I don't play much UO anymore... been playing Darkfall. The PvPs more about player skill and not who has the gimpest template. I still have active accounts and log in to bull**** now and again, but there is no reason for me to return fulltime. None. There is no competition. There hasn't been any for years. Guilds like TnT are a freaking joke. The games too carebear for me to care anymore. Players hide in houses thinking their badass. Run around on invisible characters thinking their badass. Talk smack on the forums all day long, but never back it up. It's absolutely pathetic.

Playing DF, I'm a nobody trying to become somebody. Playing Siege I'm at the top of the food chain... boring.

DF has no places that are completely safe zones people can hide in. Has no instanced crap where people can hunt monsters in safety. Has no invisible force fields keeping people out of sieging/raiding anothers house/city. Hell you can even break the door down if the owners inside and has their house locked up. DF has no gimp template flavor of the month crap.

It's UO in 3d and I love it. I love UO too, but I'm sorry... running around luna looking to fight what seems a bunch of panzies hidden, waiting to pop out just to get a cheap kill is not worth it. There aren't any raids on champ spawns anymore. Factions apparently was too much to handle for too many. It's all a freaking joke at this point. PvP in UO has become a joke. The reason I play.

So Im going to leave you with a video of Darkfall and what I now play for... Enjoy.

When Siege or even UO for that matter sees battles like this... I'll be back. Taking on 5 guys sitting hidden just outside of luna east gate somehow just doesn't compare.

Oh and yes... those videos show actual in game footage.

I know all about MO and it's nothing like old UO... its actually pretty sucky. Kinda like Aion. Everyone thought Aion was going to be like UO when it was really WoW with fairy wings.

Darkfall is actually EXACTLY like UO was back in 1997 (before eval/med/anat and a lot of the skills used today to customize templates.) Back before t2a, most players ran what is famously (and incorrectly) called a tank mage these days. Melee skill, Archery and Magery. (Swords, Tactics, Wrestling Archery, Magery Resist and often hiding.) This character wore full plate... hence the tank part of the name.

You can specialize in DF, but the hybrid is just that... Melee, Archery and Magic.

Ima be honest... Darkfall is the closest thing to Ultima Online pre-Trammel there is out today. The hilarious part is that it's even closer to pre-ren UO than UO is at this point in time.

    lol

I can almost guarantee you that I'm not in your vent.

I game with the same players (people) I've been gaming with for more than a decade now.

Enigma knows them well, he used to be in the guild. They haven't played UO since 2003 (AoS) and I haven't hopped games as much as they have... but now that Darkfall is here, we've pretty much come back together.

    Anyways..

    whiskey *shudders* sake for me!

Jusr was thinking back. Years ends make me do that. I remember when I came to siege from great lakes. Training was a horrible challenge. Whenever you left the house, you were taking a chance, and always had to inventory your gear to make sure you didn't have anything valuable.

Now, I go whereever I want, do whatever I want, pretty much. I can't even remember the last time someone killed me- or even made the attempt. No one "farms" players any more. I miss that inherent risk that everything used to have.
Bring the slayers back, I say. The place was more interesting with them.

Except that it isn't FFA PvP like UO was back then. No, I don't Play UO either and haven't for quite some time. But, I have yet to find a new game amongst these RvR excuses for PvP to replace it.

So, I sit in EQ2 on a PvP server where its FFA but completely faction based. Closest I've come so far. :(

Even Darkfall (the Jesus of all MMO's according to most on the forums for 7 years) falls short. The day of the Carebear is here. Read the DF forums.. they're already calling for nerfs and immunity and safety for new players.

There will never be another UO pre-Ren/Trammel. Too many people are taking shelter under the "I'm a casual player and play/pay to relax" umbrella.

Darkfall is exactly like UO was back in 1997. And it's definitely FFA PvP.

No tram. Guardzones (NPC cities) are not insta death guard wacks (there are guard towers.)

    There's player housing.

    Theres storage in player housing.

    Theres archer/melee/magery characters.

There are 6 races (with racial alignment) and it's an overlay on the system. Meaning you can PK your own race. (there are orcs!)

There are cities you can build. There are hamlets (mini forts) you can build. You can build rafts, ships (shooners to brigs.) You can steal, siege, conquer any of these.

Fighting a dragon actually means something.

