Found one of my primary email inaccessible this morning, started running through other password sensitive stuff and discovered all acct passwords had been changed as well as my primary email for all uo accts, which I do really no other business on.

On hold now to see if I can get everything blocked.

Just a heads up for everyone. I do daily AV and spyware scans and updates, but something must have slipped past my system.

More info as I have it.

Primary email is through yahoo mail from sbcglobal. And yes I am on facebook.

This has nothing to do with UO. If you have been hacked, you should check your computer security, probably reinstall and never install any programs you do not trust 100%.

P.S.: Sorry that this happened to you! It sucks!

yahoo is the devil, and easy to break into. my advice to you is to change to a more secure email server.

I was hacked while using yahoo for my uo acct emails.

    good luck to you ::huggles::

*goes through erasing stuff from old posts*

Thanks for the reminder. Even though the accounts I have used here recently are new, disposable accounts that have nothing connected to them, I thought I might as well clean them up anyway.

Oh and to whoever sent me that "You won!!!" email that yahoo had pop up the subject line of, in my task bar, when it arrived .... don't hold your breath. I will never see that mail.

Okay, so my ability to compose proper sentences is eluding me. I will stop now. =)

Viquire, I hope everything turns out well for you.

Every dsl cable wireless internet provider provides email accounts with there services. My question is Why are people using places like yahoo hotmail etc for email When they already have an email they are paying for? You get about 5 to 7 extra email accounts with your account depending what company you use. I know my provider you need the account number if you call and say you forgot your main email account PW. If Someone calls and gives any of my personal info with out that number that someone is not getting into that account.
    For icq
Icq on top click main click options click on messages where it says files if its check uncheck all 3 of those boxes.
Then go to privacy click on that I have everything checked except share my status with icq and web users.

I see your point. For me, it's habit, I guess and convenience.

Anyone else remember back when hotmail was new? We thought is was cool because it was hot and had HTML in its name. =p HoTMaiL!

Many ISP email accounts are actually run by either yahoo, hotmail or google these days - the @ispname is just an alias. And in some places, ISPs routinely jack up prices on people who are "committed customers" - forcing people to switch ISPs from time to time.

When I got hacked in October 2005 it was through the e-mail that my cable provider provides (Cox). The hacker got my birthday and that was all they needed to get the idiot people at Cox to give them my password. NEVER again will I use my internet service provided e-mail for anything important.

I now use my work e-mail which I am the sole administrator for. No one can call and say they are me and they forgot the password. I also try to never have my e-mail show or any other personal information other than possibly the state I live in.

It's sad that you have to be so guarded because there are people (I use that term loosely for these kind of people) who refuse to work for anything, instead steal what others have worked hard for.

In almost 10 years of having a yahoo account associated with my UO accounts, I've had zero issues.

Most of the "hacks" I've seen are from people who have lent out their accounts or done other risky behaviors(ie accepting files from unknown people... "guildmates" or not).

Running without a firewall(software or otherwise) and anti-virus is not the brightest of ideas.

Going to questionable websites(UO, file sharing, or otherwise) is also not the brightest of ideas. And using a "critical" email address with any of those is fool hardy.

I use a dummy email for UO accounts as well as any websites that I visit. To further this, I use a separate email account for EACH UO account and EACH website:coco:

I don't use/have an email associated with my ISP. Too easy to backtrack that.

I've also made it so my email provider will only give me account related information if I show up in person. NO online or phone related account changes/access for me.

Unfortunately sometimes that's how we learn what not to do. I would never have thought that could happen to me, but it did. So now I try to let people know that it is a possibility so they can make appropriate changes if needed. I played for 8 years before I got hacked. Hopefully it will never happen to you.

make your password questions something bogus if you're going to use something like yahoo. that's the only way people "hack" their way in. when it asks what your first pets name was, tell it your favorite food. the same w/ your uo account. you don't have to like it to a legit email account, just make it something bogus like "[email protected]". if you actually forget your password, and you opened the account with legit information, you'll have no problem getting in contact w/ the provider directly and recovering it (email/uo account, etc.)

sorry for you loss. im sure most if not all of your stuff is gone.

