ok i have been playing UO for a long time over 8 years and i noticed a big decline in players through out the years. one reason i truly believe is because in this game like in real life as the saying goes the rich get richer and the poor get poorer meaning the big guilds and really rich players keep selling there items for insane prices this turns a lot of us poorer players off and many players have quit for that reason alone. some players can play for years and not even have a million gold. obviously in this game players have the freedom to sell there items for any price that they please that is fine but sadly there is always some guy or girl who buys these items for these insane prices doing that keeps the prices up. i am sure this will get ignored or ridiculed but i have a request for the big guys the really rich and powerful please start bringing your prices down you will still be rich and give more of the poor players a better feeling about you and they just might be less willing to quit and this might bring more players in. ill make this a vote so please vote or comment thanks.

People will never just lower their prices because the poor ask. You just gotta find a way to make more cash. And another reason UO doesn't have many players: its ancient-looking graphics. I love them, but nearly every new player thinks they suck.

if players start refuseing to pay these redicilous prices they will start bringing them down then or they will lose money.

There's always gonna be someone that pays millions for items. The only items I really see a problem with are the event items that are sold on the rares collectors forums, that sell for hundreds of real life dollars.

I'd be filthy rich too if I were dumb enough to sepnd real life cash on game money.

Hell, I'd be the laughing stock of my family, work profession and the neighborhood.

I'm actually embarrassed for people like that.............:coco:

I don't think some traders really give a *bleep* about the normal player who can't afford their items. As long as UO gold can be bought and sold for RL $ players who can't afford items are "encouraged" to buy gold and thus the rich guys get richer.

What I see these days is pretty sad. Players are aware of cheating but still buy gold from iffy sources, or resources from bot collectors. And they will pay inflated prices because they want those items enough to pay RL $.

Now, who's to say what will happen now the economic situation has gone dodgy? Maybe players won't pay so much because they're cutting back. I think some merchants will quit rather than drop their prices below a certain point. Certainly the ones who buy and resell.

  7. It's extremely easy to make gold in this game. Anyone that puts in some time and effort can make millions easily, even if they only play a couple of hours a day. They just have to put their efforts towards that end and it will happen. Recently one of our Stratics players did a test and transferred to a new shard, starting with nothing. Within about a week I think it was, this person already had 5 mil or so, just by begging during the Halloween event, which is something any player, regardless of what type or level of character they had could have done exactly the same thing.

All it takes is the "want" to do something, then the effort to make it happen.

Well honestly I've played for over 8 years and I like to get most things on my own... Now before they made doom changes that was impossible for me.... NO matter how long I spent in Doom I never got an artie.... all I got was poorer..... NOT much fun.... kinda got annoyed with all the Artie bussiness and gave up........

Used to be I could spend hours hunting in shame killing bloods or somewhere killing demons or something like that and the money wasn't too bad. However now that they ruined the Bag of Sending I find myself looting gold less and less often..... too much of a pain to kill 3 or 4 of them have to sacred journey out..... bank.... run all the way back there..... get annoyed cause someone took my spot..... find a new spot where no one is hunting..... kill 3 or 4 things..... sacred journey out.... go to the bank..... come back run all the way through the dungeon back to where I was hunting.... rinse and repeat... after about the third trip I get rather annoyed at the whole thing and just give it up......

Now sure I could use a beetle and put gold in the beetle keep on hunting... but I only have two stable slots and right now I have a paroxy dragon and a black horse..... NOT about to get rid of either of those.... so that won't work..... surely am not gonna have a stupid beetle following me around... I'm a Knight for crying out loud.... NO way... Suppose if I had more stable space I might concider using a beetle... but definatly NOT with only the 2 spaces...

I suppose I could use another character who isn't my archer so my pack isn't full of arrows/bolts/bows/aides/and potions...... but how would I keep up my skills if not in hunting???

I suppose I could go to fel and lure innocent trammel folk there and get my buds to help me gank them and take their insurance money.... seems like lame gameplay to me.... I can't do it.....

And certainly I could put 10 vendors up somewhere in Luna and charge highly over inflated prices for the 10th anniversary junk I get in the dungeons, or the 100's of gifts I get every year...... or any number of other items I take the time to collect and that are now collecting dust in my house's.... But I dont' much care for the whole vendor sceene at all and personally I wish NPC vendors would just be taken out of the game and I wish the only way to sell anything or get anything repaired was to actually buy it directly from another player ...... So that's my thought.

