Two shards seem to have started going into the wider arc by introducing Mors Gotha + various other references to the Guardian into their events.

The main question would be, how can the Guardian exist in our version of Britannia? How do you all think the end up explaining it?

Honestly a bit disappointed they aren't bringing back Minax before going into a Guardian storyarc.

What's a story arc? Does it give me more DCI?

Would rather have Minax back, it's been too long. Minax is defeated or whatever and factions is over with Order/Chaos replacing it.

Just because a couple of EMs include that part of Ultima Prime lore does not mean it's universal - after all, several years ago some EMs had to deal with uncomfortable questions about the Book of Truth/Candle of Love/Bell of Courage arc, because their predecessors in that role used them in EM arcs that just plain COULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED AS PLAYED if the stories of the big global arc were the canon version of those items' history on the shard.

I wouldn't make anything of it, unless those tidbits start showing up on uoherald/uo/com official fiction....

GL started their introduction with Mors Gotha quite a bit ago. I have never known Em Tiberies/Claudius (Now of Catskills) to copy another EM, and has recently also introduced Mors Gotha (Dressed exactly the same).

The same theme of these events, are far too similar to other events running on multiple shards concerning the void/other worlds.

There have been several cases where EM's worked together and ran several versions of the same events on different shards, simply to allow themselves to "go big" from not having to do everything themselves. Don't assume.

Depends on how they swing it.

The Guardian was originally described as belonging to an ancient race of galactic conquerors. That's much more in line with his motives and the numerous worlds he had conquered leading up to Ultima VIII: Pagan. In Ascension, that was all retconned to make him the Avatar's evil doppleganger.

Then there is always the line from the Borg Blackthorne introduction where claims he was meant to be the "guardian of this world."

Its been a long time but wasn't the Abyss server conquered (and destroyed) by the Guardian. If so he was introduced a long time ago as a possible villian.... Lord British leaving Britannia to enter the void also hinted that a being like the Guardian threatened the land and he left to keep it from threatening the land..

Of course it could have been Blackthorn after faking his death and then patiently waiting for his chance to claim the throne when things were chaotic... then planting a disease and providing the cure to gain support - but maybe Lore's just a crazed conspiracy theorist or maybe Britannia has been getting played for years.

You're probably joking, and in 15 years I have NEVER (not even once) cried doom for this game that just won't die; but I also think EA knows the only way to minimize a PR black eye would be to send the game off with a respectable bang. In case you're not out there in other games and if you don't keep up with the gaming press, you might not realize just how unforgettable this game is. Gaming magazine writers who haven't subscribed in years still reminisce and still compare RPGs to UO, sparking long debates in comments and forums. People would be sorely upset at EA if they heard UO was closing, and that's not something that can be said about most old games.

So, the above is as close as I've ever come to saying "doom".

But what if it's quite the opposite? The Guardian represents as many possibilities for an "end game" as it does threats. The Avatar won't be around to fight the Guardian's schemes, so might it be us who would travel to Pagan? If the Guardian's introduction doesn't herald the end of the game, it might still herald one last big expansion. EA has clearly expressed interest in growing the storied franchise. Just for the record, I wouldn't put much stock in this scenario, but who knows?

Of course, there's a little "doom" potential here, too. Historically speaking (and as backward as this sounds), there's another reason why people have speculated big publishers will sometimes dump one last truckload of money on a studio for an aging game: because they expect it to close regardless. Two or three years later, when subscriptions and item sales still haven't produced profitable targets, the fans and the studio can't really blame the publisher with hard data. As wasteful as that seems, it may be the smallest price and cleanest way for EA to extricate itself from publishing duties. It keeps the publisher clear and on target in the books and with their board of directors and shareholders: "The studio or property performed poorly (not for lack of everyone's effort) and was shut down."

The bright side is, such an extrication doesn't actually fit in line with EA's renewed interest in the franchise, unless they want to replace UO with a sequel. (Granted, that interest seems minimal compared to some of the other IPs in its stable, but it's still there.) So maybe an endgame for UO represents an "Ascension" of some kind, either for Ultima Online itself or an actual successor to the MMORPG. There are a million and one ways to speculate on that, but we can at least be sure that the reasons EA pulled the plug on past UO sequels wouldn't be a concern today. (They were concerned that a sequel would cannibalize UO's healthy subscriber base.)

The most likely scenario in my opinion? None of the above. It takes so few resources to run and maintain UO compared to other MMOs, they could keep the game on life support forever. There is already tons of things for players to do in UO and there always would be.

Personally, I think UO is more likely to close when developers lose interest, not EA. If there comes a day when the studio or publisher can't find devs who would be interested in working on a 16 year-old game (or 20, or 25, or 30...), then EA will be forced to close the game at that point. So if you really love UO, maybe you should learn to program or design graphics.

According to Richard Garriott, the Guardian had always been intended as the Avatar's "evil twin", ever since Ultima VII. Source:

    http://sota.ultimacodex.com/interview-with-richard-garriott/

Concerning the Guardian in UO, there are several ways to explain his presence in the Shards. I can think at least of these:

    - he's exactly the same Guardian from the single-player Ultima games, i.e. the "evil twin" of the Avatar of the single-player games. This Guardian is well known as a world traveller, so it's not unreasonable to think that he found a way to "enter" the Shards from the world of Ultima Prime.

    - every Shard has its own, independent copy of the Guardian, formed from the coalescence of the "evil side" of every person in Britannia rather than from a single person.

Promathia posed this question to his own Event Moderators:

    http://stratics.com/community/threa...urn-of-the-knights-of-the-crux-ansata.297342/

and the answer would appear to be a no on the Guardian and a no on Mors Gotha being the next global arc.

    We'll see.

I would not assume that The Guardian means the end of UO, this supposition appears to be in the air due to The Guardian ending the Beta.

Since then, we have better gear, and 15 years' experience to improve our chances.

Why do I suddenly feel like I'm at a nerd Star Trek convention rationalizing how the Warp Drive works?

    A not inaccurate analogy.

It bewilders me why anyone who plays this game does not realize that he or she is, by definition, a nerd.

    No, no, no...!
Wing Commander didn't have Warp Drives. It had Jump Drives!
And there is a Kilrathi ship at Ultima VII. It is on a field east of Britain.

I know I looked everywhere at UO but didn't find it, which saddened me greatly. :(
