A few years ago I decided to make an archer/tamer and trained the archery up to about 107. I stopped and got sidetracked doing other things and recently decided to finish up her template. With my archery at 107.5 I decided I'd like to take it to 120. So, I got myself a golem, 100% poison bow, a buncha arrows and started whacking. Its been about two hours and I have not gotten a single gain, other than my guaranteed daily gain on the first hit. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.. the golem is GM made with a wrestling of 98, so it is within 20 points. I am outside the guard zone, and have tried both guilded and unguilded with no success. After a while I just got tired of it and decided to work it up the old fashioned way and went to kill some blood elementals. I killed them for a while and did not got any gains either. I am now trying the golem again but I'm not have much luck. I am at my 720 skill points cap, but I have a few skills set to go down so that archery can increase. Does anyone know what I could be doing wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

getting discoed will just enable you to gain off of a lower end golem.
if her golem allready has 98 wrestle then its not a problem of being within the right range for training.

ill bet if you go to fel and try it there it will work.

come to the fel side..... we have cookies!

you have to be in a guild or in fel to use a golem and gain.

    thats not 100% true.
some people are able to gain in tram facets with a golem while in a guild.
    but some people cant.
i personally have never been able to, but i have two guildmates that can.

and i see a lot of people at the luna area training, so im assuming they are gaining there too.

im not sure what the split is.

just one of those odd UO things i guess.

The "secret" to golem training is very simple. you must be guilded in tram (or non guilded in Fel) and MUST be within 25 points of the golems Wresting and tactics skills, for you to gain your weapon and Tactics skills, respectively. Period, end of story. If you need to know what your golem is at, get a 110 Lor, tamer to tell you.

Additional (to dispel one more myth) a "GM" made golem does not have GM skills, they can be as low as 80 or so, even from a GM tinker, Moral of the story, get a tamer friend to lore the golem, or put it in a trade window and check it's skills!

Personaly i never understood why people train on a golem. I rather spend time in a dungeon shooting and whacking things. :)

and myabe 3 years from now you'll end up in an area that other people visit :)

Besides, all the good dungeons to do that in have been "revamped" now and it's hard enough to survive on a full 120'd char...couldnt imagine attempting to train in there with less.

I seen more places then anyone who standing with his face for hours against a golem. I also learned to use my characters skills and learn what his strength and weakness. And instead of changing my skills to everyone flavor of the month when things change on a publish, I still have my templates in a old school way. Pure warrior is my favorite character. No Chivalry, No Bushido just 100% pure. And to contrary what people think its the character i play best with.
I even use it in the void pool and I'm one of the top ranking.
I learned his limits with fighting in all dungeons.

And maybe you might want to learn first fighting on land then dive into the depths of a dungeon when you are a young character.
And the revamp of covetous is now perfect to get your skills into shape. The first parts have no aggressive monsters. You can take one Harpy at a time or headless or vampire mongbat.

    After 14 years i htink i know what i'm talking about. ;)

My main is a pure archer w/ detect, tact/anat/arch/heal/resist/detect/focus, it takes a lot of strategy outside of macro mashing but it's easily one of the overall highest damaging "classes" in the game.

the mongbats are so low level you can't gain on them past around 30, the harpys too high level you can't gain on them below 70'ish (you'd want to be around 85 or you'll never really hit them though) that's hardly training a "new" character.

Until around level 40 or so the void pool is pretty patheticly easy for a trained character, but for a new character while you "can" train on it if you hang out for more than a few waves you're going to be running in and out of the dungeon ressing every 10 minutes. we've raided it a few times and the monsters don't hit high enough below that level to even be a concern, and my pvp weapon kills them in one to two hits

Here's a challenge, if you DONT think training is an unbelievably boring grind with nobody around to see these days, train a character from newly created without items/help from your existing connections/supply. I'm going to need to train up fencing soon so i can get rid of using UBWS on all my weps when using forks and absolutely loathe the idea, as I know it means either I spend months grinding it up while not being able to do anything with guildmates or buying 1-2 more soulstones so i can swap it off when we actually want to fight something worth the time. (the golem trick "works" but isn't really effective past 70 skill on siege since the gains are timed anyways)

That is exacly what i do al lthe time. New characters can only use the items they find themself on monsters and dungeon. I only make them a new suit when they have there skills GM. Not before that. they have to earn it!
Training is not a Grind , only if you make one of it. Peope lost the sense of adventuring.

    Here is my latest character:

You realy think a character would look like this if it got access to 14 years experience /crafters and items? Doubt it. It is just junked he picked up from the dungeons he been training in. Gathering a little gold he has for insurance. even taking the nightsight potions from the ettins in Despise to be able to see.

