...Something one of my friends told me that inspired this thread. And now that I have your attention.

I suggest that the Elf and Female Only Requirements on armor and clothing be permanently removed.

Why? Because virtually all items fit (with no graphical issues) on male and female paperdolls and avatars regardless of race. The requirements were only put into place to entice players into creating Elf Characters following the Mondains Legacy Expansion. Elves can wear all human items; and now Gargoyles are going to be able to convert most human items into wearables as well.

You might suggest Morph Earrings. But now that earrings carry stats (Earrings of Protection; Night Sight Earrings) and many folks aren't going to join a faction on all their characters, I think there needs to be a change.

That or make Morph Earrings something available to everyone.

As for female armor; why shouldn't I be able to wear a leather skirt or female kimono? And if you suggest that is because it is meant for females; I can wear a dress and sarong in game.

So let me wear my leather skirt.

Cross-dressing used to be an important part of UO.

On LS I was in a guild with a dude in a dress...He'd show up to RP events in a dress, and just roll with everything. It was quite amusing.

I used to wear a kilt EVERYWHERE (stupid desk job). It was one of the things that my girl was first attracted to about me (yep self indulgent smugness).

Oh yes, this is something I'd really like to see changed. Allowing the maximum amount of outfit customisation would be a great perk and might encourage folks to ease out of the Cult of the Robe (one can dream...).

Anyway, there's certainly no reason why a tailor worth her salt couldn't figure out how to do up some leaf gloves for a human customer, or adjust a skirt for a man's waistline.

Not quite what I had in mind; although one of the most creative roleplayers I know plays a cross dressing gypsy.

What I did have in mind was leather skirts and woodland belts. I am planning a character (and perhaps later a small group or guild) that descends from a tribe bearing some remote similarities to Classical Greece or Rome. (I've been watching alot of Sword and Sandal flicks of late.)

But I can't wear Leather Skirts because they are Female Only. I can't wear a Leaf Tonlet or Woodland Belt because they are Elf Only. I can't wear a Leather or Plate Kilt and Greaves because they are Gargoyle Only.

So long as my character is a Human Male I am up a creek.

So why not? I don't see any reason why my character couldn't put these items on except as an artificial rule to force me to make an Elf or Join Factions.

  8. I agree. I have always thought that games that had artificial limits like this were lame. In some games, if you are not a fighter "class" you cannot even pick up certain weapons. To me, that's just silly. Anyone, if they are strong enough, should be able to pick up any weapon...even if they would suck at using them.

Then again, I say the exact same thing about not being able to attack other players in Trammel. I am standing right next to someone, I have a sword, there is nothing between us besides open air and opportunity...yet...some unseen magic invisible force field won't even allow me to raise my hand against the other person. rolleyes: A more realistic solution would be to have the attacking player just struck dead by lightning as soon as they attacked.

But I digress...I do agree that items should not be limited to specific races or genders...especially genders. I can wear male armor, so I don't understand why a male can't wear female armor.

When Calvin (Producer for EAMythic) delivered his first major address to the community this year; he mentioned that the sheer creativity and options available to the playerbase were what made this game truly unique.

He was talking about housing. But why not character customization as well?

Yup, I would definitely like that! Too true, male characters can already wear dresses so what's the hold-up? :p :thumbup1:

This is what annoyed me about the Stygian Abyss Expansion. We've been given all these new pieces of art and armor. New weapons. New clothes. But for the vast majority of us who choose not to make ourselves a Gargoyle; we can't use of any of it. I was actually looking forward to my human using a Bloodblade or a Dread Sword.

I can understand not doing it because it would take time to make sure the art properly fit a human avatar. But now Gargoyles can convert most human items into Gargish Wearables. Elvish Items are proven to fit human avatars just fine (Morph Earrings). And female items (i.e. leather skirts) need only be dragged and dropped on your male paperdoll to see that the items fit before they drop back into your backpack.

I've always liked Ultima Online because of the lack of artificial limits (i.e. mages can wear armor; you won't believe how many D&D fanboys have a hissy fit about that). I bought Mondains Legacy and Stygian Abyss. Now let my human use the armor from it.

P.S. Start dropping the Crimson Cinture as a woodland belt again.

In the Classic client some female armour doesn't sit well on the male paperdoll. But with all the ill-fitting, poorly masked, and misaligned "proper" armour that was added over the years anyway, I don't think anyone would really care.

As for the Enhanced client they made the females all willowy and wasted, and males crouched and awkward. They are entirely different poses and not generic enough that they could swap clothes. Nothing would translate at all unless they made specific replacement pieces for those that don't already come in a male and female variant. And if they were going to begin redrawing stuff, they may as well scrap the awful paperdolls and start over with a neutral pose and proportion for both genders.

I think they said something about updating the male paperdolls at some point in the future. But then I could be remembering it wrong.

If they're already working on it; it would be five or six more art pieces to draw or implement for the male paperdoll and avatar.

This is more what I had in mind when I suggested leather skirts for men (or rather the removal of elf and female requirements for items that are already proven to fit male avatars).

As a female player I'd luv to sport spike healed thigh boots...but guessing those weren't the style in the UO time capsule.

*wonders if DO is interested in the kilt or the model sporting it (sorry DO I don't know your gender or preference) plus it appears someone is attempting to look up Brad's skirt/kilt :eyes: er just sniffin' around it*:p

Well really they could add new male skirt art to the UO CC paperdoll in like 1-2 hours work, tops.

Now that everyone has been upgraded to ML at least they should indeed remove 'elf only' tags, and I do believe most armor /weapons should be available to ALL races and genders.

PS: The half apron arties should drop as both woodland belts and half aprons, much like the aegis of grace drops in two different versions.

Still say that items should be able to be "altered" to be other items of like kind....

ie a half apron should be alterable to a woodland belt or something like that similar in use...

A dead deer hat should be able to be altered into a skull cap or whatever that has the same meddable properties....

So Plate armor could NOT be altered into a leather tunic but you could make plate armor into female plate or gargish plate .... or whatever..

And Yes it's beyond time to remove the "elf only" stuff... let anyone wear the female elven robe..... and so on and so forth.....

    Why not?

Agreed. The original Crimson Cinture was a Woodland Belt and the original Leggings of the Fey dropped as a Leaf Tonlet.

I don't know. It always seemed weird to me that my warrior has to wear an apron to compete. Conversions would definately be nice.
