Peace a must for a tamer?

    Hey All,

I have read the stickies but can't seem to find a solid answer to my inquiry so any help from the resident pros would be great.

First of all I am hoping to make some sort of Tamer Archer Char with the folloing template as far as I know:

    Taming
    Archery
    Tactics
    Vet
    Animal Lore
    Magery

Other than the above can you suggest any other skills that might be beneficial to raise? (Thinking I might need a little focus for mana regen etc)

Also is Peacemaking a must have for all tamer templates? If so I suppose I would have to drop archery and Tactics to make room for Peace and Music. As I want my tamer to be my archer char i don't really want to do this.

Any light you can shed on either subject would be much appreciated.

PS: Stat suggestions? I would assume High dex for archery and enough mana for gate casting or an occasional summon/MB

    Thanks in advance,

    Chimpanthrax.

Peacemaking is pretty 'blah' for the higher end things to hunt. You can easily get by without it.

Yeah, should do ok. But having to split your dex and int means that both your magery and archery won't be used to their fullest potential.

hide and stealth perhaps?? For additional skills?

Everybody and their dog is a stealth tamer these days....

I dunno, I'd say go with the archery/tactics. Maybe get some enhance potion jewelry and drink potions to keep your stats up? If nothing else, it's less common, and you can get rid of it afterwards if you don't think it's working out for you.

Something you could also consider would be raising Magery high enough to just cast from a gate scroll giving you more points to spread out.

I would also help to recommend skill sets for you if you would mention what you plan on doing with this character.

Mid level hunting? High end? Pvp?

Another thought is if you just like the idea of running around with a pet you could easily get by with just enough spell weaving to charm a arctic ogrelord. This would give you a lot of leeway on your template with very little difference in things you could fight.

I hope to eventually farm High End monsters with this toon if possible. I really only want to raise magery enough to make gates/cast invis/summon vortexsor elems where needed. So If I can do that from scrolls (since i am raising inscription on my crafter atm) then that would also be an option.

Really the only thing I am set on is the 360 tamer skills and Tact Archery.

Also since I wont be using magery except for the occasional above spell if it doesnt need to be 100 then so much the better.

Thanks for all the advice so far all and keep it coming :D

You could free up some points with imbued jewelry.

    Ring and bracelet, each with:
    +13 Taming
    +13 Lore
    +13 Vet
    +7 Archery

That's 92 extra skill points, if you don't mind having all your jewelry properties taken up. Should be pretty easy to find an imbuer to make those for you, they won't cost any rare ingredients. If you shave some points off Magery, you could have...

    94 Taming
    94 Vet
    94 Animal Lore

    106 Archery
    120 Tactics
    120 Anatomy

72 - 92 Magery, depending on account age.

Everything but Magery would be at 120 displayed skill, and the extra anatomy would make your archery pretty good. Of course, you could exchange 120 anatomy for any other 120 skill that you might wanna cram in there.

Or, you could drop magery completely and recall off of scrolls (have another char mark for you).

You could then lower tactics to 100, change anatomy to Discord, and add Music. Dropping Vet to 86 real (112 displayed).....

    That'd give:
    86 (112) Vet
    94 (120) Taming
    94 (120) Lore

    100 (100) Tactics
    106 (120) Archery
    120 (120) Music
    120 (120) Discord

I dunno, I've done enough math at work, just tossing it out there =]

    Lemme know what you think.

With that last one, if you're human you could use JoaT with spellweaving to cast gift of renewal on yourself, but you'd be pretty lacking in the self-heal department.

Also for discord, while it is a very powerful skill if your going to be hunting high end stuff i really don't recommend it. It is near completely useless below 120/120 skill and even at the cap you will rarely discord what you want to when you need to.

You would be able to get alot more damage from other skills for the same points.

I'd like to offer another approach to the archer/tamer template. I've had many tamers toons, including a necro/tamer, weaver/tamer, peacer/tamer, and mage/tamer, but my all-time favorite tamer template is as follows:

    120 Archery
    120 Tactics
    115 Lore
    110 Taming
    110 Vet
    80 Chiv
    60 Med

As far as tamers go, I find this template to be both the most powerful and versatile. I tend to hunt alone a lot and champ spawns are my favorite medium of entertainment. Moreover, I've always been drawn to archer characters, even in other games. This template fits my play style like glove.

Back when the shadow lord manifestations were spawning on Atlantic, I almost never failed to receive a cloak of corruption with this template. Considering that a) I'm by no means the best PvMer on Atlantic, b) that 30-50 players camped the manifestations, and c) only the top 3 (?) damagers received cloaks, I'd call that a good tract record.

There is one downside: in order to rely on chivalry for healing, you will ned 4/6 fc/fcr. This ties you to an orny, a 1/3 ring, and +1fc bows. Other than that, this template is gold.

    Definitely recommend it.

  14. Similar to Syrus's I used to have a character with:

    110 Tame
    110 Lore
    100 Vet
    120 Archery
    90 Tactics
    120 Resist
70 Chiv (only need 65 for Cleanse By Fire/Close Wounds/Remove Curse/Sacred Journey, but this gives 100% success with Divine Fury as well... and 5 points anywhere else wouldn't help)

That was for a PvP character with 4/6 casting. You could change the Resist for Bushido for Critical Hits (Lightning Strike)/Momentum Strike/Confidense, or for 100 Necro/110 Tactics for Vamp Form and more damage.

The character worked for pretty much everything including Crimson Dragons (with a Cu).

Edit: I currently run the Vamp Form/Swords version of this for my PvM Tamer.