You know, the whole economical system is kinda funny to me, I've made over 100 mil since the bag of sending change, never got close before it. The reason? I was sick of not having money, I made a sampire, got a darkwood suit and a pair of rune blades with mana, HLD, and SSI, and soloed dread several times a day. Took a while to get it down right, but I got to the point where it took less than 15 minutes to kill him, and about 10 minutes per set of keys. Point is that you just have to find something you're good at and drops expensive items, keep doing it, and eventually you will have tons of money.

As a part time farmer of monsters, it needs to be understood that collecting gold is NOT the way to make mega bucks. 7-10 hours of farming can get you a million...not very fun...

The money comes from the items a person can collect in the game, then selling those items. Some money comes from IDOC's, the vulture life is a profitable one in UO. Last people sell their wares you can make good money this way too.

That being said, having to invest about 160+ hours of gold farming to get a Crimson is insane. The people that say otherwise either have one, two, or are the ones selling for 16 million. Then we also have the people that will say "go fight lady Mel and earn a Crimson". I can relate to this but for me after 1000 Mels no Crimson (hence the 16 mil price tag).

I wish there was a standard factor used to come up with price...currently it could be time, difficulty, rarity or any combination of all the above.

I have suggested making a vendor system like SWG, it for the most part is the same as UO...butttt...at the bank in SWG you can search all items being sold on the server you play on. Makes for competative pricing. For the consumer this is a great idea, for the greedy sellers it will cut into their bottom line.

As long as there are people willing to pay the price, the price will be set at that level.
People have too much gold. Period.

Youd have to be special not to be able to make money in this game with ease. Please learn of a decent guild and join them, even a tram guild chaining peerless can make some serious cash. Create a ljer and do vesper turn ins, do mining and sell the ingots, scrolls, buy low and sell high, tailoring, jesus i could go on for years.. IDOCs in tram *if your a noob* selling realestate, heck its soo easy to make money on this game that if you cant.. welp theres no help for you in any game. You can easily make 100k an hour killing dragons in tram or double that in felucca, its just that easy in this game.

Make all items attainable to everyone and the demand for them will go down as well as the prices.

I am in no way saying to give items away (ala throw them on the ground). But if there was a small chance to get one of them with every kill you make, people would be more active and the value of them would go down.

lol your player base would go down also. The high end items are well lets be honest, being used by the high end pvpers. To any pvper that is worth their grain of salt theyll attain those high end items and that is pretty much the end of that. Making people who had spent all this time building suits, making gold, etc.. and have their stuff worth about as much as a basic scrappers would be probably the finishing blow of uo. Yea it would promote player pvp but, then this game would just be like test center pretty much and tc doesnt keep pvpers there too long.

The reason IMHO UO doesn't have as many players IS because of what I like to call "CRACKHEAD" prices! Because some of those prices the player stocking the vendor gotta be smoking crack.
I love trading items for items but trading items is dead. Unfortunatly if you want dencent armor, weapons, or a 120 scroll you are SCREWED!

Ask a player selling a 120 if he/she will lower her price OR trade the they will laugh at you and say:

    A) if you want it bad enough GO BUY GOLD TO BUY it.

    B) Why should I drop the price I can get X amount of RL dollars for it.

    C) They will eventually get the gold they want for so go *ahem* Butt a rubber stump.

I will admit I have had to resort to buying gold not so much for buying items as for insurance on 24 characters!!!!!

IMHO most UO players have the attitude that their accounts/items/ whatever is worth all this real life money and SHOULD get it! :coco: Its this disgusting greedy attitude that turns new players off.:talktothehand:

Even housing prices are a turn off I gave away a keep to a newbie because the people that said it was worth X millions ALREADY had keeps/castles! The person I gave it to is still playing and having a wonderful time with their keep. Most UO players would RATHER BE PKED than give away a keep or castle.

(Plucky & Thunder that's not aimed at you. Sis and I together don't have enough fingers and toes to count all the houses ya'll have given away. Ya'll are some of the good guys!)

