I started training inscription this morning. I consolidated the gold I made off troglodytes and lumberjacking to fund the training.

Starting in Haven I bought the skill at 40 and took the inscription new player quest to build it up to 50 which went buy real quick just making poison scrolls.

Onto luna I went and lucky enough other scribes were training and an abundance of scrolls were available as well as reagents from the Holy mages.

So there for a great while I bought scrolls, scribed a bunch of scrolls and sold them back to the Mages and made a good tidy profit after a while.

Reaching about 76 or so skill I decided to train by making spell books. I know that when I started I had a 26% chance to succeed. Yes it was kind of early to train on them as far as gains, but I was also looking to get a good collection of slayer books when I would finally be done.

Right now I am at 93.2 and after grinding books during that time I noticed a pattern

Over 40,000 blank scrolls I got the following

    3 orc slayers
    3 dragon slayers
    3 Tetheran slayers
    2 Ophideans
    4 Ogre slayers
    6 scorpion slayers
    3 snake slayers
2 LRC 16 books (highest so far)

The other books I donated to New Haven.

Now those are the only slayers I crafted out of 40,000 scrolls. Nothing else and definitely no super slayers.

It seemed like the RNG was set on a rinse and repeat cycle when it came to slayers. To say the least it was a bit odd.

Whats your Magery? If you dont have 120 good luck getting Super Slayers or 3 mod books. If you have GM Magery then those numbers look right. 120 FTW!

Don't forget that if you have a GM lumberjack, a cook with at least 60 Cooking skill, and a scribe with at least 50 Inscription skill, you will never have to buy blank scrolls again. Just have the cook make wood pulp out of the bark fragments the lumberjack finds and then have the scribe make blank scrolls from the wood pulp.

    1 bark fragment + 1 water = 1 wood pulp
    1 wood pulp = 5 blank scrolls

Your scribe can also use the wood pulp to make scroll binders or blank books (you also need beeswax to make the blank books).

I am afraid the crafting method is not worth it, economically.

Infact, 1 bark fragment on average sells for like 750 gp (150K for 200).
Since 1 bark makes 1 pulp and this 5 blank scrolls this means that each scroll comes costing some 750/5 = 150 gp.

Any Mage in a Mage shop sells them for 5 gp.

In order for bark fragments to be a viable crafting source for blank scrolls, a bark fragment should not cost more than 25 gp (equivalent of 5 scrolls cost...).

Good luck in finding bark fragments in quantity at 25 gp each or less.........

Hello?!!! I said use your lumberjack to get the bark fragment. Did I really have to spell out that the lumberjack does that by chopping trees? How do you think the vendors that sell the bark fragments got them? Does anyone in this game do anything for themselves anymore or does most everyone think monotonous "manual labor" is beneath them and that is why someone invented scripts?

    Sheesh!!!!!!

    Unbelievable.

I think he is just making the point that it would be more economic to sell your bark fragments for the going rate to players and then use some of that gold to buy scrolls from NPC vendors. You would end up with the same number of scrolls and a little extra gold in your pocket.

I guess what he wants to say is, that he is better off selling the bark fragments from his lumberjacking and then buy the scrolls with that money.

That, or he hates lumberjacking ;)

This is a game. 'Economically viable' is a term that belongs in the real world.
If you want to take into account which is the most profitable way to work, that's fine. Some people will prefer to make their own scrolls just because they can. Neither way is more or less right than the other, it's up to the individual.

Still make it not worth since I can sell them for 150 gp....

Why would I want to chop and use them to make something worth 5 gp when I can actually sell them for 150 gp ?

    Make no sense to me.........

Why would someone want to chop and use Bark Fragments to make something worth 5 gp (Blank Scrolls) when it is actually possible to sell them for 150 gp and so buy some thirty blank scrolls at any Mage shop ??

Use the Bark = 5 blank scrolls.

Sell the Bark and Buy scrolls = 30 blank scrolls.

    Now, which is better ??

I'm not entitled to an opinion?

I play the game, the same as everyone else here, and I pay to play it, the same as everyone else here.

All I said was, not everyone measures things by cost and profit. I don't. Just a matter of opinion and playstyle.

Not everyone who plays UO does it primarily for the purpose of making a profit at the expense of other players, popps.

Edited to add: You also left out of your calculations the cost of a contract of employment or a vendor rental contract; vendor rental fees, if any; vendor fees; and the cost, if any, for runes you buy and mark to advertise your vendor/shop.

    *Waves big stick*

Down, down you pack of highjackers!

On reaching 95 inscribe other slayer types have started to appear in more frequency. Lizard man and elemental type slayers.

On a side note. I appreciate the info Tina and it will come in handy down the road. I have a LJ, a scribe now, all I need is a cook and I do have another active account that I can make one on.

Still at 95. Just got a demon slayer :)

Hehe, thanks. I should of trained the old way. It would of have been cheaper and shorter, but one thing that made it bearable was the make max option on the scribe pen.

I'm at 99.8, 4k gold in the bank and about 630 scrolls left. I think I will get my guaranteed gain and do other things.

    Family time you know.
