Lately there has been much debate regarding our shard; one question in particular that has been thick on the tongues of many citizens would have to be “Is Oceania on its last legs?” What more, is the very game itself dwindling away?
Are the doomsayers correct? Or is the spirit of the community still alive and well? Are we really just a shard of Luna bank sitters or do people have other, more engaging pastimes?

But not all talk has been negative, the recent introduction of the Abyss Housing and Ricardo quests seems to have drawn many 'absent' players out of their hideaways. Is this enough? What more could be done?

Armed with a quill and several rolls of parchment I set off to Luna to put these questions before the player base, so all would have a chance to hear the voices of the people.

How active do you perceive the Oceania shard to be?

40-50 active accounts. I think people are active, just because you don't see them in Luna doesn't mean they don't play.
    - Evolution

Not very. Just a few wondering how many inhabitants will need to leave before we are permanently evicted.
    - Aerona

I see people commenting on the forums 'The population is bigger than it was so many months ago' etc. I'm in two minds about this. In general the shard appears empty, but when the Ranger of the Abyss quest was operating everyone came out of the woodwork.
I think Oceania's biggest problem isn't lack of population, it's lack of community. There is little/no community spirit present on the shard.
    - Vahran

There are enough people, we don't need tonnes.
    - Kurack

Inactive and quiet but more active than it has been for the past two years and on what seems a slight increase. There are quite a few key community members gone, which makes it appear more 'dead' than it really is. The few that tried to spark community actions.
    - Dain

It's just right for me. Not too busy.
    - Thorn

What is your favourite in game pastime?

At the moment I'm enjoying having a look at all the new content.
    - Maelgwn

Although they are fairly quiet these days, I enjoy the EM events. Other than that, I'm turning into a gypsy hunter.
    - Vahran

    Role-playing my old Orcish character.
    - Revolution

Role play. But there are exactly zero role players about. The last major Role-player left for Baja.
    - Aerona

PvP or solo PvM. Actually... I forgot that PvP doesn't exist anymore of late.
    - Dain

Events where all players have to unite to achieve something. Be it a quest, monsters etc. It is probably the only time players are unified because everyone is playing for a common purpose.
    - Lady Aurora

Have you participated in the recent Abyss Housing/Ricardo quests? What is your opinion of them?

    Abyss Housing: Yes. Ricardo: No.
Not too bad for a MMO quest. A little better than "Go kill me ten of this!" or "Fetch ten of that! Take me to there!"
    - Evolution

I have been following them, although neither religiously nor closely. They're good and certainly promote activity in game. But they falter in the 'community' aspect, they in no way require you to even acknowledge another player's presence. They're not 'team' events which is disappointing. I found myself motivated only during the early phases. I have many accounts, I gain all the possible rewards early on and then lose interest.
    - Dain

I did both quests on all characters, they were okay. The housing one went well for my guild. The Ricardo once was a bit repetitive, just trawling each character to all the spots over and over.
    - Thorn

Yes, both of them. Very addictive, I did both quests on multiple characters.
    - Julia

Yes, whilst they provide a short distraction, they are not really all that different.
    - Aerona

Ricardo, yes. It wasn't too bad, though I am hoping there is more to it. It'd be good to have some use for all those strange words.
    - Maelgwn

I did participate, though not the Ricardo one so much. Dare I say same stuff different day?
I much prefer some of the other events we've had. Where all players unite for the off chance of gaining an item. Because unfortunately that is all anyone cares about.
    - Lady Aurora

In your personal opinion, what could be implemented to improve the game?

Increase the artificial intelligence of monsters, make them "smarter"
    - Revolution

Local advertising. Without more people playing it will never improve.
    - Aerona

I'd like to see more variety in bosses. As in bosses you need different character types to kill... rather than always using tamers.
    - Maelgwn

Do something about the EM events. I miss most of them as I don't know about them. They should run for a week instead of a one hour deal that no one knows about, that way everyone can participate.
    - Kurack

I missed out on some of the previous big events while away from the game. I would like to see something like the invasions brought back, more well thought out challenging events.
    - Thorn

I'd like to see more local people play. I don't ever see UO advertised anywhere. I think those that play on this shard in particular are either returning players or children of people who played in the beginning . Very, very rare to find an absolute new person, which is unfortunate.
    - Lady Aurora

There are four aspects I would implement:
    1) Modernise the system so your RL location doesn't affect which server you have to play on.
Such a change might have a negative effect on Oceania but a positive one on UO as a whole.
    2) Implementation of a variety of classic shards as suggested, Pre-AoS, pre Pub 16 etc.
    3) A much more active in game event system. More Event Moderators so there are ADVERTISED events most nights that encourage participation and teamwork.
    4) Advertise the game, I think the last box set I saw of UO was the 10th anniversary one. I play pretty much every MMO out there these days, and it's difficult finding someone that has even heard of UO. Pretty much all the 'new' players to UO are just old players returning after many years break.
    - Dain

I would like to thank everyone who took the time to speak with me, your time and munificence was greatly appreciated.

