If it really bothers you use Adblock (assuming you're using chrome or firefox which you really should be ;))

These forums are not run by EA, and neither Stratics nor TGN receive any money from them to cover any costs.

Ivory, EA does not give Stratics any money to maintain these forums. Stratics is supported by those ads, not subscriptions paid by players. If UO were to close tomorrow, Stratics could and would keep going. Stratics and EA are not the same people.

Yes, its very annoying, but without ads Stratics wouldn't be able to keep running. Personally I'm just going install an ad blocker and enjoy surfing the web without annoying ads and popups.

It is not that odd if you think about it. This is the only place developers interact with players and it is more up-to-date than the official website (about 2 years more).

You do not pay for Stratics.
Stratics is run for free. By volunteers. These people do not get paid to put information here or run these forums.
You don't like to look at the ads that keep this place running? Block them. Otherwise quit pancakes and say thank you.

this is all you need to do and if you feel the need to take a stand against stratics thats your prerogative but it works on other webs site as well you mite be inclined to to browse on . I see add-block as a need for all web surfing not because stratics is a fault for advertising (that would be kinda lame imo)

Doesn't the owner of stratics make money from the ads? There were already three on every page, how many can we fit in?

It's just one more mouse click. Since we all play an online game I don't see one more click that inconveniencing...

Now put a timer on closing ad's and we'll have an argument!

AB blocks any ads on any site unless you specify exceptions. Popups, popunders and banners ... all gone unless I say so. And it is a plugin easily obtained for FF and regularly updated.

Sad thing is, for every 100,000 people the dang in-your-way advertisments irritate the living tar out of, one person buys the product. The company makes many sales at that ratio and is happy.

The 999,999 of the rest of us just think colorful thoughts about the companies. :twak:

You know... personally, I think Firefox developers should be shot for introducing AdBlock.

Sites that people use for free, and they still ***** and moan about having to be inconvenienced by ads.

    Seriously...

I wasn't having much of a problem with the ads - until they became intrusive.

So yeah, come here much less -or- FireFox and adblocker.

This site is run for-profit by the owner, always has been.

The people who keep it up are the rubes. They keep the money flowing for nothing.

It's just another host to zero out in my hosts file.

    ...

I wasn't having much of a problem with the ads - until they became intrusive.

The problem for me is that I reached this point YEARS ago when the ads were flashing migraine inducers, or they would break the browser I was using functionally (Netscape at the time), or they would time out and not allow the rest of the page to load.

Thus Firefox + ABP (as well as several other blockers, but that has more to do with the web at large and not just Stratics).

Have you ever tried to deal with the crappy Flash ads on a slow connection or slow computer?

I doubt anybody would complain if the ads were not Flash based and were actually relevant.

As for people who work on Stratics, Stratics is hiring:

I've tried that in the past until the hosts got so big it dampened my surfing experience.
I'm now thinking Spyware Blaster (passive), make it a permissions/zone thing, plus customizable active-x filters. they say it's faster than a hosts. Free. Meanwhile, I'll just move my browser window down to cover when I'm gonna be reading awhile.

Of course, but the people that have to deal with the complaining here at user level are not being paid. Nor are any of us paying anything to use the site.
Add those two things together and you end up with people pancakes and moaning over things that no one here can do anything about.
Unless you want to start paying to use the site, just deal with the ads. There are ways to fix it so that you never even have to see them, but it has to be on the user-end.

We are getting something for free here. If it's too much to download another free program, browser or add-on in order to "turn off" something you don't want to see on a free-to-use site, then who's really to blame here?

    $358.789,90 = $358,789.90 ?

anyhow - just started getting these new intrusive ad's at the bottom of the screen and they are already on top and sides.
    very very annoying.

but i will make sure i click them enough times to make them want to add more ! muhahahahahahha

Yes... At school our network is slow due to overuse and our computers are standard fare -- unlike my screaming fast system at home with my 50 megabit connection.

Doesn't matter. If I use a site that has information I want, I don't get in the way of them trying to make money for a service they are providing to me that I pay absolutely nothing for.

You clearly haven't met 99% of the users of Stratics then.

Yes... I don't believe I've indicated that no one makes any money at Stratics. I said that I use it for free.

I mean, you know, if someone gave me a car for free and all it cost me was having their stupid advertisement on it, it'd be a benefit to me. Oh, hey... there's actually companies out there that do that.

Blocking the ads is essentially cheating the owners of the site out of revenue. That revenue goes to pay server bills, some paychecks, and so forth. You know, some of the stuff that continues to make the site available for use.

And suddenly I understand why I have so much trouble communicating effectively with the majority of the audience here.

And why every date I've ever had with a "female" Stratics user has ended up with me in the corner of a wet shower, crying, scrubbing myself with Brillo pads.

MEs do not earn revenue from Stratics forums, nor do I, nor do the forum administrators.

I'm not privy to who is earning what at the moment, but I can tell you how much I make: $0/hr.

Lastly, I can tell you that nobody gets rich running forums. For more info, see www.theadminzone.com.

If you ask me, you've got the short end of the stick if you're the Director of Content, but aren't being paid, while the portal MEs are getting paid. Just my opinion though. ;)

Just one small FYI from me.
This portal ME earns $0 but vast quantities of grief, complaint and insulting private messages. I put up with that, and the ads, because I want Stratics to continue to exist. No revenue is received from adblocked ads.

For the popup ad, if you don't want to use adblock, just click on 'close' on the ad, bottom right.
