    Hi everyone,

First, please let me address a rumor that someone has been spreading. This Chesapeake festival has been planned for a long time. Whoever is spreading around that "they [the Jubilee folks] had this planned first before you guys and so you guys posted Chesapeake in retaliation" simply doesn't know what they're talking about.

The first conversations about Chesapeake hosting another festival took place just after the Pacific fest in 2013. By the Europa fest, the plans were pretty solid that Chesapeake would host one in the first half of 2015. As of the last Toad Town Atlantic fest, it was pretty common knowledge that Chesapeake was scheduled to be held in 2nd quarter 2015, with Scribbles hosting Atlantic in fall 2015, then blend hosting on a Japanese shard again - either Asuka or Wakoku - in December 2015 or January 2016. One of the reasons for which I assisted with the recent Izumo festival was to gain first-hand experience before we hosted one ourselves.

The amount of time between the previous 20 festivals has averaged 3.9 months. The Jubilee is a rares fest in all but name. The people organizing the Jubilee would appear to have decided that it makes sense to have two rares fests only a month apart. Personally, and on behalf of the entire Chesapeake fest organizing committee, given the money and time involved for the hosts and staff of a festival, we disagree.

We from the Chesapeake fest committee are going to assume that the folks organizing the Atlantic Rares Jubilee simply were somehow unaware of our plans when they scheduled their festival. Scribbles no longer plans to host an Atlantic festival this fall. Therefore, for the health of the community, and in the hope that both festivals are successful, we have decided to reschedule the Chesapeake festival to that empty September slot.

Thanks for your time. We hope to see you in September!

    Brian

As an planned attendee of both events... I say anyone should host one whenever they want... there should be no community "approval". Host it and whoever comes, comes... although a festival the same week as another festival would best be avoided. There is a plethora of event items in UO and they used to be difficult to find for sale... then there was an increase in drops and a raised vendor max... and voila. You don't need x amount of people to "have fun" or "be successful". Stop worrying about what the rest of the community thinks and just make a festival that people will enjoy. The ones who want to come, will do so and the ones that don't... their loss.

The Jubilee was named as such, in hopes it WOULDN'T detract from the Rares Fest.

    1. We had no prior knowledge of Chesapeake's planning of a rares fest.
    2. In the last thread of players asking when the next fest was, Olcher was on point in saying we were in the midst of plans.
    3. Dating back to the last Atlantic Rares Fest, we had wanted to do this. If you all remember, I was vocal back then about who was in charge and the shard. Many people suggested, that if I did not like the current state of Rares Fests, that I should just do it myself. I looked into various smaller shards, but nothing ever materialized. We decided, for our first time, to try our best on Atlantic. It was always my intention to do this AFTER Izumo, as Asian fests are important, nor did I want to detract from that.
    4. We are a group of friends who want to make sure we do this before anything happens to the game. When you are playing a game this old, its hard to do the waiting game for some things.

Obviously, after having discussions with multiple people, and even starting the process with Mesanna, we were taken off guard by the Chesapeake announcement. Our options were to either wait for a spot on the schedule (And judging by it, it looks like it goes into the next 2 years!), or to go ahead with our plans earlier than we intended. We chose to move forward, as waiting almost 2 years to do this just wasn't a chance we wanted to take.

My personal opinions about those involved with the Chessy Rares Fest did not effect our decision making process. Every person listed as Staff has been an integral part of the process, so honestly, I really hope people don't believe I could turn them into blind followers over something that seems so petty.

Rares Fest IS NOT about the most sales. Its about bringing the community together and celebrating this part of the game.

Someday this game will go away. To me, doing something special with the friends Ive made here comes before fitting into a schedule.

A quick question. Is there a difference between rares fest, player events or jubilees? If so please explain.

We wanted a new name. Its an exciting time for rares right now. more people are getting into the event system, prices are at a point where its not so intimidating to a new collector. Anyone can start up a new character on any shard and have a chance. Seeing that Atlantic does have the highest pop, and the trip to any other shard might be too daunting for someone just getting into collecting i think ATLC was a perfect choice at this point in time.

So thats the reason for the name Jubilee. its a "Jubilant" time for getting into the scene. Its fitting to have a new name to remove some of the stigma thats been associated with collecting, that its just a bunch of dug in, long time vets who post on stratics. Now, the staff of this event might fit that stereotype, but thats not who the event is being put on for. I'm hoping that many people in attendance will be those who might have never visited this page or considered rares collecting or EM events something they might be interested in having fun with.

I also was thinking from a few years ago, I do not want anymore committed to named rare Fest. However I had a proud in doing something as community party events
In anyway whatever its name, Fest, Jubilees. I'm glad that someone has the plan.

