Do not get me wrong, Shame revamping, better loot, Arenas and overall improvements of the fighting aspects of the game are all great additions to Ultima Online.

But how about now focusing on crafters and bringing some real love also to them ?

Crafting has always been one of the pluses of this multiplayer game versus other games out there so, neglecting it does not seem to me to be good for UO.

It has been quite many years since the last major revamp of crafting in Ultima Online and perhaps it is time that this great game saw a Publish much focused on crafting rather than fighting ?

    Just a thought........

Maybe you could just be happy about all the content and adjustments without the GIMME GIMME bullcrap.

    Just a thought.........

Additions to crafting in our game are always welcome. I truly enjoyed building my imbuer up to legendary.

Your post is only a general request for something else though without any specifics. What did you have in mind to add to crafting?

Give me ??? Excuse me ??

I said to crafters which is hardly just me.........

Besides, I have always heard that crafting was one of the pluses of Ultima Online as compared to other games out there thus, bringing some love after many years to an important aspect of this game, crafting, hardly seems to me a "give me" plea but rather, something in the best interest of the game itself........

    As long as automatic program is here, crafters shouldnt get some real love;

Don't tell me that the valorite hammers and those super crazy lots of heartwood fletching tools are done manually 100% by hand.

Many years? It doesn't seem all that long ago since the 'make max' and 'mark quest item' etc were added, making crafting far less of a 'clickfest' - and of course the whole new skill of imbuing. What, specifically, do you have a problem with?

New craftables, of which a list could be found here

    http://vboards.stratics.com/uhall/2...rage-thread-devs-please-come-aid-players.html

    and here

    http://vboards.stratics.com/uhall/159334-items-need-craftable.html

Of course these are merely a few ideas, I am sure that should the Developers hint to a will to dedicate a publish to crafting more ideas for new craftables would come up from players...

But when I talk about a revamping of crafting, I am not limiting the concept to new craftables but also think about, for example, an overhaul of several crafting aspects like for example the use of runic tools which, I think, would need not to be done alone but necessarily to go along with also an overhaul of the Bulk Order system by making it sure, one way or the other, first of all, that Bulk Order Deeds can no longer be scripted.

I would also introduce changes to crafting and the overall ability of crafters to carry heavy loads for their profession. That is, the more crafting skill points a template has, the more the crafter will be capable of exceeding the current stones weight CAP and 125 item limit.

It would need to be mandatory, though, IMHO, the necessity to wear a good many crafting points before seeing a considerable increase in the carried weight and items number, in order to avoid this added ability to be used in fighting.

I am sure that several other ideas could come up to enhance and overhaul crafting in this game. The first thing is to understand whether crafting can or not possibly get much interest to become the main point of a publish focused on crafting.

Re: Shame revamp, better hunt loot etc. all is well BUT how about some LOVE for craft

Well, imbuing was definately a milestone to crafting, but there is a lot of the "older" crafting which, I think, needs to be revamped.

The market of current craftables (saved from imbuing which only affects armor/weapons) is stagnating because both a reduced number of players but also since most players have all of the craftables they need. I still remember when rune books, Bod Books, Potion Barrells etc. were first introduced into the game. They brought much life into crafting and I think we need something like those items again.

Take cooking also. With the High Seas booster we did get magic pies but is there much consumption and sale of them, really ? not to my understanding which means to me that they also need to be addressed and changed to make them more appealing to players and so increase their demand on the market.

And then, as I said, there is the Bulk Order Deeds for both tailoring and blacksmithying which really need some love. The very first thing they would need is an ingenuous reorganization of how they get obtained by players so as to make it no longer scriptable one way or the other. Then, once this ingenuous change has been achieved, make changes to both the turn ins and the rewards list.

There is several things which could be done to crafting like for example using a combination of masonry and lumberjacking and perhaps other skills to allow players to craft new tiles for customizable homes.

I mean, the possibilities might be very many depending on how much thought one puts into it.

I think we need (a new interesting pet after three years) some kind of powerful consumable - or low durability item - to keep crafting going.

