So in the notes it said:
    • Vanilla plants cannot be cross pollinated with other plants.
    • It is possible to get mutant colored vanilla plants using conventional gardening techniques.
The only method I know of to get mutant color seeds is to cross pollinate.
Since you can't collect pollen on it, what are these "conventional gardening techniques" being used to get mutant colored vanilla plants?

Planting the seed while both moons are waxing gibbous and you are hopping on your left foot while naked in the center of Luna bank?

Perhaps it is when they self-polinate...if they do that. I have 18 growing and they are all normal colored.

Perhaps the Devs dont't know WTF they're talking about either. *shrugs*

Is it your left foot? I had the naked part, but was using right foot.

I heard it was the left foot...but then I also heard dark wispers about dipping things in honey and whips. *looks in Flutter's direction* *runs away*

    My two guesses are:

    1) Naturalist quest
    2) Cross-pollinating two standard plants, and getting a mutation of both plant type and plant color (I don't know if this is actually possible though...)

cross pollinate two plants of the same type. the same has been done with orange petal plants. You have a chance of getting a black or white mutant vanilla plant.

I can't confirm that this can be done currently. I don't have any plants at the 7/8 day stage to test with.

Vanilla plants have a red X for pollen though...so cross polinating isn't possible.

Out of about 60 vanilla seeds gathered from my thriving plants (not in a raised garden bed), one seed doesn't want to stack with all the others. I planted that seed today. *Even though it appears identical, one wonders if that seed will result in a mutation!*

Might be possible to get them as a random result when you cross pollinate with the cactus.

if you scroll up just a little you would read that cross pollinating a vanilla plant with anything is impossible. You cannot gather pollen from it nor can you target it with another plant's pollen.

Also, Sir Bolo, one cannot cross pollinate two standard plants and get a peculiar plant -in any color.

Nimauq and I went around and around this tonight trying to figure out what it could mean; as mentioned, they neither have pollen you can use to cross-pollinate, nor can they be pollinated to. In the end, we could only think of three mechanisms by which mutant vanilla could turn up.

1.) They self pollinate naturally, so there's a very, very low chance the seeds will change to black or white. I've never seen this with any plant self-pollinated though (and I did hundreds building my seed bank), so the odds must be lower than the 1% from crossing two different parents

2.) The Vanilla is in the random list for the Sakarrah seeds somewhere, either in the Tribarrel cactus which rolls a random plant instead, or it's in the cross-breeding somewhere. The odds for this would be incredibly low, as you'd need to roll the 1/18 chance for the seed and then the 1% chance for mutation on top, assuming it's even possible to generate a Vanilla child this way.

    3.) It's a Naturalist Quest reward now.

Alternatively, and the one it's more cynically obvious to believe in... 4.) It's not in fact possible to grow mutant Vanilla without pollen, the Devs were wrong.

Following the instructions of Aurelius and Adol, I have raised more than 150 vanilla plants in TC1 using a raised garden bed and none of them produced any mutant seeds. However, I now have 213 seeds in one bag and 315 seeds in another that do not stack with each other, both producing the same vanilla plants. I started to complete the Naturalist quest, so far none of the 19 rare colored seeds belong to a vanilla plant. Adol did his best to explain what Sakarrah seeds are and what cross pollination does so that I might test that later.

I am curious, have you tried running the seeds through the seed box? There are seeds behaving exactly like this (seemingly two different kinds of the same seed that will not stack) for the cocoa tree and the seed box will not make them stack either. Also newly produced cocoa seeds produced in a raised garden bed do not produce any cocoa resource. The original seeds still do.

I'm getting more and more convinced they have used the core code for cocoa trees (which as far as I know can't be pollinated or produced in 'variant' colours) for vanilla plant, with the same result - and the statement in the publish notes was simply wrong.

I have had no troubles with the Raised Bed. It produces the seeds and any resource they give on any plant. Have not gotten any Vanilla seeds to date though... trying to talk son to go get me a few...... not successfull in that area as of yet.... Perhaps Mesanna was refering to is a seed from that gathering being able to be grown black or white... while the seed color is netural.... If you cant cross them I cant see how a plant will give you any other color then the parent plant.
The seed box needs to be able to hold # of seeds not the count of seeds... but I love them anyway... all 3 of mine are stuffed! Reminds me got to make me another one ...

seed box is a good idea. might be a fix for same-types that won't stack.

for anyone with a garden bed, you ought to get at least one vanilla seed before the next part of the arc, because they'll be needed, I think. I'm growing my first generation now, will see what happens. I'm not in it for mutations, I just want a shot at what's coming up next with the different items we can get.

oops, and you get the seeds from exodus guys at the exodus dungeon in ilsh. best way to get there is to start from Honor Ilsh.

    This is interesting.

I have two stacks of cocoa seeds. Stack A. are original seeds looted from corpse. They will produce cocoa. Stack B. are second gen seeds. They will not stack with stack A. and they will make more seeds, but not produce cocoa. I have tried to put them into the seed box to make them stack, but that doesn't seem to work.

I have 2nd generation vanilla plants growing right now (they are on day 6), they all say 0/8 for resources and seeds currently. I expect that they will produce vanilla as they are supposed to.

I haven't, I don't have access to a seed box in TC1 and I can't use it anyways since my account is twenty six months old. I started testing using plant bowls, raised about 41 vanilla plants that way then I copied a raised garden bed to TC1 and started to test on it. I got the same results on both cases. However, I'm using the seeds that I looted the first day this publish is released to TC1, so if they somehow fixed the seeds, I might need to go and find some of those fixed seeds. I still haven't received any vanilla seeds from the naturalist quest, I think at this point we need a developer response to clarify the publish notes.

