Revamping fishing?

    I can already see that the next publish is well anticipated, largely do to the fact of changes to the treasure map system. Well Done Dev's.

    My question is can we expect revamping fishing, since treasure hunting has been such a great hit.

    I'll start working fishing skill now :).

    While I heartly agree the fishing venue needs a bit of tweeking...
    IE: loot table for the maps.
    I find the deep sea slug we get apon getting the chest quite sufficent thank you.

    But... I could see perhaps a rotation of the type of creature it pulls up with it.

    There has been a need to revamp the loot in the chests. Its rare as hens teeth to get a good item out of one and unless your discombooberating the junk for imbuing regs its only good for the gems, gold, and the possiblility of a net, new bottle off the deep that comes with it. With the advent of new items in the t map chests I would hope soon a look into the poor fishing experence would be the next logcal step.

    Problem with Fishing is it only really requires Fishing right now. Cartography requires at least LP and Magery if not a whole list of skills. However, I also like that Fishing only requires Fishing, so I don't know.

    Not sure how you plan on getting (besides purchasing) the bottles and maps, or how you plan on using the nets with only Fishing.

    Granted it's a LOT easier to slap fishing on a median level combat character and have all you need (especially an archer), but it's a but of a misstatement to say you ONLY need fishing.

    Still, an update would be nice to see considering that the current Dev Team seems to have the concept of "revamp existing systems to make them relevant again" in mind at the moment.

    There's a lot more important issues that need "fixing" other then loot issues with boring rinse and repeat skills. Specific game mechanics and spells need tweaking still.

    Work Imbuing if you want a specific item.. since it took all the value from farming anything anymore.. besides Valorite runic hammer crafted weapons you can make almost anything you need.

    I agree there are more important issues that need fixed, But I see all the chatter in general chat how everyone can't wait until the publish to see the new changes, I have not seen that about a publish in a long time. I even went to the test shard to try it out, not very often do I go there

  12. Fishing can only obtain level 2 and 3 chests though if I remember right. Been a long time since I've done it.

    Fishing is easily fixed. Simply make the MiB chests level 1-3 chests from treasure hunting. It already takes a good while to even get a MiB and a good while to find it and fish it up. (you can't recall a boat, so you have to actually sail there manually)

    Please don't make fishing into a combat zone, its one of the only relaxing skills left in the game...I mean most people don't go fishing in real life to have a grand battle with a sea monster, they do it to relax and chill...much like in the game.

    For combat fun, we already have the fishing nets.

    Perhaps also up the fishing net rewards.

    Just keep in mind Devs, it's a Treasure chest.

    Digging up or pulling up a chest full of trash is not entertaining. If an item generated to be in a chest is not even moderately worthwhile, have the system delete it and go on to the next try. I hate having to check through 50 items when 49 or all 50 are going to be left beside the chest because their items no self respecting mongbat would even consider carrying.

    Good point. And the way T-Maps work now, you only get "the good stuff" from 2+, so I guess it would work :). Just saying Carts deserve more, IMO, because they use more skills to complete the maps, but wouldn't mind seeing some cool new stuff for fishers.

    Well... a treasure map yields a treasure chest, but a MIB yields a chest recovered from shipwreck ;P. While there wasn't much to a T-Map other than "what can I loot, and what monsters will it spawn," MIBs are quite different in that you are recovering the remains of people, and whatever they had with them on the voyage. MIBs are actually quite disturbing, if you think about it.

    I won't be the first to suggest this idea, but it would be cool if we were given an opportunity to prevent some of the MIBs from happening in full, such as perhaps defeating pirates on a ship and then freeing the captive(s) as one might an NPC noble or escort. For use of this idea, the devs could design epic boat-platform statics with no intention of the boats being usable (movable), but designed bigger to allow more movement and action on the high seas, like mini-spawns.

    The boat-platforms would be interesting. :)

    Say something like 4 x 16 tiles with two decks and rooms like crew quarters & a hold that could be looted if you won. Maybe have a couple of cannons on it that fire at you. The ship owner character dies from cannonfire, the ship sinks taking the crew with it. Ghosts appear on the nearest mainland shore, bodies are gone.