And possibly not something that requires a tailor to kill 100 dreadhorn and 5000 melisande to have a chance to craft a somewhat usable thing.

And for god's sake to something for inscription: i hear people crying in chat when a super slayer book pops out "oh Lord i've got the Saint Graal! And after only 200.000 blank scrolls!"

I spend a good part of my online time crafting actually - but I don't do bods or quests to get runics.
Just the other day I chopped wood till I had a supply of bark fragments. (lumberjack)
I cooked those into wood pulp, (cook)
then I converted them into blank scrolls (inscription)
and used them to train cartography.
I fished in Gravewater Lake for Holy Mackeral, (fishing)
which I cooked into MR3 pies. (cooking)
My Treasure hunter uses them for a mana boost while clearing the initial map spawn.
She wears a suit made by my Tailor
which has been imbued by my artificer.

Perhaps we see crafting in Ultima Online in a different way.....

What you described, looks to me a crafter being used pretty much to be self sufficient which is hardly "roleplaying" crafters in a role playing game....

Personally, I would see crafting revamped so that crafting is more made a "service" to fellow players. That is, adjust crafting so that players would play crafters not just to fullfill their own needs or that of their guildmates, but as a viable profession in a multyplayer online game.......

Of course, that is only my personal view on crafting as I'd like to see it.

Those who got the bonus are fighters because the access to cheaper relics ends up for fighters to have it cheaper to make high end suits/weapons.......

not really, as a crafter i have now put together some weapons or lmc amror for people saying in chat that they are looking for an imbuer to make them something..

i usually dont since it wasnt cost effective.

i have made since shame a few dozen weapons with elemental and non max hit mana leech and hit stam leech with non max swing speed and sold them for a couple mill each..

never before has this been possible.. as the relics to make them used to cost a couple mill.

i didnt even pof them, just made a few till one was close to 125 durabilty and hit with DC to double.

I have this crazy theory that every publish cannot have boosts for every "profession" in it.

Therefore, everytime a publish is published, someone will complain "how about some love for X".

And I am not sure what teh OP is looking for here:
Some reason to Roleplay a crafter?

You can, however, it is my belief that many players already either have a crafter themselves, and thus do not need anyone else to craft for them, or they have a friend who has a crafter and can make them whatever they want/need.

Re: Shame revamp, better hunt loot etc. all is well BUT how about some LOVE for craft

I have quite radical views on crafting in online multiplayer games.......

I have always disliked crafters being used for self sufficiency. That is, players using their fighters (whether PvP or PvM...) as their main playing character and then, "on a side", using crafting characters to "aid" their main, fighting character.

One change that I would like to see is an incompatibility with crafting if at high levels, say above 80. On the same one shard, that is. This way, a player could experience high end crafting on one shard but high end fighting on another shard and this off of 1 single account.

That is, one can still have 7 characters, and one can have mixed fighters and crafters but only up to a max level of, say, 80 on the same one shard.

If one wants to exceed this level on the same one shard and, say, reach 100 or 120 in crafting skills, then the fighters could not go, say over 80.....

Bottom line is, the account can either excel on the same one shard in crafting or fighting but not on both...

This way, players would either need to have 2 accounts to have both at high levels on the same one shard or, with 1 account, have to rely on other players for needs at high levels of those skills on that given one shard.

The real problem is that most often it is not fighters who are played as mules at the service of crafting but it is the other way around, crafter characters used as mules to fully cover the needs of the main, fighting characters so that one does not need to rely on others.

The way I see crafting in an online multiplayer game, I would like to see fighters to have to depend on crafters (other players' crafters, that is), just like crafters are wanted to have to depend on fighters.

It is called CHOICE OF FIELD, IMHO.

Want to play fighters ? Go for it and have a fighters account on that one shard.

Want to play crafters ? Go for it and have a crafting account on that one shard.

Want to play both on the same one shard ? Sorry, cannot do it at least, NOT excel in both on the same one shard off of 1 account, got to choose EITHER ones.....

Of course, unless one gets a second account which would be a good thing for Ultima Online also since it would mean increased revenues.....

