Proposal in place of item conversion (see post to see what I mean by that term)

By "item conversion" I mean the long asked for proposal to let players turn a wearable item into another graphic in the same equipment slot. (Artifacts in particular.)

Robe to dress; glasses to helmet; Rune Beetle Carapace to chain tunic.

Same properties, same slot, different graphic.

A team member said this would be difficult to do.

So my alternative is: Create new artifacts that have identical properties to current items.

Put them in one or more less-used areas. Next dungeon revamp, maybe, or in non-champ areas in Ilshenar, throw onto the champ or peerless or doom gauntlet loot/pack spawn system, anything like that.

Not conversion, but an entirely new item, with a new name, with properties that exist on another item.

A helm with the stats of the Mace and Shield Glasses. A belt with the stats of the Crimson Cincture. A surcoat with the Corgul's Sash stats.

    You get the idea.

Who knows, maybe one of the names you come up with will inspire a new game-wide storyline or something. And you can add new items into the game without coming up with anything new save, maybe, a new monster to fight, a new obstacle to overcome. But the rewards would be built in.

Are you really that obsessed on how you char looks like to ask the developers to add hundreds of currently spawning artifacts with different slot graphics?

On the list of doom artifacts there are 16 of them that are not weapons. That means the devs should create artifact versions on cloth, leather, studded, bone, ringmail, chainmail, platemail.. thats more than 100 new artifacts and im only talking about the ones that come from doom. Oh and I forget the garg versions.

    Worst idea ever.

changing item graphic could be difficult, cloning the artifact for every kind of item of every slot it's insane... and also will ruin the drop chance, because the items that could have more slots will have a higher chance to drop.

The best way to do that would be allowing the player to set an item type for every paperdoll slot, and whatever you place in that slot take the image you choose and the item color (without altering the item itself) :)

for example, I set the norse helm as image for the head. If I wear the glasses or a deer mask, I always see the norse helm.

If ever we were going to try and offer more cosmetic options this would be the least painful way of going about it. To me, my character's appearance is much more important than the actual functionality of whatever I'm wearing - that's true in any game I've ever played. I'm not saying that min/maxing your gear out to be the best it can possibly be is wrong or anything, just the style of play that I like. It is my hope we can incorporate some of this into upcoming content.

Or do what I suggested last year. Make a special ring that can be purchased from an npc, you then open the ring like a backpack and it only has the space for each item slot on the paper doll, you put all your wearables in the ring and this ring combines all the properties together and apply them to the character as if you're wearing them in the normal way. Then anything such after you put on your paper doll has no effect and is purely for asthetics.

    Ring of Magical Combining

That was the idea; to offer you the least painful way to accomplish such a thing, then also to provide some kind of reward for content. Surely you've noticed that trying to find appropriate rewards is a constant struggle between creating dozens of new niche markets for niche item properties, and making something over-powering! (Note a discussion on the Warrior forum between an ex-team member and a rather prickly player.)

While personally the look of my characters isn't as important as function I would still love to be able to achieve a certain image while still maintaining the function of a suit. I really love the crafting element of this game. I think it would be nice to make use of a lot more of the clothing items. I.E. make all clothes have a resist set... I know there is the, you can wear this over armour argumant but I don't know how hard it would be to change the item types to only one per slot. In short. Nice idea, may be hard to acomplish but it may be possible to have a system where you hand over the item to an NPC and it gives you back the desired design with the item properties. I.E select item type from a ment, target the arti. and it replaces. The fact that resists are imbuable and most other properties are means this shouldn't be too hard to acomplish.
