So despite my father's and all my married buddies' advice I am going to be getting married next May. My responsibilities are small, Kelly, her mother and aunt have been getting things organized and booked and reserved for the last 6 months or so. All I have to do is find the DJ and plan the honeymoon. Ive already talked with a couple travel agents and did the whole orbitz, travelocity, priceline thing, but they really cant paint the whole picture. So im looking for advice from you fine folks as to some of your past experiences. Tell me your vacation stories, where you recommend, where you dont. Perhaps an off the beaten path place you and your family found years ago and love to tell friends and family about. Maybe you just have a funny story to tell about a vacation you took. Either way all suggestions are welcome and appreciated.

Location - Warm weather, white sand beach (unless someone has a good suggestion)
Budget - Lets say under $5000
    Time frame - 5-10 days

    Parent's can be such aholes.

Tijuana is not really Mexico. It is a place where US and Mexican trash blends.

No specific advice other than to make sure that what you plan is simple, and will be conducive for lovely memories for your first days of marriage. I have seen couples so stressed out and frazzled from their "honeymoon" trip because of the travel complexity or sometimes just a case of too much was packed into too short a time, that it ended up as a blur, and they were exhausted, cranky, sick, etc. afterward.

Actually all his jabs are done in jest. My parents have been married for 33 years and have been perfect role models for myself, my brother and sister on what marriage is supposed to be.

I did my Honeymoon in Alberta, Canada in the summer. A lot of hiking and beautiful scenery. I would highly recommend that.

However, since you mentioned beaches and such, I have two suggestions that I have been to.

If you want to stay in the United States, look into Hilton Head Island. It has beautiful beaches and is a nice area.

If you want Mexico, I really enjoyed Manzanillo and Ixtapa. They both have very nice beaches and they are not as touristy as the places like Cancun...

If you want Manzanillo, check out the hotel called Las Hadas. It was the white stone hotel in Bo Derek's movie 10. The hotel was wonderful when we stayed there. Very romantic.

*Oh, and congratulations. I have never regretted my marriage for a second.*

Me and Kelmo actually agree on something! Everyone I have ever talked to was very adamant about Mexico being a great choice. You can go to an awesome 4-5 star hotel/resort for 7-10 days and probably end up spending 3000$. I'm going to a 4 star hotel in the Cancun area in March for Spring Break and it only costed me about 890$ for 6 nights 7 days.

I got married about six months ago. We didnt do much of a honeymoon as we are college students and finances are tight. To be honest even if I could have afforded a $5000 honeymoon, I would have taken that 5k and invested it. I plan on using the money we saved for a "Honeymoon" after we graduate. We didn't leave the room all that much, and if I had spent 5k on my honeymoon right when we got married most of it would have been wasted since the vast majority of our time was spent in that one room. I figure we would save the money and let it earn me some interest, then take a trip when we are a little more financially stable, and when we will be doing more then spending all day indoors... that way we can really enjoy whatever exotic place we go to.

Of course Im a business major, and my wife is the most amazing woman ever to let me manage the money and not have a problem with my "frugality". But that would be my advice.

Lets just say that I'm already in that financially stable place in my life. As far what they say about it not mattering where you go but who you're with, thats all true. But Id sure like to be able to go surfing or jet ski-ing after we get done with the hipity dipity.

Ive considered lots of places and ideas already. I was kinda hoping for personal stories here as to why I should chose one over another. Maybe the staff at one particular hotel goes completely above and beyond expectations even though they are only rated a 2 star. Things I cant read about on orbitz, the human element.

My uncle went to Italy, and went to 3 or 4 different cities. If you're into art and architecture(which I am, and plan on marrying a DGL simply so I can have an excuse to drop $7,000 on this trip) then I'd suggest this. I'm also a firm believer in the idea that learning together causes growth in the relationship.

Cruises are fun, but I would not recommend them for a Honeymoon. All the food you eat on a cruise is counter-productive to the purpose of a honeymoon :blushing:

As far as personal stories, when we went to Las Hadas in Manzanillo, Mexico we had an incredible time. The staff of the hotel there goes out of their way to make you comfortable - without being intrusive. The concierge was incredible. We wanted to go off-shore fishing and he arranged all aspects of it and insured that we were with a safe group. He also found us a cab driver who not only speaks English, but was a great tour guide. The concierge was able to get the guy to spend a whole day with us just showing us the sights. We enjoyed it so much that we had the same cab driver come the next day and he took us to the nearby active volcano and out into the banana fields. We ate bananas right off the trees. We were even approached by the federales and he spoke to them for us. We even ended up taking a picture with the federales - and it didn't cost us a thing :)

The beach was unbelievable. The hotel supplies you with everything you need - towels, umbrellas, chairs, etc. The pools at the hotel were huge and you had iguanas swimming with you most of the time.

We stayed in Manzanillo about 6 days. The whole trip cost us under $3000 and the hotel is a 5 star. The area is not touristy and has a very romantic flavor. There are a lot of seafood and traditional mexican restaurants.

Overall it was a great time. However, if you are looking for more of a party town, this is not the place.

if you're interested in the best little vacation town in Mexico it is Sayulita, Nayarit.

I went there for a vacation and fell in love with it, its great deals, there is a major hotel/resort type place within 10 miles of it in case you don't want to rent one of the beach front vacation houses that white people own and rent all around sayulita.