Why having to make CHOICES sounds such a terrible thing to do when it protects a role to play ?

This way, it would no longer be possible to play crafters as mules merely to support fighters' mains.

That would again create more interaction among players playing fighters and players playing crafters on a given shard and would help rebuild comunities and all that.

Also, it would in no way limit the players' possibility to experience different fighting and crafting roles since they could do it within certain limits and boundaries on the same one shard and definately excell in either one on different shards.

i have an idea.. why dont you write your own uo style game?
you can then build it the way you want, you can advertise it the way you want and you can play it the way you think it should be played.

some of the "fixes" you come up with would have uo shut down in a month.

    Really ?

In the beginning Ultima Online was pretty much like this.

There was a time in UO with only 5 character slots, no soulstones and players playing crafters to provide a service to others rather than to achieve self sufficiency for their fighters.... We had blacksmiths at smithy shops, tailors at the bank etc. all selling their services to other players.

Would it be so much a disaster for Ultima Online to make changes that could help go back to the game it once was ?

  20. Re: Shame revamp, better hunt loot etc. all is well BUT how about some LOVE for craft

Love... what could crafter possibly need.

    Imbueing
    Plants
    Distillary

I think they have had a lot of love... Heck, Ive been unraveling all my Shame stuff and making elemental slayers. Shame gave them love. The cost is practically nothing. Adding gold to shields... loving the 100 resists suits that I can insure and imbue.

My smith is making luck suits.

    What love is needed?

  21. Re: Shame revamp, better hunt loot etc. all is well BUT how about some LOVE for craft

ARGH, it cant go back Popps. It will never go back... Yet another disguised thread about UO YESTERDAY. What changes would that be Popps? What magical change would answer you question in this thread yet fullful all your other threads for more?

Seriously... what are you specifically asking for? Beside the magically umbrella of a change.

  22. Re: Shame revamp, better hunt loot etc. all is well BUT how about some LOVE for craft

Whaaaat? You have 7 slots to create styles. This is a terrible idea. You should go invent your own game. Do you really think this would be considered or is even worth a discussion? Argh... you've hooked me again... steps back one.

Dev time is precious in regards to working on content for us.

    Crafting atm is fine.

More dungeon revamps, loot tables, revitilizing old areas etc seems a better use of time.

Re: Shame revamp, better hunt loot etc. all is well BUT how about some LOVE for craft

popps, I'm always happy to see improvements for crafters, but I don't believe lack of attention is our problem. Crafters thrived wonderfully in the days when UO enjoyed a steady, daily influx of new players. Unfortunately, those days are gone, and most of us who have been here for a number of years have developed our own crafters and have become rather self-sufficient.

I think many of us do long for the "old days" at times, but our nostalgia -- sweet as it is -- cannot bring the "old days" back. I remind myself of that every time I wish for boosts for cooking, which is still my own quirky favorite thing in UO.

    *hugs*

What I described looks to me like my 'family' of characters working together to support each other.

Currently I'm taking a bit of a break from stocking vendors - when it gets to the stage when you feel you can't play the new content because you need to craft to stock the vendors it's time to step back a bit. But when I am stocking vendors they carry things like blank rune books, food, bone machette, bola, basic imbued lrc suits etc. Basic necessities, not uber loot and rares.

This game is now almost 15 years old. People who have been playing for years and years will have their own crafters, their own PvM characters, their own PvP characters. Consider the fact that UO doesn't cater for, or advertise for new players, the ammount of players that actually rediscover and play UO anew is practically zero...

These people don't go to forges anymore to look for a legendary smith to craft them a quick dexer suit because they lost their previous one to a PK in Shame. They craft their own supersuits, insure it and never do anything with their crafter ever again, unless they need it to repair some damage or a new "flavor of the month" skillset comes out which requires a new suit...

Let it go, the past is the past...

Re: Shame revamp, better hunt loot etc. all is well BUT how about some LOVE for craft

Personally, every one of my characters holds a crafting skill and then 'adventuring' skills. I really dont' like the concept of mule characters, but I definitely understand them.