:rant2: The turn-ins are only fueling the greedy-greedy gimme-gimme attitude! PLEASE PEOPLE 100 million for a FREAKING SUIT OF ARMOR! :gee: Don't pay this! Go hunt Ophidians, fish up mibs, steal artifacts, hunt paragons, run the gauntlet, run a champ spawn, and there is many, many other things you can do. I have 900k of points so far, some from crap accumulated on my four accounts, other from doing the things I just listed.

Another reason is no one wants to help newbies, thank to Xsharders that like to masqurade as newbies so they can get something for nothing.:gee: I used to run a newbie guild I can't even begin to add the gold. minor artifacts, armor, weapons and jewels I have given away to help my newbies. Sadly my guild is DOA :stretcher: except for my characters.

UO has the same problem as society in real life ...PEOPLE..Everybody wants instant gratification, aka gotta have it all RIGHT NOW. Nobody wants to WORK for anything. :gee:*SIGH*

We are helping to killing UO people, as surely as if we drove a stake through its heart. :twak:

I think what's really killed/killing UO is the Trammel mindset and EAs notion of making this game a cookie cutter of whatevers the flavor MMO out there.

What do I mean by that? Well... simply put... largely catering to a small playerbase/playstyle while killing off of the many many playstyles that used to inhabit UO... because they weren't to the taste of our very vocal minority.

No more thieves - insurance killed it.

No more monster hunters - AoS and 99% of loot dropped from monsters being worthless killed it.

No more RPers - segregating the community killed it (raise your hand if you remember what a dungeon crawl was.)

No more player run towns/events - EA and selfish volunteers killed it (they could have quit at any time, but noooo....)

No more crafters - AoS killed it (try selling a GM non-runic made kryss at a forge in Brit...)

No more player - pirates, orcs, savages, vampires, knights, brigands - Trammel/AOS killed it (at the very least we can't even dress up like an orc or savage... the gear just sucks... try RPing an Orc in Tram and see how many oomies u clomp on top of that...)

No more casual players - the bar for gear and gold is so damn high no one who logs on once or twice a week for a few hours can keep up.

Do you see this people? Have none of you noticed how a-like we are? We're all fighting the same monsters, running the same templates (archery anyone?), wearing the same-type gear, going for the same stuff, looking the same but in different colors... were all the same. We're finally... a niche.

We've restricted and changed this game so much... that there isn't any room for anyone else... anymore.

Now you all carry on your discussion about how you want to band aid the problem.

    you have my 2 cents.

PS. Dev's... if you read this and want to seek the advice of someone who's been playing since Beta, who's been a power gamer and who has experience with every char-type this game has to offer on how to remedy this... feel free to PM me [/end shameless plug

i believe it has to do with the graphics, someone looking to play their first mmo will not be attracted to uo and won't give it a chance although they should, they want eye candy as in wow, aoc, etc... KR to me isn't uo its just some bad looking attempt, uo is 2D and thats the way its gonna be which is what i love about it

  21. First off I would offer that prices are set at what a player might really really need... To understand what I'm saying, if you needed a set of leather arms with 15% LRC 2-MR 6-LMC, that item would complete your "end-game" suit, you would pay alot of gold for it.

The players who do not need such an item to complete a suit, or even have a suit like this, or have items similar enough to get by without it, or have no clue to the items actual functional value in-game... the value would seem too high or even silly.

Take an nice artifact, they arent priced for the guy who could use a third one for his other characters or some poor new player, they are priced for the guy who has played for years and still has'nt gotten one yet, has millions in gold, and they really really wants one...

Don't get me wrong, I'm not defending merchants, and I rarely buy anything for millions. I personally find the commercialism in-game to be terrible, not the prices but the grind involved with the constant selling. Those terrible players who only do stuff in game IF they might get something they can sell... ugh

Like the example of raven going to another shard and taking advantage of generous good natured people and exploiting the needy/ignorant players and actually being proud of it... "Hey you need some gold? Awww here let me low ball you, or better yet talk you into giving it for free, and then put it on a vendor for triple or pure profit and then come back and laugh about it..." It's just my opinion of course, but anyone who sells gifts from players or something for 300% profit is just an asshat, no offense intended really... I know I know... she roleplays the merchant... rolleyes: Then she sells you gold for RL cash ? hmmm you never know who is who online you know lol

But back on point, the real reason UO is on the outs is graphics, as one poster pointed out. Starts with the ancient 2D stuff and ends with them doing a world wide published release of a horrible bug ridden KR client (cough Beta cough) Have you ridden a boat in KR? A Beetle?

