Thinking about coming back to the game, for about the 50th time. I was once (pre-Renaissance) a very knowledgeable player, but having played very sporadically since that time has rendered me to probably less-than-noob status (I think I cling to old ideas that don't even work anymore).
I have tried multiple strategies to get back into the game, but am essentially a broke new player--I have a house, and some junk laying around, but no real knowledge of how to play this game today, or any high-quality items. Can anyone point me in a direction that will get me back into the game at some semblance of a decent pace? I have tried this several times, but I always hit a wall, where I can't manage to get over a wall, and can only kill things that give me a small pile of gold as a reward, but the next hurdle facing me is a piece of equipment that costs 10 million, or a scroll that costs twice that.
I am open to any advice--what type of character, how to proceed initially, and especially what to do "mid-game".

Well, I have decided to go forward with my mage.

    Skills:
    Magery 115/115
    Eval 115/115
    Med 115/115
    Resist 107.7/115
    Inscription 100/100
    Fishing 100/100
    Focus 67.1 (dropping)

    Stats:
    Str 100
    Dex 15
    Int 129
    HP 101
    Stam 15
    Mana 129

I wear a LRC suit, it is basically crap, but the stats are:
    36/36/41/40/30
    LRC 102
    HR 4
    SR 2
    MR 2
    DCI 20

I am open to any advice to doing something useful with this character. As it stands, the only things I know that I am capable of doing is fishing up MIBs, and killing arctic ogre lords (with an ogre slayer spellbook). Is there another skill I can use to boost this character's effectiveness, or are there areas I should try to hunt in as/is?

I'd swap the fishing for mystic and then up the focus.

    My mage/mystics is:

    mage 120
    mystic 120
    eval 120
    med 120
    focus 120
    inscription 100

Fair enough, but what do I do with him after that? Where can I hunt? Will my armor hold up?

I have been away a long time...the last time I played regularly, if you wanted the absolute best available, then you farmed terathan matriarchs, and that was back when gm was as good as it gets, and if you didn't have gm hiding, healing, and anat, the matriarchs were going to eat your lunch.

Edit: Btw, the 120s are *way* out of my price range right now. I have about a million gold laying around, total. I could consolidate everything I own and get a little more, but probably still not enough to snag five 120 PS'es.

Probably your first step should be to get a better suit - an LRC suit with 70 in all resists and ideally some Mana Regen and Mana Increase would be ideal. On most shards this will cost you between 50-500k if you buy it from a player vendor, but you may be able to find a crafter who will imbue you a suit to spec. I'm not a fisherman but from what I've seen recently MiBs will sell for 10-50k each, which may make it more profitable to sell them rather than fish them up. If you can get your hands on a Dragon slayer spellbook then you can farm in Destard/Ice dungeon for Horned and Barbed leather, which sells for a decent price (Horned about 50-70k per 1000 and Barbed 70-100k per 1000). There are player stalls in New Magincia now which sell pets, usually there is a couple of vendors selling utility pets like Giant Beetles which can hold 1600 stones of items and are ridable, so it may be handy to grab one to hold the leather. Since you have Inscription you can also make scrolls/spellbooks/runebooks and sell them to other players on a vendor, but you'll need to buy a decent amount of reagents for this. You can also sell scrolls to NPCs, Inscription is one of the few if not the only skills where you can sell your wares to NPCs and make a net profit. Hope this gives you some ideas :)

When your skills are fully trained, next step is to go fight some peerless to get the arites ($$). That way you can get rich faster.
Coz you'll want to fight bigger stuff eventually to keep things interesting for you. Mystic Mage is a good one, but you need teammates & better items.
Or, try Vampire Archer/Thrower, you can solo rat/dragon spawn at quiet times without problem.

Never, never give away fishing! It is so tedious to train up and can get you some serious money these days. I can understand you might not want fishing on your mage char, but then soulstone and keep it for another character you'd like to train later. MIBs sell for the mentioned price only because they can make you much more when you fish them up. Depending on the level the chest is you fish up you have 10k - 30k in your pocket right away. When you find an antique wedding dress in the chest it will sell for 100k - 120k (at least here on Europa, and I reckon it's similar on other chars), and the other arties and marties you can find sell for several 10sk as well. Should you be so lucky and get a white SOS out of your MIB, you are in for 40k gold, a white fishing net and possibly some other valuable stuff. So fishing can be a fairly risk-free, nice money maker.

I know there are faster ways to get gold, but they hardly come as easy as fishing. If your fishing skill is high enough, you can even sell rare fish and crustacians to other players which are doing the fishing quests and are happy to buy fish rather then trying to catch them themselves. I even sell fish pies and while it doesn't bring me riches it pays for the vendors and then some.

It's true, hides and ingots sell nicely at the moment, but getting the hides are not quite risk free and maybe not easy for the beginning. Once you have a decent warrior with a few specialised items for armour and weaponry, it's fun and fast to get some decent amounts of hides to sell. Until then I would stick to less dangerous enterprises. Farming the troglodytes is a very fast way to make money, but you need a decent mage or warrior for that, so you won't get overwhelmed by them.

I hope this gives you some ideas. I am sure the people on your local help channel in game will help you with more tips and equipment to get you in full-swing.

Welcome back Reinzeld! It is going on 3 weeks now since you first posted and hope you have stuck with it thus far, even though replies to your post have been few. There are many helpful folk's if you ask in gen chat. I find that the "help" chat is fairly a quiet place. You haven't (or I missed it) mentioned what shard you are on. I'm on Catskill's and can help you out if you are still feeling lost or just need somone to hunt with. Iv'e been back for 3+ years and still learning, I still have yet to create a gargoyle!

I'm on Lake Superior. I have logged in a few times, but am still kind of at a loss. Basically still just farming the arctic ogre lord if it is available. I have tried the troglodytes on several occasions, with my mage and my nowhere-near-completed sampire, and get hammered every time. So, my next question--how do I use the general chat? I see it pop up on the bottom of the screen on occasion (usually someone selling something for cash on a website), but I don't know how to actually use it.

Are you familiar with the other communication types?

Well, using the other chat is typing a comma, space then what you're saying.

Changing world chat channekl (like from help to general or an event channel) is done via the chat section on the bar in CC - not sure how it's done in EC.

Figured out some of the chat stuff tonight, actually. Farmed some more arctic ogre lords...hoping to find a better suit and maybe move on to something better soon.

Well, got bored of the arctic ogre lords, so I took my spastic sampire down to the cavern of the discarded or whatever, and ended up breaking the bank. Got the champ down to 12%, but after that I died, and died, and died. Wound up spending every penny I had on insurance until I left it all on my body and couldn't afford another horse, so I threw in the towel. I clearly can't grasp how to play this game, it's way too different from the one I used to play, and I give up. :O

Chat channel in Enhanced UO is done by using the horizontal hot bar with the UO icons for things like War/Peace and the map symbol. You select the word balloon icon, and a list of channels pops up. Just click the one you want.
