Okay, my beetle just TELEPORTED out of my house and died

I was watering plants in my closed house, and it just VANISHED. Confused, I looked around, and to my horror, I see it outside, BEHIND the house, fighting a reaper! Now, I make sure to design my houses so that pets can't go wandering... I live in reaper valley, so there's always something around.

Of course, the beetle dies, and now I've got to fetch a crapload of stuff off the corpse and resurrect a beetle that just apparently developed magical powers of teleportation.

Excuse me? what is with THIS little bug?

That is very unusual behaviour for a beetle...

Maybe your bug was unhappy with his life?

I wonder if it has to do with the reaper trying to teleport to the bug... I don't think the reaper could get into the house.

It was the Orkin Man outside.

    no bug is safe.

I've never had a reaper manage to actually get in the house; they'll spawn right along the edge so it LOOKS like they're inside, but they're not-- you can't attack. It was literally an instantaneous teleport... one second he's there, the next he's not.

Maybe you should file a bug report? That really is quite strange...

Yeah, definitely. I'm going to file it here in a few minutes. Definitely not cool. I've lived in this spot, with this spawn, and this beetle, for months, and have never had a problem before today! Talk about a real "bug".

Was it teleported to the front of your house? The only reason I ask is if it was somehow flagged criminal and then booted? Sounds crazy though. Maybe the reaper flagged on it then teleported and invis'ed or something weird and then your pet went gray and was booted? Weird stuff though. Good thing you didn't lose any stuff :)

Nope. It teleported through the north wall of the house, to the reaper that was about two tiles from the northern edge of the house footprint. DEfinitely not the front; that part of my house is spawn-free. I had to do an allnames to find the beetle!

When your pack animals go after spawn outside your house, it's both cute, because your pets seem to despise evil and are hellbent on destroying it no matter what, and annoying because maybe you were adding or removing from their pack when your pack animals rush off after spawn outside your house and your work was interrupted.

This is a real nuisance if they die because they then need unloading and ressing.

Pack animals who are going after spawn are amazingly fast, compared to how slowly they follow most times, and if there's a way to get to the spawn, they will find it.

Not too long ago pet commands got reworked, so now pets will be much more obedient if you have issued the proper last command to them.

Therefore if you wish your pet to stop rushing off to attack spawn then make sure you have issued the appropriate last command of all follow me or all stay to them.

Naturally, you'd think that if you desire your pet to stay or to follow you, you would simply command them to all stay or all follow me.

Except they won't listen well to all stay or all follow me IF you have previously commanded them to all guard me, (or maybe even all kill).

It is necessary to command your pet to all stop, to cancel any previous commands, mostly all guard me, AND THEN you need to command it to all follow me, or all stay, if you desire your pet to stop chasing spawn.

I did a simple test just now. I told my crafter's pack beetle to ALL STOP, then ALL FOLLOW ME and took it to Tram Moonglow moongate.

Found 2 mongbats. They both squeaked, which would normally annoy the bejebus out of most of my pets and send them off on the attack, but my beetle stayed behind me as ordered.

Both mongbats proceeded to attack me, my beetle did nothing.

So give All Stop, then All Follow Me or All Stay a try.

Also, always, always keep your pets well fed, especially when giving them multiple commands.

I recall reading that some monsters are natural enemies, think it had something to do with factions, so there is a possible chance that your properly commanded pet might still go after it's natural faction enemy.

This is a non-combat character. Because of the nature of where my house is located... I ALWAYS hit my "all stop all follow me" macro - because you never know when they're going to randomly take off after being attacked. She's a crafter... while this is a trained beetle, the only time he attacks things is if I'm mining, and I haven't mined in months.

None of this helped, though... there was no running, no chasing. It just magically appeared outside, THROUGH a northern wall, and started attacking. This is not normal behavior that can be prevented through any kind of in-game mechanic. this is a bug.