My method makes all my characters weaker due to the 200-300 skill points going into crafting for each of them. On the flip side, I like to be able to use all my characters in PvM and they can all succeed to some degree.

Crafting has been one of the greatest joys I have found since coming back to UO. When I left in '98, GM Bowcraft meant little to nothing. There was a small damage boost and the crafters mark, but nothing else. Now, I can literally make pretty much anything in the game. My craftables are on par with many of the very high end items that are dropped from the extremely powerful MOBs and they are of real use to me and my entire group of characters. My only saddness will be from when my skills are maxed out. I may decide to delete the characters and start from scratch. The journey is fun and will continue to be so!

To the OP's point though, I can definitely understand how things seem to be at a stand still. After many years, his/her skills are maxed out and as soon as any sort of update comes along, it is ground out immediately and then it's over.... I guess there's no cure for it except to do one of two things.

    1. Start from scratch (very few people seem to like this option). Delete all of your characters; empty their bank accounts and start over. You'll have a wonderful time starting from the bottom again, I know I am!
    2. Switch servers and start over new someplace else. History and events are different from shard to shard, so things will be interesting! It's like loading the client for the first time, except that you have an intimate knowledge of how things work.

I don't know what to tell you, I guess. The devs can't update everything at once due to limited resources and crafting is already at a very high, almost pinnacle level right now. I think it might be time for YOU to take charge and figure out what will inspire you and make your crafting more fun.

I disagree totally with this, absolutely totally. I play to relax and have fun, but I don't always want to relax in the same way.
I play the character I'm in the mood for.
Sometimes I don't want to fight monsters, I'm not in the mood, so I peacefully craft.

Sometimes I don't feel I can concentrate on either working out suit requirements or vetting pets - so I do something undemanding like chopping wood or mining.

Sometimes I'm wound up and tense because someone's made me cross - I can't take it out on them, so I take my warrior out and go bash stuff.

And sometimes I'm in the mood to work in partnership with my pets. My pet hunts and I care for it, tend it and vet it. Supporting it as it fights.

You want to limit my play to one character type. NO, a thousand times, no.

Re: Shame revamp, better hunt loot etc. all is well BUT how about some LOVE for craft

Ultima Online: Age of Shadows was an expansion released February 11, 2003.

WOW This has been this way for almost 9 years now.

Crafting for 14 yrs now and they have added a ton of stuff for crafters.
Runics, ASH, BODs, Tallies, PSs (non champ), BOD rewards, Imbuing, new menus, ETC.

Almost all my gold has come from my crafters. All the PSs that my other chars ate were bought from gold made by crafting.

There may be some minor changes needed to crafting but a mojor overhaul to crafting, NO WAY.

Probably the most idiotic idea I have ever heard him come up with... (and that's saying something)

only one playstyle per shard?... no no NO

Well, I am not sure about that........

There is one thing with a "virtual world" which exists off of software coding, and that is that it can be adjusted along with the flexibility of software coding...

Short answer ? If software can allow it it can be done.......

Now the next question would be, can software make it so that on a given shard a player can either play a high end crafter or a high end fighter ?

I think it could. Therefore, at least in theory, it could be possible to bring back the "need" for crafters on any given shard since not all players enjoy playing crafters just like not all players enjoy playing fighters and not all players have more than 1 account......

Sure, there is less players now than there was years back, but that does not mean that those fewer players could still enjoy playing a crafter to offer their services to fewer fighters needing those services......

    Halcyon days? I think not
We had charlatans who offered to repair and didn't return, or told you it 'broke' when it didn't. You were never sure who you could trust with your kit to repair it - and when you did find a trustworthy smith or tailor, some moron would copy his/her name and attire to scam you. Leaving the true crafters in despair at the stain on their hard earned reputation.

I've known crafters almost in tears because someone had named them 'scammer' when it wasn't them at all, but a copy.

Popps, I'm going to bill you for the time I wasted reading 1/2 of this thread.

Where should I send the invoice?