I know I sound negative, but I hope you understand I'm just realistic... I love UO.

So imho its graphics... Maybe a bit of over commercialism, but not so much the actual prices so much.

jesus man this game is soo dang easy to play. You dont need 20's my mage does fine with necro and magery in the 15's. You dont need high end items, i can use a plain scrappers for the main part of my suit. Not to mention u can build a lrc suit for as cheap as 50k, wont be the best resists but its a suit to make ya money. All you people do is whine on here, when honestly nothing should be holding ya back from making money. It's soo easy a caveman can do it honestly.

The Merchants Game inside this game we call UO is done by "bid and ask".
If this is a sellers market as you say then the players can turn it into a buyers
market by increasing the number of vendors and the supply of those so high
    priced items you mentioned!
This can be done... but just do not ask the developers to do it for you by
increasing the spawn rate of items.

    How much money you talkin'?
This game is for powergamers the way it is right now. If you're not, you can't get enough gold to buy a complete set of the good stuff, you can't get enough runics to make the good stuff for yourself, and you can't get looting rights to take the good stuff when the powergamers are after it too.

It's perfectly understandable for you powergamers to want to preserve your status as "elite" players.
Save us the "it's easy" speeches, it's not easy. It's hard work that takes hours every day. It's boredom and monotony piled on top of more of the same. Unless, of course, you run scripts.

Gold is next to worthless because of all the scripters, more or less. That's the main cause of inflation. When people can buy gold for $1/mil they will toss it around like it's penny candy, which in turn causes grossly inflated prices.

I agree for tha most part.. but a lot of these can be worked around with an imagination:

Yes, item insurance and people like Rico killed stealing.. just join up with a guild (with a malicious intent) gain trust, make friends.. and rob them blind. It helps too if you are seeking a praticular item to steal. The months long process is almost better than stealing the item itself, and you just made a lot of enemies in the process :stir:

Monster loot does need to be looked into.. blackrock eles for example..

Player towns, RPers and Orcs and such can all be put into one category.. And were not gone entirely.. ;) Im still a bartender at Gathered Spirits on Pacific.. that place is only like 10 years young..

Seers and EMs need to be brought back.

Casual players can be left out for instance on live events.. but its no more difficult for them than the hard-core gamer. Its just that.. the 'casual' gamer. You cant expect to be the biggest and best playing 15 minutes a day. Thats just how it goes.

Everyone looks alike because they like having the best gear? Wouldnt make sense to go out in a GM crafted Val platemail suit like in the old days, now would it?

Hate to say it, but if the casual gamer needs some income, join FL, and do some spawns. Youll get the gold, scrolls and skills in no time.. free. Just gotta kill people in the process.. and then when your all said and done, rob them. :thumbup1:

    *edit*

If you want to stop scripters, do away with UOA.

No whining, no crying... no. more. UOA.

Is it really that hard to drag your cursor over your apples to count them? Or your regs for that matter? After 10 years you still dont know what spells are what? Oh!.. it makes your macrows and targeting easier.. well it also makes scripting possible!..

This is one of those misunderstandings that people continue to have. I'm going to explain it. UOAssist is at best a macro program. Sure it has a few scripts in it that EA allows the program to use, but it doesn't allow the use of complicated scripts. I have Assist, and I barely use it, except maybe when I need to train a new character with a macro.

Scripts are programs that can actually make basic decisions for themselves. Assist can't make a macro that recalls you to a bank at X number of stones, but a script can do that and more.

I am frankly tired of people who talk about UOAssist as a cheat program when 1) it is allowed 2) it doesn't really do much in most people's hands and 3) it is at best a crutch. A few people will milk more out of UOAssist, but chances are they are already playing this game better than you anyway.

  32. Trebr Drab

UOAssist is used by other scripts to cheat. I don't know if it's as effective as yet other scripts, but it's a fact.

And there are people who use certain items with scripts to make them more effective. Doesn't make using those items cheating. I've used an assist macro and the built in boat/map system to move around Bucs den, hugging the cost, for maximum skill gain while fishing. A great macro, aye, but not a script in itself (it had no decision making properties, and I had to watch it constantly because of random monsters, other boats, etc.).