But, it is submitted here as a suggestion if you have a plan,
    Of and confirmation
do not have a plan for the day someone else is close to before turning on the date, you should be adjusted to each other the timing if you have.

    most important
Please check here if someone else does not have a plan
And because We should be there as a community to respect the plan of each other. Is not a small group, will be able

The name was changed to be respectful to the Rares Fest on Chesapeake.

I know, that as a member of the Chesapeake staff, you were upset by our plans. I do apologize for that, but again, our plans weren't created overnight just to spite you all. The best intentions are being put into all of this.

@Promathia Actually im not upset at all about you guys having another fest. It will be much more convenient for me to be on ATL as it is my home shard.
Im a little upset at the way certain members of the community handled the conflict but thats about it.

With that said, I was simply asking if there is definition difference between the 3. Rares fest, player event, jubilee?

I think it's a bit more than "player event" as we do have Mesanna's involvement, but since Chess had already posted a fest we talked about it more and decided to make it a yearly/annual "Jubilee' in addition to any "fests" that may happen. We truly were trying to avoid stepping on anyone's toes.

@Promathia The only motive seems to be no one can define what each of these things are or whether they are different and that is curious.

So for the 4th time, Is there a difference between the 3 types of events? Are they all the same?

Shouldn't all events go through the new PEC? Why should this event get special treatment now such a system is in place.

So if I run an event centered around selling EM and rare items I can expect support from the developers, but if I run any other kind of event, I will have to go through the PEC?

The Rares Fest for years has had some minimal support from Mesanna. Some others in the past have gone quite far with decorations as such, and we also didn't have the PEC back then.

I assure you all, I have been in discussions with the PEC. Our Jubilee is also trying to be minimal, and wont be requesting "decorations".

Since chessy cancelled/postponed/whatevered their rares fest. And this event was going to be called a jellybean or something rather so as not to pull attention from the "true" rares fest... Does that mean this event is now technically THE Rares fest? Or maybe something more fitting along the lines of, THE ALPHA RARES FEST?

Does it really matter, rares fest, rares jubilee, rares whatever, its all about people getting together for what they like best in UO, and any gathering rests on 2 things only, 50% on organizers, 50% on buyers / sellers, I am saddened Chessy organizers decided to cancel, instead of having it anyways, there is more then enough buyers and seller out there to accommodate a monthly gathering if that is what people even wanted......

    Enough Drama Queens!

My motives? I asked a simple question. You guys have each talked here about fests and the jubilee as if they are not player events. Flutter also stated, "No Mesanna still handles rares fests and the Jubilee. PEC is for player run events." Yet at different times here you have also suggested that a fest IS a player event. So which is it?

Personally, I consider a fest to be a player event. I do question the free houses being given in a no housing area; other fests have made that request, and it has been declined. Other fests have had to pay for game time to have house-holding accounts, and to place those houses in legal housing areas. This jubilee seems to be a player event, except when you want it not to be.

As for "When you are playing a game this old, its hard to do the waiting game for some things.", do you think other shards haven't waited their turn for a fest? Chessie did wait, over a year. I also do recall you being, as you say, "vocal back then about who was in charge and the shard". I also recall you saying you thought every fest should just be on Atlantic. So how do you think it looks when you have a fest that is being granted things other fests have not, is announced only days after Chesapeake's announcement, and is scheduled essentially on top of Chesapeake?

In any case, Chessie has rescheduled to accomodate your fest. Scribbles already had recently said that he wasn't going to go ahead with a fall Atlantic fest; your wait wouldn't have been 2 years, it would have been the same 5 months Chessie now faces. So while I won't be attending the jubilee, good luck to you.

I am not a rares collector. I would like to understand what is going to happen at the Jubilee versus any other rares fest that qualifies it as a "new concept." Also, what are you going to be doing to try to get new people into the rares community? Say I wanted to change my stripes all of a sudden and start collecting rares. What is the Jubilee going to include that other rares fests haven't included that's going to make me all of a sudden decide to go drop a bunch of RL cash on a gold broker so I can go nuts buying rares? I certainly don't have a lot of gold on Atlantic now and no means to get it there from another shard as I'm one of those people who hasn't played long enough to own even a single shard shield. And my buddies rarely play these days so I'm uninclined to try to track them down and pester them into doing transfers of a couple million gold to Atlantic for me. I kinda doubt that even if I could strip all the gold off every character I have that I'd have enough to buy even one rare. So what exactly is it that's going to happen at this event that might entice me to go nuts buying gold from a broker and then go to my first-ever auction or stand in front of a vendor and nervously decide to spend all that gold? How do I even know I would be buying something legitimate or that isn't going to be deleted somewhere down the road or changed into something that's relatively worthless? And given the current nebulous future of UO, something at least one of you has hinted at as a reason for holding this event in the near future, why would I extend myself financially like that??

