I started a lumberjack a while back so I could cheaply supply myself with arrow shafts. After I started getting some of the higher woods I realized that I couldn't turn them into boards (to make them lighter to carry) without carpentry. So I took a break from lumberjacking to work carpentry. I have since GM'd carpentry and went back to chopping wood. Now it occurs to me that I may have GM'd carpentry unnecessarily. The main reason I gave this particular character lumberjacking is because he is also a fletcher. I wanted to be able to make bows of the new woods. Now that I've taken the long way around, here's my question:

If I had just GM lumberjacking and GM fletching, would I be able to craft bows out of the higher woods without carpentry?

Yes, you would be able to craft the bows with just Fletching, you dont need carpentry or Lumber jacking to make the bows crafted out of special woods. Its just convenient to be able to chop and make your own logs into boards, but its not necessary for Fletching skill. I would put the L J or carp on another character and train up your arms lore for your Fletcher if you dont already have it. That way you make the nicest bows possible.

  3. If you are human, then you can make boards out of regular wood and it will save you some weight when chopping. You can make stuff with logs if you have the skill without first making boards.

He's an elf, but I'm not so concerned of making boards, as I am with being able to make bows and xbows out of Oak, Ash, Blood, Frost & Heart wood. I just assumed that because I needed carpentry to 'use' these logs to 'make boards' that I also needed carpentry to use these woods to make bows. I have since stoned off carpentry and have no problems using higher woods with fletching.