I ran my first vanilla plant's seeds through my Seed Box normally, but it will be 9 days before I can tell you if they are following Cocoa Plants and will not produce resources when grown. They currently show 0/8 for both resources and seeds, but is the bug nothing happens when you click the collection icon or that number never develops?

CONFIRMED: 2nd gen vanilla seeds generate vanilla and new seeds.

Mine were never put in a seed box, so they didn't suffer from the production bug.

My seeds from my Cocoa tree say that they are the O'hii tree. Is this normal? I haven't planted them yet since I have a lot of original cocoa plant seeds (from spawn). I do not have the raised garden bed so everything is in plant bowls locked down in my house.

I have grown over 2000 vanilla plants, and I have consistently gotten 2 stacks of vanilla seeds. One pile has fewer than 1/10 of the other. I started out by just stacking the seeds in a commod box. Every day that I pulled seeds up from both fertile dirt in plant bowls, or fertile dirt with raised flowerbeds. There was always 2 different stacks. After about a week of collecting vanilla seeds, I placed all seeds in a vet reward seed box, and the 2 stacks remain the same, no matter what I tried to get them to stack in one pile. I have planted from both stacks and even put the clean up bee hive in the center of the plants. *I was just role playing with it, I was sure that it wasn't the way of getting mutants.* Still, no mutant seeds from any of the vanilla plants. We have done ant quests and obtained over 200 black, white and fire seeds, and none are vanilla. I will wait until I get a new stack of seeds, to see if that it will eventually create 3 or 4 different stacks, making them a generation type seed of vanilla plants. I also read up on vanilla plants, to see if there was something special about the way vanilla grows, and I found through a google search that...
"Vanilla plants are hermaphrodite; they contain both female and male parts, but to avoid self pollination (this can cause genetic mutation) they are separated and can only be pollinated by a certain bee found in Mexico. Attempts to bring this bee to other continents have failed, and outside of Mexico the only way to fertilize this plant is by artificial pollination."
This is why I think it is a generation of seed that will eventually randomly put out mutant seeds. It is just a educated guess. The race is on! =D
I will post here if I get a mutant, down the road. :danceb: ~Mags

Were they by any chance gathered immediately after you got a Seed of Renewal? I've a suspicion something about the rng resulting in the Seed of Renewal 'resets' the title given to the subsequent seeds.

Wow I thought I answered the Renewal Seed comment. Sorry. :/ I noticed that I got very FEW renewal seeds from Vanilla plants, compaired to other types of plants. I have harvested 32 vanilla seeds today from the "new stacks" and they all fit into the first 2 stacks. So there goes the generation seed theory.

For most plants producing seeds, I tend to get two stacks if the 'run' of seed collecting is broken by a seed of renewal randomly popping up in the course of gethering the seeds. You can use poppy seeds on the stacks though - even if they are apparently properly labelled - and if you treat both stacks with the poppy seeds, they will then both stack together. Of course, next time you collect seeds of that type, you'll probably have another stack that won't combine, so will need to repeat the process again....

Ok I used poppie dust on both stacks and it didnt allow me to combine the 2. I have a stack of 1532 and 471 and the 471 is mainly the seeds from the last batch of 2 to 3 weeks ago. I dont know if my putting a part of them in the vet reward seed box messed up the poppie dust stacking ability or not. I am wondering if I should write an email asking whats up with the mutants. I mean if I were nice about it, maybe I could get an answer posted in the next patch notes. *shrugs* I dont think I am special, so dont think I am going there! :D I just would like to see some mutant vanilla plants damn it!

Well that's weird, 're-identifying' has worked for me on all the seed types I've tried it on when I gathered two stacks of seeds, they all seemed to reset and stack properly after I used the poppy dust on both stacks.... I use the seed tray too and it's not seemed to cause any problems.

Yeah I got other colored seeds to stack that way, that I cross pollenated, like you mentioned here, but not the vanilla seeds.
I have news from Mesanna. I did take the time and wrote her an email and she wrote me a short note back. So I am sharing with you guys the exact letter. It isnt all about Vanilla plants, but I rather include it all than just word it in my own words.

From where (link ?) do players get that the coming new story arc will have players "need to have" new vanilla seeds in order to play through the arc ?
And if so, need how many to play the arc ??

Also, what would the "new" vanilla seeds differ as in comparison to the "old" vanilla seeds ?

Furthermore, should these "new" vanilla seeds be a "must have" in order to play through the coming new story arc, it would help a lot of players if detailed instructions were made available and wide spread about "how to" get these "new" vanilla seeds (whether from gardening or other means....) in order for players to be able to play through the coming new story arc.

I do not get it why informations about the game and necessary to play the story arcs are sometimes not as wide spread and common knowledge as I think they should be.

    Thanks.

Firstly, GVP was clearly speculating, secondly check the date of his post... June 2012, he was talking about events long since past :p

There's plenty of coloured vanilla out there, although people are rarely selling the seeds, I'm about to find out tomorrow if I've managed to grow the orange I need to complete my set on Europa, but I'm aware there's more complete collections on the server long ago!

I see there are still practitioners of the dark arts in these troubling times.

I don't think they are on the naturalist quest but you can get them from boglings and such.

Re you selling any seeds on LS? I only have red.

Maybe you should read post dates! You could get informations just by doing that. Also that red squiggly line under your word means something is wrong.
