don't change it back: I QUIT!
Waaahhh! My PVP character loses in battles. Please make adjustments to nerf other templates and strengthen mine!

Oh Merlin doesn't agree with taking action on something that doesn't need action taken? HE HAS NOTHING CONSTRUCTIVE TO SAY AND JUST CALLS NAMES. Derp Derp Derp.

We see thread after thread of this total non-sense.

Well thank God you don't own the game and don't have the power to ban people just because you're too impatient to tolerate other gamers acting in ways you don't like. Comments like that are exactly why EMs, who aren't really employees in the first place, shouldn't be given any sort of new 'super power' .

    And I repeat:

The EM's should be paying attention to the event, not having to dishing out discipline.

The notion that people asking about drops at an EM event is somehow a problem so big that it warrants developers attention is a major exaggeration.

It's the other way around - you're the example of why things shouldn't be done. As I said previously in this thread, start banning people for asking about drops... then what's next? What's the next type of speech that you won't tolerate to see, and rather than ignore it, ask for such speech to be disallowed/'squelched'?

But then again, I have nothing constructive to say...

    All semantics, chief.

Actually Merlin you shut me right down. Normally I consider myself capable of debating most any subject. But since you've brought to light the "Waaahhh!"and "Derp, Derp, Derp" rebuttal, I'm clearly unable to match your brilliant precision and cutting edge insight. You've left me speechless.... Not saying I surrender my points. Currently I'm working with some grade school children with a Neener Neener Neener argument which I feel may absolutely shred your otherwise ironclad case.

So Merlin, just so I can understand your point of view. You see it as perfectly acceptable if one, and sometimes more, player come into an EM event and starts spamming "When's the drop?" and "Let's get on with it, there's another EM event in 30 minutes on another shard." ? And all the while, the ones that play that shard as their home shard should accommodate said spammer(s) or be called out as cry babies?

"Waaahhh! Someone keeps asking for drops at an event. Let's make new powers to kick them or shut them up!"

By the look of what I have posted in this thread compared to what you have posted, who's being the cry baby? I have shown respect while you have not. Good day.

Not surprised by your response: unable to discuss the topic - booting players for unwanted speech during EM events - you resort to semantics.

    My points remain the same:
EM's should focus on the event at hand, not dishing out discipline for saying "what's the drop? where's my drop".
Banning/squelching/disciplining this type of speech opens the possibility of having it done elsewhere
Stratics is filled with ridiculous threads where minor issues are overblown and the OP's usually want Devs to waste their short resources to micro-manage their minor complaints. This being one of them.

You're the one who made it personal here - not I.

The one who's being the cry baby is the one suggesting people be banned because they're not adult enough to look past the in-game comments of other players. There are bigger issues with EM events (and this game in general) than your minor complaint of people spamming in chat. Spamming in chat has been around in this game pretty much from the outset. Not sure how this is some sort of surprise for you.

I posted my original points in respectful manner - see them in my response above this. Does disagreeing with you constitute disrespect? I think not.

Would you say this to me if this conversation happened face to face? Not likely. Anyway who is calling for a ban of anyone? Reread my statement about squelch and telestorming. No mention of a ban anywhere in that post at all.

Did you consider not everyone of my replies is geared toward you? Context.

You certainly suggested cutting off someone's speech and/or kicking them to another area. Lucky used the "b" word.

If you suggested something as, in my humble opinion, weak and whiny as "telestorming" or "squelching" people because you couldn't bear to have to look past some chat spamming, I don't see why I wouldn't repeat my comments face to face. But are we really going to go there? This is a computer game. A 17 year old one at that.

How is telestorming and squelch weak and whiny? Simply because you personally do not like the idea? In your opinion, the spammer should be accommodated at the expense of others? The squeaky wheel gets the grease, so to speak.

People who are opposed to having action taken against those who interrupt the events most likely fall into the category of the ones that would have action taken against them.

Or maybe its someone who just thinks that this is just a minor issue that doesn't warrant attention from limited developer resources.

Again - EM's should be guiding an event along its storyline, not playing baby-sitter and 'squelching' or 'telestorming' others. The next thing you know, we will have a thread on here about someone who got telestormed but didn't deserve it, claim they 'missed the drop' because of it, and have another discussion about it. Status-quo beats making bad changes like the one being suggested by the OP.

Who are you to say how people should act at events?
Other people asking the EM's questions (stupid or not) ruins the event for you?
You must be a real tolerant person lol.
The entire nature of events/drops is based upon greed. If you have such issue with it just don't attend the events maybe?

At least the supposed juveniles are actually at the event.
I can't stand all the trammies who hop in gen chat to whine about pvp trashtalk when they have never pvped or even been to felucca. That is serious juvenile behavior.

If they actually were juveniles that would be a little better lol. As far as the Fel PVP trash talk there's another situation where a ban would be something I'd enjoy see being enforced again like the old days. Some of the PVP trash talk is way over the top. Not to mention having to hear it forever. It's amazing how many people have no idea how to function in society. No respect for themselves or anyone else. If people only knew how stupid sounding they come off sometimes. You'd swear many never made it through grade school and clearly had no parenting.

does it really surprise you that people spending a large portion of their lives playing on online game dont know how to function in society? just saying. i think the behaviorl in uo is very good in general considering there is absolutely no enforcement of tos. any time you get more than a handful of online players together, there is bound to be a few whose strongpoint is not politeness. the trashtalk in uo seems very tame actually compared to online console games. honestly for many people thats why they play. because they can blow off steam and act totally atrocious wheras irl this wouldnt be acceptable. but its not real life, its a game. i do agree tho that the osi UO community is particulary toxic when compared to other online games of the genre.

Years back when events on LS had us meet up at British's Castle, the EM there would squelch people for spamming and being annoying. You were saying? I wouldn't doubt it happened on other servers too.

Granted, that was 10 years ago, and I don't know if the EMs still have that power, but if they do, there's no reason why they shouldn't use it.

The deliberate interrupting of events is a tactic to get people to stop attending them so the people the interrupt them get a better chance at a drop.