On another note, is there a way that a end user can protect him/herself ?

I mean, how to know if and when an e-mail server is really secure ?
How to know what firewall really blocks any and all intrusions ?
How to know that the anti-virus software really takes care of anything, even those nasty memory resident viruses or trojans ?

Different people have a whole lot of different opinions and some like some products and others like other products but I find it VERY hard, at least for me, to figure out what really is THE BEST mail server, THE BEST firewall product, THE BEST anti-virus product and so forth.

    At least, that's my dilemma.........

Always assume that any single system can be compromised and work your way from there. And most of the time, it's not external hackers - it just takes 1 disgruntled employee to extract data and carry it out of the office to decrypt at his leisure or leave a time delayed program on the server.

Unfortunately, as long as you have a connection to the internet, or info stored on the internet, there is no perfect software/hardware that will guarantee 100% protection. There are no email servers that are 100% secure. There are no anti-virus programs that can weed out every single type of virus there are.

There is the next best thing, or better ones. Just google and do a bit of research, esp on reviews. As you said, different people have different opinions and it often requires normal users to be practially IT experts to even understand what these people are talking about. Find something that you are comfortable with.

Ultimately, the best defense is youelf. Try to learn more on how to prevent stolen accounts or even identity theft. I recommend reading the sticky on account security tips if you have not done so.

Also remember, the more secure you make something, it inversely comes at the sacrifice of convenience. There's no 2 ways about it.

eg having 1 email for all your UO accounts/icq/facebook etc etc is definitely convenient, but is very very risky. Having multiple dedicated emails for every single thing is alot more secure, but means you have to remember a ton of IDs or passwords.

This includes the timeout complaint you had with disabling cookies to remember passwords.

The absolute BEST protection is to unplug your computer from the net:coco:

From there, there is NO such thing as best:thumbsup:

I've run AVG and zonealarm for over 8 years with no issues. And most reports I read claim Norton and Macafee are GARBAGE.

Running a hardware firewall is fine and dandy but if you aren't checking logs and keeping it updated, you are fooling yourself that it is doing something serious.

Changing passwords on a semi-regular basis is good as is making the password hard: aka numbers, letters, AND special chars in it, at least eight characters, and no words. Eight seems to be the magic number because some systems don't support passwords more than eight chars. Sure you can enter more than eight but everything but the first eight is discarded:thumbsup:

Most UO hackers are just kiddies thinking they are cool and not "true" hackers. Anything that takes them any amount of work will not be done. So while you can never be 100% secure, if you are 80% secure, you are good against UO hackers.

Another thing I've read mentioned is the fact that most people run their Windows in Admin mode. There is NO reason for that. Admin account should be for installing programs only.

As mentioned above by me and others, I run separate email accounts for everything I do: websites, UO accounts, etc. Each thing gets a different email. I do this for two reasons: for security and to track where I'm getting spam from.

As I mentioned above, I get my mail through a local ISP that is separate from my internet service. I further told my ISP to make a HUGE note next to my account to only do things concerning the account in person. No phone calls of "I forgot my password" etc. It costs me extra a month and can be a hassle but it prevents that method of getting hacked.

Going to questionable sites is a big issue. Whether it is UO related, software pirating, or music stealing, you put yourself at risk going to any of those sites.

Accepting and running ANY files or going to websites given to you from someone in UO. Doesn't matter if it is a guildmate or not. VERY risky behavior.

Lending out your accounts is also a HUGE risk. Again guildmate or not, you shouldn't do it. I would only consider lending my accounts to a RL friend I can walk over to and punch in the face when something goes wrong:thumbsup:

I would venture that people who are getting UO hacked have done one of the previous things in 99% of the cases.

It takes work to be secure. It takes inconvenience to be secure. Because of this, most people will never be secure and will leave themselves open to being hacked:loser:
