This has to be the ultimate grief. Don't like someone? Toss their soul stone that you find in the trash. It could come from an IDOC or a "friend" or "co-owner's" or even a bag left hidden at an inn. THESE things should be totally exempt from being trashed!!!!

Ummmm.... the only way you are getting someone's soulstone is if they do not pay their account or they get banned. Nobody is being forced to toss them, strictly voluntary.

I believe I listed several ways someone can obtain another person's soul stones.

There are far too many of them in game, taking up space on the database, they will never be claimed so its time to bin them

Do you realize that if someone wanted to grief another by destroying a soulstone, all the person would have to do is take the soulstone to a house and let it decay? It doesn't require throwing it in the trash.

I don't understand how you can call it an ultimate grief. Why would you leave your soulstone in someone elses house to begin with? Unless you don't have your own house at all. And then, you should keep them in your bank. I can understand where that could pose a problem if you have only one account, but if you are friended at someones house then just take them out when you need them.

Let me be more specific. I don't have multiple active accounts holding houses. I commonly on shards where I am visiting park a bag with atleast one but maybe several soul stones at a time in hidden places at Luna bank upstairs. I use Circle of Transparency to do this. I don't trust other players to let me borrow a lockdown in their house to do this. Now especially after reading this I'm NOT in a trusting mood at all. I'll have to find a completely different place to hide the things. I was expressing concern about current players being griefed, not talking about ones who have stopped playing for a length of time.

Is that a reference to some kinda multiboxing to trade between two accounts on the same computer?

Its quite ok and legal to run as many accounts on one computer as you like. Its just not supported if you get problems. And its not legal to have one doing something unattended macroing

1 - IDOC: Someone either did not pay their account (and did not have the forethought to put the stones in the bank) or they got banned. - neither are smart decision

2 - Friend or Co-Owner snags them: again not a smart decision as you should not let someone else (no matter how close you are to them) have access to anything that you are not fully prepared to never see again. This holds true in rl just as it does in game.

3 - bag left hidden at the inn: :dunce: 'nuff said.

Well, all three of those things have a root cause. Stupidity imo. If you are going to not pay your account and leave your soulstones at risk, if you are going to do things to get banned for and most especially if someone is the special kind of stupid to leave something like that in a bag at an inn... then the result of them losing their soulstone is the least of their worries. In fact the person in the last scenario should worry more about taking the toaster and television into the shower with them on a recurring basis.

For those rare occasion where people are locked out due to EA's account management stuff and the house falls... those are the ones I do feel bad for, but I am willing to bet the number of soulstones which come from that scenario are miniscule when compared to the others.

If someone was going to grief someone by somehow obtaining their soulstones.....Well then the person lost them anyway. Its not like a GM would come down and return them, they would be lost to the griefer. Either way the stones are lost

I agree with this. I myself have used the "hide my bag" thing when I was too lazy to turn on my other computer or run double apps of UO. I have never had a problem with someone finding my bag though. There were a couple of scares over the years but I decided to do it that way on my own. You and I both know that there is a risk for leaving a bag on the ground... even though you think it's hidden. If you hid it.. then you KNOW it's a risk. You can't call someone out for greifing when you know what could happen.

Why would even need to leave anything of value sitting in a bag on the ground? You're at the bank, can't you just store it in there? Or is your bank completely full of more valuable items? I would never set anything of value on the ground even for an instant.

I have collected a BUNCH of soul stones from doing IDOCs. It's kind of been a collection, but lately they have been getting in the way. I was excited to see them added to the trash point turn in system.

Don't EVER EVER do this in a heavy traffic area like Luna bank. Stealth thieves know this was common practice at banks.

Do I have to tell you how a soul stone works?

Character A.) Transfers skill to a blank one. Drops in bag. And Logs out.
Character B.) Transfer skill from stone to themself. Logs out.
Character A.) Picks up used stone.

This is a simple way of doing it. UO is not LOTRO. We don't have shared storage for our characters.

There's no need to get snarky.

And like others have said, a lost soulstone is lost whether someone threw it out (Which you can already do now! Go figure!) or just picked it up and kept it.

This has to be one of the most foolhardy things anyone could do. If you need a way to pass valuable things between characters without a house get a boat!

    Get a boat.

As for soulstones on the list it's nothing unlike AoS stuff or anything else from an IDOC. If you are losing stones by transferring them from one char to another then you really need to get a boat. I used to transfer stuff ages ago ..... don't use Luna..... Only an idiot would use a bank so popular.... there are dozens of banks that never see 2 people all day long... I used to use inns in towns all over... Never Brit or Luna... that's insane.

They are fine as turn-in points if I find in an idoc I generally toss them anyways..I ask in gen chat if anyone knows "name on stone' and left to decay they go! Now I'll just get 15k points if no one claims it

This can still happen regardless if they are worth points or not. I have at many an idoc over the years and usually
It is the soul stones that are left behind. Personally, I would use a less travelled bank than Luna. And with moon gates
you can get almost anywhere. Let them remain on the list, like I said before I have some that do not have skills
or a name so yes in the trash they go.

Btw, what is Craft Coin? Just curious.

Soulstones aren't exactly hard to come by now days and most skills are fairly easy to raise. There are many places will people will hold onto soulstones in the event a returning player somehow lost their stone. But there is also a point when we must ask "will these players even return?" There are tons of soulstones in this game that will likely never be reclaimed. Some players simply quit and move on, never to return.

But no one is being forced to toss away soulstones. People who want to save them in case the owner returns can keep doing it! The only difference here are the people who choose not to save someone elses soulstone can get points for it as opposed to leaving it on the ground to decay or simply trashing it.

Whilst the original poster's methods and assumptions are... not efficient let us say, I do have to agree with the general alarm; anything which says "Those people aren't coming back" isn't something to be welcomed. Yes, practicalities and realism and so forth, but if the game had any ideas how to attract and keep newbies, I'd be more relaxed about finally giving up and saying "Go ahead and bin those skills then". Especially when there's such disregard for those who try and do the selfless thing and keep the small chance of making just one returning player very, very happy.

Instead of giving them Clean Up points... why not make Soulstones take no lock down points instead?

Because it still would take room on EA's servers. The reason for cleanup is two fold, with both EA and the garbage tosser benefiting.

    1) The problem isn't Soulstones being turned in by another play for points.. The problem is ANOTHER player has YOUR Soulstones.. It's quite obvious to everyone in this thread that NOT letting your soulstones become someone else's property is the obvious way to prevent a problem..

    2) I've got old ones from other people and I'd like the turn in points! If those people came back they could honestly buy them through the UO store if they really want.

You can trash them, but they are worthless in points...Unfortunately, since we are never going to get the promised soulstone turn in reward.

I can only justify three of my own open at once, and occasionally use my fiancee's as well.

Also as it stands any soulstone I find goes straight in the trash for zero points.

It's an indie game studio working on an MMO called "Dark Solution." We have our own forum category on Stratics. Too bad thus far I'm the only one from the team who has posted on stratics... I don't know why its called "Craft Coin." We meet over skype and are an international team of developers. I'm a writer and on the side I do PR for various studios.

You've probably seen my posts outside of the UO forum categories about "Digital Hammer" or the game they are making "Death Never Accepts." They started me out on PR and didn't want a forum category of their own. I've written bunches of background pieces for them which can be read at http://blog.deathneveraccepts.com .

I have a large Soulstone Garden on Atlantic on the front steps of Goodman's Portal house which is right next door to the main Goodman's Library near the Zento Moongate.

I will not be turning them in for points no matter how much they are worth. I really would appreciate it if they made them able to be "not for sale" items on vendors so that they could be searchable.

That would go along way to helping us find the owners. I won't be giving up on returning players no matter what the reason is for the loss of their soulstone.

All it takes is one screwup at Account Management and perhaps a missed email or someone away on over seas duty to lose a house.

I really loved the big garden on LS and was going to propose it to our EM until I found it wasn't being looked after.

Points for Lost Soul Stones is fine. An important item that should be kept in a bank box at all times ,other than when you transfer skills. If someone is going through the trouble to steal your soul stone for grief purposes , odds are you aren't getting it back anyways. Over the years some people use to pick up stones in hopes they could maybe sell them back to the owners for a few mil. Or a friend would pick it up and hold it in hopes the person returned, which can all still happen with the new system. Some people would even start soul stone grave yards on shards for people to search for their lost stones if they returned. The reality is, even if you do come back after a few months or whatever time frame and want to search for your soul stones, good luck! I've found countless soul stones belonging to unknown. Trying to find your accounts soul stone somewhere on the shard with some random person is a needle in a haystack. And even the ones with names better be found by someone who knows you otherwise its probably trashed. I mean lets face it, if the owner didn't care enough about their soul stone, why the hell would anyone finding one that doesn't know the person care to keep it for them? Moral of the story is protect your soul stones. So time to clean up the shards.

I'm in the group that says "If you are planning to close your account, put your valuables in the bank." Anyone who just splits and lets their house fall doesn't care about their stuff, so let it hit the trashbin.

I don't think full soulstones should be in the turn-in menu. We currently have an account management system which we know isn't reliable, nor is the Origin store. Customer support often takes days, even a week and longer if there is a problem with either. We also have human players who aren't always taking stones to the bank each time they use one to shift skills between their characters. If we change anything, I would have asked that we secure soulstones so they automatically go into a player's bank or backpack when their house falls. Or give them another option to recover said soulstone. If you can't always keep an account open, or re-activate it in a timely manner, I'm not sure we should be turning soulstones in at all.

I'm not going to say to players 'well, it's all your own fault if you lose soulstones,' because I know it's not always the player who is the problem. And even those of you who think you're clever enough to avoid mistakes with soulstones, trust me, you're flawed like the rest of us lol.

I would at least ensure that a) you had to own the soulstone before you could dispose of it b) that fragments could be disposed by anyone, but only if they had zero charges left and c) that stones couldn't be thrown out if there were still skill points on them. And in any case, ensure players get a message asking are you sure you want to throw out this soulstone? each time they try trashing one.

Better still, give players an in-game way to return the soulstones to their correct owners via an in game stone collection. So you could claim them back if they were linked to your account. And any players who are kind enough to turn in a stone to that system would get rewards for being honest and handing them in to said collection. Not for simply trashing someone else's skill points. I don't see any good reason to reward payers for trashing soulstones like this.

This thread is a particularly powerful illustration of why crowd sourcing information, and even trusting to human nature in general, can be a terrible idea. Honestly, the promise of a few digital points to add to the ability to grab more personal pixels has completely blinded most taking part in this thread to anything to do with the game's long term health... to the point that they won't even address that health if it means there's a chance they won't make a tiny bit of personal profit. It's truly the equivalent of someone saying "Would you like to spend a day learning how to fish for life?" and the listener saying "No! I want my fish today! Gimme todays fish!"

Honestly, how hard is it to actually stop and think, just for a few seconds, about ways that you could make room for the future too?

Here's an idea, off the top of my head. Allow the stones to be binned but, at the point that they destroyed, the game takes the owner and stored skill off the stone and moves the database details to one for a single Soulstone in New Haven instead... that returning players can click, and get their skill back from. Nowhere on the character for it to go? Then buy a new Soulstone! And leave the skill there until you do...

See? Was that so hard? Apparently so when the chance of getting 1/10th of an in game paint exists. I fail to see the point though if the game itself doesn't exist because it only ever loses, not gains people back. Shroud of the Avatar is around the corner; if one game ever was to be a UO killer, it'll be that one, because it's the true heir to the series most of us discovered UO through. We kickstarters have already been promised a unique house design there. Now I want to be able to play both; But that means giving more people a reason to come back to Ultima Online. Making sure every last trace of the homes and character they built here is destroyed, even if they chose at that time to let it be, makes it harder to see UO as a future home again. And I pity the community that can't see that.

    This thread is simples really!

Those who would like to keep the Solestones can, and those who wish to bin them for points, well they can too.

No one is saying YOU MUST BIN THE SOLESTONES

Soulstones being worth 0, 1, 15000 or 15 billion points still has no bearing on a house's decay. Notwithstanding the suggestions that the most valuable things should be kept in the bank, I've yet to hear of anyone who couldn't get an account restored within 90 days.

I like that it will take the fragments ... but you don't have to bin the full stones kiddo. That's what the others are saying. As for my collection of them.. they stay put. I will still hope for them to be adding in a rewards trade in system. "hint hint -dev"