    The boat platform being moveable could be interesting though. Do a pirate attack story with a few such boat-platforms sailing up to Jhelom and shelling the city. The devs already have ruined building graphics from Magincia. Then have a hundred pirates come ashore from each ship and swarm the defenders. Give the pirates adept or master skill-levels and provide them with AI pack tactics. They should be a challenge. :)

    I've had mining on mine. I like standing back five steps when the three Ancient Wyrms and two Balrons spawn right where I would have been standing if I didn't have mining.

    What can I say, I'm chicken. :)

    Movement would definitely be cool, but would be much harder to code...I can only imagine what it would be like if you were sailing merrily on your way and suddenly without warning your boat crashed into an instant spawn and you lost whatever was in your hull. It's been a long awhile since I've lost a boat due to rough waters or anything else, but, it was never a fun experience.

    An easy fishing fix...change the pre-chest loot...It would make the old stuff more valuable and add excitement (for awhile anyway...)

    Maybe a few more high end ingredients to fish up (like pearls and scales).

    I do however think it would be kind of cool if they developed underwater caverns that once you fish on a certain point (would be like a random point on the map using RNG), your character (and party, if near/available) "falls" off the boat into the ocean and lands into the underwater cavern. Inside, you find an unlocked level 5 or 6 t-chest with low end spawn, and gold covering the ground (in small piles) like at champ spawns. Just make the RNG really low. Just use teleporters to return back to the boat, or if a water tile, nearest town/city.

    Update: or use relatively moderate - highend spawns with the same concept with mini/micro dungeon caverns or even an underwater champ o_O

    Yes, I had mining(tried it w/o at first), even w/ co-ords listed on the map, it made it Tons easier to know where to dig having mining versus not having mining. With the new changes you may be trying every tile in a 1000 tile area.
    Doing that on the water would be even More insane, I hope they leave fishing alone. I got my mining back when ore spots didn't change, I wouldn't do it today, remember, you only get mining gains from smelting, not digging

    What extra changes are they going to make, just the loot? The co-ords have already been removed off the maps.

    Umm ... no. Actually I have gm'ed mining everytime by digging. (3 or maybe 4 times, cant remeber now.) Only that you can powertrain mining by smelting ore by ore with your highest possible colour.

    OK I see I need clarify this quickly.

    Fishing:

    1.) Mib's - sos's these take time and are not the only thing you get off a sea slug. They come in the Sea Serpent, Deep Sea Serpent. The latter is more tougher and has magery so dont write it off as easy to the beginner.

    2.) Nets - Also on the Sea Serpents and Deep's. Green or colored.

    3.) T maps - lvl 1 & 2's This might be a excelent way to get new small maps for the new areas. Also onthe Sea Serpents and Deep's.

    4.) Scales, leather off the Sea Serpents and Deep's.

    5.) Fish of weight can be caught while fishing Great for that home deco and can have the anglers name on it.

    6.) Kracken - this is gotten if you toss in a green net(colored nets too but I dare say I wouldnt not toss one worth more to me for other venues).

    7.) Leviathan -White nets - The only way to get the higher teir arties, Sea horse, anchor etc..

    On the SoS's that you fish up the Level of the Chests are 1 ,2 ,3 and are very much simular to the t hunter's chests of the same lvl but do have the chance of containing a Net.

    Fighting can be done ether by warrior,mage or archer,and I have even seen dragons used to fight off the Sea Serpents, and Deep Sea Serpents, along with the occasional Water Ele.

    I could see them adding a rotation of creatures when the sos's are fished up. As it sits now when you fish up the chest your chancs of pulling up a Deep Sea Serpent is 50-50. So adding in perhaps a Squid, Whale, Octopuss, Leviathan, Kracken withthe chest might be good change and add a bit of spice. Though I wouldnt mind it being a rare change as I do love the relaxing fishing trips.

    The Loot Table on the chests is what needs revamping, dont get me wrong I adore the scrolls, gems, regs that add to my stores at home. I do imbue the junk for the ingredents but as for getting anything usefull out of the chest IE: armor or weapon?? No. Yes you can get once in a while a good LRC piece (most times it's a piece of jewelry) The higher the lvl chest the mroe that is in it and the better the chances for something worth wile.

    I have been fishing fron the time of Beta - infact its how I got hooked * into UO
    It is peacefull and restfull outside of the small fights with the Slugs and I relish it greatly.
    My mib/sos collection on Origin is a whole castle full and I still collect them when I see them sold in Luna vendors.