    A kraken is ridiculous.

The ONLY differences between this game and old UO are it's 3d, you can build/conquer stuff, naval/water combat and there's no thief profession (yet.)

There's no instant recall. Recall runes are 1 use and not common (only spawn as monster loot.) You can recall to your house or to a bind stone. There are nexus portals, but they are not common either. You have to travel by mount or foot most places you go. You only get 1 character. You can craft TONS of stuff and enhance (enchant) it. It is hard to build your character just like it was hard to build your character when UO came out. Anyone remember trying to GM blacksmithy, magic resist, parry before Trammel and powerhour? Lets not even talk about magery before meditation or how Siege Perilous has a little thing called RoT.

    Player Skill
    Character Skills
    Equipment
    Stats

are the order of what determines how well you can play. It's not a *pick this template or suit and loller-win* crap. It's the best damn game to happen to our kind of players (the players Siege was built for.)

It's an indy company. It's now selling boxes on store shelves in greece and the game is growing fast.

If you are or ever were a Siege player or player from UO circa 97-00... I have no idea how in the hell you're not or you've not tried this game.

In fact, you will see guilds like Knights of Glory and Beer, UND, Shadowclan Orcs and tons more familiar faces. I can't tell you how many ex-UO players are playing this game.

This is pretty much everything that UO2 was supposed to be, but without lord british and the Ultima lore.

    :)

EDIT: It even has the guild NEW.

I've tossed the salad and tossed the idea around about coming back, but there is so many different things around now that make me wonder if it would be just too annoying trying to relearn everything. There's so many things I miss about the game, well mostly miss about the players in the game. Like the way Hugi and I would massage each other's tea bags late at night while raiding spawns. *sigh* good times.

I much rather see you running with; Revvo, Arden, Gonthrax, Feyre, Prymal, Sandwich, and anyone else I missed to be honest.

The PvP would be much more enjoyable fighting that imo.

    (lurks)

I still think quite a bit of UO. Talked about it yesterday with a friend, talking about the actions you can do in game that you can't do in other games.

I have visited time to time, but Stygian Abyss isn't enough to lure me back to the game. While the UO team has put in a lot of work the past several years, I still feel they are playing it a bit safe by taking already established ideas from other MMOs into this one. They need to take what makes UO unique and make new ideas from that. I've already given my thoughts on this too many times.

I've tried every MMO there is, and I am unsatiated. Some folks mention Darkfall, but it is not the gem people cut it out to be. I can say a lot of negative things about the game, but it's best summarised by this extremely long forum thread. People are first excited by the hype, later to be dissapointed by a buggy, unpolished game that has a dwindling population.

The only one that comes "close" to the charming UO experience is Fallen Earth. It retains the same sense of community, as everyone has to survive by relying on others. It's a game where you need crafters as much as soldiers (90% of all items in game are crafted). The game is imperfect though, as it's buggy with poor network code (the game lags really bad in towns, or when surrounded by groups of people).

But I am not playing this game either (the game had a patching bug that really "struck a chord" with me).

I've tried EQ2 (PvP and Non-PvP Servers/I've seen your EQ forum posts, Spyderbite), Tabula Rasa before it died, WAR, DAOC, EVE, Guild Wars, CoH/CoV, SWG, DDO, LOTRO, Lineage 2, Aion, and every other Korean MMO you can shake a grindy stick at.

And yet, here I am, the only game I am continuously am playing is WoW (The sacrilege!). While I always rant at Blizzard about it, they have the most polished game, and (eventually) admit mistakes they make.

To get back to the original topic though, I still think about UO, and I still think about the folks here on Siege. I still hunger for a deeper game experience. There might be a day I will come back, but for now I will just reminisce about the good times, past and present.

You saying this, saddens me. Partly because it's not even true, partly because it's you saying it.

Populations doing nothing but going up. Just got the 2nd expansion (conquer the seas.)

Is DF perfect? No. Is it buggy? No. The problems with DF are that its an indy company and they don't have the team to just dump everything they want to in the game at one time.

What does one thing have to do with another? Point being, that would mean there would be more competition on the field to FIGHT. TnT vs SP! vs REV vs CRUS(What tag do you guys generally roll under?) vs EVO vs (Diablo's guild?) vs Any guild I failed to mention that PvPs or will.