Gotta be waaaaaaaaaay more than that, I myself have access to 8 accounts, 7 of which are active, 4 of which are mine, the other 4 I am the caretaker of. If you're figures were accurate I would be almost 1/5th of Oce's entire population

I'm thinking somewhere in the range of 150-250 active accounts at any one time. Not all those accounts would be 'used' (some would be holding up houses and nothing more), but I think 50 active is way too small a number. 250 is still a very small number when you consider there is somewhere between 50,000-100,000 active accounts for UO overall.

Oce was much closer to it's 'last legs' about 2 years ago than it is now. Now it is not even close if you compare it to back then. It confuses me that people are suggesting this now when the game has not been in better shape in years. UO is on the up and up. Oce's population is growing again (slowly) and if you go and look at some of the other shards the idea that the "game itself is dwindleing away" is laughable!! Go and look at Yamato, Asuka, Sakura, Pacific, Great Lakes, Atlantic etc... the game is far from dying!

That is because 90% of the 'PvPers' (for lack of a better term) are on the same side (Minax). There would be MUCH more PvP if the Feluccan player base was spread out more evenly.

ATM we have 2 guilds with maybe 2-3 active PvPers (OPK and TAFE) and a few guilds all on the same team with god-knows how many newbs getting their zerg on.That is fine if you guys need the numbers, but don't you guys complain about not having PvP when it is largely your fault.

OPK is also in a rebuilding phase, some of our newer members and one of our vets left to make more PvP (something some of 3T/GIMP etc... should think about doing if they want more PvP), a couple of our members are taking a break from the game to deal with RL stuff and the rest of us are starting to play more and you should see more of us within the next few weeks.

After studying the threads on this very forum for inspiration on my question design, debate over Oceania’s population was a constant, recurring topic.
This report consists of the gathered personal opinions of people I interviewed in game. They are not set facts by any means, but this is what people believe.
You disagree with the answers? Fine, take the survey yourself next time instead of just being another addition to the ‘Luna bank sitters’ stereotype.

  7. Dain

    Dain Guest

The report is excellent, even if the results conflict or there can be no firm conclusion it's good to see some iniative beyond Despise Rats or Luna Banksitting!

I think it's really hard to comment on 'population', especially in regards to its growth/decay. It fluctuates drastically, but all in all, I think RIGHT NOW, we're part of an increase.

1997-2001: Substantial Growth and UO development

2001-2005: Stable growth with significant UO development

2005-2007 (late): Significant population decay. Little to no game development.

2007 - Current: Slow increse with very little game development.

It always has been on this forum, but that isn't surprising. From reading this forum you could easily be forgiven for thinking the shard is dead.

Yes and I am telling you what I believe. What is your problem with that?

I don't need to take a survey, you have already done that. I was simply telling you the way I see it. What is your problem with that?? Yes I disagree with some of the answers, why did you bother posting this thing if you didn't want to hear people's views on it? You only interviewed 6 people! Don't you want to know what other people think about it?

  9. Lady_Kat

    Lady_Kat Guest

I actually interviewed more than six people; the names on the article alone add up to ten. And quite a few people did not wish to comment/want their observations published.
I welcome the views of others on all of my reports and I thank you for offering your opinion on the article topics, it just seemed to me they were stated in a rather contemptuous and disparaging manner.

and myself personally have gotten better since I left OPK, maybe the fact that I HAD to or die to the masses of OPK(at the time) and Minax/3t. Something I dont regret doing.

Recently training in stealth I walked the entire world. Also seeing my UO Map no longer seemed to log houses automatically I took the opportunity to log every house I came across. Yes it did my brain in. This was about a fortnight ago. I found 194 houses in Malas, 345 in Trammel, and 210 in Fel. About 750 .... given a 10% margin of error after 3 red wines we could say we still have between 700 and 800 houses therefore accounts, on the shard. How many are active is of course another matter.

6, 10, still a small number. For each question you only got 6 replies except for one which has 7.

Well I think you have misunderstood then. I wasn't trying to be nasty, I was simply giving my own opinions on some of the questions you raised. After 13 years of people predicting the demise of UO it has become slightly amusing whenever someone does it these days, especially since the game (as I said before) has not been in better shape in years. In fact UO has not been in better shape since OSI was around.

If this is true (which I have my doubts about and will make my own judgments on based on how you go in game) then I think there are probably 3 reasons for it: you are no longer able to depend on your guild mates to do the work for you, the better suits you have now thanks to imbuing, and the fact that we haven't been round much lately to kick yer ass! :p

...oh and I don't ever remember us having 'masses' of OPK... 5 would be the most we have had on at once in quite awhile and that was only a couple of times.

That's interesting and would of been quite an effort lol. Did you check Tok too? Probably at least 50 houses there I would say.

Based on those figures the number of active accounts is probably higher than 250, maybe 400ish? Very hard to tell because many of those houses would be on inactive accounts that are only reopened every 3 months. There would also be the xsharders who play on Oce often but don't have a house on the shard.