    Oh before I forget one point I need to clarify you can recall to your boat off the key on all shards but Siege and Mugen, there you need to have the boat next to land to board it.
    We use to be able to gate off the key too but that was eliminated by an early dev team for issues unknown to me.

    Cal_Mythic if you need help in ideas just ask the fishers of our waters. We dont require much upkeep and we greatly enjoy fishing.

    Not more fighting to fishing please, its very relaxing and easy going. Its already time consuming enough just to figure out where the chests are and get to them.

    As for loot, just make them identical to level 1-3 treasure hunting chests, perhaps with a rare chance of an arti also.

    I like the relaxing too just need the loot updated. I like the idea of a random artie in them too ... a sea horse?? anchor?? pretty plezzzzzzzzzzzze.

    The minimum requirements for fishing would be:
    - a boat
    - fishing
    - invis potions
    - a golem (or if you overkill a vollem)

    What makes the big difference to t-hunting is the time needed to actually fish up a mib/sos message. Even if you collect them before you start, it takes way longer than hunting for a t-map. And dont forget that the chest level is random. While it could be considered worthy, to sail for a lvl 3 or 4 (ancient one) chest, it isnt for a lvl 1.
    I was a bit disappointed when I started to lift my fished up t-maps. (All lvl 1's. I had a chest full and am now around 70) What I dont like, is that mibs can be gotten inside those t-maps. But they are worth doing and are an indirect bone to fishing. (Since fishing is the most reliable source for lvl 1 maps.)

    It was with the release of SA: mud puppys + red herings for new wandtrophys and a quest for a sc-fishing pole with a morph for having some additional fun.

    Fishing prechest loot is ancient. I don't think it's been changed since it was first implemented. I would love to see it swapped out entirely or at least added to. The fishing chest loot is pretty weak too. I would love to see themed chests. For example, maybe a ship carrying armor/weapons wrecked and you fish it up, there's a chance for a valuable weapon inside. Or maybe it was a pirate ship carrying a load of paintings that wrecked and you fish up a chest with a rare portrait inside. Maybe different sos types could be added that would indicate what type of chest you could get. A normal one or a new themed one. And Silverbird previously mentioned the idea of making trophies out of aquarium fish. That would be really cool. :)

    Just as an interesting note. A welltrained Blue Bettle can defeat anything normally found in the seas. (not counting Kraken or Leviathan)

    My fisher uses one to great effect and they double as luggage too, heh.

    I did. Got myself an Advanced Character token and added the 85 mining. I'm dropping it down to 81 since that's the lowest for the 3 tile radius (I like having extra magery pts instead). It was totally worth it.

    I'm not sure if this would work for everyone, but I have 66 real mining. I imbued some mining gloves to get me to 71, and then I equip Jacob's Pickaxe (+10) mining when I did up the chest. Once the chest starts coming out of the ground, I swap to swords of prosperity.

    I'd like to throw a fishing suggestion, how about being able to make fish fertilizer from big fish. Each potion (or powder) can cut a day off the growing cycle of a plant. If it's made from big fish you won't saturate the market and yet you will give fishers something new to market.

    Everyone has to figure out what works best for them. But its worth it to try to fit mining into any t-hunter template for quicker chest location. I hunt with one to four other people for any map over level 4 so I don't have to worry about being the sole fighter. I run an SDI suit with magery, eval, music and provo rounding out the other skills in my template. Mysticism would also be a good option for those with an inclination towards spells.

    As for fishing and MiBs, I'd like it if the new changes were carried over to give fishers some love. I think fishing up locked chests and needing lockpicking to open them would be a good thing. Maybe give the fishing chests different but similar items so that there's no over lap in rewards; i.e. instead of essences, have the chests include other imbuing ingredients, also maybe more gems instead of a mix of gems and regs like the tmap chests. New loot specific to fishing would be cool.

    Maybe introduce a new specialty called "Navigation" stemming from Cartography and make it similar to the new bard specialites wherein you have to do a series of quests to obtain mastery of ocean navigation, thus requiring Fishing, Carto and Lockpicking for high level ocean treasure chests. I'd race to GM Fishing for the chance at new loot.