You guys say you want to get more people involved with collecting rares but I really fail to see what you're going to do here that's going to change how I or anyone else like me currently feels about UO's rarest pixels. Also, given the hullabaloo over who is doing what and who is getting what kind of help from Mesanna or the PEC, it doesn't seem like this is a real celebration of friendship or camaraderie. It looks more like a case of one-upmanship, spite, and a whole host of other negative things (e.g., a last-ditch effort to cash out and get as much gold or RL cash as you all can before UO goes under). Seems to me, as an outsider, that you would give a much better impression of the rares community as a whole if there was a whole lot more acting like adults, forgiving and forgetting, mending of fences, healing of wounds, and pulling together to hammer out a way for the entire rares community to work together on something, no matter where it's held. Going off in different directions like this and making it look like nothing more than another attempt to show that certain people have more sway with the dev team than other people do isn't impressive to me and I doubt it will impress many other people either. I really don't understand why many people would willingly let themselves get enmeshed in such an atmosphere. It doesn't seem healthy nor does it seem like something that is going to draw people together as a community.

My two cents, anyway, as an outsider to this so-called community. Take it or leave it. But maybe it's worth heeding as I am NOT a rares collector and you did say you want to get more people involved in collecting rares.

@Tina Small you seem to be focused on buying gold. ive never, ever bought gold and have a very substantial rares collection. as i said in the other post, its extremely easy to get into now compared to past years. if your really interested in getting involved in rares collecting and the best methods to start (without ever buying gold) feel free to pm me.

This is just an idea, but what if we combined it into one, multi-shard community event. For example, usually rares fests have a section for selling/buying rares, and a section for games, events, and contests. Instead of having it only on Atlantic, or only on Chesapeake, we could for example have the actual buying/selling auctions and vendors on Atlantic so people can access the rares more easily without moving gold, but then have all of the fun events, games, and contests on Chesapeake.

They would happen at the same time, but instead of announcing an event like "harbinger spawning party at the Atlatic rares fest area" we could advertise that the event is on Chesapeake, so everyone who wants to could log out of Atlantic, log in Chesapeake, have fun at the event/game/contest and then log back into Atlantic to continue buying/selling. The more events the shard plans, the longer people will be on that shard having fun with friends.

In my opinion this would be a very good way to repair the relationship between shards and communities while allowing both shards staff teams to run their half of the event however they want without having to worry about the other shard competing with them. During the next rares fest, we could reverse that so all the buying/selling and auctions are on Chesapeake, and the events/games/contests would be on Atlantic. This gives both shards a fair chance of hosting both sides of the event.

If it involves going to EM events, which I suspect it does, I have no interest in it. EM events don't work for me.

@Tina Small , since you don't seem to have attended one before, maybe participate in one then comment?

At these "fests", there are usually multiple, player hosted events that are held where they do give away Rares and prizes. Harbringer Island is an example of such an event that's held.... checks and gold all over, useful items, Conj Robes, rares, loot, etc. It is fun! The people who run the rares fests donate the money and items to make the player events possible and exciting. Last time one of the giveaways was a rift pillar! That's ~400m alone...

Collecting rares does take some effort if you don't want to buy gold, but like Smoot, I have never bought any gold either. With UO releasing a new expansion I don't agree with your statement that people are cashing out b/c the game is dying. I sold much of my collection as I am getting married soon and needed the proceeds. It was a sad day, but was either that or go into debt... I still kept some of my favorite pixels. Everyone's reason can differ, but there are plenty of explanations other then the game is dieing :)

I encourage you to visit rares fest and make an informed opinion! If you need gold moved, hit me up I will help you, even if you don't plan on buying rares with it :) ICQ 307796114

    Copy/pasted from the ROC:

    P. Player to player transactions selling in-game virtual items for real life currency (commonly called "RMT") are prohibited from being promoted or advertised on our network.

    N
owhere does it say people cannot discuss RMT, only that they can't advertise or promote it. Since everything said about it so far has been a hypothetical scenario it would not count as promoting or advertising it in my opinion.

@Captn Norrington, I agree there are benefits to your idea, with regard to moving gold. Hopefully the gold changes in publish 90 will go a long way towards addressing that. In terms of moving items, realistically, a good number of items are moved regardless of where the fest is. Indeed, every drop, regardless of shard, there's a lot of movement involved. I know I've teamed up with others for many fests now, to share expenses for xfer tokens, or to best make use of shield tokens, when we've happened to have someone with that particular shield.