I'm betting the Assist macros that are worked into the scripts are mostly used by scripters who are too lazy to program those actions directly into their scripts. Removing Assist would not stop the worst scripters who use other programs.

Im from the days of no such thing as UOA (or Trammel ;) ).. and still dont use it, UOAM, UORudder, or even icq (anymore) or anything for that matter. Besides UO, youll find these boards minimized on my toolbar..

Maybe thats why im still playing after ten years...?

Using this logic: UO is used by scripts to cheat. Ban the use of UO when playing UO.

Twist it any way you want. The fact is that UOAssist is being used for scripts. It's a problem. It doesn't matter who's at fault, it's still a problem.

Players should have the right to sell whatever they own for whatever they choose to sell it for... it is up to the buyer to decide what is too much.

There are many artifacts that I have wanted that were greatly overpriced. So I went to doom... still no luck... so I went to doom some more... nope no luck... but I was still able to play and enjoy the game :)

Congratz you managed to narrow it down to just one !!! :mf_prop: j/k

Seriously if you have been playing UO for 8 years you must know UO's game design , I'll refersh it for you.

    1) UO is populated by about 50% with gold/item sellers that use hacks to gain rare items and game gold.

    2) UO's other 50% population are casual players that dont have the time or the know how to use hacks to gain rare items and game gold.

The players in group 2 buy UO game gold on the internet from suppliers affiliated with group 1 , then the group 2 players take that gold and spend it on vendors operated by group 1 players giving it all back so it can once again be sold to another player in group 2.

All of this keeps what few subscribers UO has left playing and paying subscription fees.New players and casual players can buy their way into the game quickly , hackers make a bit of rl cash for their time and effort. Its basically a third party service the hacker provide, enabling other players to do more in the game.

So your best hope is that gold will continue to accumulate and price for a million gold will go down. I hear some websites sell it for .50c per million now.

Have fun relax and enjoy because this is the reality of how UO operates and has been operating for several years.

Prices on items have nothing to do with UO's lower playerbase. There are many other factors to consider.

I'm still playing after ten years, though there were times when I wasn't terribly active. Was the reasons I only logged in a couple of times a week because UOAssist had made things too easy? Considering I have really used Assist with my combat characters and only had a client-side heal self macro at the fall of Magincia, that wasn't the reason. The reason was problems within my roleplay community that made me not feel like logging in. There are 100 and 1 reasons people stop playing, and some are preventable by EA and some are not.

It makes sense that some scripters would have their script program use UOAssist. It has some convenient features that the scripter would have to program themselves if it didn't exist. Scripters also use Soulseekers, runebooks, and bags of sending (formerly). Cheaters will use any tools available to them, including some legitimate ones. A cheater will not only use cheats if a legal way is more efficient. I think that Assist adds a few options to the game that probably should have been in it to begin with and deals with the drudgery of certain tasks (making 100 of the same item, formerly smelting).

I turned in 575,000 points worth of tickets (fishing rocks!) in to the Spring Cleaning before I decided to save myself the effort by making an Assist Macro. I didn't enjoy the 100s of individual clicks. I wasn't getting anything by doing it the hard way. There was no style to it. There was no joy in it. There was no profit in it. There was no respect in it. It was a bunch of unnecessary mouse clicks.

  45. You are wrong.
    The insane prices arent exclusive.

You have an equal opportunity to get wealth.

Go to Doom, get a nice item. You sell it. Millions.
Go to Strangers, stand there and dont even fight. Pick up stuff. I got a crimson cin. I could sell it for an easy 12 million. So could you.

Go to Strangers start finding the rare gems.

Turn in stuff and sell it. Youll get millions.

You forget or maybe dont realize the prices inflate due to the amount of gold.

It would be silly to lower prices and keep the same amount of gold in the game.

8 years ago a silver vanq katana would cost 100,000 plus. But gold was harder to come by.

Its all relative and you are not excluded from the market.

Play, get stuff, sell stuff, spend your millions on the items you want.

May I ask what items you are talking about? There really isnt anything priced out that prevents players from playing.

  46. Yeah that was me. It was extremely easy to make millions. Then I collected rubble. Made more.

Anyone can jump into the economy.

If your talking about event items. Who cares? That is if the original poster is talking about the event items. Nothing else is really unattainable.
