I'm kicking around the idea of putting together some goody bags on Origin to hand out to players who have never played there (or never got very far with playing there). I figure trying to put this sort of stuff on a vendor to sell it is just asking for some jerk to come along and buy up the stuff with magic properties on it and unravel it. So, handing it out to people who are interested enough to drop something else they're doing and show up at a set time and place might be a better approach.

What I need suggestions for are what runes to include in a book or two of useful places for new characters, i.e., which towns, dungeons, hunting grounds?

Also, what types of weapons would be useful to craft for dexxers and what properties can I imbue on them that don't require the high-end imbuing materials? I'm really at a loss on this one. Don't want to waste time and materials trying to make weapons that no one would ever consider using for training a new character.

I'll probably be including an LRC suit with 50-60ish resists and maybe luck, probably an all 70s suit with no LRC but maybe some luck, spell channeling mage weapon, full spellbook, spell channeling fishing pole, butcher's war cleaver, set of filled rune books and an empty runebook or two,and a crystal ball of knowledge. Might offer to imbue some training jewelry with mods of your choice from a menu I come up with (i.e., usng materials I can afford LOL).

Don't know when I'll be able to pull this off, but hopefully by the end of the month, because I suspect we'll be getting anoher publish in June and maybe that would give people a little bit of time to at least be mobile on Origin by then.

    Weapons:

    • Classic noob sword is katana. Good mix of damage and speed.
    • Classic noob fencing weapon is kryss.
    • Classic noob mace weapon....I have no ****ing clue.
    Weapon Properties:

    • HCI.
    • DCI.
    • SSI.
    • DI.
    Nice and basic.

Maybe best, though, to just GM craft some good, fast weapons like the kat and kryss. 35 DI and nothing else. Good for new characters.

    Locations:

    • Wrong. (Even with the beefed up monsters, if you can get one of those lizardmen alone, you can still kill them, I think, with a lesser character and get good gear while you're doing it.)
    • New Haven Mine.
    • And this is when I miss the old Despise.
    • Shame.
    • Moongate, so they can get to Ilshenar and find some ettins.

    For runes, I'd say include:

Luna Moongate - gives access to the moongate system, a bank, and several shops.

A public normal & corrupted crystal portal that is set Anyone security to give access to all towns & dungeons.

Yew sheep pens, the two cotton fields, and the brown bear area east of Moonglow's zoo for Tailor types.

The cave north of Britain cemetary, the cave in the valley west of Yew, the Minoc caves, and Delucia for the Miners & Smiths.

The Solen area outside Wind for decent gold & gem loot, along with zoogi to use or sell as Translocation Powder for Bags of Sending.

    You could also include:

A book telling of ways to make gold appropriate for new players. The Solen with zoogi & the Queen & Ambitious queen quests. Buying and selling bottles from other towns to Luna's Alchemist's and Provisioner. Shearing sheep and selling the wool to tailor shops and ingots to the blacksmith shops with the idea for player vendors once they have a house or can afford a Luna vendor.

A book of basic playing info that gives information the game doesn't teach you in New Haven. How to make your own arrows if an archer, a quick resists lesson, and such.

What Origin needs is some Vendors... Stocked Vendors who sell things like full spellbooks, Empty Runebooks, LRC suits...

As for new players they need a rune to a rune library... that is very helpful... people to be in chat when they have questions..... A book detailing how to ask for help... etc.... what channel to be in for chat.... as often the "help" channel is empty of all but spambot in Haven.... and details on how to change the chat channel.

Armor: Leather mage suit with 100% LRC. Studded leather Warrior suit all 70's, + stamina. Both simple and helpful, not requiring anything special.

Weapons: Swords: Katana, Mace: War Axe, Fencing: Leafblade, Archery: Bow. DI, Hit mana Leech, Hit Lower attack. 25% SSI would be good for all of them, but requires 4 relic frags.

Runes to Shame, Wrong, and Covetous. Luna, New Mag, Zento.

Thank you for all th suggestions, everyone. I will probably take a pass on trying to do anything to try to explain UO to completely new players. I was really just thinking more of putting some basic stuff together for current players who don't already play on Origin but would like to get started there using brand new characters. Presumably they would understand game mechanics already, don't mind starting out with very little, and just need a few basic things to make getting started a little bit easier.