It's not for everyone. I think that's what made Siege unique. Though it's current form has catered more and more to prodo (themepark) over the years rather than sandbox (it's had to-to survive.)

DF is definitely more for those of us here because of the former rather than the later. We show our support, by playing it.

This game started in a garage. It's been being developed for 9 years... How many considered it vaporware and now the devs are in offices, the games on store shelves in Greece and anyone playing this game needs to understand it's pretty much gone/going through a paid beta. Anyone see the launch? You couldn't even get a copy because the supply couldn't keep up with the demand. The expansions are currently free, the game is being constantly polished... 2 expansions in 6 months! I also think one thing a lot take for granted in UO is that UO's been here for 12 years counting. There's a depth to Ultima Online few games can even attempt to replicate.

But remember, the trammies rule the roost.

There's more carebears than scarebears as scarebears are the wolves to sheep.

This genre of gaming is looked down upon largely in the MMO industry. They don't think it's worth developing.

    Gamers like me... do.

I would suggest to anyone thinking to try out darkfall to read up on the game and familiarize yourself with it. If you get the game go through the starter quests to get familier with it then go to NEW and after 30 days to a clan. The game is set up for clans (guilds.) It's really really really tough for the solo-artist and being solo is almost for the most hardcore.

Also... no. Some of the 'cheating' done was things like radar hack (seeing enemies) and teleports. Speedhacking and this crap in general is addressed pretty swiftly with bans.

Things that are different. Macroing (some players use 3rd party apps to write scripts.) There's currently a debate going on for integrating something like it into the game (think UOA to UO.) AFK is considered illegal and if you are caught (it's a sandbox, we players police ourselves by reporting) they will warn, suspend, ban.

It is a grind. There have been exploits, but the dev team addresses them pretty quickly and then evens it out for those that didn't get to (by increasing skill gains for example.) This is actually a pretty smart way to polish a game. Character development is slow enough that they can address targeted parts of combat (as we players unlock it) to make sure PvP is fine tuned and fair all the way around. It's fast enough that we got 2 expansions in 5 months. That's an insane pace.

It's basically witnessing a game unfold.

I never got dizzy from the graffics like most do, I really hated the first person shooter style of game play. The graffics are unreal, and the demand when it opened was crazy. Took me about 3 weeks to get mine. But alas I couldn't get past the first person set up.

Thats it right there for me. No thanks.

I wish Mythic would have made DAoC 2 instead of WAR. IMO DAoC had the best PvP out there and it was not represented well in WAR. I have memories of keep takes and siege warfare that I`ll never forget. Fun times.

On a side note....if anyone likes FPS type games......give Battlefield Hero`s a try. Yes its made by EA but its GREAT. Free to play, free to DL. Me and 3 friends usually get on vent and wtfpwn them Nationals! Fun when ya can coordinate attacks. :D

And since its free, its a great go to when UO gets a lil boring.

I can help you by giving you tips on how to get your character competitive in 2 months of casual play. You really only need a certain set of skills at a decent level to be competitive. The grind can seem a bit ridiculous, but it's actually the least of any MMO I've ever played. The reason the grind seems so huge in Darkfall is because there is no skill cap in the game. You can train every skill in the game if you want to (a lot of people who are really used to the build your template with x number of points can't wrap their heads around the concept.) but you only need to train the skills that will allow you to play how you want to play (whether, PvM, PvP or crafting... and how you'd like to play each is completely up to you too.)

You can specialize (more on melee or more on magic) it all depends on what you want to do.

hope that helped... feel free contacting me should you need any more clarification.

Yep. This game is not for everyone. I can't stand the instanced, tab through targets and press 1, 2, 3 in sequence rock, paper, scissors PvP. I pvp because I want to be better at it than my opponent... I want them to know I was better than them when I beat them and not because my rock came across his paper.

This is the ultimate skill based PvP MMO to come out since UO did more than 12 years ago. Games like DAoC had decent PvP, but UO and now DF has always had the best. Skill based PvP ftw.

Drax, it seems to me that UO is like the girlfriend that dumped you and you still hide outside of her window and stalk her...

Just pull up your pants and come back to UO!

If DF is the second coming then why do you haunt these boards like a sad ghost?

I haunt these boards? I come here because I still play UO. I'm talking about DF because it's appropriate to this thread.