Yeah, I've thought about lowering med a bit and switching vet for 120 bushido. Although I don't like running tamers without vet, an ABC archer/tamer would be pretty sweet. Maybe I could use for peerless encounters when other folks have their pets tanking.

  16. You could lower Vet and use Enhanced Bandages.
Chiv and Lore could also be lowered.

With 40 LMC and at least 8 MR I wouldn't think you need Med.

I could also keep bushido lower. I would have fewer critical strikes, but I could still benefit from honor/perfection.

    120 archery
    120 tactics
    110 taming
    110 lore
    90 vet
    90 bush
    75 chiv

I just may give this a try - at least on TC1. Might be pretty sweet.

Awsome seems to be a lot of templates here to work from. Thanks again all for the advice.

Just curious why in all (or the majority) of the templates there seems to be no anatomy? Isn't that a large damage hit for an archer template char?

also you seem to use chiv and bushido...since I am pretty new back to the game and the last time i played was with hally quick hits back in 99 could someone give me a quick run down of why these are needed?

I would assume chiv for self heals etc, and bushido gives you a guarenteed crit with lightning strike correct? Just curious. Also for the necro archer tamer approach wouldn't a lack of SS be a large downside?

Again Thanks for the help all and hopefully someone can shed a little more light for me.

ATM My tamer is 100 Animal Lore and 100 Anat (since I need to raise them both for stats anyways) so I am still pretty open for my template.

Also for I want as high a dex as possible for archery speed right? Does dex also effect bow/xbow dmg?

    Cheers,

    Chimpanthrax

Also I forgot to ask isn't magery a must for a tamer? Since you need to be able to gate yourself and your pet around?

I always kinda assumed this would be in my template. If that is not the case then that definatly gives me some more skill room.

  20. Anatomy is optional especially on cramped hybrid templates.

Chiv is for Enemy Of One (50 DI against the first creature type you hit after casting it), Consecrate Weapon (your weapon, even if it has split damage types, targets 100% in the lowest resist of what you're hitting for the duration of this spell), plus Cleanse By Fire (cure), Close Wounds (heal), Remove Curse (...), Dispel Evil (Dispels revnants), Sacred Journey (recalling), Noble Sacrifice (ressing).

Bushido (on an Archer) for Confidense (fast health regen), Lightning Strike (critical hits and 50 HCI), Momentum Strike (hit two things at once), Perfection (up to another 100 DI and hp/mana/stam restore when the target dies).

No. 100 Necro is JUST for Vamp Form which doesn't need SS. Vamp Form gives (roughly) 14 Stam Regen, 3 Mana Regen, Poison levels 1-4 auto cure on first damage tick (like petals), 20% real life leech per hit. Vamp Form is a huge upside on a Dexxer/Tamer as it allows you to stay with your pet Vetting more often even when you have area stuff hitting you.

If you are at the skill cap you can do your stats very easily to where you want them by locking everything. Then point Med/Focus up and use your mana for Int, point Music up and spam Last Object on an instrument for Dex, point Arms Lore up and use it repeatedly for Str. The idea is that the skills are at 0 and can't gain because everything else is locked but you still gain stats that way.

Swing speed is based on Stamina not Dex and it works in 30's (30, 60, 90, 120, 150, 180). Dex is capped at 125 base and at 150 from items/potions Stamina Increase items can go higher. Dex doesn't affect damage.

  21. No. You can use auto stable to move pets around until they bond at which point they will come with you when you recall (or Sacred Journey).

I can't thank you enough LORD_GOD for all of your help with my seemingly endless questions!!!! I definatly have a good grasp of what I can do with my tamer now and I can't wait to start training him up :)

Thanks again to you and everyone who put in their 2 cents in this thread and I will see you all in game (If you are on Pac that is :p)

    Cheers,

    Chimpanthrax,

Just curious which of the suggested templates you tried out and whether you are happy with your choice. There are a lot of interesting possibilities contributed to the thread and I plan to try out at least one of them.

    Thanks!

I'm interested in how this one turns out Syrus because it looks pretty good to me.

Also interested in a vamp tamer spec, LG - which ones have you tried?

To answer OP, no peace is not necessary.

Magery is certainly HANDY but not necessary. For a tamer you would want Gate and Invisibility. Invisibility and heals are so nice when trying to tame something nasty. Even if honored, there'll bound to be mess-ups.

You do not NEED magery for travel, nor do you need scrolls.

    1. Tame mountable pet, mount pet, and then use human JOAT to Sacred Journey or a Runebook charge to recall.

    2. Tame UN-mountable pet, recall to stable, log out, log back in to game. Pet will be with you. :)

As a newbie tamer, I'm curious about how invisibility is used when taming one of the aggressive pets. I know when you invis yourself the prospective pet stops targeting you, but when taming your char speaks, so doesn't that make you visible again? Do tamers using this tactic keep trying to invis during the entire taming process?

    Thanks!

You do become visible after you speak, but it takes a moment for the wild pet to notice you and resume its attack. So it's possible to drop a series of invis spells on yourself and avoid taking damage, even though you do get revealed when you speak. I set up macros to target myself with heal and invis spells and it makes invis taming much easier. It's really just timing :)

Thanks Wenchy. Think I'll practice the technique on tameables that don't look at me as a lunchable. :)

if you have super ninja reflexes like me, you can also pre target future pet, begin to cast invis, hit your taming macro, and begin to tame. if you receive 'you anger the animal' you've already cast invis - just target yourself.

this is with the enhanced client- i dunno bout cc

In the old client I just precast invis, drop it on myself when I get to the wild pet's feet and then start taming and invising from there. Unless it's something like a cu sidhe that won't attack me until I start to tame, in which case you can skip the first invis ;)