Taming I always do the Malas spot with the Kirin/Unicorn and Fountain. Good taming and then go to the Zoo in Moonglow for turn in points.

    GOOD IDEAS Tina Small

I have Made a MAGE on a different shard from scratch: So I am fresh from having the problems you are describing:
Mage 50 Eval 50 plus high intelligence
    Strength 26
Dex 10 I buy taming skill/animal lore then tame a horse

    Here's what I needed MOST!

    1. MARK SCROLLs to put in the newbie spell book until one can find and can buy a spell book full of spells at a price they can afford.
    2. RUNE BOOKs empty
Then I can ride my horse everywhere and mark my own runes. LOL

While running all over the country I found some reasonable vendors and bought a
64 SPELL BOOK which I was able to purchase with money earned in Haven escorting NPCs
also some RUNE books, but never could find anyone selling The MARK scrolls.
I picked up runes scattered and in piles all over Luna City so I could mark them.
As for REAGENTS - New Players often toss away bags of reagents and I picked up reagents on the ground and bought reagents with Haven Escort gold.

I was able to Mark Runes to every classic city/Dungeon but yes a rune to a good RUNE LIBRARY would have been handy except while out riding around on my horse I found a great library. So, not having a SHIP I was able to recall to various places li:

    ARCTIC (Dagger) Island
    PAPUA
    BUCCANEER'S DEN

And of course, a LRC suit would be very nice.. :)

Remember that trial accounts are limited to 'help' channel. That's why I put up with the bot and hang out in that channel on Europa.

For resource gathering I would put in Trinsic Passage to Delucia, both Trammel and Felucca.

A bauble. It makes it a lot easier to train spell casting.

I agree with most of the suggestions here re basic stuff. However, the full runebooks is getting close to the line as to what is too much to give. I have to say, the most fond memories I have of UO involved the construction of my runebooks, the first LRC suit I made, the first trip to Buc's den, after earning enuf to buy my first boat.

That said, I think the most valuable thing a person could have if starting out now would be an organized guide to UO. A new player might go years before discovering resources such as Stratics. Thus a book of helpful hints would be great. The book could give links to Stratics, give advice on what to do when everything goes grey, what to do when trying to buy off a vendor, Remember, the new player will have a memorable experience during his/her first encounter with a mongbat.

If you head north from the Spirituality gate in Ilshnar to where the pixies are, you'll find baubles on the ground. When you have it in your pack you can target it for many of the spells and it will absorb the damage. So if you're training, say level 6 spells, you can cast corp por on it and gain in skill.

I wasn't really expecting to be handing out stuff to total newcomers.

I was picturing the "goody bags" going primarily to current players who don't already have characters on Origin or never got very far with ones they made there in the past. I was also considering throwing in a few house add-on deeds too (soulforge, forge, anvil, loom, spinning wheel, water trough, elven oven), in the hopes that maybe a few people who play together elsewhere might eventually consider plopping a house down on Origin just to make it easier for their little group to train there and show up when Origin and Izumo are testing a new publish.

I thought, perhaps naively, that if a few adventurous (or really bored) players get a foothold there, they might in turn be able to pester a few buddies into joining them. Probably a dumb idea. But I really get tired of the comments that seem to occur with every publish where people complain about the people on Origin not catching some problem before the publish went live elsewhere. I don't have a shop on Origin nor does anyone else in my guild have one there (I'm giving up on the idea of ever having a shop in UO, it just doesn't work for the kinds of stuff I'd be able to sell). We won't be personally benefiting from this in any way, other than seeing the shard have some more life to it once in a while, when it really counts. Putting the stuff together also gives me something to do in UO for the next couple of weeks. It's an alternative to making pointless trouble-causing posts here on Stratics. :)

Went and found a bauble. No joy. Did get a gain (103.3) trying Wildfire on it though you can just cast that on yourself.

You can join a skilled focus if the one casting the arcane circle is within 20 points of your skill. You can cast for a group between 74 & 114 skill yourself.

If you have two accounts run dual client and train your Arcanist on one using a macro while crafting with the other account. I ran a ten repetition UOAssist macro over and over on the left side client while crafting on the right side. Watch out for your local Pita who may wander by and page a GM on you 'since your obviously unattended macroing!' even though one character is obviously busy doing different things while the other is holding down a stool at the workbench beside him.