Golem bashing IS boooooooooooooooooooring to me. :p

Do your archery training in the fel dungeon Khaldun on the tenticals in there. Its 10X faster than doing a golem. Just be sure to take 2-3k of arrows so you dont have to run in and out to restock. Ohh and use magical short bow that nice and fast so you gain nice and fast

Nobody sits there 100% focusing on the golem they're training on...that's the point of using a golem, it's so you can watch tv or play something else while you whack him a zillion times on your other screen/laptop/small window then when you start playing UO you can actually do things with other people and not the equivilant of grinding a dungeon Diablo 1 style by yourself over and over.

Most of us don't find it fun fighting trash mobs for hours and hours at end, especially with the knowledge that looting them is essentially pointless as when you hit 120 you'll make more in a single kill than all of the creatures you've killed up to that point combined dropped. (Also, is that the royal leggings of embers you're wearing or just glitched out boots?...weird how the legs look all glitchy in EC, i can't tell what's boot/pants/etc) But then I never liked fighting monsters at all anyways, my first dexxer i trained entirely by sparring other players and pvp, suiting up using gold earned by escorting other players along roads (back before the "whiff a zillion times befor you hit" patch when you could effectifly train with other players). After they pretty much broke that when I trained on siege I had to do the incredibly boring grind of killing skeletons/brigands/ettins/lizardmen/earth eles/solen/ and generally just jewel up and let the last 10 gain while out with guildies.... It probably took about 100 hours of playtime to get to 115 skill. (though on other shards it would have "only" taken 30-40 hours ingame time to 120 that way). You say sense of adventure but what's the point...theres no loss on death and it's not so much a challenge as just patience and moving slowly,

If i wanted to solo grind though a dungeon I wouldn't be playing a MMO...asking a new player to do that sounds like a great way to get people to quit the game shortly after playing...it's not 1998 anymore, theres NOTHING worthwhile to do on a dexxer under GM skill (semi-exception for mage because once you can cast blade spirits somewhat reliably you can be semi effective at most spawns). Do we really want new player's first experience in the game to be EITHER one of these options? Sit nearly afk at a golem or go play a single-player-like D1 grind in a dungeon nobody visits? I honestly think with the ramping of damage/skills on the mobs this really needs to be addressed as I do see a LOT of new players getting completely turned off and bored of the game when they learn how much grind they need to do before they can hang out with anyone....Possibly even a simple loot table bump on existing mobs would make the dungeons more worthwhile for newer players but they CANT bump the monster strength to go along with it...that just turns it into yet another soon-to-be-unused high level grinding spot like shame.

Since the Shame revamp I went from 110 to 120 Archery on Clay Golems and Mud Elementals on Level 2. The spawn is fine, the gain rate is okay and there is junk to unravel for imbuing use.

back on topic though, you weren't gaining because you need to have 'potential" to damage something to gain weapons skill in that matter (which is why guilded in tram or just do it in fel matters). Your gains will be slow with a golem like that though as your skill is too high, yes you still "can" gain as you're within 20 skill points of it but it won't be ideal, ideally you want it to be about the same as your level. If you're confident on your kiting ability or have access on your shard to the houe there the lesser hiryu is actually a pretty ideal mob to train on at your level, it should give you even somewhat faster gains than the tentacles of the harrower (but it also moves so you either need better timing to kite them around while shooting or just get one hooked on a porch, the lower the damage the bow does the better so if possible stone off anat & tactics)

I just took at paladin with about 80 in all key skills into Wrong to kill squatters and defenders. No real problem and I managed to end up with a suit of artifacts all 70, 100% lrc, with all stats over 100. Plus replacements for every piece. If I take off any piece, I'm still over all 70 s. Some may say the items will break, but they last many hours and when they finally bust, I just get another.

Oh and I got gold. Enought to start buying scrolls.

Just stay near the entrance and farm them lizards. people come through all the time. Not boring at all. Boring is whacking a golem while you watch tv.

Arwen, you might want to try yamotso warriors near the Homare Jima gate to get your archer from where you are now (108 or so?) to 120.

For that skill level, Mud Elementals and Clay Golems in Shame level 2 is the way to go. They're slow, plentiful and have some decent loot.
Trained my archer there from 100 to 120 and I am doing the same with my fencer/macer now.

This if you can't bother with healing the golem, are worried about being AFK or something else. Why one would bother with not rolling 120 if you have the choice I'll never understand. The lack of "end gaming" I read about on these boards boggles my mind.

This! Exactly. Mine runs around in looted armor. Way above 70s. And took my time and swapped out till now none of it is -100 luck, some is even + luck. Plus I always carry a complete set of replacements, so as it wears out/breaks, I just toss another one on. And keep the next one I find as loot to take its place. Perfect fun, and its just like the old days, equip as you go. And what I don't wear, makes excellent unravels. Nice gold, good fame too.

Shame, and parts of Wrong, they finally got right ;) The jury, for me anyway, is still out on Covetous, but we shall see.