All in all, I don't think things are nearly as bad as some people may have thought.

The numbers claim is getting old, 3T have 5 active PvPers in total, 2 of which I never see.

How could we split, if me and Held made our own guild; the only person around to fight would be Wishes once or twice a week, and on the rare occasions I don't have school the next morning and I'm on late, I might be able to stay up to midnight when Warlord logs on and have a fight :/

Oh and then TAFE and OPK will outnumber both sides of the 3T split as well.

Not a very viable option IMO, especially considering our alliance goes beyond UO, and especially beyond Fel.

It was Sneak, I did in a pair of perfectly good sand shoes but did get to 80 stealth. Sorry I missed including Tokuno .... 44 houses. So grand total, given the margin of error mentioned before about 750 to 850 houses. Didn't do some of the smaller islands in Tram and Fel so there could be some socially isolated pirates Ive missed.

    Nice report.

It's always interesting to hear opinion, although I do wonder what you need to do to be considered a "major roleplayer" on Oceania.

** Sorry.. this is pvp related so if ur not interested just ignore... or u can read it bcz well it does benefit every1 because it allows for people to enter the pvp field without too much grief**

I've said this years ago... There is too much rivaly in Ocieania... people should just set aside their differences and make even number guilds... skill level mm... ok it shouldn't be TOOO imbalanced but enough just so their is a proper fight. This has happened before.. there r 3 major guilds... 1 with the people who outskill every1... another which is mediocre.. and a third which is in a sense "zerg". Why not just make 4 guilds... even out the players... and all make join a massive guild war with a few rules. Based on my feeling.. seems like most ppl just want a fight..... its not really oo haha i stole ur spawn... those days died with TC/OPK... with a limited population it shouldn't b that hard to organize a system. With Atlantis or Europa.. u have 100s of people fighitng.. pretty hard to set rules.. but with Ocieania this is possible and is prolly one of the benefits of having a small population shard... plus no fricken loser ppl can come "shard rading" bcz their pings suck so much they go home and cry after 2 days...

    i.e:
    1. if u r wearing a death robe... no pking.. bcz chances r they r either busy with their own stuff or r afk.
    2. No looting (doesn't effect uo now adays as much with LRC etc.. but this was how it was done in the past)
    3. No res killing
    4. Maybe XXday is a night every1 knows is massive pvp night so every1 hopefully puts in some effort into logging on that day.
    5. Maybe make a town a fighting arena.. Britain (west) or moonglow.. for all the oldies... dun u ever wish u could go back to those days where u would fight order/chaos all around town? teleporting through gates of moonglow... running around the buildings of West Brit? knowing ur little tricks on how to escape a gank (teleporting from wbb roof to the music store etc...)

If ocieania's pvp someone picks up even i'd come back... bcz lets face it.. there is no other MMORPG that matches this even though i think it sucks compared to old UO but its still a lot better than fricken WoW... Eve i personally dun want to be a space ship... might as well have a MMORPG where i am a potato with a gun... -_-.

Because they're aren't enough people to make 4 guilds, unless we want want 1-2 person per guild, which I for one don't.

Right now the guilds are actually pretty equal, 3T and TAFE generally fight with 2-3 per side, and OPK don't really exist.

    I think you're onto something!

    Potato's with guns!

If we market it to say the early teens in America/UK, I'm pretty sure this game would easily beat WoW!

    Correction needs to be made

TAFE doesnt havent any active members at the moment. We have decided to have a short break from UO, since it has become extremely boring and repetitve for us.

We are playing Darkfall atm. People who havent tried it, should. its similar to old school UO. pvp anywhere, and 100% lootable. Seems alright so far, and I still have my 24 hour newbie protection on.

As much as it appears like that. Its not. The only time i have found some pvp recently, is by spawning and getting crashed after advertising it. or by crashing and once the spawn has been completed most log.... :( But I would be all for a system, hell, even a day or 2 a week we say yes lets trying and pvp here all right..

Darkfall was awesome, for about 6 weeks.

You'll find the game amazingly unbalanced.

Unfortunately, the whole game is orientated around either epic grinding, or severe abuse of 3rd party programs in order to even be able to compete.

Since there is no real skill cap, you'll find you really are months behind in training hours to all the hardcore players. It's either a short term game, where you have no delusions about competeing in 'end game' situations any time soon, or a long term game where you're willing to spend your first few months of play doing nothing but training and harvesting.

The PvP options seem like great ideas, I would be all for it; but activety just took another dive on our end with Wishes declaring his leave for the next few months, so it doesn't seem very viable atm.

On the bright side, welcome back DubZio and thank you for sponsoring my HoN account, now I have another reason not to play UO :D

count me out for a while too. Tried to log in during the darkfall server down time, only to find my computer crashes everytime the client tries to load... i also found that if the computer isnt running in full screen mode(like css or df) the gfx card throws a tantrum that can rival my gf and freezes or crashes :-(
