RoT - Power Hour/ Blackrock Gain Areas

If we were to make a push to try and get the Dev Team on board to add something to assist new players with skill gain, would you like to see something like this?

Skill points for skills less than 70 points will gain as normal shards.

Skill points for skills between 70 and 89.9 points will gain a maximum of 5.0 points per day with a minimum of 5 minutes between points gained.

Skill points for skills between 90 and 109.9 will gain at a maximum of 5.0 points per day with a minimum of 8 minutes between points gained.

Skill points for skills between 110.0 and 120.0 will gain at a maximum of 5.0 points per day with a minimum of 10 minutes between points gained.

10 minutes after your first daily log-in, old school Power Hour [uncapped, accelerated gains] is activated. Any gains during this hour does not apply to your daily RoT cap.

Players will be allowed to gain 15 stat points a day.

    Acceptable?

I'd go for that. I'd also be willing to keep ROT, but remove the daily caps.

One big question about this power hour thing is: What happens to gain rates during power hour? It used to go up (double?) during power hour.

When I was doing taming and disco on Atl, my average gain per hour was 0.1 - 0.2 if I was working hard. Power hour would not help here.

ROT seems (to me) to help a lot for such skills and crafting, but it really sucketh for melee skills.

I'm not sure what the gain rate was during power hour, but I remember making my first fencer during that time and I gained like CRAZY! IMO, that would be a huge bonus for most players. They'd get to rot more quickly and for those already in Rot, the power hour gains wouldn't apply to daily gains, so you'd still have those, which I feel, are much more acceptable with this formula.

I'm far too lazy and sleepy to do the math, so I'll let one of you do it and see how quickly someone could complete a character with this formula. Add power hour to that and new players are on the field even quicker!

If we can find an acceptable gain system, add 1000 item bank boxes or a [grandfathered] house that has to be refreshed weekly and add Siege to the list of shards, I'm pretty certain we would see a nice influx of players.

I think your best bet would be to turn on blackrock permanently since it wouldn't involve a lot of coding. Trying to get the deb's to do something that involves coding usually is a dead end.

I'm all for that! I've been saying for a long time now, that blackrock is the perfect risk vs. reward type thing for Siege. I'm just not sure how long I could hold Krystal, Elvis and some of my other more blood thirsty pker's off of that one! Of course, that would give Bruin and his possee something to do. Hmmm... That might just be a win for everybody. :gun: :stretcher: :gun:

I too am totally for return of blackrock gain areas. They were a nice way to gain which benefitted the community and were pretty resistant to macro'ing. If you went AFK in a blackrock area for more than a few seconds, you'd more-often-than-not return to a grey screen. Either Vmp or the blackrock ellies would have pounded you.

I made some nice friends at blackrock and got chased all over T2A by PKs as well. Nothing is as exciting as evading a PK, but if it happens while you are AFK, it's "oh well". This is good for community.

If we could also make blackrock gains work like SOT gains, meaning they go above-and-beyond ROT, that'd be ideal.

I guess that's also the problem with removing daily ROT caps - it just encourages macroing. Blackrock is better.

I remember some pretty funny boat battles in the Lost Lands. So many times ships they ended up as ghost ships for one side or the other. Usually the other. :)

    Good times.

Why not just 5 points per day and 5 mins between gains no matter what skill you´re at?

Cuz let´s face it. 50 gains times 10 mins is 500 mins. Almost 9 hours of play if you want max gains.

But hey, any improvements sounds good to me. Also like the blackrock idea...

Well, initially I was thinking something along those lines, but felt like we might be better off trying to come up with something the devs wouldn't laugh at! lol

But, yeah, I'm thinking blackrock might be the way to go.

Heh well, laughing devs or not. Wouldn´t it be easier for the devs to code if the timers were the same?

Cuz I guess if we, by some miracle, get the devs to change the RoT again that will most likely be our last chance of tweaking it so we might as well go for the best tweak possible.

Personally, as long as the caps are in place, I´d rather see small timers to get newcomers to stay around and not feel like it´s taking them forever to gain because they don´t have the hours to put in each day to get a fair amount of gains.

I'm for it, any positive change will probably get us a surge of people interested. Especially if we spam the bajesus out of the other forums :)

I dont really know what this blackrock thing is...but it sounds like its perfect for siege.

Ive assumed you go to where the blackrock eles spawn and you get accelerated gains??

If so that would be a great idea!

I would definatly enjoy trying to get gains AND avoid the inevitable PK. Plus you can have your anti PK's trying to protect...the gainers trying to defend themselves. Theives trying to steal everything!! Great fun!!

You got it exactly right. It was good fun. I did my music, provo, peace, disco, tinkering, tactics, fencing, etc there. Got pk'd many times, so I learned to go light - add hiding/stealth, and be ready for the inevitable swarm of pk's. I'm certain Krystal got a lot of her 10k kills there - I certainly got killed by her a few times there.

Instead of the usual 0.1 ROT gain, you'd get 0.1-0.5 in those areas - just like you do with an alacrity scroll. You'd still only get your fixed number of gains, but they'd be multiplied by that factor.

I'd love to see them back.

