Rant: People Who Cannot Be Bothered to Speak in Complete Sentances

Communication in UO has its limits. It is challenging to have a real-time conversation via text-based interaction, especially for folks who are not adept typists. I also acknowledge the constraints of a character limit per statement. Nevertheless, for the sake of modern communication--not to mention my sanity--I must object to the overload of written "short cuts."

First of all, short cuts don't save as much time as you think they do. Sure, there are some examples of shortened words--such as "u" instead of "you." But how is "OMGLOLBBQ!" more convenient than "Hehe" or even "*laughs*". The point is, some slang is even more cumbersome than actual English phrases.

Secondly, some folks don't understand what you are saying, thereby defeating the purpose of typing the message in the first place. Presumably, when you form words and project them to other humans, you intend to communicate. If the meaning of your communication is lost on said humans, then the time that you spent typing your message was wasted. By avoiding shortcuts, communicated statements will be successfully translated by the intended recipient(s).

Third, punctuation matters. I try not to hammer this point, as English punctuation rules are generally mind-boggling. In fact, 90% of the time, I won't correct punctuation. However, there are times when the meaning of a phrase is completely altered by punctuation: e.g., "Jesus drawing is hard!" is very different than, "Jesus. Drawing is hard!"

This is one reason I like role-players. Although I have never RPd, myself, and really have no interest in doing so, I find it infinitely refreshing to be around these folks. Is it because of their broken, Shakespearean English? No! (Or, "Nay!", as the RPers might say). Rather, it is because they spell correctly? No--they don't always (nor do I)! It is because--both in character and out of character, whether spelled or misspelled--they tend to habitually speak in complete, properly-punctuated sentences.

Chances are, if I see you speaking in broken English in game, I will say nothing. The fact is, as subscription-paying adults, you are welcome to speak and play however you choose. However, I will think something--namely, "Sheesh! Can't (s)he speak in complete sentences once in a while?"

By the way, if we do interact in game, please feel invited to take as much time as you need in formulating your statements. Although I am not especially patient with shortcut-speak, I have just enough patience to wait for real, unadulterated English.

    /End jest...er, rant :mf_prop:

Back in the days of Winamp 2.9x, I remember there was a plugin that let you use the keyboard lights as like "disco lights" as a novelty feature.
On Windows 9x OSes, it could mess with the lights without actually toggling caps/num/scroll lock.
The same couldn't be said for 2K, which made it easy to (forget you had it activated and) type a few sentences (without realising).

the fragmented sentences never really bothered me that much i think there is one that is much worse its the ones that type out incredibly long run on sentences with absolutely no punctuation rambling from subject to subject through what should be multiple paragraphs that drive me nuts it just keeps going and going and going making the energizer bunny look bad there is also the grammar police that feel the need to troll every such post with snide comments I really feel for them but its really not nice instead of trolling they could just donate cash to a literacy foundation

Ack! I'm getting a headache from trying to type that way! :p

You realize that your first sentence translates, "Type in here, and see the words translate to elite," no? You used a translator. Cheater. :p

You caught me, yeah i used a translator for the first part. Anyone who actually would talk like that i think would be deemed insane. But it is still fun to throw a few pwnzors and the like in once in a while. And i'm sure some people still think 1337 is just a number in the thousands. I think game "shorthand" can be fun; my peeve tho are the people who type "one word, return" over and over again.

Aye, that is a pet peeve of my, as well.

Also, I could never have translated your 1337 speak without the aid of a translator. ;)

I was doing some character research on this for an upcoming play we're working on. One of the characters is 100% ooc and speaks like (as a friend described) "a thirteen year old texting on a cell phone".

It's hard to find the right balance. BBQ-speak is a language that is easy to pick up but very very difficult to master.

  27. *shrugs* not my fault.
I could suggest >asking a question< , on any one part/fragment; but that would put you in the querulous position of answering questions with questions.
Which in its suggestion (to ask questions) could be seen as an acceptance of a "worthy" declaration of defeat (I genuinely cannot decipher the post above. )

I have to mostly go with "wtf..." While I can comprehend each element here, I can not for the life of me understand your point. For example why is "how long" capitalized?

As for your challenge, does it have to be both? And care to explain how it is adulterated? Any one example works for me, but then I guess it depends what you base your statement on as well. Do we consider "American English" to be a Dialect of "English"? If so, I would say the "Chinese language" is far more bastardized, not sure about the adulterated part as I am unsure what you are getting on about there.

  34. Fink

My impression is the vast majority of native english speakers aren't adequately educated in its proper use. You generally don't see that in other languages.

  35. Babble

I rather think most other languages have not created such abbrevations yet.
And as english is the internet language is should be normal that the creation of such an internet language is faster.

I don't know "most other languages", but the ones I do know each have their own Internet shorthand.

Even Chinese has some text-related shorthand, which is amazing considering that they use characters.

You're absolutely wrong on the first sentence. You're completely deluded on the second.

English is the internet language? Surely you jest. Just because you only participate in English-speaking or English-focused forums doesn't make it the only thing there is. There's a whole world out there that you just don't see if you don't go looking for it.

  40. Cloak&Dagger

    Cloak&Dagger Guest

Well then, I am not sure how I missed the and/or part, but I still gave you one example. I could even say "Mexican" Despite the fact it is not considered its own language, maybe more appropriate way to say it is "Mexican Spanish". Still don't know of an example of how "American English" Is adulterated, but I know "Mexican Spanish" fits in with how changed it is compared to "real Spanish". Not even including the "slang" or possible dialect changes through out the country.
