So here is the story: I am going to Vegas the 24th to corner my friend in a fight, so I have been watching money pretty closely. I had about 554$ in my account, spent around 350 on groceries and other things like bills etc, leaving me with about 200$, all on the dates of about 2/2/10-2/4/10. By the 5th I had 170$ left in my account, but also had gotten paid for a part time job, so I deposited a check of about 170$ in the account. I log on yesterday, and all the charges that had been applied on their respective dates(Restaurant on 2/4/10, Walmart 2/2/10 etc) had all been bumped to 2/8/10, this is after I spent about 175$ on books(Which should have brought me to about 165, but..) my 170$ check was never deposited, and I got slugged with almost 300$ in over draft fees. Can I fight this? I have the deposit slip, from the check, and I know for a fact those charges were applied on the dates I used the card, NOT on the 8th. I've heard of banks flip flopping charges before so they can purposely hit people with OD fees.

If you have had your account for a while it should not be a problem. Go into whatever branch you use and speak with the manager. If the value your business they will reverse the fees.

If they dont close your account on the spot and go to HSBC (my bank) they are great!!

Yea, i've been there. There are lots of things to consider. First, when time you made the deposit, what bank it was from, etc. Banks have lots of bs rules that could delay when the deposit is made available. If I'm tight with cash in my account I cash the check then deposit it as cash for immediate availability. Also, my bank usually processes the largest charge first on a day where many charges are going to be processed and I've gotten the short end of the stick with overdraft charges for one or two dollar purchases. Best thing to do is call their customer service number on the back of your debit card and keep your cool and give them all the facts and ask them to explain how your deposit took so long to go through and be persistent about asking them to remove the fees. Do not lose your cool on them it will not help your plight at all.

Best advice to you is throw out your checks and use a bank card i did the check thing long ago and OD charges ate me alive ...

I use a checking account and throw out the checks and just use my checking card for all my buying needs...unclear how much you have in the bank check balance before you use it problems solved...

Well, you may never see me again because if they don't return the money, I am going over the counter. I really planned to use the 8g I get in the next 2 weeks to invest with the bank, but that is out the window.

It depends on your bank's rules for funds availability. If you deposit the same day that those funds are withdrawn, then you will likely incur an overdraft.

It's definitely worth a call/visit. Usually if it's a paycheck from an institution, the funds are available within 24 hours. If it's a check drawn on that bank, then it's available immediately. Again, it depends on the institution and what their rules are.

If you go in and play dumb and put on your pretty eyes you might be able to get some of the fees reduced.

I had something similar happen when I first started with my bank. Had to learn the hard way how they ran the place. I never use checks either but in my case it was depositing the check. I thought I was in good shape, but in the end learned that deposits in check form don`t get posted to my account till the next day.

I always check my statement now daily online. I seldom write checks since they are easily forgotten about. I recently had a couple OD fee`s (first time in years) because of a few things that still took days to post. I forgot about em.

I guess its good to write everything down, but I`m just not that organized. Hope ya get it all worked out man, those OD fee`s suck ass. Good luck.

Depending on the bank, when you make a deposit, on the slip it will say balance and funds available as 2 different amounts, and your deposit is NOT part of the funds available. Depending on the source of the check, it can take days to credit your account, as sadly you discovered. However, if you contact your bank's customer service, and explain your problem politely, most likely the rep will be empowered to waive all but the first NSF fee. They really can do that. If they can't, ask (again politely) for a supervisor or manager that has that authority.

Keep your cool, and good luck!

I bank with a certain branch native to your area, and Iv had TWO crisis like this while not even in the same state as a branch since I bank with a local bank back in ohio.

Both times the people were extremly friendly and fixed the problem, including refunding about 360$ in overdraft fees.

Also, what fight and where? I live in North Vegas. Also are you still in the guard? I would think banks like to keep military business.

this has happened to me a couple of times. the best thing to do for the future is to see if you bank has any type of overdraft protection program. on my navy federal account i have a 500 line of credit that i can only access by overdrafting. that way the credit covers whatever overages, and i dont get charged the OD fee. see if that is available (saved my ass many a times).

also, those fees you currently have, i have always had alot of luck by calling the bank and schmoosing the ladies that take my call. if you are really nice and friendly and dont lose your cool, they will normally reverse the charges (note: this does not work for women lol. my wife and my buddies wife both get so pissed that we are able to do this, but they get shot down every time).

and lastly, just remember that they are out to get your cash any way you can, whenever i make a bunch of big purchases, i always give my card a little cooldown period. i know its pretty self explanatory, but soemtimes i forget and it gets me into trouble. hope your able to get it all figured out man, i know that **** sucks.

Ya. I was a bit annoyed the manager said "I guess since it was a bank error, we can over turn the OD charges this time." Well, I'd sure as hell hope so. At least I will be able to keep my accounts now, I thought I had lost about 200$ + 300+ in OD fees.

    And Cash:

It will be the TuffEnuff show, I will be cornering against Randy Couture as far as I know

Hmm I havent heard about it, I might go to the base ITT and see what tickets would cost....

You will know i'm in crowd if you hear someone yelling UO terms at the fighters, " Your redlined! Toggle confidence and run away!"

    Always worked for me.

wtf my bank will allows me to overdraft my account up to the amount of money i have deposited in 60 days. and i deposit 1700$ checks every 2 weeks, so i think i can overdraft my account anywhere from 0- 6800$ and they'll only charge me on the interest cause they know im good for the money.

You're getting ****ed by your bank.

doesn't you bank build up any TRUST in you for making regular deposits?
