I want something interactive, but not something that is annoying and will rub against me all day like a damn cat. Considering a dog, but it's a maybe, because I want an English Bulldog and they're a bit out of my price range, so here are my current ideas:

Ferret: I know they stink, but someone give me more info on them.
Hedgehog: Anyone owned one of these? They seem great
    Chinchilla: Same as hedge hog.

Dammit! I need some real ideas. My pup died about 8 months back, Chihuahua. Good dog, had him since I was a boy and I need something to take his...err, to remind me of him!

Ferrets are smart, and very cute but they are high maintenance. The veterinary clinic where I worked in high school had one in residence, and it was part of my job to take care of him along with the kennels. They can have their musk glands removed and that helps a lot with the odor, but they can still have an odor via their normal skin secretions that may be a bit much for some people. Hedgehogs are absolutely adorable, but like skunks (also adorable) are not really domestic material - again high maintenance, and can be a lot of trouble.

As for the bulldog being out of your price range, you might be surprised at what is at the local animal shelter. Over 25% of animals that are euthanized in shelters because no one adopts them are in fact purebred animals. Many of the shelters have websites now with pictures of animals and a search by breed feature. It is worth checking it out...you might find exactly the doggy you want and not have it cost you any more than the modest adoption fee most shelters charge to cover vaccine costs.

Try doing searches on petfinder.com. The shelters and other organizations are allowed to put up photos of animals. (I had an ad for the kitten I am trying to find a home for there in the classifieds but I couldn't put a photo so it was pretty useless for me when there are hundreds of cute kitties being shown by the shelters).

fennec foxs, pygmy goats, or wallabies will all get you chicks speedy and they are easy to find on animal black markets.

    Cute puppy!

Skylarks suggestion of checking the shelters appeals to me. I wish I could have that sweet cat she has. I will instead go adopt one in it's honer. The Skylark kitty will save another cat soon.

No worries, Dan. I understand your intent. I just know that many have gotten into trouble for such. I would hate to see a friendly gesture get punished.

I've had ferrets (up to 3) and they are lots of fun.

    Pros:
    - Fearless and will take on creatures 10 times larger than them.
    - Smart but hard to train. You try to train them, they think you want to fight.
    - Funny as hell. They steal the strangest things and hoard/guard them. They are like kittens that never grow up and never cease to amuse.

    Cons:
    - High Maintenance - Once you get attached to them, you may pay big bucks to keep them healthy.
    - Biggest Con - They can't be litter trained and will **** and **** in every corner of the house you have. I tried to litter train 4 and couldn't do it. I'm very good with training animals too.

    Chinchillas - cute, and soft,

    dusty. . . .

I say go to your local animal shelter. Our local has small animals as well so you never know what you might find there.

Or check the Chinese restaurant up the road to see what they have in fresh, you may find that pure bred your looking for.

I've owned ferrets. They are great...but you do have to keep an eye on them when out of their cages. They will **** in any corner they find, and their urine is smelly as all hell. Mine loved to be bathed so that wasn't an issue, they sell special shampoo to help keep their musty oder down.

They eat cat food, so feeding them is cheap, and because of their height, they really can't get to the same high places that cats do. They love to play, but it is usually suggested to get more than one. That way they keep themselves busy and don't get bored. If you do, do this, just make sure to get them from the same litter. After I had one die, we tried to replace that one with a pup. The older male would constantly throw the baby around by the neck. We had to keep them seperated until the younger one got older. After that, they were best buddies...la

LOL...ferrets do poop anywhere. The main vet (who was also the owner) at the clinic I worked at was a real jerk. I happened to see Stinky the resident ferret drop a nice load right into his lab coat pocket one afternoon, without him noticing, while he was holding him. :D

If you are used to a dog GET A DOG or puppy. There are so many that need love and never find a home ...ie check the shelters there are often remarkable adoptables in the local humane shelters just beggin for some one to love and care for them. AND this time of year there will be tons of folks committing acts of stupid !! BUYING someone a kitten or puppy for Christmas without ever checking with the adult their neice or nephew lives with..ie the new christmas pets all end up many of them IN the pound.. in Jan. :(

When we loose a pet we always feel that loss and often the best cure for us is a newbie..one that is NOT of the same breed or even heinz57 lookalike cuz if it is too similar to the one we lost..then we *compare* and that isn't cool. Nope it should be a whole new lil entity critter just wanting someone to care for it responsibily many a puppy or dog is left behind waiting. GO ADOPT ONE of those..basically ya only have to pay for the shots and spaying or neutering the shelter provided for it while it was in their care..and some one NEEDS you to adopt him or her..so get yourself one..even some lil muttsky just so long as it is one that wags it's tail just to see you come take it home. :)

As for specialty pets if you do go that route make sure the local vets DO have services for these critters. There are some cities towns where they tend to cats dogs only no rabbits no ferrets no even guinnea pigs or the vet looks at ya and your maybe sick lil critter like doh...........not sure what to DO for it kinda look.