You can cast WoD on yourself as long as you don't get a focus. (it doesn't do much damage when you're at full health) I made a macro in EC that was Cast WoD, target self, Pause 5 secs, cast Heal (or greater), pause 5 Secs. Repeat 10 times. You can record a similiar one using UOA.

Good suggestions. My request for goodies would be:
    1. LRC suit
    2. Empty Runebook
    3. Weapon with 40% DI and high HML
When I start on new shards I like to run the haven quests to get full spellbook and necro book. I don't see any reason you would need to include those items.

Not everyone is as motivated as you apparently are! Also there's no quest for a completely full spellbook. The undead slayer one you got for training inscription to 50 only has 54 spells in it when you get..

What kind of weapons do you like to use?

Doubleplay, I too enjoy the feeling of achievement and the experience gained by doing-it-all by yourself. If everything you need is handed to you on a golden platter too much is missed. Yet, having made characters and having done the skills, dropped hard earned skills too often to meet new skills requirements, and having done it all the hard way during very difficult times, it is nice to have a helping hand while starting a new character on another shard. and not having to do all that GRIND again just to be able to kill an attacking mongbat. Most of my friends have left Sonoma now. Some have gone to other shards and others have quit UO. So .. I go to different shards to look around. On one shard I visited, some players were trying to help me so much, I had to tell them to stop helping me or they next they would be playing the game for me too. :)

So simple basic needs are appreciated.

My preference, for training, is a whirlwind weapon for whichever of the three skills I've decided to use. Once I get the requisite tactics and weapon skill to use specials I find whirlwinding multiple targets gains skill pretty fast. Some people are all about the AI though for farming gold, I guess?

    tina,

you helped me out once with a training mage suit on origin and as such I have a gm mage there. your generosity is very much appreciated. if we had a little bit of advertising and a fresh coat of paint on this game you'd probably need a whole guild committed to doing what your undertaking.

    cheers.

I have some more questions regarding armor and weapons for dexxers, as well as some questions regarding jewelry. Keep in mind the idea with all of this is that the characters are new but the player is most likely to already have abundant experience in UO. I also don't have tons of relic fragments (or ingots, boards, or stone of various types) to work with, so I'm trying to stick to just using residue, essence, small gems, boura pelts, barbed and horned leather, plain stone, plain wood for the crafting and imbuing.

    ------------------------------------
    DEXXER ARMOR QUESTIONS
    • With the recent changes made to nonmeddable armor to give stamina regen and LMC bonuses, what are the most helpful properties to imbue onto an all 70s suit for a new dexxer character to train in? I don't want to use relic fragments or high-end imbuing materials. Trying to stick with just using essence, residue, and small gems, and some boura pelts. That makes my choices, after getting the resists maxed out (see question below too): Mana regen, stam regen, hit point regen, mana increase, stamina increase, hit point increase, luck, and reflect physical damage. Of these, which would be most useful?
    • Also, what material is best to use for a dexxer's suit--metal, studded leather, stone, wood?
    • What's the most likely race that people would use for making a new dexxer character?
    • Also, is it necessary to get the actual physical and fire resists over 70?
    ------------------------------------
    WEAPON QUESTIONS

Are 40% Damage Increase and Hit Mana Leech enough to add? What about including any of these other properties that don't require relic fragments or high-end imbuing materials: Luck; Hit Lower Defense; Hit Lower Attack; Hit Life Leech; Hit Stamina Leech; Hit Dispel; Hit Fireball; Hit Harm; or Hit Physical, Fire, Cold, Poison, or Energy Area?

The following weapons have Whirlwind Attack as one of their special moves, but I'm not sure which ones people would actually prefer to use for training a new character. What do you think?

    Humans/Elves
    • Double Axe (3.25 speed, also has Double Strike)
    • Large Battle Axe (3.75 speed, also has Bleed Attack)
    • Radiant Scimitar (2.5 speed, also has Bladeweave)
    • Halberd (4.0 speed, also has Concussion Blow)
    • Black Staff (2.75 speed, also has Paralyzing Blow)
    • War Hammer (3.75 speed, also has Crushing Blow)
    • Kama (2.0 speed, also has Defense Mastery)
    Gargoyles
    • Gargish Talwar (3.5 speed, also has Dismount)
    • Gargish War Hammer (3.75 speed, also has Crushing Blow)

The following weapons have Frenzied Whirlwind as a special move that requires either bushido or ninjitsu skill: Wakizashi (2.5 speed and also has Double Strike); tetsubo (2.5 speed and also has Crushing Blow); and lajatang (3.5 speed and also has Defense Mastery). Does the Frenzied Whirlwind move make any of them valuable as training weapons?

