I'm very frustrated now... A couple of hours ago, I placed 3 brand new vendors at my home on Pacific. I put a large amount of recently collected refinement components on them. I exited the client and went to dinner, just came back and 2 of the three have disappeared without a trace. I have over 900k in my bank....

    What happened?

You gotta put money on the vendors, not your bank.

Go to the house they were in and click sign and choose claim vendor inventory.

Takes a deep breath... woooosh... Ok, I feel better... Before I do that, I have to say that either I am way more dense than I thought I was - or that fact that you must immediately put gold on the vendor is NOT readily apparent when you place a vendor. I thought it took vendor percentages directly from your bank account... You mean I have to actually, physically drop a check on the vendor?

No you have to drop gold.
Best way around this is to price a bod in a bod book. This will allow you to set the price to however much you need and you can buy it with the same account.
Otherwise put a rune on the vendor at whatever price you'd like and use another account or friend to buy it to "stock" your vendor's bank.

PS when you click the vendor you will see a gump that will tell you what the charges per day are going to be and how many days you are paid up for. Make sure you put on enough gold to cover the cost until you get sales. Also make sure you set the vendor contract to renew if you are not owner of the house. You can set the renewal price to "0" so it wont cost you anything. (If the character placing the vendor is on the same account that owns the house you can skip that step)

Thank you so much for explaining this, Flutter. Has it always been this way? I mean - that you have to initially give the vendor gold? I saw where it said how much per day the cost would be (in the vendor gump) - but I assumed that the cost would be automatically withdrawn from the bank account of whoever placed the vendor....
That is not at all clear from what the gump says...
But now I know, and thanks again... I got all my refinement components back (I was really worried that I'd lost them, since they're the first things that I've acquired that apparently command a pretty steep price for now)...

Unfortunately yes it's always been this way.
You used to get the cost of the vendor as it's starting pay and back then the gold would go a lot further. But back then you weren't placing vendors and putting things worth hundreds of thousands or millions for sale so it actually lasted a lot longer.

I forgot to say since you're a new vendor owner you may misunderstand. Place the bod in the empty bod book. Price it for however much. When you place it on the vendor hit your ESC/escape key and the book itself will be priced as not for sale. Then you'll be able to open the book and buy the bod.
Also, most people tend not to bother with opening up lots of bags, so using the main pack of the vendor is always your best bet. But if you want to place a bag or box as not for sale and set a description, simply type a comma and the descriptive words after you place the box or bag.
    IE: , REFINEMENT COMPONENTS
This will tag the bag as "not for sale" and the line beneath will read "REFINEMENT COMPONENTS"
If you want to leave the bag with no description just hit the escape key after placing the box/bag. You can also place key rings as not for sale on vendors. All other items must be priced.
Double check your bags. If an error happens and you priced all the stuff in your bag but didn't make sure your bag was "not for sale" the bag will default to default vendor price (usually 4gp) and someone will be able to buy the entire bag for 4 gold. This applies to everything you place on your vendor really. Default vendor price is not a good way to make money ;)

Good Luck. If you have any more questions ask away. I am sure there's a few folks who have never placed a vendor that could benefit from your learning curve.

And of course they broke this like 10 publishes ago.

The vendor deed you bought for 1200 gold used to include like 1,000 gold prepaid. Now when you place the vendor - it has zero gold and you need to fund it immediately. Rental vendors start with the normal 1k.
    Broken, reported, never fixed.

I may be misremembering, it's been quite a while, but I think this is not a bug, but a deliberate and documented change.

This has been like this for a long, long, long time. Vendor contracts (beige) come with 60gp prepaid, enough to pay for one day with nothing on the vendor. the Red Rental Contracts come with enough prepaid to pay for 16 days with no stock on vendor. They should match and both come with the same amount. Either way its been like this forever.

As for startle, I'm glad you got your items back! Good luck with your vendors :)

Would be a nice update to vendor to have specific rental contracts that you can buy for a predetermined price to save the buying an item on a second account, or even a gump that has deposit gold(from the bank). That is middle school, but instead we are supposed to dual client to get gold in there or ask a friend..seems a bit silly no?

No I seriously think we all need remember some players have never had vendors..
It would have been nice years ago to have a visual tutorial on something like Youtube style for Stratics. Where a clear voice can instruct in the ways of doing normal day things like set up a vendor and explain how to "feed" one. The visual of the game showing all the steps and ways to place them as well. This would be good for a lot of things new and old player alike need to know. How to place a new boat and the commands.. Setting up the security on not just the boat but homes and secures..
You don't know how many calls I went on as a counselor that were of this nature.

Obviously, I would not be the best candidate for making a movie on stocking a vendor - but I could make one for some aspect of the game that isn't well understood and has poor documentation into a YouTube... I might just do that. Good idea Lady Storm - and you too should make one...