I have a few concerns, however.

First, this draws a big line between "stuff" and "community". Personally, I've found that many good conversations happen while a bunch of us are around stocking vendors, working in an auction house, etc. If I have 5 minutes to kill before an event, I may perhaps be browsing the vendors, and might strike up a conversation with a vendor's owner. If I have to worry about switching shards, that intermixing aspect is lost.

Second, and more important, while I do feel that fests should be about building community, not focused on "selling stuff", they are important to the economy of the shard hosting the festival. If vendoring still happens on Atlantic, then folks won't bring gold to the shard - why would they? That means that the shard hosting the fest has all the expenses of the events and games, and still has to pay the RL $ for game time to hold those houses - but literally sees zero economic benefit. Indeed, that shard still incurs the expense and hassle of moving its items to Atlantic so it can be presented in the auction and vendor house, so it's even less attractive. One benefit to the hosting shard is that people who geneally don't ever transfer items are presented an opportunity to present their wares. I know on Izumo there were several vendors who told me they never x-sharded items off for sale. Sure, the hosting shard can still have a vendor house as well - but then what's the point? Either everyone still xfers in, and the Atlantic half is redundant, or the local shard vendor house doesn't see any sales, as noone brought any gold to spend.

Finally, and please don't take this as Atlantic-bashing, nor as a complaint towards those who have organized Atlantic fests in the past... but Atlantic fest vendors have never seemed all that different from what is available on Atlantic anyhow, outside of a fest. Sure, there's perhaps a few people there who normally don't vendor on Atlantic, but generally, it has seemed that you could pick up the Genesis house, plop it down in place of the fest vendor house, and with respect to the vendors, you'd see little difference in wares. Even the experience of running a fest vendor on Atlantic is different. On any other shard, everyone is sort of collected into a... call it a goldfish bowl. There's not 50 other different things going on on the shard, so generally everyone hangs out in the fest area, and we do have those chances for people to meet and grow the community. On Atlantic, there's enough going on that the fest sort of blends into the background. Enough of the participants are from Atlantic that they go off and do other things, instead of hanging out at the fest. So whether its checking out the auction, managing your vendor, attending fest events, or generally hanging out, there is a far more subdued atmosphere to an Atlantic fest.

I would think that, if we split off vendoring and auctioning to always be on Atlantic, it would essentially become a situation where the fest itself is a graveyard up until 5 or 10 minutes before an event, the event would happen, then everyone would take off for Atlantic again. As you said, "everyone who wants to could log out of Atlantic, log in Chesapeake, have fun at the event/game/contest and then log back into Atlantic to continue buying/selling." In that case, one has to wonder why the non-Atlantic shard would bother? It would simply be a player-run, instead of EM-run, version of what happens now with EM events - people don't meet or hang out, they come, wait til they get a drop of decide there won't be one, then leave the shard.

This whole Atlantic versus the rest of the shards misses one big point I'm betting there are a large amount of players who would like to get some unique items but don't have shard shields to move around. So lets think of the players on each shard give them a chance to get some things. Brian is pretty well spot on if I want to go to a rares fest I can see pretty much all that would be at one on vendors on Atlantic. There are a lot of us that don.t think Atlantic is the centre of the Universe.

So that's why I don't understand why he is cancelling his event. People have multiple characters and can attend both I would think. There's certainly enough rares to go around to support it. Plus I am hosting some activities that don't necessarily cater to just rares, for example the tour of homes. It's not just rares collecting that this part will focus on but the deco talent so many people have, in either decorating or customizing amazing houses. I was pretty excited to host that activity most of all. I am trying really hard not to let anyone take the wind out of my sails, but the negativity makes it so hard sometimes.

yes, if you can not or will not commit a significant amount of time to EM events, rares collecting is not for you. I say this generally, i had billions worth of rares before i ever committed myself to EM events, other players have done the same such as one of the best ex-moderators of this forum. However that road is alot "harder" than if you did attend events, involves buying rares with just gold you make from vendors / buy-sell / suits / in game. Its very doable, but in the end is actually a much bigger commitment for much smaller payoff.

EM events are the driving force of the UO economy in modern UO. The pvp playerbase is just too small that while jewels/weapons/armor still are a viable option to making gold (maybe this would suit you better, i dont find farming exodus / scalis nearly as entertaining as EM events but thats personal preference) The only "rares" we get now are from EM events, so to become a rares collector it only makes sense to participate in that huge aspect of the game.

Also, like blue fly said, just attending any rares gathering as a non-collector can be fun. Just to see whats out there, see what other players have a good time with and get excited about, and yes for the games / raffles / prizes, there of course will be many items given out as prizes probably totally a few billion gold.