These weapons have Armor Ignore as one of their special moves:

    Humans/Elves

    • Hatchet (2.75 speed, also has Disarm)
    • Katana (2.5 speed, also has Double Strike)
    • Bladed Staff (3.0 speed, also has Dismount)
    • Broadsword (3.25 speed, also has Crushing Blow)
    • Longsword (3.5 speed, also has Concussion Blow)
    • War Axe (3.25 speed, also has Bleed Attack)
    • Hammer Pick (3.75 speed, also has Mortal Strike)
    • Kryss (2.0 speed, also has Infectious Strike)
    • Spear (2.75 speed, also has Paralyzing Blow)
    • Leafblade (2.75 speed, also has Bleed)
    • Composite Bow (4.5 speed, also has Moving Shot)
    Gargoyles
    • Gargish Katana (2.5 speed, also has Double Strike)
    • Stone War Sword (3.75 speed, also has Paralyzing Blow)
    • Disc Mace (2.75 speed, also has Disarm)
    • Gargish Kryss (2.0 speed, also has Infectious Strike)
    • Shortblade (2.25 speed, also has Mortal Strike)
    • Soul Glaive (4.5 speed, also has Mortal Strike)
What weapon would you craft and then what would you imbue on it for a garg thrower, without having to use relic fragments or high-end materials?

    JEWELRY QUESTIONS
I have quite a few scrounged pieces of jewelry that have FC 1 on them and maybe one or two other properties. So I was planning to make sets of jewelry for the mage-type characters like this, just to help them get started out:
    • Ring: FC 1, FCR 2, +5 str, +10 skill 1, +10 skill 2
    • Bracelet: FC 1, FCR 2, +5 int, +10 skill 1, +10 skill 2
    Or maybe:
    • Ring: FC 1, FCR 2, +5 str, +13 skill 1, 75 luck
    • Bracelet: FC 1, FCR 2, +5 int, +13 skill 2, 75 luck
Or if I don't have enough of that scrounged jewelry, some sets like this:
    • Ring: +13 skill 1, +13 skill 2, +5 str, +5 int, 90 luck
    • Bracelet: +13 skill 1, +13 skill 2, +5 str, +5 int, 90 luck
    OR
    • Ring: +13 skill 1, +13 skill 2, +13 skill 3, +5 str, 60 luck
    • Bracelet: +13 skill 1, +13 skill 2, +13 skill 3, +5 int, 60 luck
I'm totally at a loss for what to do for jewelry for dexxers, though. Are FC and FCR useful for them? Or would something else be more valuable for a character-in-training? How much HCI or DCI is useful? I won't have tons of relic fragments to use, but could spare some for imbuing either, if it would be helpful (imbuing 10% HCI takes 3 relic fragments). Would LMC be valuable? (It takes relic fragments as well, so I'm not keen on it.) Other choices could include the following, as they don't require high-end materials:
    • Damage Increase
    • Spell Damage Increase
    • Skills
    • Stats
    • Luck
    ------------------------------------
Sorry for all the questions, folks. I'd just like to make sure whatever I put together is actually useful. Not planning to do tons of this stuff for now. Maybe 20 sets or so, but stock up on materials to do more if the demand is more than I expect. However, maybe this discussion might give some other people who want to try something similar some ideas too.
    Thanks for the feedback!

Crud. More questions, this time about shields. Is there any kind of a shield that a crafter can make and imbue that anyone would actually use for training a new character? (Not talking reforging...haven't even experimented with that yet!)

Would looted shields from Shame/Wrong/Covetous be valuable? I have a suspicion they might be, but am not really sure. What would you look for on those? Would anyone use cursed ones or is not worth the bother? And what if they're brittle or nonrepairable? Would they hold up long enough to even be helpful?

Best shields IMO for newbs are anything with 5 self repair...... This way if they train on sheep or whatever they don't need more than one shield.

After they get skilled up Shame/Wrong/Covetous etc would be the best bet. Mages can use the shield of inv if you have a few extra of those laying around.