  17. CroakerTnT

    CroakerTnT Guest

Also, the Blackrock ellies had an area effect damage, so you'd usually have to run ( or try to sneak) into their area to get your gain, then run out. The good PK's had things mostly timed, so they'd swarm in every 15 minutes with DH and tracking running. You could try to hide outside the area and come back - which mostly worked - but also meant you were more exposed when moving in for the gain. But, there was always a bit of luck involved, 'cuz you could just as easily end up running right into the gank.

    Endless humor opportunities....

All you would have to do is log a capable pvper there. They wouldnt show up.

But i agree the blackrock would be a better idea

Hard to keep track of all the recent polls, but if we make a thread with a simple yay/nay on the blackrock idea it might give some solid input for the developers on what the shard wants to see.

Its clear that you weren't here for that particular time frame. There were entire groups of pvper's/pker's that would show up and slaughter everyone they could find. There were lone pk's, rez killings, dry looting, you name it! I'm sure a few pk's logged out in the area to check frequently for someone to kill. It never stopped me and numerous others! The skill gain AND the added danger were both big attractions. I met more new people out there than I have at any other point in nearly five years on Siege.

Its not for the fainthearted, for sure, but those types usually don't last long here anyway. The rest accept the risk for the rewards and they also learn that they need others to survive. I spent a lot of time rezzing people out there and it was a great opportunity to meet players I had yet to meet and new players alike. Now that I think about it, the people we recruited at the blackrock areas are still with TnT and are playing Siege today.

The more we discuss this, the more I am convinced blackrock is the way to go. :)

Your right i wasnt around for blackrock on siege. Im sure i would have loved it. From my time here (2ish years around the same as mook) there are 0 pks that have really impressed me. From the best i can tell Krystal preys on the weaker players.

In my opinion Uo is the same as chess. You progress as you play tougher opponents. When you lull into comfort by only wanting to beat up on weaker players you lose class.

But all in all i agree blackrock would give siege a common stomping ground for people to interact with other people and thats what makes multi player games as well as faster skill gain to progress. Less time working skills more time enjoying the game...

Any change to ROT would be benefical

A permanent blackrock location might bring in some casual players to Siege looking for some fun ( and again it would be unique verses the production shards )

I'd say implement both, gain 5.0 max with 5 mins in between as well as implement blackrock gains. Perhaps an area each facet? That way a pker would have to do a little search and destroy instead of just camping.

  27. A Rev

Keep it where it was, rather than spreading the population out you would be forcing it together.

It would mean players like me starting out and gaining would be able to meet other players new and old.

There would be little to no searching for people...people would come :)

    I would definatly enjoy it.

[Just hope no-one steals the lrc suit i use or i wont be able to gain :sad2:]

  28. CroakerTnT

    CroakerTnT Guest

You can kiss your LRC suit goodbye. Use regs, carry them in stacks of 5-10 each. Perhaps you'll be able to cast 10 spells before you get pk'd. Perhaps.

There were three blackrock locations, all in T2A. This was good because 1) Krystal had to run around and couldn't just camp there. 2) you can't gate in or out of T2A, so we had substantial risk getting in/out. 3) there was a variety of places to go, and places to hide from the pk's which gave us some spice.

I like it. Black rock was fun too but I would like to see some changes to ROT also. I am working a Fishermen for the 3rd time now and its painful. 5 minutes in between gains would do wonders for sanity sake.

I dont see any downside to having a full time Blackrock area, in fact it would do the one thing that Siege needs, shrink the shard.

The great reward of seeing .5 for your ROT gain would make the danger of pks worth it.

Who knows maybe a few blues might actually be waiting for the pks...old school!

    So lets do it...

*looks around for the black rock switch*

FYI before some corrects me with the down side, it will make Alacrity Scrolls drop in value.

Whatever solution is implemented, I wish they would just remove the time between gains period. If they want a daily cap on skill gain, fine, but it is so ridiculous playing by egg timer, and also is unfair for people who play only a short time every day.

I'm relatively new to siege, but would like to give my 2 cents

That idea sounds great, I would love to see increased gains, as I could see it very daunting for other new players, personally I wouldn't mind keeping RoT the way it is but just removing the daily caps maybe.

As for the blackrock idea, that sounds awesome! It would be a great way to even if Siege weren't to get a huge population influx, it would draw players together, and force them to play together (or against each other) which is what UO is supposed to be. I'd like to see more players, as it's a little boring playing a MMO by yourself.

While this is a valid point, I can see people logging in only to get their gains and logging. Besides, if they do put the black rock gain areas back in the time to gain it all will be reduced by half or more. Only people this wouldn't help are crafters and tamers.

  36. CroakerTnT

    CroakerTnT Guest

Blackrock worked well for crafters and tamers. Well, it worked well for arms lore and vet, but was tough for taming unless you retamed.

I gm'd tinkering out there, hiding and tinkering away with 20 ingots.

Aye I was thinking as a whole, like you said certain skills can be trained. Ones that can't are blacksmith, taming, imbuing, lumberjack(?)

  38. CroakerTnT

Ahh, that's a good point. Figured there'd be other skills besides taming, but my brain is usually jelly at 3 AM.

  39. Black magick

Although, with that said, I don't think taming and imbuing should have the benefits of the accelerated gains. As far as blacksmith goes, perhaps they could put a forge and anvil in each area?