We have had cats dogs gerbils rabbits *rabbits dont last so long with us 3 yrs they expire* our gerbils though life span we were told was 3 yrs..they lasted 10 fricken yrs. :) They were fun though. We also had a pet dove lasted 14 yrs..but they not FURRY like cats dogs etc. She was a beauty though we loved her. Had aquariums full of fishes, had parrakeets etc. we still love dogs and cats the best.

We have 2 yappie shelties now ..got them after our beloved choc. lab died of bone cancer at the tender age of 2...doubt we can ever own a choc. lab again cuz it will always remind us........of the one pet that we had that got gyped from growing old with us like all our other pets had happen..all of em grew old died of old ages..but the one.. 27 mos. old she died of bone cancer she barely got a chance TO live yet she was abandoned like crap...we adopted her too from the...........unwanted bin of cast of pets at the pound.

We have gotten many of our pets as..........strays they reward us with years of loving US for taking them IN>>even the one that never got to live but 2 yrs gyped from living due to bone cancer..had we NOT taken her in she never would have known some one loved her at all. So we lost her but she in her fatal pain in the end dying so young knew finally in her young life of ..one abandoned orphan taken in.. she had LOVE from US !

Oh and you just may find a bulldog too in the unwanteds. They are overbred if ya watch any of the latest AKC dog shows they are up there in fav. sought afters so the breeders over breed em all and if they not up to specs many of em will dump those pups in the pound too.

That is how our youngest daughter ended up with 5 shelties and 2 border collies..overbread AKC cast offs. She got her first sheltie DUMPED into the humane society due to ...the sheltie had an overbite..GASP not show material..she adopted that one...met a guy walking HER sheltie whom rescued 2 shelties that *were not show material*..that is how they got 7 dogs when the city in Indianna told them to become an offical sheltie rescue set up.. $$$$ or they had to get RID OF 2 of their adoptees...........hense WE adopted our 2 grandsons when we lost our choc. lab........ NO CITY RULEZ were gonna snuff their lives out nnnnnnnnnnnnnnoooo we brung 2 of the yappie sheltie dogs HOME here with us..our GRANDSONS lol NEVER had that breed before but aside from them trying to HERD us and yapping at doorbells and phones ringing......WE DO LOVE EM..pure bred both of one one too SMALL for show he was dumped in the pound..and one beautifully tri colored is MASSIVE too BIG for show..30 pounds of ALPHA SHELTIE DOG still pure bred.............. both of em.

sooooooooooooo you may find your bulldog out there dumped out cuz he or she had some overbite was too small bu 2 pounds or too muscularly large for his or her breed to *SHOW* so some akc breeder dumped maybe even your bulldog not quite perfect enough for their fancy pantser selves but may be it be just PERFECT for you out there somewhere waiting for a home..for the smaller fee of Humane society adopt me please lists of ....orphans waiting for a home.

    Good luck ! :)

You could check to see if there is an English Bulldog rescue group in your area. That would likely be a more acceptable price range and you'd be helping out a homeless pet at the same time. Its worth checking into at least.

I think I will go find a mean old cat that no one wants. It would suit my nature and we could glare at each other when we enter the same room. *nods*

Get yourself a neutered male cat then bout 10 yrs old ..it will maybe last another 4 yrs or so..but they do tend to get crankier in their old age. :) Our fat boy..tom cat chased every dog we ever had down the hall ways and thru the yard cuz ...he was da man or so he felt..ornery as hell. :) We loved him. He lived to be 14 human yrs. old..........think that is 120 or something in cat yrs. FIXED males seem to last a darn long time..um cats I mean ! :)

Our eldest daughters tom cat finally passed..he hit 14 yrs human too recently. So her and her husband stumbled upon a kitten who's mom got killed and that left a barely weaned litter ..orphaned...so they just now adopted a puny baby kitten...whom does not even have its momma no more.

Pets abound out there in shelters in rescue groups, or lost on the streets homeless ..just wishing for a decent loving responsible home and human to love em and care for them. There is one to fit everyone's needs for .......a sweet or cranky pet. They just need adopting ! :)

Our two male adoptees look like these two. :)

King older tolerates Knight's alpha nature ..unless he is fed up then he nips knight in his..jewels to keep the youngster in line. :) Guess it is a male dog thing.

Shelties or shetland sheepdoggies are NOT for folks whom can not stand being herded by a dog....nor by folks whom can not stand a LOT of NOISE. They fricken BARK every time the phone or doorbell rings as if they have to sound off. They also BARK at thunder........really joyous NOISE out of em then.. during a tstorm. LOL I keep tellin em ya can not HERD thunderstorms but they do not listen !
