This is at least part of the promised speed hacking fix.

  5. Yay! The best way to solve speedhacking bug is to make it a feature! SWEET!

    It's a PUBLISH not a PATCH.

To elaborate, not all publishes require a patch since not all of them have anything to do with the client. Basically movement is server-sided so no need to patch.

I've said this before, I'll say it again. Speed hacking is, in my opinion, largely a myth. It's a matter of perception, and a matter of disparities between hardware and connection. What they are trying to do is make everyone move at the same speed, regardless of their connection and hardware. It's what needs to be done.

I used to suspect this, but now I am fairly convinced. I am accused of speed hacking all the time, and I know I don't. My computer isn't ancient, I use the enhanced client, and I move with the thumb joystick on my mouse. This means I'm always moving at top speed, and I change directions very fast. As a result, I am constantly accused of speed hacking.

The truth is I have never seen anyone move faster than I do, not once in the past six months since I came back, unless I was being affected by fairly severe lag.

I've had someone say.. watch this.. and then they run around a little ever so slightly quicker. Almost wouldn't notice if they didn't do a before and after. Maybe it's just network optimization, as they claim, maybe it's speedhacking.
What needs to be done is a level speed fix. But I wouldn't want my cable modem to chug at 14000 baud dialup speed either.
I see many chug along slow, while I must look like the flash as I run by. How do they fix that scenario?

    I agree 100%

  13. Well, I don't have much of an opinion as to whether speedhacking is a myth or not, but I'm 100% positive that movement speed is not the major benefit of speedhacking. Speedhacking affects the data stream to reduce or eliminate the delay between swings or spells. A rumored secondary effect of this is that people in the vicinity of a speedhacker will start to lag. I believe I have observed this, where I'll be lag free all night, then all of a sudden I'm attacked by another player and my screen starts jumping around like crazy - but again it's just an anecdotal observation.

My computer hardware has never been cutting edge and I spent years of my UO life playing via dial-up, then satellite (talk about latency), then various DSL connection, and finally just a couple months ago I switched to a super fast cable connection. I'm zooming around as fast as most other people now, but whenever I've seen people run circles around me, speedhacking never popped to the front of my mind. However, when I've maxed out stamina & SSI to cap swing speed and someone swings twice as fast as me, or when I've capped FC/FCR and someone casts spells way quicker than me, or when my screen starts hopping around with lag as soon as someone attacks, then I think speedhack. I can hold my own in PvP and have a good idea of to max out a template; and some people are clearly fighting outside of the limits.

Let's just say, I don't think the UO developers would make such a big deal about fighting speedhacking (they included it in the main UO Herald announcement of things they are working on you know) if it wasn't a pretty big issue they felt they had to deal with. Maybe they should re-phrase speedhack to illegal scripting, or something like that they are trying to fight.

When you start getting into this your moving into different territory. I personally have never noticed this, but I have heard it reported by quite a few people. What you are talking about is packet pushing or packet flooding.

It is the mechanics of what people call speed hacking, and while I'm pretty certain it doesn't affect movement speed, but it may well affect other things, like spell casting, or possibly cause lag on clients in the same area, etc. I don't have a strong opinion on that because I don't generally pay close attention to how fast people cast or swing.

However, I do pay attention to how fast people move when they are chasing me, or I am chasing them, and I know that I have never seen anyone move faster than I have in the six months or so that I have been back, unless there is some clear and obvious reason for it, such as me running into an obstacle, or me having problems with lag.

As for other players causing me to lag. I typically have quite a few problems with lag on the enhanced client, but I can't say that I have ever been in a situation where I could say that lag was connected to some specific character in any way. My lag issues are typically related to problems with the enhanced client, or network issues.