Maybe I explained myself wrongly, but I did not mean to limit the play to one character type, period, I meant it only on the same one shard.

We do have currently limitations to only have, for example, only 1 house per account across all shards.

What I was suggesting, was a limitation that was secluded to the same shard. And not even to the point that one cannot play crafter and fighter at all on the same shard, but only a high end one.......

So, whomever had high end fighters on a given shard could still enjoy "some" crafting on that same shard, albeit only at a lower level.

Want to get into serious crafting on that same account ? Still can do it with a 120 smithy or tailor or whatever only, on a different shard where that account does not have high end fighters.

So, not only my suggestion would not limit the enjoyment of all characters types to the fullest, but it would at the same time allow players to try out different shards, even though with different types of characters (high end crafters or high end fighters) and it would bring back crafting as a service to the virtual comunity with all that means.

A single account could still enjoy crafting and fighting only, not both to the extreme on a single same shard but on different ones, definately yes.

Well yes, there were downsides to crafting but that does not mean that we should just get rid of crafting as a service to the comunity althougether just because the way it was back then was open to scams and unpleasant experiences.

The wonderfull world of coding is such that sometimes, it can address issues and fix them.

Didn't we get repair deeds perhaps because of some of the problems you remember existed back then ?

What I am trying to say, is that we should first decide whether or not we want a virtual comunity back in Ultima Online and then, go from there to figure out the most proper way to bring back that Comunity without all of the problems that existed back then.

Perhaps software coding can help us in bringing back a virtual Comunity in this game but with much less problems that there were back then, as you remembered.......

But the first step is definately to make up our mind whether or not we want a Virtual comunity back in this game or just have a bunch of players playing their solo characters be them crafters or fighters.......

Saying only that we want a virtual comunity back into UO will not get it back unless steps are taken to make it so that players need to seek for each other be them fighters or crafters.

And if all players can have both fully experienced crafters and fully experienced fighters on the same one shard I see it hard to be able to see that virtual comunity have a chance to come back.......

I have two quick points. One popps the shard you have dreamed of already exists. They call it Seige Perilous. You’re welcome to go visit there and have fun. 2 I think the bigger issue, at least on Chesy, with the fish pies is cost and availability. I would love to add them in but they aren't available at a cost I am willing to pay and often enough.

Players have always had the opportunity to have fully experienced fighters and fully experienced crafters on the same shard.

The 1st character i created in UO was a fighter
My 2nd character slot I created a miner blacksmith.

If Popp's suggestion on limiting character types per account/per shard were to go through - this would go against the basic "sandbox" of historical UO. In addition, I would want reimbursement for the 60 to 120 soulstones on various shards plus the power-scrolls used on each of the 7 characters on each of those shards - plus the time training all of those skills.

To put it bluntly... this idea is crazy... totally insane.

I'm going to have to side with Petra on that one, popps. I have one account now, and I enjoy playing on only one shard, so what you propose would be far too limiting for my happiness in UO. :)

And you ALL forgot to note the the various elementals now drop colored ore. How much more crafter friendly can you get?

I've been having a blast even though I think the bottom level is a smidgen insane on the respawn timer. I can barely loot before it all respawns on me.

Popps, this game has been around for a long time for one of a number of reasons. The big one being that this is a "sanbox" game. If they were to make it the way you seem to be asking it would destroy the sanbox gameplay, the very reason this game is still around today. If you can't enjoy this game for what it is then you need to move one. Of course I should point out that not even WoW has this horrid idea you're proposing.

Our apartments in Vegas had a really nice pool. Shaped like an O and you could swim around in circles. There was rocks and trees in the middle and on the outside of the O. One time somebody decided to take a dump on one of the rocks. There was a human poop just laying there, baking in the sun and smelling like a rest stop bathroom. We had to limit our swimming to a C shape to avoid swimming by the poop rock and getting a nose full of human feces.

The moral of the story is; Stratics is a beautiful circular pool, and popps' posts are the poop rock.

The irony in my post is that I took a huge wall of text to relay a very simple point, in true popps style. You're welcome, forum readers.