You dont need to know any spanish, and everybody is super nice they love tourist, there is even a really upclass restraunt where if they know its your honeymoon im sure theyll make it even better.

the best part about it, its not Cabo. Its not overly tourist, its real down to earth mexican fishing town that has built up a small tourist industry. Plus you can visit Tepic which is a classic mexican town which i think everybody should visit once. Also its close to the pyramids which are about 2-3 hours drive to the south so you can do sight seeing.

I've enjoyed Hawaiian trips a few times. Although a multi-island trip is a lot of fun, it can be hectic, not to mention, quite expensive, but I highly recommend Maui for a fun and relaxing honeymoon.

Of the three times I've been, I can say that The Westin Maui Resort at Ka'anapali was the best place out of all the hotels and resorts we experienced. Its a beachfront resort and from the description of what you'd like to do, it would be perfect. Although there is plenty to do around the island, you could never leave the resort and have a blast. The Westin and local beachfront vendors offer rentals on everything from towels to surfboards to snorkeling equipment. They offer scuba lessons at one of the hotel pools, with a guided dive as well.

If you were to consider a trip like this, I would suggest adding two additional days for travel, since the flight is 5+ hours from LAX to Oahu, where you'd connect to Maui. I checked The Westin Maui website and they have some special offers available that might be worth checking out to see if you can swing it.

Wherever you end up, hope ya have a great time!

Enigma and I went to Vegas for our honeymoon. We stayed at the Belagio (sp?). Good times.

I love the Bahamas. Quick flight (well, for me being in NJ- less than 3 hours). Clean water and beaches. Lots to do- straw markets, casinos, jet skiing, para sailing, tours of the island. We stayed at Breezes. It was definitely a party place. All inclusive- including alcohol.:pint: We got to the hotel around noon, but couldn't check into our room until 3:00. They gave us a wristband and told us to enjoy ourselves. So, we pulled up stools at the bar and started drinking! :shots: There is also a Sandals resort, which might be better for honeymooners. We had friends stay there and loved it!

That's how many resorts in Mexico are. One lump sum with free bars, pool bars, and even restaurants all included, which is why I hear it's so great to go with something like that. You already know the cost and the restaurants are high class. Plus two words. Pool. Bar.

The Mayan Riveria was stunning last time I was there. My resort had choices of 4 or 5 restaurants all with different themes, pool bars, cigar bars, sports bar and night club. Every day had a different exclsuion or two that you could sign up for.

I would suggest gathering some idea's on what kind of trip she would prefer (sun and sand or more culture based) There are also some very intriguing cruise combo's out there. I almost booked a 12 day Greece/ Eygpt tour that included a four day Island cruise in the middle. Then my wife got pregnant and all Vacation plans went out the window.

Cancun is very nice. You have to be careful as to which hotel you stay at. You would want to stay at an all inclusive. If you are wanting to party on your honeymoon, Cancun is the place.

Id go for a 7 day cruise personally. I just got back from one to Cozumel, Grand Cayman, and Jamaica. Each stop was very different and on the boat all the food is paid for. You save alot of money just there. Your expenses are gonna come from onboard picture, shore excursions, alcohol, and gambling. The carnival cruise lines are the most reasonably priced and their largest boats are fairly big, the largest boats ive seen are royal carribean cruise lines and are so large alot of them have a "strip mall" right in the center and they have more to do than carnival does. Carribean cruise lines costs prolly $500 more for the booking than carnival does.
Like I said my favorite vacations are the cruises ,cause you get waited on hand and foot in there and your not stuck in one spot like you would be in a hotel room. If you go for a cruise, I advise staying away from the Virgin Island route and just be sure you end up going to Cozumel on atleast one stop. Cozumel is a place you definitely wont remember the next day.

If not, the donkey stories from Tijuana definitely sound like the place to go for a honeymoon.

Its not sandy or sunny, but Im going to Ireland for my honeymoon next march. During St Patricks day even :) We will Be in Cork for the holiday though. Should have planned on being in Dublin that day, but that's not how it worked out.
From everything that I have heard of the place, the people are the friendliest in the world and there's lots of history. I cant tell you if its true or not yet, but I expect that it will be a good time. Its costing just under $4000 for airfare and hotels for 1 week so far, so not super expensive. Could have been much cheaper, but the fiancee wanted better hotels. My Aussie coworker says that you can stay in a hostel for about 15 euros a night.
Just thought Europe might be worth mentioning. :)

i gotta agree with HaHa here cruises are awesome, and if you got $5000 to spend you will have the perfect honeymoon, plenty of time for sex, always good services, and sight seeing without any hassles some very remote locations.

Until they invent a hotel in space i think Cruises are the best

I've been on 8 cruises, 7 in the Caribbean, 1 in Mediterranean. I loved them all... But honestly, for a honeymoon, I think they are too active.

Thats why I say st thomas... there are some exclusive resorts there where money is key- and with 5k you got the key (even after subtracting airfare).

not to mention, a cruise package (boat + airfare) and tours and drinks and gambling all together shouldn't cost two people more than say... 3k... thus, it is not good enough for your lady (well... at least thats what it would be like for my gf... if i have a budget of 5k she will damn well expect the honeymoon to cost 6k...........)

Several of my friends did Disney, with no kids and had a blast!

My wife and I went to the Dominican Republic and stayed at an awesome place called Casa De Campo. If you play golf or tennis there is no better spot! They offer great all included packages. Depending on your point of departure $5k should cover the cost for a very nice stay.
